The Impact Of Community Banks On The Communities That They Serve, Latham Hetland Dec 2018

The Impact Of Community Banks On The Communities That They Serve, Latham Hetland

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

Community banks have long been staples of the communities in which they serve. This paper highlights how they are continuing to have a strong impact on their communities while accommodating the needs of the future. The first way in which community banks impact their communities is through the economy, providing lending activity and financial resources for community members. Community banks also have a large impact on their communities by the way they encourage altruism and expect their employees to be involved and invested in the community. These forms of impact, combined with community banks meeting the needs and desires of …

Peruvian Pinnipeds As Archivists Of Enso Effects, Mickie Rae Edwards Dec 2018

Peruvian Pinnipeds As Archivists Of Enso Effects, Mickie Rae Edwards

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Environmental fluctuations in the eastern Pacific Ocean are reflected in the tissues of some of its most vulnerable apex predators, the Peruvian fur seal (PFS) Arctocephalus australis ssp.and the South American sea lion (SASL) Otaria byronia. These large pinnipeds live in sympatry along the Pacific coastline of South America and forage within the neritic waters over the continental shelf. The coastal waters off Peru are a region of great environmental fluctuations due to periodic, oscillating El Niño- La Niña- Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events, which result in ecosystem-wide food web changes. Pinniped vibrissae (whiskers) are continuously growing keratinous tissues and …

Why The Endangered Species Act Shouldn’T Be Endangered, Ryan Kendall Dec 2018

Why The Endangered Species Act Shouldn’T Be Endangered, Ryan Kendall

Op-Eds from ENSC230 Energy and the Environment: Economics and Policies

The Trump Administration has announced that they intend to rework the endangered species act. Unsurprisingly, they plan to rework in ways that have the potential to undermine its effectiveness.

One would think that reworking the act would potentially increase its effectiveness, given the nearly fifty years that we have had to advance our knowledge since it was passed. Unfortunately, the opposite may very well be true.

The new changes to the act would allow for the decision of whether or not to list an animal to be made not just by scientific data, but also by determining the economic impact …

Elevating The Head Of Bed During Preoxygenation For Obese Patients Undergoing General Anesthesia: A Clinical Policy Proposal, Brian F. Seymour Jr. Dec 2018

Elevating The Head Of Bed During Preoxygenation For Obese Patients Undergoing General Anesthesia: A Clinical Policy Proposal, Brian F. Seymour Jr.

Doctoral Projects

Preoxygenation plays a vital role in ensuring patient safety for all patient populations, especially those considered clinically obese. The negative pathophysiological effects obesity has related to body habitus and respiratory mechanics increases the risk of unexpected adverse events. Obese patients encounter a 50% decrease in functional residual capacity (FRC) when undergoing general anesthesia. Dixon et al., (2005) addressed the link between efficient oxygenation and improving oxygen storage by lessening atelectasis and intrapulmonary shunting via preoxygenation in a more upright position. Can standardizing preoxygenation techniques among anesthesia providers improve patient safety and decrease hospital system’s risk by implementing an evidence-based clinical …

Best Practice Policy Recommendation For Neuraxial Anesthesia Skin Antiseptic Solutions, Kyle Adams Dec 2018

Best Practice Policy Recommendation For Neuraxial Anesthesia Skin Antiseptic Solutions, Kyle Adams

Doctoral Projects

A clinical affiliate hospital in Mississippi lacked a best practice clinical policy regarding the most appropriate skin preparation solution to use prior to neuraxial anesthesia. The evidence showed that alcoholic chlorhexidine is the optimal solution due to advanced characteristics which help reduce infection. Reducing infections can potentially reduce further complications for the patient, hospitalization length, and cost. Also, chlorhexidine was found safe to use for neuraxial anesthesia if cross-contamination is avoided and adequate drying time is allowed. Lastly, alcoholic povidone-iodine is an appropriate alternate if 0.5% chlorhexidine is unavailable.

A best practice clinical policy was formulated and presented to a …

Healthy Food Options At Dollar Discount Stores Are Equivalent In Quality And Lower In Price Compared To Grocery Stores: An Examination In Las Vegas, Nv, Courtney Coughenour, Timothy J. Bungum, M. Nikki Regalado

School of Public Health Faculty Research

Food deserts indicate limited access to and affordability of healthy foods. One potential mediator is the availability of healthy food in non-traditional outlets such as dollar-discount stores, stores selling produce at the fixed $1 price. The purpose of this study was to compare availability, quality, price differences in ‘healthier’ versus ‘regular’ food choices, price per each food item, and summary score in dollar-discount stores to grocery stores in Las Vegas using the NEMS-S; a protocol consisting of three subscores—availability, quality, price of healthier versus regular food, and a summary score. The Circulation Of Climate Change Denial Online: Rhetorical And Networking Strategies On Facebook, Emma Frances Bloomfield, Denise Tillery Dec 2018

The Circulation Of Climate Change Denial Online: Rhetorical And Networking Strategies On Facebook, Emma Frances Bloomfield, Denise Tillery

Communication Studies Faculty Research

This study uses a topical, rhetorical approach to analyze how climate change denial circulates online through the 25 most popular posts on the Watts Up With That and the Global Warming Policy Forum Facebook pages. These groups adopt the appearance of credibility through reposting and hyperlinking, thus establishing a supportive, networked space among other skeptical sites, while distancing readers from original sources of scientific information. Visitors use a variety of rhetorical strategies to echo posts’ main themes and to discredit alternative viewpoints. Differences between the topoi and rhetorical strategies of WUWT and the GWPF show that the climate change denial …

Chief Justice John Roberts rightly — albeit in an uncharacteristically direct manner — defended the integrity of the federal judiciary and its members from a direct affront from the president of the United States. Roberts’s defense sent President Donald Trump atwitter in a series of messages that doubled down on his previous ridicule of an “Obama Judge” from the “total disaster” Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. The 2017 Dagstuhl Seminar on Computational Proteomics provided an opportunity for a broad discussion on the current state and future directions of the generation and use of peptide tandem mass spectrometry spectral libraries. Their use in proteomics is growing slowly, but there are multiple challenges in the field that must be addressed to further increase the adoption of spectral libraries and related techniques. The primary bottlenecks are the paucity of high quality and comprehensive libraries and the general difficulty of adopting spectral library searching into existing workflows. There are several existing spectral library formats, but none captures a satisfactory level …

Bottom-up proteomics relies on the proteolytic or chemical cleavage of proteins into peptides, the identification of those peptides via mass spectrometry, and the mapping of the identified peptides back to the reference proteome to infer which possible proteins are identified. Reliable mapping of peptides to proteins still poses substantial challenges when considering similar proteins, protein families, splice isoforms, sequence variation, and possible residue mass modifications, combined with an imperfect and incomplete understanding of the proteome. The ProteoMapper tool enables a comprehensive and rapid mapping of peptides to a reference proteome. The indexer component creates a segmented index for an input …

Progress in surveillance technology has led to the development of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) systems in cities around the world. Cameras are considered instrumental in crime reduction, yet existing research does not unambiguously answer the question whether installing them affects the number of crimes committed. The quasi-experimental method usually applied to evaluate CCTV systems’ effectiveness faces difficulties with data quantity and quality. Data quantity has a bearing on the number of crimes that can be conclusively inferred using the experimental procedure. Data quality affects the level of crime data aggregation. The lack of the exact location of a crime incident in …
