Essential Library Of World War Ii: The Battle Of Britain, Bailey Ondricek Dec 2018

Essential Library Of World War Ii: The Battle Of Britain, Bailey Ondricek

Children's Book and Media Review

The khaki brown and red accents surrounding black and white war photographs on the cover of this book make it easily identifiable as a World War II text. This narration jumps right in to the Battle of Britain itself, later providing some brief contextualization to the war itself. Each glossy page features a full page photo depicting some aspect of the war accompanied by a sensitive narration of events occurring at the time. A bit lengthy for a traditional picture book, this text has some appeal for both primary and intermediate age children. Young children will be comfortable with the …

Earth Verse: Haiku From The Ground Up, Hannah Webb

Children's Book and Media Review

Earth Verse: Haiku from the Ground Up is a unique book of poetry that brings together both the left and right brain by marrying earth science with art. Each haiku is coupled with an impressionistic illustration by William Grill that, in many cases, further explains the science being described. The book ends with detailed descriptions of the earth sciences found in the poetry.

Plus, as an added bonus, this book can be used by students to learn by themselves just what an actor ought to know while performing. By the end of the book, actors should be able to take the stage and perform small skits and plays (not included) in front of small …

Do You Believe In Unicorns?, Karen Abbott

Children's Book and Media Review

Unicorns are creatures of magic and this is a magical little picture book about them. The book starts out a little slowly by asking the reader if they believe in unicorns. Is the lovely white pony wearing a tall red hat to conceal his horn, or does he have a more logical reason? How about the painted pony in the witches pointy hat? Possibilities exist on every turn of the page until the author reveals the truth—people see what they want to, and magic exists if you believe.

Readers will learn of an Italian study to the coast where a …

Decolonizing Adoption Narratives For Transnational Reproductive Justice, Sung Hee Yook, Hosu Kim Dec 2018

Decolonizing Adoption Narratives For Transnational Reproductive Justice, Sung Hee Yook, Hosu Kim

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article “Decolonizing Adoption Narratives for Transnational Reproductive Justice,” Sung Hee Yook and Hosu Kim examine narratives emerging from transnational adoption practices, focusing on how birth mothers’ narratives—in which a victim-mother makes choices to give a child for adoption in hopes of a better life for the child, and awaits that child’s return—develop alongside and deviate from the normative orders of motherhood. While birth mothers’ self-transformative narrative illuminates their subjectivities—apart from victimhood, simmering in the latent form of agency—Yook and Kim argue that a compelling narrative of self-mastery produces another discursive trap which renders the numerous less-masterful birth mothers …
