Disrupting Desalination: Novel Energy Efficient Technologies For Hypersaline Brines, Ngai Yin Yip Dec 2018

Disrupting Desalination: Novel Energy Efficient Technologies For Hypersaline Brines, Ngai Yin Yip

Sustainability Seminar Series

Management and treatment of hypersaline brines, e.g., produced water from oil and gas extraction, zero liquid discharge effluent, and flue gas desulfurization wastewater, are of growing environmental importance. Prevailing practice of distilling brines is highly energy-intensive and costly because the evaporation of water is enthalpically unfavorable. Here, we present two novel technologies for hypersaline desalination: cascading osmotically mediated reverse osmosis (COMRO) and temperature swing solvent extraction (TSSE). The first technology, COMRO, utilizes the novel design of bilateral countercurrent reverse osmosis stages to lessening the osmotic pressure difference across the membrane, thereby simultaneously depressing the hydraulic pressure needed and reducing energy …

The targeted portions to display the content, also known as secondary spaces, are detected via heat maps, which are based on the user’s focus on the screen. The secondary spaces are regions, where the user’s attention is least centered, that is, the regions, where the color density is least. Motion sickness is a common problem experienced by individuals travelling in enclosed vehicles. Such condition occurs in a ship/boat encountering rough waves (sea-sickness), or a land vehicle going through a rugged terrain, in aircraft, etc. It happens when there is a mismatch between the motion perceived by the human vestibular system in the ear and the motion seen by the eyes. The interior of a ship/motor vehicle is visually observed by person to be stationary, while the vestibular system (which is a fluid filled structure inside the ear) still perceives the motion of the ship/vehicle. The present disclosure aims to …

Thucydides And Rationalism A Study Beyond Rational Choice, Spyridon N. Litsas

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development

This article compares two different forms of political rationalism; The well-known Rational Choice Theory and the formula deriving from the Thucydidean analysis in the Peloponnesian War, the Thucydidean Rational Choice Theory. I argue that while Rational Choice Theory is designed to analyse domestic socio-political and economic event, the Thucydidean Rational Choice Theory is the procedure for presenting international analyses instead.

Book Review- Climate Leviathan A Political Theory Of Our Planetary Future, Chris Goldie Dec 2018

Book Review- Climate Leviathan A Political Theory Of Our Planetary Future, Chris Goldie

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development

Climate Leviathan provides an account of the possible trajectories of climate politics, arguing that adaptation to rather than mitigation of global warming is the most likely scenario, a planetary management organised on the basis of new forms of political sovereignty. It is argued that Climate Leviathan’s ambition to project sovereignty globally and on the basis of existing social relations will face enormous problems, not least because of its incapacity to address issues of climate justice, equality and solidarity. Conversely, a non-capitalist form of global leviathan based on a change of policy in China and revolutionary upheaval in Asia would be …

The Politics Of Non-Refoulement And The Syrian Refugee Crisis, Akinrinde O. Olufemi Dec 2018

The Politics Of Non-Refoulement And The Syrian Refugee Crisis, Akinrinde O. Olufemi

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development

The rise of refugee problems across the globe especially the Syrian refugee crisis underlines inherently the definitional and operational deficiencies of the 1951 Geneva Refugee Convention that was designed to facilitate the protection of the rights of refugees and asylum-seekers to safety and express access to neighboring states during emergencies, wars, man-made and natural disasters. Despite the establishment of the Geneva Refugee Convention of 1951 and other International regimes, the rising numbers associated with refugees in Syria and the rest of the world are disturbing. With over five million persons internally displaced and more than two million people seeking refuge …

Educate, Empower, Employ, Danielle L. Bernard, Marybeth Bognar, Jami Hunter

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development

Since the start of the Syrian Civil War in 2011, Lebanon is estimated to have taken in more than two million Syrian refugees. Due to policy and security obstacles, many of these refugees are considered by the Lebanese government to be living in Lebanon illegally, which restricts, among other aspects, their ability to continue employment or education. Based on field research conducted in-country through interviews, surveys, and focus groups, the authors have identified areas where innovative and inclusive higher education opportunities can be provided for Syrian refugees in Lebanon to allow them to move forward with their lives in self-sufficiency …

Brazil As A Leader In The Latin American Refugees' Regime, Daniel Jatoba, Patricia Nabuco Martuscelli

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development

The article presents an exploratory study of Brazil´s role in the consolidation of the Latin American refugees’ regime. Our analytical perspective considers that there is a regional refugees’ regime in Latin America, one gradually constituted since the conference in Cartagena in 1984, when the countries of this region established principles, norms, rules, and decision-making procedures related to the refugees’ issue, including in the existing regime an expanded concept of refugees, more encompassing than the UN Convention’s concept (1951). Moreover, and having examined different sources of evidence, including a set of experts’ judgments and organizational reports, we argue that the country …

Africanistan An Afghanistan In France's Backyard, Dominique Austin

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development

Since the advent of the global War on Terror, we have seen the growth and spread of many transnational terrorist networks to which the United States, backed by other major powers, has sought to eradicate. For the US., the major enemy was the Taliban and now ISIS. For France, Al Qaeda of the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), which operates in North and West Africa, has had growing influence, especially in Mali, which recently faced a military coup and a civil war. In 2013, France launched a military operation in conjunction with the Malian government to topple AQIM forces in the north …
