Christmas Eve Gifts, Madeline Thomas
Christmas Eve Gifts, Madeline Thomas
USU Student Folklore Fieldwork
Then we will open our presents to each other, like the siblings all draw names, and then we open our presents between the siblings, and then we open a gift my grandma gets, which is always pajamas, surprise! [Sarcastically] It's like, it stopped being new. And when she doesn’t give us pajamas, she gives us those like fleece blanket things, that she and my grandpa have tied, throughout the year, which sounds awful, they have like 20 grandkids, can you imagine doing that many blankets? It’d be terrible! But umm, she gives them to us but every year my dog …
Christmas Eve Candles, Madeline Thomas
Christmas Eve Candles, Madeline Thomas
USU Student Folklore Fieldwork
Another Swedish thing that we do is, we have, it's kind of like a menorah, but it only has four candles, and there’s one for each Sunday leading up to Christmas, but then on Christmas Eve you light them all [pause] again so you have all four lit. And then we always have-I don’t know why, you know, we’re all adults now, but we still sorta have this fight over who gets to blow out the candle, luckily there’s four children in my family and four candles so it always works out, it’s perfect.
Christmas Eve Chowder And Julmust, Madeline Thomas
Christmas Eve Chowder And Julmust, Madeline Thomas
USU Student Folklore Fieldwork
On Christmas Eve, every year, my family, we have like a very specific ritual, we do the same things every year, so we always start by having dinner and we always have clam chowder, which is disgusting, but my mom likes it, so we still have it, then we have this thing called Julmust, which is like a Swedish version of of like, root beer, but they only drink it at Christmas and it's called Julmust because Jul means Christmas, so like we drink Julmust and have clam chowder, both disgusting things, [pause, laughter] I don’t know why we still …

Stay Sexy And Don't Go On A Blind Date In Tabiona, Susan Swan
USU Student Folklore Fieldwork
The date started ok, we met up with the guys and I met my blind date for the first time. I wasn’t that impressed. He was a scrawny little dude and was way more interested in hanging with his buddy than going on a date with me. So they had apparently decided to take us fishing… it’s a backwoods area there haha so that’s pretty much all they did for fun. Well I don’t know about you, but it isn’t necessarily my idea of fun. The guy dating my cousin [I honestly don’t remember either of their names] had a …

Ghost Encounter, Lindsey Pike, Stan Kouris
USU Student Folklore Fieldwork
My other friend, she, her house is like, “haunted” and so like later she got the whole dedicated thing, but one story, I was over there helping her babysit and I was like in, sixth grade, and so her house, like the living and kitchen are connected so there is not like a wall in between, and everyone was asleep, like her parents were gone and everything, and we were facing the tv, and all of a sudden we heard this HUGE craaaash in the kitchen, and we were like what the heck, and so we go back there, and …
Lone Peak Drill Initiation, Stan Kouris
Lone Peak Drill Initiation, Stan Kouris
USU Student Folklore Fieldwork
Okay, when I was a freshman in highschool, I, auditioned for the drill team, and I made it, and each year, like we did like a team retreat, and that year we went up to Bear Lake to our coach’s cabin, and, I think it was like the first night we were there, like all the returners and like the captains were like oh we have to do this initiation thing. And, um, so all of like the new people that made the team had to like sit upstairs, and they would call us downstairs like one by one, and …

High Expectations And Teacher Implicit Biases In A Culture Of Care, Jacqueline K. Haynes
High Expectations And Teacher Implicit Biases In A Culture Of Care, Jacqueline K. Haynes
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This graduate project was part of a group project completed by five school and district administrators in Hillsborough County, Florida. The project began because of our passion for teachers who are able to establish a culture of care in their classrooms that support students academically but transform their learning through experiences that enable them to be more highly engaged and productive students, regardless of ethnicity, socioeconomic status, perceived academic abilities, and backgrounds.
My project component looked at research on teacher expectations and their effects on student success. Why does the color of a child's skin tone trigger lower expectations by …
“They’Re Bringing Crime:” White Fear And Closing Borders, Hanna Rosenheimer
“They’Re Bringing Crime:” White Fear And Closing Borders, Hanna Rosenheimer
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Leading up to the 2016 election, popular rhetoric surrounding immigrants to the United States took a marked turn. This change can be partially explained using Piotr Cap’s proximization theory, a threat-based discursive model that relies on locating threatening events in proximity to the audience in order to justify preventative or protective measures. Quantitative public opinion data from the Chapman University Survey of American Fears suggests that a disbelief in immigrants’ ability to assimilate is strongly correlated with a fear of immigrants committing crimes. White Americans who hold these beliefs typically tend to favor or strongly favor preemptive punitive action against …

Consortium Benefits: Using Tv To Increase Library Consumption, Alicea Peyton
Consortium Benefits: Using Tv To Increase Library Consumption, Alicea Peyton
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This experiment was performed to determine if factors exist between increasing the consumption of independent libraries through the use of television; and the consideration of cutting related advertisement expense through the cost-sharing benefit of consortium membership. This paper examines a historical report provided by the American Library Association (1949) on the use of television by public libraries. In conjunction, two other research studies are examined on the subject of 1) consortium membership and benefits, and 2) whether the use of advertisement on cable television has a direct impact in increasing library consumption.
Using Deep Learning To Forecast Spatiotemporal Crime Patterns, Shuzhan Fan
Using Deep Learning To Forecast Spatiotemporal Crime Patterns, Shuzhan Fan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The distributional patterns of crime occurrences are closely related to their spatial, temporal, and environmental contexts. It has been a hot topic for researchers and crime analysts to discover such complex relationships in order to forecast crime, both spatially and temporally. Many factors play a role in the occurrences of crimes. Conventional crime forecasting research has primarily relied on historical crime records and socioeconomic data, while ignoring the rich social media and other environmental context data. The large volume of data requires a more appropriate forecasting framework with the ability to take in massive multimodal data and possibly achieve better …
Discovery From Failure: Understanding Developing Countries' Battles With Poverty And Culturally Appropriate Answers To Them, Daniel Tennant
Discovery From Failure: Understanding Developing Countries' Battles With Poverty And Culturally Appropriate Answers To Them, Daniel Tennant
Honors Theses
This paper is an examination of a failed research attempt, followed by examination of successful research literature on the subject of the informal economy and poverty. The research is centered on peripheral regions of the world, namely in Sub-Saharan countries such as Senegal. The informal economy continues to grow without thorough understanding or measurement of it creating greater problems in the future. The examination highlights the need for culturally appropriate questions, methodologies, and answers to issues of poverty in developing countries. Western World bias needs to be considered when creating and executing research in developing countries if the results are …

Psychophysiology In Relation To Music And Behavior, Chloe Heintz
Psychophysiology In Relation To Music And Behavior, Chloe Heintz
Honors Theses
This thesis was based off of my experience as a research assistant in a study conducted by principle investigator Edward Roth and student investigator Alycia Sterenberg entitled “The determinants of affect, emotional arousal, and autobiographical memories on music-evoked nostalgia.” Roth and Sterenberg investigated the relationship between nostalgic music, autobiographical memories, and the physiological response of electrodermal activity (EDA). This was done by recruiting 30 college students between the ages of 18-28 to listen to music based off of five songs they listed as being nostalgic to them. They would then rate how familiar, nostalgic, and enjoyable each song was, in …

Sexual Harassment Of Biology And Biomedical Sciences Undergraduates: A Study On The Effects Of Larry Nassar And William Strampel, Kathleen Ryan
Honors Theses
Sexual harassment amongst undergraduate women of science is a prominent issue, gaining much media attention. The goal of this study is to determine if, and how, major sexual harassment cases impact women pursuing science-related careers, and what the sexual harassment climate is like for these individuals. The study will examine prevalence of harassment, common types of sexual misconduct, perpetrators, and severity through an anonymous survey. Additionally, this study will look into the effects of the Nassar and Strampel cases regarding desire to report harassment, and students’ fear of experiencing harassment in their future educations and careers. It is hypothesized that …
The Use Of Neurologic Music Therapy And Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation As Treatment For Parkinson’S Disease, Shaima Shebrain
The Use Of Neurologic Music Therapy And Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation As Treatment For Parkinson’S Disease, Shaima Shebrain
Honors Theses
Parkinson’s Disease (PD), a progressive, neurodegenerative disease, is common in people who are 50 years of age or older. It is characterized by the loss of function of the substantia nigra in producing dopamine, a neurotransmitter that allows for smooth and coordinated movement. Due to the lack of dopamine, an individual with PD experiences involuntary and stiff movements such as tremors, rigidity, bradykinesia, postural instability, and abnormal gait patterns along with other motor symptoms. Over the years, the motor symptoms that are associated with PD progressively worsen; thus, limiting the individual’s independency and ability to perform daily tasks. Those with …

Nostalgia And Music-Evoked Autobiographical Memories: Salience And Content In Musicians Vs. Non-Musicians, Taylorlyn Mehnert
Honors Theses
This paper examines a subsection of data from a larger study conducted by Alycia Sterenberg titled, “The determinants of affect, emotional arousal, and autobiographical memories on music-evoked nostalgia”. The question being examined was: when examining musicians and non-musicians, what difference is there in the intensity of nostalgic memories between the two groups; what elements of a memory are either group more likely to be nostalgic about when listening to music they have labeled as nostalgic for themselves? The data was acquired from questionnaires participants filled out after listening to music generated to be similar to that which they had labeled …

The Anchor, Volume 132.12: December 5, 2018, Hope College
The Anchor: 2018
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Variation Of Protein Molecular Weight Distribution Parameters And Their Correlations With Gluten And Mixing Characteristics For Winter Waxy Wheat, Jae‐Bom Ohm, Linda Dykes, Robert A. Graybosch
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Background and objectives: Little data have been reported on protein molecular weight distribution (MWD) for waxy (amylose‐free) wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) despite their importance in quality. This research aimed to investigate variations of protein MWD parameters and their associations with gluten strength in winter waxy wheat.
Findings: Winter waxy wheat genotypes varied significantly (p < 0.001) for most protein MWD parameters including SDS‐extractable polymeric protein (EPP) and unextractable polymeric protein (UPP) fractions, which are major components of gluten proteins. Allelic variation of HMW glutenin subunits had significant influence on variations of EPP and UPP in waxy genotypes. Negative correlations for EPP and positive correlations for UPP were observed with mixograph peak time and gluten index for wheat genotypes. In particular, highly significant (p < 0.001) correlations were observed between mixograph peak time and the proportion of EPP in total protein for waxy genotypes.
Conclusions: Winter waxy wheat genotypes showed significant variations for EPP and UPP parameters, which were associated with variation of gluten strength.
Significance and novelty: This research identified variation of protein MWD parameters and their associations with gluten strength. The information should be valuable in segregating winter …

Merely viewing objects within reachable space can activate motor cortical networks and potentiate movement. This holds potential value for smooth interaction with objects in our surroundings, and could offer an advantage for quickly generating targeted hand movements (e.g. grasping a support rail to maintain stability). The present study investigated if viewing a wall-mounted safety handle resulted in automatic activation of motor cortical networks, and if this effect changes with age. Twenty-five young adults (18–30 years) and seventeen older adults (65+ years) were included in this study. Single-pulse, transcranial magnetic stimulation was applied over the motor cortical hand representation of young …

Judgments Of Service Coordinator Practices And Transition-Related Outcomes For Children And Families, Anne George-Puskar
Doctoral Dissertations
The transition between IDEA Part C early intervention and Part B 619 preschool special education is one of many transitions experienced by young children with disabilities and their families. Transition is a continuous process, not a discrete event, and Part C service coordinators are charged with facilitating the early intervention transition process for children and families (IDEA, 636. 20 USC § 1436, 2004). An exploratory study was conducted to better understand service coordinator reported practices and child and family transition outcomes using case study research methodology. Eleven participating Part C service coordinators described judgments of their experiences with two families, …
Optimal Selection Of Test Designs And Sensor Sets For Active Fault Diagnosis, Kyle Palmer
Optimal Selection Of Test Designs And Sensor Sets For Active Fault Diagnosis, Kyle Palmer
Doctoral Dissertations
Fault detection and isolation (FDI) is crucial to identifying problems that can occur in complex systems. Many industrial systems require the implementation of model-based FDI to reduce the risk of system failure and increase good performance while minimizing the use of additional hardware. Active FDI has become increasingly popular as it uses auxiliary tests to reduce the impact of uncertainty and improve fault diagnosis. A methodical approach is needed to consistently generate feasible test designs for the optimal detectability and isolability of faults in targeted systems. The focus of this dissertation is to design a general framework that improves the …
