Incarcerated Parenting: How Family Relationships Can Be Beneficial, Bailey Porter
Incarcerated Parenting: How Family Relationships Can Be Beneficial, Bailey Porter
Liberal Arts Capstones
The United States maintains one of the highest incarceration rates in the entire world. The disturbing reality of these mass incarcerations is that they do not exclusively impact the offender, but the friends, family, and most importantly, the children of these incarcerated individuals. A startling number of children in the United States are separated from their biological parents through incarcerations. The effects of separation are rarely considered in legislation.
In the past few years, there has been a rise in programs designed to help maintain relationships between families and incarcerated individuals. One of the goals of these family programs is …
Growing Social Connection: A Case Study Of A Therapeutic Farm Community, Theresa Aldrich
Growing Social Connection: A Case Study Of A Therapeutic Farm Community, Theresa Aldrich
Honors Program Theses and Projects
This is a case study of a single therapeutic farm community with the goal of understanding the community as a whole organization. Therapeutic farm communities are largely under researched. The studies that do exist focus on evaluating client outcomes without adequate description of the organizations which produce the outcomes. To provide an in depth description of the therapeutic farm community which was selected for this case study, ethnographic research methods were utilized. Data analysis was conducted as an inductive process, drawing conclusions from coded and organized ethnographic field notes using postmodernism as a theoretical lens. This guided the interpretation of …
"This Doesn't Happen Here": Child Sex Trafficking In Rural Oklahoma, Denise Blum, Tania Benoiton, Sean Kinder
"This Doesn't Happen Here": Child Sex Trafficking In Rural Oklahoma, Denise Blum, Tania Benoiton, Sean Kinder
Administrative Issues Journal
The sex trafficking of minors is a hard-to-detect and underreported crime. Its insidiousness makes it exceedingly difficult to recognize, and treatment, once a victim is recovered, is long-term and costly. Urban areas are in the spotlight when it comes to the trafficking of minors. However, the unsuspecting rural context consists of specific dynamics that may make children in the countryside more vulnerable than in the city. Using the case of an Oklahoma town, the researchers conducted a presentation on child sex trafficking for school personnel at a K-8 rural school. They administered pre- and post-surveys and conducted follow-up interviews with …

Examing Patterns Of Intended Response To Tornado Warnings Among Residents Of Tennessee, United States, Through A Latent Class Analysis Approach, Jayme E. Walters, Lisa Reyes Mason, Kelsey N. Ellis
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
In the past five years, the southern region of the United States has had a large number of fatal tornadoes. Previous research indicates that residents of this area may not be taking appropriate shelter. The present study uses a random sample of Tennessee residents (N = 1126) and the latent class analysis (LCA) technique to explore discrete types of responders according to their pattern of intended behaviors when presented with a tornado warning scenario in the daytime or nighttime. LCA revealed three distinct groups in the day subsample – Tech Users, Typical Actors, and Passive Reactors – and three in …
The Principal Problem With Principal Components Regression, Heidi Margaret Artigue, Gary Smith
The Principal Problem With Principal Components Regression, Heidi Margaret Artigue, Gary Smith
Pomona Faculty Publications and Research
Principal components regression (PCR) reduces a large number of explanatory variables down to a small number of principal components. PCR is thought to be more useful, the more numerous the potential explanatory variables. The reality is that a large number of candidate explanatory variables does not make PCR more valuable; instead, it magnifies the failings of PCR.

Effect Of Ultrafiltration During Hemodialysis On Hepatic And Total-Body Water: An Observational Study., Claire J Grant, Trevor P Wade, Charles A Mckenzie, Guido Filler, Christopher W Mcintyre, Huang S. Shih-Han
Paediatrics Publications
Background
The hepatic circulation is involved in adaptive systemic responses to circulatory stress. However, it is vulnerable to both chronic hypervolemia and cardiac dysfunction. The influence of hemodialysis (HD) and ultrafiltration (UF) upon liver water content has been understudied. We conducted a detailed pilot study to characterize the effects of HD upon liver water content and stiffness, referenced to peripheral fluid mobilization and total body water.
Methods
We studied 14 established HD patients without liver disease. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) together with ultrasound-based elastography and bioimpedance assessment were employed to measure hepatic water content and stiffness, body composition, and water …

Overheard And Misheard: The Paranoid Unreliable Narrator Of The Conversation, Ryan Jones
Overheard And Misheard: The Paranoid Unreliable Narrator Of The Conversation, Ryan Jones
Cinesthesia
The Conversation is a character study of an individual consumed by his fear of the death of privacy. Each of the film’s major formal elements ultimately seek to trap the audience in the world of Harry Caul: the paranoia, the desperate need for privacy, the isolation. Through careful sound and visual design, the film keeps its audience at the level of its characters and implicates them in the fear that pushes the protagonist to overturn his life. This paper seeks to describe the formal aspects of the film which produces these reactions.

Author Meets Critics: Responding To Daniel Castelo’S Pentecostalism As A Christian Mystical Tradition, Kyle Smith, Leah Payne, Sammy Alfaro, Daniel Castelo
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
Except: "Daniel Castelo’s Pentecostalism as a Christian Mystical Tradition is a theological monograph, but, like the movement he seeks to categorize, Castelo’s work transcends traditional disciplinary lines. As a historian, my comments aim to show what Castelo’s categorical work does for historians seeking to explore and understand the movement. My response analyzes the categories present within Castelo’s title and explicated throughout the book: Pentecostalism, Christian mysticism, and tradition."

When I want to wear my favorite pair of skinny jeans, I ask my husband to hold them 50 yards away from me. Then I get a good running start before I pole vault into them. Next, I do a little ritual dance — something like an Irish jig and Russian hopak mixed together, with lots of kicks out to the side, hands at hips — begging for the seams to be strengthened for the fearsome battle they must wage all day.

Since I am in the holiday spirit (and, having just consumed a mug of hot toddy, a glass of eggnog and a nip of cheer, the holiday spirits are in me), I have decided to follow in that great tradition of boring everyone silly by writing a Christmas letter.

Stress, Resilience, And Well-Being In Undergraduate Nursing Students, Jamie Waldera, Brittany L. Borhart, Megan R. Panek
Stress, Resilience, And Well-Being In Undergraduate Nursing Students, Jamie Waldera, Brittany L. Borhart, Megan R. Panek
Nursing Masters Papers
Although stress, resiliency, and well-being have been studied individually in nursing students, the relationship among these three concepts has not been well studied in the undergraduate nursing student population. The purpose of this secondary analysis was to examine the relationship of stress, resilience, and well-being in undergraduate nursing students. The primary study was conducted at a Midwestern university with 261 junior and senior nursing students. Primary investigators surveyed 261 students utilizing the Perceived Stress Scale, Connor-Davidson Resiliency Scale 25, and Linear Analog Scale Assessment. This study found that stress and well-being were negatively correlated (p < 0.0001), stress and resilience were negatively correlated (p < 0.0001), and well-being and resilience were positively correlated (p < 0.0001). Additionally, these concepts were compared to students’ academic terms. Stress decreased in students throughout their academic terms while well-being increased. Resilience did not change in relation to academic term.

Assessment Of The Attractiveness Of Foreign Markets – A Case Study. Comparison Of Armenia And Poland, Andranik Muradyan
Journal of Marketing and Consumer Behaviour in Emerging Markets
From the international marketing point of view, it is important to assess the attractiveness of the target country that can be interesting to foreign investors. It is worth analyzing all the possible opportunities and threats that may arise in each geographic market. It is also needed to assess the country’s strengths and weaknesses and understand how these characteristic features can affect the company’s growth perspectives. Each country has a specific political environment, socio-demographic features, economic situation, technological conditions, cultural identity, unique natural environment and legal rules. At the same time, there are regional and global geopolitical tendencies, common political structures, …

How Wheelchair Basketball Changed My Life, Katherine Torres

I have been around sports all my life. My older brother played basketball when we were kids and I always remembered sitting in the stands cheering him on. He loved the sport so much that my parents bought him a basketball hoop so he could play basketball at home whenever he wanted.
Martin V. United States, Mitch L. Werbell V
Martin V. United States, Mitch L. Werbell V
Public Land & Resources Law Review
In Martin v. United States, the Federal Circuit Court dismissed a Fifth Amendment regulatory takings and exaction claim for want of ripeness when the claimant failed to apply for a permit, which would have allowed for an assessment of the cost of compliance with governmentally imposed requirements. By finding the claim unripe, the court stood firm on the historical view that federal courts may only adjudicate land-use regulatory takings and inverse condemnation claims on the merits after a regulating entity has made a final decision. However, jurisprudential evolution of the ripeness doctrine and judicial review of takings claims may …

Cornhusker Economics
One of the maxims often heard in economics, agriculture, and politics is that those who do not learn from history are bound to repeat it. At first glance, this is a pessimistic view of human behavior. However, I believe that in some part it is a reflection of the positive spirit exhibited by many Americans. While it is true some have not bothered to learn from history, others have simply emphasized the positive times while simultaneously limiting the memory of more challenging experiences.
Essay: Reconsidering Contractual Consent: Why We Shouldn't Worry Too Much About Boilerplate And Other Puzzles, Nathan B. Oman
Essay: Reconsidering Contractual Consent: Why We Shouldn't Worry Too Much About Boilerplate And Other Puzzles, Nathan B. Oman
Brooklyn Law Review
Our theoretical approaches to contract law dramatically over-estimated the importance of voluntary consent. Voluntary consent plays, at best, a secondary role in the normative justification of contract law. Rather, contract law should be seen as part of an evolutionary process of finding solutions to problems of social organization in markets. Like natural evolution, this process depends on variation and feedback. Unlike natural evolution, both the variation and the feedback mechanisms are products of human invention. On this theory, consent serves two roles in contract law. First, consent makes freedom of contract possible and freedom of contract generates variation in transactional …
Improving Access To Justice By Enforcing The Free Speech Clause, Michele Cotton
Improving Access To Justice By Enforcing The Free Speech Clause, Michele Cotton
Brooklyn Law Review
State laws often make it a crime for a nonlawyer to give a person “legal advice,” even though it is speech of a sort that is usually protected by the First Amendment. As this article demonstrates, appellate courts have been unanimous in their conclusion that such speech is not protected, seemingly settling the issue. However, this article shows that these decisions are scattershot in their approaches, unconvincing in their reasoning, and inept at applying existing First Amendment precedents. In fact, Supreme Court jurisprudence indicates that unauthorized practice of law restrictions against nonlawyers giving legal advice violate the Free Speech Clause. …
