Ecstasy In The Classroom: Trance, Self, And The Academic Profession In Medieval Paris, Ayelet Even-Ezra Dec 2018

Ecstasy In The Classroom: Trance, Self, And The Academic Profession In Medieval Paris, Ayelet Even-Ezra

Religion

Can ecstatic experiences be studied with the academic instruments of rational investigation? What kinds of religious illumination are experienced by academically minded people? And what is the specific nature of the knowledge of God that university theologians of the Middle Ages enjoyed compared with other modes of knowing God, such as rapture, prophecy, the beatific vision, or simple faith? Ecstasy in the Classroom explores the interface between academic theology and ecstatic experience in the first half of the thirteenth century, formative years in the history of the University of Paris, medieval Europe’s “fountain of knowledge.” It considers little-known texts by …

Improving The State Selectivity Of Field Ionization With Quantum Control, Vincent C. Gregoric, Jason Bennett, Bianca R. Gualtieri, Ankitha Kannad, Zhimin Cheryl Liu, Zoe A. Rowley, Thomas J. Carroll, Michael W. Noel Dec 2018

Improving The State Selectivity Of Field Ionization With Quantum Control, Vincent C. Gregoric, Jason Bennett, Bianca R. Gualtieri, Ankitha Kannad, Zhimin Cheryl Liu, Zoe A. Rowley, Thomas J. Carroll, Michael W. Noel

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

The electron signals from the field ionization of two closely spaced Rydberg states of rubidium-85 are separated using quantum control. In selective field ionization, the state distribution of a collection of Rydberg atoms is measured by ionizing the atoms with a ramped electric field. Generally, atoms in higher energy states ionize at lower fields, so ionized electrons which are detected earlier in time can be correlated with higher energy Rydberg states. However, the resolution of this technique is limited by the Stark effect. As the electric field is increased, the electron encounters numerous avoided Stark level crossings which split the …

Rigid, Joshua Salisbury

Tutor's Column

As tutors, we are asked to do the same task on a daily basis. Because of this monotony, we can fall into a rigid routine that may have us saying and doing the same things. This article examines the leading causes of these rigid sessions and some helpful solutions. More precisely, it focuses on the critical aspects of conversation and how this simple idea can promote better tutoring sessions. A basic outline of a productive conversation is provided as a reference.

Synergistic Performance Of Lithium Difluoro(Oxalato)Borate And Fluoroethylene Carbonate In Carbonate Electrolytes For Lithium Metal Anodes, Zachary L. Brown, Brett L. Lucht Dec 2018

Synergistic Performance Of Lithium Difluoro(Oxalato)Borate And Fluoroethylene Carbonate In Carbonate Electrolytes For Lithium Metal Anodes, Zachary L. Brown, Brett L. Lucht

Chemistry Faculty Publications

There is significant interest in the development of rechargeable high-energy density batteries which utilize lithium metal anodes. Recently, fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) and lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) have been reported to significantly improve the electrochemical performance of lithium metal anodes. This investigation focuses on exploring the synergy between LiDFOB and FEC in carbonate electrolytes for lithium metal anodes. In ethylene carbonate (EC) electrolytes, LiDFOB is optimal when used in high salt concentrations, such as 1.0 M, to improve the electrochemistry of the lithium metal anode in Cu||LiFePO4 cells. However, in FEC electrolytes, LiDFOB is optimal when used in lower concentrations, such …

Assessment Of The Effects Of Climate Change On Evapotranspiration With An Improved Elasticity Method In A Nonhumid Area, Lei Tian, Jiming Jin, Pute Wu, Guo-Yue Niu Dec 2018

Assessment Of The Effects Of Climate Change On Evapotranspiration With An Improved Elasticity Method In A Nonhumid Area, Lei Tian, Jiming Jin, Pute Wu, Guo-Yue Niu

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Climatic elasticity is a crucial metric to assess the hydrological influence of climate change. Based on the Budyko equation, this study performed an analytical derivation of the climatic elasticity of evapotranspiration (ET). With this derived elasticity, it is possible to quantitatively separate the impacts of precipitation, air temperature, net radiation, relative humidity, and wind speed on ET in a watershed. This method was applied in the Wuding River Watershed (WRW), located in the center of the Yellow River Watershed of China. The estimated rate of change in ET caused by climatic variables is −10.69 mm/decade, which is close to the …

High School Elvish, Taylor Mcdougal

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

In high school I spoke elvish with my friends but that’s all. I was a normal kid!

Me: How did you learn Elvish

I didn’t know the language I just had some of my friends liked to write notes in it and give them to me. I had to look up the words on the internet to read them! [threw hands in the air and laughed]. The boys in choir would write in elvish on the board too.

Population Genomic Analysis Of North American Eastern Wolves (Canic Lycaon) Support Their Conservation Priority Status, Elizabeth Heppenheimer, Ryan Harrigan, Linda Rutledge, Klaus-Peter Koepfli, Alexandra L. Decandia, Kristin Brzeski, Et. Al. Dec 2018

Population Genomic Analysis Of North American Eastern Wolves (Canic Lycaon) Support Their Conservation Priority Status, Elizabeth Heppenheimer, Ryan Harrigan, Linda Rutledge, Klaus-Peter Koepfli, Alexandra L. Decandia, Kristin Brzeski, Et. Al.

College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science Publications

The threatened eastern wolf is found predominantly in protected areas of central Ontario and has an evolutionary history obscured by interbreeding with coyotes and gray wolves, which challenges its conservation status and subsequent management. Here, we used a population genomics approach to uncover spatial patterns of variation in 281 canids in central Ontario and the Great Lakes region. This represents the first genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) dataset with substantial sample sizes of representative populations. Although they comprise their own genetic cluster, we found evidence of eastern wolf dispersal outside of the boundaries of protected areas, in that the frequency …

How Soil Salinity Affects The Stomatal Conductance Of Baccharis Salicifolia (Mulefat/Seepwillow), Andrew Kim, Caroline Wilkerson, Mahala Bayless, Peter Du Dec 2018

How Soil Salinity Affects The Stomatal Conductance Of Baccharis Salicifolia (Mulefat/Seepwillow), Andrew Kim, Caroline Wilkerson, Mahala Bayless, Peter Du

Featured Research

This is a poster presentation demonstrating the project our group has been working on. We hypothesize that the stomatal conductance of mulefat will decrease as soil salinity increases in both pre-rain and post-rain conditions because the plant tries to absorb salt water. However, the salt water cannot pass through plant tissue and draws water out of the plant. Since plant requires water for photosynthesis, water being drawn out means less water is available for the plant to do photosynthesis. We have tested our hypothesis by collecting soil samples in Legacy park, and recorded stomatal conductance by using a leaf porometer

A Comparison Of Different Methods Of Dehydration On Baccharis Salicifolia, Michael Nicholas, Sinjun Hong Dec 2018

A Comparison Of Different Methods Of Dehydration On Baccharis Salicifolia, Michael Nicholas, Sinjun Hong

Featured Research

Baccharis salicifolia is a native riparian plant living in many places near to the Santa Monica Mountains. One of these locations is Legacy park, which has had many events effect it that has led to some very unfortunate changes. The park’s soil was tested earlier this year by a group of undergraduate students lead by Dr. Stephen Davis and was found to have a very high salinity level. The plants in the park appeared to be struggling to survive and had signs of dehydration and wilting. This led to us questioning the types of dehydration of the plants. Areas of …

A Comparison Of Photosynthetic Rate, Stomatal Conductance, And

A Comparison Of Photosynthetic Rate, Stomatal Conductance, And
Electron Transport Rate Between Malosma Laurina And Encelia Californica, Yujin Choi, Isabella Armstrong, Catherina Haas, Micah Kim

Featured Research

In the Santa Monica Mountains, there are two main vegetation types: chaparral, which makes up __% of plants in these mountains, and coastal sagebrush, which makes up __%. Despite California’s acute environmental stress, both of these plants manage to survive, and even thrive in some cases. We were interested in seeing if in spite of these vast anatomical and physiological differences, these plants were able to survive at similar health rates, measured in photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and electron transport rate (ETR). We have decided to choose 2 plants from 2 different leaf types of different vegetation types: Malosma laurina …

A Common Soldier: William H. P. Ivey, Isaac J. Shoop Dec 2018

A Common Soldier: William H. P. Ivey, Isaac J. Shoop

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

When I set out to pick a soldier for my first Killed at Gettysburg project, I did not know what I would find. I chose to research a Confederate soldier named William H. P. Ivey simply because he was born and raised on a farm, like me. As I did my research, I realized that Ivey’s life tells us a lot about the motivations and thoughts of a common southern soldier in the Civil War. Like most Confederate infantrymen, Ivey’s family was of the lower class and they were not slaveholders. Ivey, along with his brother Hinton, enlisted in the …

"The Milo Man", Susan Swan Dec 2018

"The Milo Man", Susan Swan

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

The “Milo Man” incident took place many years before I was lived in Australia and was told this story. It describes a companionship of elders (young men around age 20). These two elders were great friends and every night the first elder would make a couple mugs of milo for the two of them before bed. They would drink it and talk about their day before heading to sleep. As time went on, the second elder started noticing that each morning he would wake up super sore for some reason. He wrote it off as a bad mattress and went …

Christmas Eve Tradition, Alana Miller

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

Actually Christmas Eve, we have the full tradition of, um, so we read, we get pajamas that night and we all change into our pajamas and we get ready for bed. And then we read “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” And I am always the voice of um, ah Cindy Lou Who. I have been since I was a little girl. And every single time now Brittney (her sister) or someone, another person of my family will tell me, it’s like, “You are a little old for this aren’t you Annika.” Um Brittney usually tries to make gestures like the …
