Permeability Changes And Effect Of Chemotherapy In Brain Adjacent To Tumor In An Experimental Model Of Metastatic Brain Tumor From Breast Cancer, Afroz S. Mohammad, Chris E. Adkins, Neal Shah, Rawaa Aljammal, Jessica I. G. Griffith, Rachel M. Tallman, Katherine L. Jarrell, Paul R. Lockman

Clinical and Translational Science Institute

Background: Brain tumor vasculature can be significantly compromised and leakier than that of normal brain blood vessels. Little is known if there are vascular permeability alterations in the brain adjacent to tumor (BAT). Changes in BAT permeability may also lead to increased drug permeation in the BAT, which may exert toxicity on cells of the central nervous system. Herein, we studied permeation changes in BAT using quantitative fluorescent microscopy and autoradiography, while the effect of chemotherapy within the BAT region was determined by staining for activated astrocytes. Methods: Human metastatic breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231Br) were injected into left ventricle of …

Opioid Use And The Presence Of Alzheimer's Disease And Related Dementias Among Elderly Medicare Beneficiaries Diagnosed With Chronic Pain Conditions, Chan Shen, Xiaohui Zhao, Nilanjana Dwibedi, R. Constance Wiener, Patricia A. Findley, Usha Sambamoorthi

Clinical and Translational Science Institute

Introduction: There is scant literature on the use of opioids among community-dwelling elderly with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD). Methods: We adopted a retrospective, cross-sectional study design using Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey data from 2006 to 2013. The study sample included elderly community-dwelling Medicare beneficiaries who were diagnosed with chronic pain conditions and had Medicare fee-for-service plans for the entire year. We conducted bivariate c2 test and multivariate logistic regression to examine the relationship between opioid use and ADRD status. Results: The study sample included 19,347 Medicare beneficiaries; 7.7% of them had ADRD. We found no statistically significant difference …

Creating Change In Intercollegiate Athletics: The Sexual Assault Prevention Paradigm For Athletic Departments, Kristy Mccray, Sue Sutherland, Donna L. Pastore

Health and Sport Sciences Faculty Scholarship

In 2011, the Office for Civil Rights issued a “Dear Colleague Letter” instructing universities to take action regarding sexual assault on college campuses. Specifically, universities must better educate students on the prevention of sexual assault, in the hope of reducing violence against women. Previous research is inconclusive on the involvement of intercollegiate student-athletes in incidences of sexual assault; however, recent high-profile cases of sexual misconduct at universities indicate that student-athletes are not immune to this issue. The purpose of this study was to explore how sexual assault is viewed within the culture of intercollegiate athletics, including education, occurrence, and prevention. …

The Impact Of Music On Language Acquisition, Courtney A. Rieb Dec 2018

The Impact Of Music On Language Acquisition, Courtney A. Rieb

Honors Capstones

More and more students in the classroom are English learners (ELs) (U.S. Department of Education, 2017). Despite the historically strong evidence that music is beneficial to the language acquisition process for ELs, there is very little music education occurring (Engh, 2013; Salcedo, 2010). The more teachers know about the benefits of implementing music in the classroom, it is hopeful that they will be more likely to include music in their curricula. The purpose of this literature review is to explore the positive impact of music on language acquisition and communicate the role that music can play in lowering the affective …

Kekuaokalani: An Historical Fiction Exploration Of The Hawaiian Iconoclasm, Alex Oldroyd Dec 2018

Kekuaokalani: An Historical Fiction Exploration Of The Hawaiian Iconoclasm, Alex Oldroyd

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis offers an exploration of the Hawaiian Iconoclasm of 1819 through the lens of an historical fiction novella. The thesis consists of two parts: a critical introduction outlining the theoretical background and writing process and the novella itself. 1819 was a year of incredible change on Hawaiian Islands. Kamehameha, the Great Uniter and first monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi, had recently died, thousands of the indigenous population were dying, and foreign powers were arriving with increasing frequency, bringing with them change that could not be undone. With the death of Kamehameha, Hawaiʻi’s rulers faced the impossible of task …

Information Literacy Assessment For Instruction And Improvement And Demonstration Of Library Value: Comparing Locally-Grown And Commercially Created Tests, Kathy E. Clarke, Carolyn Radcliff Dec 2018

Information Literacy Assessment For Instruction And Improvement And Demonstration Of Library Value: Comparing Locally-Grown And Commercially Created Tests, Kathy E. Clarke, Carolyn Radcliff

Libraries

This paper describes two types of fixed-choice information literacy tests, one locally created and one nationally developed. The Madison Research Essentials Skills Test (MREST) is part of a tutorial-test model for first-year library instruction at James Madison University. Students must pass the test before they can move to sophomore status. This testing process relies on a collaborative model between JMU Libraries, the General Education program, and the Center for Assessment Research Studies (CARS). On the national level, the recently-created Threshold Achievement Test for Information Literacy (TATIL) is based on the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy and in four test modules …

Dynamical Electron Vortices In Attosecond Double Photoionization Of H2, Jean Marcel Ngoko Djiokap, A. V. Meremianin, N. L. Manakov, L. B. Madsen, S. X. Hu, Anthony F. Starace Dec 2018

Dynamical Electron Vortices In Attosecond Double Photoionization Of H2, Jean Marcel Ngoko Djiokap, A. V. Meremianin, N. L. Manakov, L. B. Madsen, S. X. Hu, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

We study electron momentum vortices in single-photon double ionization of H2 by time-delayed, counterrotating, elliptically polarized attosecond pulses propagating along kˆ either parallel or perpendicular to the molecular axis R. For kˆ | R, kinematical vortices occur similar to those found for He. For kˆ ⊥ R, we find dynamical vortex structures originating from an ellipticity-dependent interplay of 1∑+u and 1∏+u continuum amplitudes. We propose a complete experiment to determine the magnitudes and relative phase of these amplitudes by varying pulse ellipticities and time delays.

Interactions Between Disciplinary Practices And Joint Work In Undergraduate Physics Research Experiences, Gina Quan, Chandra Turpen, Andrew Elby Dec 2018

Interactions Between Disciplinary Practices And Joint Work In Undergraduate Physics Research Experiences, Gina Quan, Chandra Turpen, Andrew Elby

Faculty Publications

We analyze how participating in undergraduate research experiences (UREs) influenced physics students’ trajectories of participation within the community of practice of physics researchers. Students in the study participated in an elective seminar in which they were paired with graduate student and faculty mentors on physics research projects and participated in weekly discussions about research. Using video data from student interviews and mentor interviews, we characterize two aspects of students’ engagement in the physics community of practice. First, we find variations in their engagement in physics practice, which we characterize as physics activities that are connected and purposeful. Second, we characterize …
