Consumer Perceptions: From Myths To Action, Michael P. Vandenbergh, Kristian Steensen Nielsen Dec 2018

Consumer Perceptions: From Myths To Action, Michael P. Vandenbergh, Kristian Steensen Nielsen

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Rapid and transformative changes are required to reduce the adverse consequences of climate change. A growing literature suggests that households can be an important part of efforts to reduce GHG emissions. Transformative change implies modifying actions across different life and consumption domains, but not all actions are equally important. The most promising efforts focus on behaviours with high technical potential (the total emissions reductions possible from the behaviour change) and behavioural plasticity (the extent to which the behaviour can be changed in a given decision environment). Shifting towards a plant-based diet has technical potential that is among the highest of …

Validating The Satisfaction With Travel Scale As A Measure Of Hedonic Subjective Well-Being For Commuting In A U.S. City, Patrick A. Singleton Dec 2018

Validating The Satisfaction With Travel Scale As A Measure Of Hedonic Subjective Well-Being For Commuting In A U.S. City, Patrick A. Singleton

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

The relationships between transportation and well-being are of increasing interest to researchers, practitioners, and policymakers. Stakeholders seeking to improve quality of life and traffic safety require valid and reliable ways of gauging the emotional states of travelers. Psychological scales exist for measuring subjective well-being (SWB), but these instruments have rarely been applied to the travel domain. The Satisfaction with Travel Scale (STS) is a nine-item measure of travel-related hedonic SWB, capturing core affect (emotions) and cognitive evaluations of overall satisfaction associated with personal transportation. Although the STS has been used in an increasing number of studies, questions remain regarding its …

Landscape Modeling Of The Potential Natural Vegetation Of Santa Catalina Island, California, Travis Longcore, Nina Noujdina, Peter J. Dixon Dec 2018

Landscape Modeling Of The Potential Natural Vegetation Of Santa Catalina Island, California, Travis Longcore, Nina Noujdina, Peter J. Dixon

Western North American Naturalist

The vegetation of Santa Catalina Island has been significantly transformed through a history of introduction of exotic plant species and disturbance by large introduced herbivores. Many of these disturbances have been reduced in recent decades, using measures such as carefully controlling the number of bison and removing cattle, sheep, feral pigs, and goats. The success of subsequent vegetation restoration actions depends on the choice of the right plant community for a location, which may not be obvious for an island with extensive areas dominated by exotic species. Environmental niche modeling is an approach to re-create the spatial distribution of habitat …

The Rational Basis Test And Why It Is So Irrational: An Eighty-Year Retrospective, James M. Mcgoldrick Jr. Dec 2018

The Rational Basis Test And Why It Is So Irrational: An Eighty-Year Retrospective, James M. Mcgoldrick Jr.

San Diego Law Review

The Rational Basis test is one of the most common and yet perhaps the most insignificant United States Supreme Court test in the history of the constitution, yet year in year out clients and lawyers will submit another brief hoping against hope that this time there might be a meaningful outcome. There will not be.

This article attempts to explain why the rational basis test is so irrational in its outcome, why basic interests are disregarded in the name of judicial respect for the legislative process, and how easy it would be for there to be a better outcome. The …

Are Passive Index Funds Active Owners? Corporate Governance Consequences Of Passive Investing, Giovanni Strampelli Dec 2018

Are Passive Index Funds Active Owners? Corporate Governance Consequences Of Passive Investing, Giovanni Strampelli

San Diego Law Review

The exponential rise of mutual funds designed to track stock indices has been one of the drivers behind the re-concentration of ownership of listed companies in the United States. Because of the high concentration of the passive index funds industry, the three leading passive fund managers—BlackRock, Vanguard, and State Street—make up an increasingly important component of the shareholder base of listed companies. In spite of this however, it remains questionable whether they are actually interested in playing an active role in the corporate governance of investee companies. In fact, although passive investors are, by definition, focused on the long term …

Mapping Territorial Limitations On Insurance Coverage, Douglas R. Richmond Dec 2018

Mapping Territorial Limitations On Insurance Coverage, Douglas R. Richmond

San Diego Law Review

Globalization has come to financial markets and to innumerable industries. U.S. businesses export and import goods and products; many have done so for decades. Domestic companies that sell materials online almost certainly do some international business. American corporations have foreign facilities or operations. Americans travel internationally with relative ease. For those living in states that adjoin Canada or Mexico, international travel can be accomplished simply by driving across the border.

At the same time, insurance policies sold in the United States frequently contain territorial limitations on coverage that superficially seem out of place when compared to many aspects of modern …

Incentivizing Transparency: Agricultural Benefit Corporations To Improve Consumer Trust, Kathryn Smith Dec 2018

Incentivizing Transparency: Agricultural Benefit Corporations To Improve Consumer Trust, Kathryn Smith

San Diego Law Review

In the face of inadequate, often abysmal agricultural practices and laws that enable them, producers who provide the social good of transparency should receive a benefit. Amidst the debate that all benefit corporations should qualify for special tax treatment, this Comment proposes the development of a federal benefit corporation class offering special tax treatment to worthy agricultural producers. By reallocating current agricultural subsidies, Congress can feasibly correct the agricultural industry’s failure to adequately inform consumers.

Instructor Assessment Of Adult Cpr Skills: A Comparison Between Subjective And Objective Measures, Emily Evans Dec 2018

Instructor Assessment Of Adult Cpr Skills: A Comparison Between Subjective And Objective Measures, Emily Evans

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Providing accurate feedback is an important component of teaching CPR skills. An important part of providing accurate feedback is being able to accurately assess specific skills. In a cross- sectional experimental design, 33 CPR instructors were recruited to assess six 2-minute pre- recorded videos of 2-person CPR skills. The subjective assessment measures were compared to the objective manikin measures from a Laerdal Resusci-Anne® QCPR manikin. Results indicated statistically significant differences between the subjective and objective measures in all skills assessed (chest compression rate, chest compression depth, chest recoil, hand placement, ventilation volume, and total cycles). Instructor teaching experience (in years …

An Evaluation Of The Use Of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (Modis)-Derived Aerosol Optical Depth To Estimate Ground Level Pm2.5 In Alaska, Alyson Marie Mathers Dec 2018

An Evaluation Of The Use Of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (Modis)-Derived Aerosol Optical Depth To Estimate Ground Level Pm2.5 In Alaska, Alyson Marie Mathers

Engineering

The air quality monitoring (AQM) network in Alaska is limited to major urban areas and national parks thus leaving a large proportion of the state unmonitored. To evaluate the use of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)-derived aerosol optical depth (AOD) to predict ground-level PM2.5 concentrations and thereby increase the spatial coverage of the AQM network in Alaska, MODIS AOD was first validated against ground-based measurements of AOD in Utqiagvik and Bonanza Creek Alaska. MODIS AOD from 2000 to 2014 was obtained from MODIS collection 6 using the dark target land and ocean algorithms between the months of April and October. …

Bounded Rationality, Paternalism, And Trademark Law, Stacey Dogan Dec 2018

Bounded Rationality, Paternalism, And Trademark Law, Stacey Dogan

Faculty Scholarship

We don’t need behavioral economics to understand that trade marks can shape consumer preferences in ways that have little to do with objectively measurable differences in product quality. Scholars, judges, economists, and policymakers have long recognized the tendency of strong marks to skew consumer decisions. The concern lies not only in price effects but with the allocative effects of encouraging investment in persuasive advertising, rather than product innovation or similar “productive” pursuits. While informative advertising can benefit consumers, advertising that creates artificial brand-based differences between otherwise identical products appears not only costly to consumers but also socially wasteful.

Regeneration And Expansion Of Quercus Tomentella (Island Oak) Groves On Santa Rosa Island, Jay Woolsey, Cause Hanna, Kathryn Mceachern, Sean Anderson, Brett D. Hartman Dec 2018

Regeneration And Expansion Of Quercus Tomentella (Island Oak) Groves On Santa Rosa Island, Jay Woolsey, Cause Hanna, Kathryn Mceachern, Sean Anderson, Brett D. Hartman

Western North American Naturalist

Quercus tomentella (island oak) is an endemic species that plays a key functional role in Channel Island ecosystems. Growing in groves on highland ridges, Q. tomentella captures fog and increases water inputs, stabilizes soils, and provides habitat for flora and fauna. This cloud forest system has been impacted by a long history of ranching, and restoration efforts are underway that include erosion control, leaf litter capture, fog capture, and reforestation. To inform retoration efforts, we explored tree regeneration and the potential for Q. tomentella grove expansion on Santa Rosa Island. We delineated current and historic groves at Black Mountain by …

Fine Scale Modeling To Estimate Human Exposures To Air Pollution, Fatema Parvez Dec 2018

Fine Scale Modeling To Estimate Human Exposures To Air Pollution, Fatema Parvez

Doctoral Dissertations

Traffic related air pollution is considered one of the major challenges for a large number of urban population. The rapid growth of the world’s motor-vehicle fleet due to population growth and economic improvement causes a significant negative impact on public health. As pollutants from roadway emission sources reach background concentration levels within a few hundred meters from the source, it is very challenging to implement a model that captures this behavior. Currently available air quality modeling approaches can compute the source specific pollutant fate on either a regional or a local scale but still lack effective ways to estimate the …

The Effects Of Inhibiting Pi3k On Tumor Suppressor Gene P53 And Cell Proliferation, Kelsi Peters Dec 2018

The Effects Of Inhibiting Pi3k On Tumor Suppressor Gene P53 And Cell Proliferation, Kelsi Peters

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

When the cell surface molecule, Human EGF Receptor (HER2), is overexpressed, the cell can become cancerous. MDA-MB-453 is an established breast cancer cell line made cancerous by HER2 overexpression. This mutation that causes HER2 overexpression affects the cell signaling pathway of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K), Akt, MDM2, and p53. We predicted that PI3K would be inhibited with the compound, LY294002, sending signals for Akt and MDM2 to be deactivated in MDA-MB-453 cells. Deactivated MDM2 signals for p53 to be activated. P53 is a tumor suppressor protein that exists in low quantities in normal cells, but when damage …

The Plot Thickens : Illustrated Victorian Serial Fiction From Dickens To Du Maurier, Mary Elizabeth Leighton, Lisa Surridge Dec 2018

The Plot Thickens : Illustrated Victorian Serial Fiction From Dickens To Du Maurier, Mary Elizabeth Leighton, Lisa Surridge

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

In the early 1800s, books were largely unillustrated. By the 1830s and 1840s, however, innovations in wood- and steel-engraving techniques changed how Victorian readers consumed and conceptualized fiction. A new type of novel was born, often published in serial form, one that melded text and image as partners in meaning-making.

These illustrated serial novels offered Victorians a reading experience that was both verbal and visual, based on complex effects of flash-forward and flashback as the placement of illustrations revealed or recalled significant story elements. Victorians’ experience of what are now canonical novels thus differed markedly from that of modern readers, …

Mismatch Between Older Adults’ Expectation And Smartphone User Interface, Chui Yin Wong, Rahimah Ibrahim, Tengku Aizan Hamid, Evi Indriasari Mansor

Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)

Smartphones have become ubiquitous communication tools for everybody, including older adults to stay connected with their family and access to information. However, mobile operators and developers mainly target the youngster cohort in mobile industry. With the rising ageing population, smartphone user interface and some mobile apps are not designed to cater the needs of older adults. This could hinder them from fully utilizing the smartphone functions and its services. A mobile-user interaction study using mixed-methods (questionnaire, interview and observation) was conducted to examine usability and user interface design issues of smartphone and mobile apps among 80 older adults in Malaysia. …

Word Sense Disambiguation Using Fuzzy Semantic-Based String Similarity Model, Amir Abd-Rashid, Shuzlina Abdul-Rahman, Nor Nadiah Yusof, Azlinah Mohamed

Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)

Sentences are the language of human communication. This communication medium is so fluid that words and meaning can have many interpretations by readers. Besides, a document that consists of thousands of sentences would be tough for the reader to understand the content. In this case, computer power is required to analyse the gigantic batch size of the text. However, there are several arguments that actively discuss regarding the output generated by a computer toward the meaning of the passage in terms of accuracy. One of the reasons for this issue is the existing of the ambiguous word with multiple meanings …

Assessing Effects Of Climate Change On Access To Ecosystem Services In Rural Alaska, Helen S. Cold Dec 2018

Assessing Effects Of Climate Change On Access To Ecosystem Services In Rural Alaska, Helen S. Cold

Biological Sciences

Across the planet, climate change is altering the way human societies interact with the environment. Amplified climate change at high latitudes is significantly altering the structure and function of ecosystems, creating challenges and necessitating adaptation by societies in the region that depend on local ecosystem services for their livelihoods. Rural communities in Interior Alaska rely on plants and animals for food, clothing, fuel and shelter. Previous research suggests that climate-induced changes in environmental conditions are challenging the abilities of rural residents to travel across the land and access local resources, but detailed information on the nature and effect of specific …

Morphological And Phenological Responses Of Butterflies To Seasonal Temperature Increase In Alaska, Kathryn Margaret Daly Dec 2018

Morphological And Phenological Responses Of Butterflies To Seasonal Temperature Increase In Alaska, Kathryn Margaret Daly

Biological Sciences

Climate is changing rapidly at high latitudes, and the responses of insects provide early indications of the impacts these changes have on biota. Butterflies (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) are among the best-known Subarctic and Arctic insects, and research in Greenland has revealed significant declines in butterfly body sizes along with advances in the timing of their first flights in spring. These changes are ecologically significant because smaller body sizes can lead to reduced fecundity in butterflies, and earlier adult emergence can have detrimental effects across trophic levels because Lepidoptera are an important food resource for birds and mammals. The primary goal of …

Studies Assessing Insulin Signaling Dependent Neuronal Morphology And Novel Animal Sorting Methods In A C. Elegans Model, Skyler C. Hunter

Biological Sciences

The purpose of this work is two-part. The primary goal of this thesis is to identify a list of significant target insulin-like peptides (ILPs) that influence the maintenance of neuronal morphology in an aged animal model of Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) and determine whether or not morphological changes have bearing on neuronal function. The second goal is to address and devise a solution for a common laboratory difficulty encountered within the research community, difficulty maintaining large age-synchronous populations of the model organism, C. elegans. Chapter 1 discusses the importance of insulin signaling and how it pertains to the morphology of …

Dependence Of Aspen Stands On A Subsurface Water Subsidy: Implications For Climate Change Impacts, D. M. Love, M. D. Venturas, J. S. Sperry, P. D. Brooks, Joseph L. Pettit, Y. Wang, W. R.L. Anderegg, X. Tai, D. S. Mackay

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

The reliance of 10 Utah (USA) aspen forests on direct infiltration of growing season rain versus an additional subsurface water subsidy was determined from a trait‐ and process‐based model of stomatal control. The model simulated the relationship between water supply to the root zone versus canopy transpiration and assimilation over a growing season. Canopy flux thresholds were identified that distinguished nonstressed, stressed, and dying stands. We found growing season rain and local soil moisture were insufficient for the survival of 5 of 10 stands. Six stands required a substantial subsidy (31–80% of potential seasonal transpiration) to avoid water stress and …
