Blood hemoglobin level (Hgb) measurement has a vital role in the diagnosis, evaluation, and management of numerous diseases. We describe the use of smartphone video imaging and an artificial neural network (ANN) system to estimate Hgb levels non-invasively. We recorded 10 second-300 frame fingertip videos using a smartphone in 75 adults. Red, green, and blue pixel intensities were estimated for each of 100 area blocks in each frame and the patterns across the 300 frames were described. ANN was then used to develop a model using the extracted video features to predict hemoglobin levels. In our study sample, with patients …

Global Connectivity And Function Of Descending Spinal Input Revealed By 3d Microscopy And Retrograde Transduction, Zimei Wang, Brian Maunze, Yunfang Wang, Pantelis Tsoulfas, Murray G. Blackmore
Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
The brain communicates with the spinal cord through numerous axon tracts that arise from discrete nuclei, transmit distinct functions, and often collateralize to facilitate the coordination of descending commands. This complexity presents a major challenge to interpreting functional outcomes from therapies that target supraspinal connectivity after injury or disease, while the wide distribution of supraspinal nuclei complicates the delivery of therapeutics. Here we harness retrograde viral vectors to overcome these challenges. We demonstrate that injection of AAV2-Retro to the cervical spinal cord of adult female mice results in highly efficient transduction of supraspinal populations throughout the brainstem, midbrain, and cortex. …
Statistical Aspects Of Music Mining: Naive Dictionary Representation, Qiuyi Wu
Statistical Aspects Of Music Mining: Naive Dictionary Representation, Qiuyi Wu
Theses
Extensive studies have been conducted on both musical scores and audio tracks of western classical music with the finality of learning and detecting the key in which a particular piece of music was played. Both the Bayesian Approach and modern unsupervised learning via latent Dirichlet allocation have been used for such learning tasks. In this research work, we propose and develop the novel idea of treating musical sheets as literary documents in the traditional text analytics parlance, to fully benefit from the vast amount of research already existing in statistical text mining and topic modeling.
We specifically introduce the idea …
Modeling And Extraction Of Transport Parameters To Simulate Drug Delivery In The Murine Cochlea, Kevin Wilson
Modeling And Extraction Of Transport Parameters To Simulate Drug Delivery In The Murine Cochlea, Kevin Wilson
Theses
The usage of 1D and 3D models to simulate drug transport through the inner ear is a prominent method in cochlear fluid pharmacokinetics. However, the data used to create these models, is often based on invasive sampling methods that limit the spatial resolution given the size of the cochlear compartments within which solute can be measured. In this work by leveraging 3-D registered micro-Computed Tomography (μCT) scans of the murine cochlea that have been taken as iodinated contrast agent is delivered to it, we extract transport parameters and simulate a forward 1D model that allows variable and pulsatile delivery profiles …

We study the process e+e−→e+e−η′ in the double-tag mode and measure for the first time the γ*γ*→ η′ transition form factor Fη′ (Q 2 1 , Q2 2) in the momentum-transfer range 2< Q 2 1 , Q2 2 60 GeV 2 . The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of around 469 fb− 1 collected at the PEP-II e +e − collider with the BABAR detector at center-of-mass energies near 10.6 GeV.

Innocent Heart Murmur., Arpan R. Doshi
Innocent Heart Murmur., Arpan R. Doshi
Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
Heart murmur is the most common reason for a referral to a pediatric cardiologist. Virtually all children have a heart murmur during their childhood. Less than 1% of murmurs are pathological in children. Innocent/functional heart murmur is the most common type of heart murmur. There are multiple theories proposed to identify etiology of innocent heart murmur with varying consensus, but everybody agrees that innocent heart murmur does not carry any morbidity or mortality risk. Even today, heart murmur is associated with high physician uncertainty and parental anxiety. Extensive cardiac evaluation for such a benign finding is also associated with high …
Lexical Retrieval Inhibition From Semantically Related Retrieval Primes, Abhilasha Ashok Kumar
Lexical Retrieval Inhibition From Semantically Related Retrieval Primes, Abhilasha Ashok Kumar
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The phenomenological experience of lexical retrieval involves conscious and active attempts to retrieve semantically related information, but the direct influence of this retrieval process on subsequent retrieval is presently unknown. We investigated the influence of passively viewing or actively retrieving different types of information at the critical moment preceding lexical retrieval through a novel priming paradigm. Participants attempted to retrieve target words (e.g., FOLIAGE) from their low-frequency definitions or descriptions (e.g., the leafy parts of a plant or tree, collectively). Across five experiments, target retrieval was preceded by the brief presentation of a prime word (Experiment 1), progressive demasking of …

Evaluation Of Moisture Susceptibility Of Asphalt Binders Using Atomic Force Microscopy (Afm), Sumon Roy
Student Theses and Dissertations
Stripping related moisture damage in asphalt pavement has been recognized as a serious concern to the state Departments of Transportations (DOTs). The current moisture sensitivity tests methods are mostly conducted at micro and macro levels and focused on qualitative measurements. In this study, an atomic level investigation is done to quantify the moisture damage of the asphalt binders. Binders used in this study include two Performance Grade (PG) base binders along with their modified counterparts using polyphosphoric acid (PPA), styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), and SBS plus PPA. Three different types of liquid anti-stripping agents (LAAs) are also evaluated in this study. The …
