Fly Control To Prevent Diarrhoea In Children, Jai K. Das, Yousaf Bashir Hadi, Rehana Salam, Mehar Hoda, Zohra S. Lassi, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Background:
Diarrhoeal disease accounts for millions of child deaths every year. Although the role of flies as vectors of infectious diarrhoea has been established, fly control is not often mentioned as an approach to decrease childhood diarrhoea. Theoretically, fly control for decreasing diarrhoea incidence can be achieved by intervening at four different levels: reduction or elimination of fly breeding sites; reduction of sources that attract houseflies; prevention of contact between flies and disease-causing organisms; and protection of people, food, and food utensils from contact with flies.
Objectives:
To assess the impact of various housefly control measures on the incidence of …

A Survivor’S Tale: Mcdonnell Douglas In A Post-Nassar World, Joss Teal Dec 2018

A Survivor’S Tale: Mcdonnell Douglas In A Post-Nassar World, Joss Teal

San Diego Law Review

This Comment examines the circuit split that has developed over the application of but-for causation in Title VII retaliation claims. Following a brief look into the traditional requirements of a Title VII retaliation plaintiff, Part II assesses the 2013 Supreme Court holding that established but-for causation as the required causation standard and surveys courts of appeal holdings in its wake. After examining policy considerations and arguments put forward for each position in Part III, this Comment clarifies the misperception that the McDonnell Douglas framework necessarily proves but-for causation. In Part IV, this Comment proposes that the Supreme Court should rectify …

Reindeer, Dogs, And Horses Among The Tozhu Reindeer Herder-Hunters In The Siberian Taiga, Tayana Arakchaa Dec 2018

Reindeer, Dogs, And Horses Among The Tozhu Reindeer Herder-Hunters In The Siberian Taiga, Tayana Arakchaa

Anthropology

Anthropological studies have typically represented reindeer as the uniquely key domesticated animal species for Siberian people. For Tozhu reindeer herder-hunters, however, such a perspective ignores the important roles of dogs and horses. These species are equally vital and interdependent partners of daily life in the mountainous areas of Tuva where Tozhu people live. Each animal comes with specific characteristics, challenges and benefits that necessitate a multispecies perspective--the reindeer-dog-horse triad of Tozhu hunting and reindeer herding economies. This research completes the picture of how taiga-dwelling Tozhu and the three important animal species co-exist together. It seeks to portray: 1) how the …

A Targeted Approach To High-Volume Fly Ash Concrete Pavement (Phase I), Sen Du, Xianming Shi Dec 2018

A Targeted Approach To High-Volume Fly Ash Concrete Pavement (Phase I), Sen Du, Xianming Shi

CESTiCC Project Reports

Unlike the conventional method of admixing nanomaterials directly in fresh concrete mixture, a more targeted approach was explored. Specifically, nanomaterials were used to improve the interface between coarse aggregate and cement paste, by coating the coarse aggregate with cement paste that contained graphene oxide or nanosilica. Using coated coarse aggregates, the mechanical and transport properties of high-volume fly ash (HVFA) concrete were tested to evaluate the effect of nanomaterial coating on the interface transition zone of concrete. The compressive and splitting strengths of HVFA concrete at 3, 7, 14, and 28 days and the water sorptivity and chloride migration coefficient …

In Phase I of this project, graphene oxide (GO)-modified pervious concrete was developed using coal fly ash as the sole binder. The primary objectives of Phase II of this project were (1) to evaluate the stormwater infiltration capacity of GO-modified fly ash pervious concrete; (2) to evaluate the durability performance of GO-modified fly ash pervious concrete using freeze/thaw and salt resistance testing methods; and (3) to use advanced analytical tools to fully characterize the GO-modified fly ash binder. Test results indicate different degrees of reduction in concentrations of possible pollutants in stormwater—copper, zinc, sulphate, chloride, ammonia, nitrate, and total phosphate. …

Dui Courts: The Need For Standardized Dui Court Evaluations, Howard Cameron Dec 2018

Dui Courts: The Need For Standardized Dui Court Evaluations, Howard Cameron

Justice

There have been numerous evaluations of driving under the influence (DUI) treatment courts. The evaluation process and tools vary widely. This research project reviewed seven individual courts' evaluations, including process evaluations and outcome evaluations to determine the strength of each court's evaluation. The research goal was to better understand how these courts are evaluated, the strength of those evaluation processes, and to determine what, if any, changes can and should be made to strengthen them. Presently, there are not any standardized evaluations tools for DUI treatment courts. This research concludes that evaluations should be standardized and such standardization will allow …

Testing Multispecies Coalescent Simulators With Summary Statistics, Hector Daniel BañOs Cervantes Dec 2018

Testing Multispecies Coalescent Simulators With Summary Statistics, Hector Daniel BañOs Cervantes

Mathematics and Statistics

The Multispecies coalescent model (MSC) is increasingly used in phylogenetics to describe the formation of gene trees (depicting the direct ancestral relationships of sampled lineages) within species trees (depicting the branching of species from their common ancestor). A number of MSC simulators have been implemented, and these are often used to test inference methods built on the model. However, it is not clear from the literature that these simulators are always adequately tested. In this project, we formulated tools for testing these simulators and use them to show that of four well-known coalescent simulators, Mesquite, Hybrid-Lambda, SimPhy, and Phybase, only …

Analysis Of Cation-Treated Clay Microstructure Using Zeta Potential And X-Ray Diffraction, Rui Guo Dec 2018

Analysis Of Cation-Treated Clay Microstructure Using Zeta Potential And X-Ray Diffraction, Rui Guo

Engineering

Unfrozen water within cation-treated, fine-grained frozen soils is a key element in cold regions engineering, and is heavily influenced by the surface charge of the soil's clay component. This study investigated the effects of the surface charge of cation-treated clay soils by measuring the zeta potential as a function of temperature, and measuring changes in the micro-structure of frozen cation-treated clays using the x-ray diffraction (XRD) method. I tested five treatments (untreated, and Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, Na⁺, and K⁺ treatments) of six soils (montmorillonite, kaolinite, illite, illite-smectite, chlorite, and Copper River soil). The zeta potential demonstrated a negative relationship with temperature …

Improving Ultimate Recovery In The Granite Point Field Tyonek C Sands, Thomas L. Nenahlo

Engineering

The objective of this research is to determine how the ultimate recovery of the Granite Point field can be improved. An understanding of the depositional setting, structure, stratigraphy, reservoir rock properties, reservoir fluids, aquifer, and development history of the Granite Point field was compiled. This was then leveraged to provide recommendations on how the ultimate recovery can be improved. The Granite Point field Tyonek C sands are located on an anticline structure at 8,000' to 11,000' SSTVD within the offshore Cook Inlet basin. These sands were deposited in a fluvial environment with the source material provided by the Alaska Range …

Studying Auroral Microphysics Using Multiple Optically Tracked Rocket Sub-Payloads, Joshua M. Vann Dec 2018

Studying Auroral Microphysics Using Multiple Optically Tracked Rocket Sub-Payloads, Joshua M. Vann

Physics

There is insufficient knowledge of scale length parameters associated with ionospheric plasma structures. Using a novel technique combining rocket-based instrument data with ground-based optical and instrumental data measurements, ISINGLASS attempts to determine the spatial scale lengths over which parameter differences in auroral arcs present in the upper ionosphere. Determination of such scale lengths has the propensity to strengthen preexisting models of magnetosphere-ionosphere interactions. While analysis is not complete and the extent of such scale lengths is still unknown, after completion of the experiment phase of the mission, differences in measurements have been found that cannot be accounted for through experimental …

A Farmers Guide To Evaluate Soil Health Using Physical, Chemical, And Biological Indicators On An Agricultural Field In Alaska, Cory J. Cole Dec 2018

A Farmers Guide To Evaluate Soil Health Using Physical, Chemical, And Biological Indicators On An Agricultural Field In Alaska, Cory J. Cole

Natural Resources

Farmers across Alaska face many challenges. These challenges include climate extremes, wind and water erosion, weed pressure, crop pests, and nutrient-poor soils. Cover crops, crop rotation, crop residue, and tillage management are common conservation practices used to address soil related resource concerns. Research in the continental United States has shown that these soil conservation practices improve soil health. Resource managers are trying to determine the usefulness of soil health indicators to assess conservation practices in Alaska. The objective of this project was to provide Alaskan farmers, conservation planners, and land managers with a background on soil health, soil health indicators, …

Psychology

Objective: Rural communities in Alaska face a long list of mental health disparities that are exacerbated by the other challenging factors inherent within the rural context. Rural Alaskan mental health care providers are faced with the tremendous task of providing clinically and culturally competent care to underserved and marginalized populations, with limited personal and professional resources, all while balancing the needs of the community, their own personal boundaries, and the pressure of remaining accountable to the larger system of professional ethics and guidelines. The aim of this study was to explore, identify, and understand from the perspective of rural Alaskan …

Assessment And Application Of Dna Metabarcoding For Characterizing Arctic Shorebird Chick Diets, Danielle Elizabeth Gerik Dec 2018

Assessment And Application Of Dna Metabarcoding For Characterizing Arctic Shorebird Chick Diets, Danielle Elizabeth Gerik

Fisheries

Climate change in the Arctic is affecting the emergence timing of arthropods used as food by nesting shorebirds and their young. Characterizing the diets of shorebird young is a prerequisite to evaluate the potential for asynchrony to occur between the timing of arthropod emergence and when shorebird young hatch, an example of trophic mismatch. In this study, DNA metabarcoding was used to identify arthropod remains in feces collected from wild-caught Red Phalarope (Phalaropus fulicarius), Pectoral Sandpiper (Calidris melanotos), and Dunlin (Calidris alpina), young in Utqiaġvik, Alaska between 2014 and 2016. Arthropod specimens were collected at the field site to generate …

Navigating The Predator Gauntlet: Consumption Of Hatchery- And Wild-Born Juvenile Chum Salmon (Oncorhynchus Keta) By Common Nearshore Marine Fishes In Southeast Alaska, Douglas H. Duncan Dec 2018

Navigating The Predator Gauntlet: Consumption Of Hatchery- And Wild-Born Juvenile Chum Salmon (Oncorhynchus Keta) By Common Nearshore Marine Fishes In Southeast Alaska, Douglas H. Duncan

Fisheries

Juvenile chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) undergo extensive mortality at marine entry, a period which is believed to be a potential population bottleneck. Although this early mortality has been consistently observed, our understanding of the mechanisms responsible is limited. Furthermore, the implications of large-scale salmon hatchery releases for the ecology of juvenile chum salmon and their consumers is another important knowledge gap. To better understand the predation responses of abundant consumers to hatchery- and wild-born juvenile chum salmon, we examined the diets of Pacific staghorn sculpin (Leptocottus armatus) and Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma) near Juneau, Alaska, in 2016 and 2017. Chum …

Growth Of Juvenile Chilkat Lake Sockeye Salmon In Response To Density-Dependent And Environmental Factors, Jodi C. Neil Dec 2018

Growth Of Juvenile Chilkat Lake Sockeye Salmon In Response To Density-Dependent And Environmental Factors, Jodi C. Neil

Fisheries

Chilkat Lake, in northern Southeast Alaska, is home to a Sockeye Salmon Oncorhynchus nerka population that is an important component in local commercial, sport, and subsistence fisheries, and has been monitored since the late 1960s. The population began declining in the late 1980s, prompting fishery managers to evaluate the production potential of Chilkat Lake to determine if it could be a candidate for enhancement efforts such as fry stocking or lake fertilization. Sockeye Salmon fry were stocked into Chilkat Lake intermittently from 1989 to 2004 in both small- (<50,000) and large-scale (2.6-5.3 million) events. The purpose of this study was to determine whether stocking of fry resulted in decreased freshwater growth due to density-dependent processes. Fish scales from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's archived collection of adult Chilkat Lake Sockeye Salmon were measured and used as a proxy for fish growth. The objectives of this thesis were to 1) examine changes in juvenile Chilkat Lake Sockeye Salmon freshwater growth over time (1978-2012); 2) determine whether increased density of juvenile fry coupled with simultaneous climate events negatively affected freshwater growth of Chilkat Lake Sockeye Salmon; and 3) determine whether increased density of juvenile fry affected age at smoltification of Chilkat Lake Sockeye Salmon. We hypothesized that high fry density would slow growth and delay smoltification; however, these analyses produced variable results. We did not detect an effect of increased fry density on growth in the first year of fresh water, but found evidence for a subtle, negative relationship between fry density and second year freshwater growth of those fish that delayed migration. We also found that age at smoltification decreased with increasing fry density. Overall, the model results indicated that no factor or combination of factors related to stocking activity or climate consistently affected juvenile Sockeye Salmon scale growth, suggesting either unidentified, equally influential, or confounding mechanisms (e.g., high adult escapement and anomalous weather patterns).

Exploring The Potential Role Of Late Stage Predation And Chinook Salmon Age Structure, Kaitlyn A. Manishin Dec 2018

Exploring The Potential Role Of Late Stage Predation And Chinook Salmon Age Structure, Kaitlyn A. Manishin

Fisheries

Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) populations across the North Pacific have displayed a decrease in body size-at-return resulting from declines both in age- and body size-at-maturity. These changes have precipitated the loss of the oldest age classes in some populations and have occurred throughout the range of this species, suggesting a shared - yet currently unknown - driver in the common marine environment. A hypothesis for the cause of these changes is intense and/or selective predation marine mortality after the first winter in the ocean, potentially from predators selectively removing relatively large sub-adult Chinook salmon. Here I consider the question: under …

The Seasonal Dynamics Of Coastal Arctic Lagoons In Northwest Alaska, Marguerite Tibbles Dec 2018

The Seasonal Dynamics Of Coastal Arctic Lagoons In Northwest Alaska, Marguerite Tibbles

Fisheries

Lagoons are zones of habitat transitions between freshwater and marine ecosystems, providing safe and productive feeding habitats for whitefishes in Northwest Alaska, important to subsistence users in the region. However, many important lagoon processes are not understood. Therefore, the goal of this thesis was to gain a baseline understanding of two important seasonal processes of lagoons in Northwest Alaska. First, I attempted to identify environmental processes correlated with Arctic lagoon breaching for three indicator lagoons that represent a range of environmental characteristics using generalized linear models (GLM) in an information theoretic approach and model averaging. Second, I developed a habitat …

Impacts Of A Top Predator (Esox Lucius) On Salmonids In Southcentral Alaska: Genetics, Connectivity, And Vulnerability, Chase S. Jalbert Dec 2018

Impacts Of A Top Predator (Esox Lucius) On Salmonids In Southcentral Alaska: Genetics, Connectivity, And Vulnerability, Chase S. Jalbert

Fisheries

Worldwide invasion and range expansion of northern pike (pike; Esox lucius) have been linked to the decline of native fishes and new techniques are needed to assess the effects of invasion over broad geographic scales. In Alaska, pike are native north and west of the Alaska Mountain Range but were introduced into Southcentral Alaska in the 1950s and again in the 1970s. To investigate the history of the invasion into Southcentral Alaska, I identified 7,889 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from three native and seven introduced populations in Alaska and examined genetic diversity, structure, and affinities of native and invasive pike. …

Factors Influencing Chinook Salmon Spawning Distribution In The Togiak River, Alaska, Stephanie L. Meggers Dec 2018

Factors Influencing Chinook Salmon Spawning Distribution In The Togiak River, Alaska, Stephanie L. Meggers

Fisheries

Salmonids are heavily dependent on specific habitat characteristics for survival, yet few studies in Alaska have examined the relationship between habitat and spawning distribution, using remote sensing approaches. To better understand the relationship between Chinook Salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha spawning distribution and environmental variables like habitat type (e.g., run, riffle, pool), temperature, and proximity to channel islands, optical and thermal imagery were collected on the Togiak and Ongivinuk rivers in southwest Alaska. Object-based image analysis was used to classify and quantify habitat types, while thermal characteristics and the proximity of spawning locations to channel islands were determined in a GIS framework. …
