Revised And Updated Vascular Plant Checklists For The Baja California Northern Pacific Islands, Sula Vanderplank, Jon Rebman, Exequiel Ezcurra
Western North American Naturalist
In the last 3 years, significant advances have occurred in our knowledge of the flora of the northern Baja California Pacific Islands. The availability of herbarium specimen data has been significantly increased, and 2 expeditions were undertaken to 7 of the 8 islands in 2015 and 2016. These events have resulted in a wealth of new plant records from the islands, which are here reported with updated taxonomy for the archipelago. The results include 586 vascular plant taxa on the Baja California Northern Pacific Islands; 118 taxa were new, and 54 previously reported taxa were vouchered. The checklists include the …

Manganese-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Overview And Central Nervous System Applications With A Focus On Neurodegeneration, Ryan A. Cloyd, Shon A. Koren, Jose F. Abisambra
Physiology Faculty Publications
Manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI) rose to prominence in the 1990s as a sensitive approach to high contrast imaging. Following the discovery of manganese conductance through calcium-permeable channels, MEMRI applications expanded to include functional imaging in the central nervous system (CNS) and other body systems. MEMRI has since been employed in the investigation of physiology in many animal models and in humans. Here, we review historical perspectives that follow the evolution of applied MRI research into MEMRI with particular focus on its potential toxicity. Furthermore, we discuss the more current in vivo investigative uses of MEMRI in CNS investigations and …

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries
The Court held that when an insurer breaches its contractual duty to defend the insured, the insurer’s liability is not capped at the policy limits plus the insured’s defense costs; an insurer may be liable for any consequential damages caused by its breach. Moreover, whether the insurer acted in good-faith is irrelevant for determining the damages for a breach of this duty.
Coping During Conventional Submarine Missions: Evidence Of A Third Quarter Phenomenon?, Charles H. Van Wijk
Coping During Conventional Submarine Missions: Evidence Of A Third Quarter Phenomenon?, Charles H. Van Wijk
Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments
The third quarter phenomenon refers to the decline in performance during the third quarter of missions in isolated, confined, and extreme environments, regardless of actual mission duration. This can be observed through changes in cognitive and interpersonal behavior, and an increase in reported negative experiences and undesirable mood states. This effect has been studied in polar and space missions, but there are no available reports on it during submarine missions. This study provides an additional analysis of previously published data that were collected during a conventional submarine patrol mission, to consider whether a stage-model of adaptation (in particular a third …

Ammonia gas sensors are very essential in many industries and everyday life. However, their complicated fabrication process, severe environmental fabrication requirements and desorption of residual ammonia molecules result in high cost and hinder their market acceptance. Here, laser direct writing is used to fabricate three parallel porous 3D graphene lines on a polyimide (PI) tape to simply construct an ammonia gas sensor. The middle one works as an ammonia sensing element and the other two on both sides work as heaters to improve the desorption performance of the sensing element to ammonia gas molecules. The graphene lines were characterized by …
Implementation Of A Delirium Protocol In A Community Living Center: A Short And Long-Term Care Facility, Marguerite C. Burch
Implementation Of A Delirium Protocol In A Community Living Center: A Short And Long-Term Care Facility, Marguerite C. Burch
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
Delirium is the most frequent complication associated with hospitalizations of older adults and is responsible for 17.5 million hospital days at a cost of more than $6 billion each year. It is estimated delirium occurs in approximately 14 – 56% of all hospitalized elderly patients. Outcomes associated with delirium in the adult population are prolonged hospital lengths of stay, increased mortality, and post-hospitalization cognitive impairment. Hospitalized patients diagnosed with delirium may be discharged to rehabilitation centers or nursing homes for recuperation, and/or for permanent residence.
Delirium is often misdiagnosed because the presentation of signs and symptoms mimic other medical conditions …

Parental Verbal Mediation For Children's Internet Use, Daeun Grace Lee
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
This study explores the different communication strategies parents employ when speaking to their children about their Internet use. The Internet is continuously and rapidly expanding in terms of content range and mobility, and is becoming more and more an integrated and essential part of children across the nation. Thus, parents must be willing and equipped to educate their children about their habits of Internet use through effective mediation strategies. The goal of this study is to understand not only how parents speak to their children about their Internet use, but also how parents currently perceive the significance of these conversations. …

During speciation, sex chromosomes often accumulate interspecific genetic incompatibilities faster than the rest of the genome. The drive theory posits that sex chromosomes are susceptible to recurrent bouts of meiotic drive and suppression, causing the evolutionary build- up of divergent cryptic sex-linked drive systems and, incidentally, genetic incompatibilities. To assess the role of drive during speciation, we combine high-resolution genetic mapping of X-linked hybrid male sterility with population genomics analyses of divergence and recent gene flow between the fruitfly species, Drosophila mauritiana and D. simulans. Our findings reveal a high density of genetic incompatibilities and a corresponding dearth of gene …

Dual Functional Metal Oxide Nano-Materials Enabled Sensors For Both Non-Enzymatic Glucose And Solid-State Ph Sensing, Qiuchen Dong
Dual Functional Metal Oxide Nano-Materials Enabled Sensors For Both Non-Enzymatic Glucose And Solid-State Ph Sensing, Qiuchen Dong
Doctoral Dissertations
Glucose sensing and pH sensing are of paramount importance in managing diabetes diseases and accurately monitoring acidity and alkalinity of the solution. To date, numerous reports have reported about solid-state pH sensing and metal oxide based non-enzymatic glucose sensing, however, there is an unmet challenge to realize dual functional sensing elements in a single unit for both glucose sensing and solid-state pH sensing.
As a new class of multifunctional materials, high-temperature annealing enabled iridium oxide nanofibers, rhodium oxide nanocorals, cobalt oxide hollow fiber, and gold-doped iridium oxide nanomaterials were synthesized and then they are first employed as the sensing element …

Electroactive ionic soft actuators, a type of artificial muscles containing a polymer electrolyte membrane sandwiched between two electrodes, have been intensively investigated owing to their potential applications to bioinspired soft robotics, wearable electronics, and active biomedical devices. However, the design and synthesis of an efficient polymer electrolyte suitable for ion migration have been major challenges in developing high-performance ionic soft actuators. Herein, a highly bendable ionic soft actuator based on an unprecedented block copolymer is reported, i.e., polystyrene-b-poly(1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium-4-styrenesulfonate) (PS-b-PSS-EMIm), with a functionally antagonistic core–shell architecture that is specifically designed as an ionic exchangeable polymer electrolyte. The corresponding actuator shows exceptionally …

We report the first observation of the parity-violating gamma-ray asymmetry A(gamma)(np) in neutron-proton capture using polarized cold neutrons incident on a liquid parahydrogen target at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. A(gamma)(np) isolates the Delta I = 1, S-3(1)-> P-3(1) component of the weak nucleon-nucleon interaction, which is dominated by pion exchange and can be directly related to a single coupling constant in either the DDH meson exchange model or pionless effective field theory… See full text for full abstract.
