100 Sideways Miles, Meagan Andrus

Children's Book and Media Review

Finn Easton is a sixteen-year-old epileptic who sometimes believes that he is merely a character in his father's cult-classic science fiction novel. The parallels between his life one of the characters are remarkable, but it sort of freaks Finn out that he could merely exist within the pages of a book. Beyond that, he has to go through high school as the kid with epilepsy who just might have a seizure at any moment. He therefore has one friend only, Cade Hernandez, a back-talking, tobacco-chewing, lovable yet rowdy guy. The summer before Finn's junior year, he and Cade wonder at …

Method For Filtering Displayed Content Based On Occupants, Scott Randolph, Bradley Stenning, Steve Steve Dec 2018

Method For Filtering Displayed Content Based On Occupants, Scott Randolph, Bradley Stenning, Steve Steve

Defensive Publications Series

This publication describes an operating system (OS) that re-defines a user as a sum of all occupants in a shared space, and not merely as a single individual who has signed into a shared device. To identify the occupants of a space, the OS uses objective markers, such as: facial recognition, radar signature, biometric sensors, media address control identification (MAC ID), voice recognition, various sensors, radio-frequency identification (RFID), or other Internet-of-Things (IoT) data. Then, the OS filters out the displayed content on the shared device based on a level of trust amongst the occupants and a level of sensitivity. To …

Automating Last-Mile Power Connection Discovery In Datacenters, N/A Dec 2018

Automating Last-Mile Power Connection Discovery In Datacenters, N/A

Defensive Publications Series

Up-to-date records of last mile power connection information in a datacenter are useful, e.g., to enable data center engineers to reason about the power-network dependency of machines; to monitor aggregate power consumed by a group of machines; etc. Such records are typically obtained manually, e.g., by associating barcodes with both distribution equipment (junction boxes) and power loads (racks) and scanning the barcodes to establish distribution-to-load mapping. The present manual methods of power-connection discovery are labor-intensive.

This disclosure describes automated discovery of last-mile power connection information in a datacenter. Power cables (whips) that connect racks to junction boxes are made available …

Pre-Activity Assessment Using The Usfs Soil Disturbance Protocol, Mark Twain National Forest, Se Missouri: Year 1 Data Report, Marc R. Owen, Hanna R. Adams, Robert T. Pavlowsky

OEWRI Technical Reports

The United States Forest Service (USFS) has contracted the Ozarks Environmental and Water Resources Institute (OEWRI) to perform the USFS Forest Soil Disturbance Monitoring Protocol (FSDMP) within the Mark Twain National Forest (MTNF) in southern Missouri. The FSDMP is a national monitoring program designed to assess the extent of ground disturbance during timber harvest activity and to quantify changes to the landscape that may affect long-term sustainability of the site (Page-Dumroese et al. 20091). This is the first time this type of monitoring has been performed within the MTNF and results of this study will be used to refine the …

Rhodes, Daniel Rodriguez, Ikttesh Chahal, David A. Stanton, Joseph Bohlen, Mary Davis, Aniello M. Infante, Hannah Hazard-Jenkins, David J. Klinke, Elena N. Pugacheva, Emidio E. Pistilli

Clinical and Translational Science Institute

Purpose: This study tested the hypothesis that a patient-derived orthotopic xenograft (PDOX) model would recapitulate the common clinical phenomenon of breast cancer–induced skeletal muscle (SkM) fatigue in the absence of muscle wasting. This study additionally sought to identify drivers of this condition to facilitate the development of therapeutic agents for patients with breast cancer experiencing muscle fatigue. Experimental Design: Eight female BC-PDOX–bearing mice were produced via transplantation of tumor tissue from 8 female patients with breast cancer. Individual hind limb muscles from BC-PDOX mice were isolated at euthanasia for RNA-sequencing, gene and protein analyses, and an ex vivo muscle contraction …

Narrating The Collapse: The Use And Limits Of A Phenomenology Of Depression, James Bodington Dec 2018

Narrating The Collapse: The Use And Limits Of A Phenomenology Of Depression, James Bodington

Philosophy ETDs

This project is an attempt to apply certain of the insights of phenomenological philosophy to the analysis of the lived experience of depression. I argue that the centering of experience in phenomenology can, and should, motivate its use in the context of the philosophical analysis of mental health, and may contribute to therapeutic aims as well. While this has been remarked upon in recent and current literature, this project motivates, engages with, augments, and challenges existing philosophical approaches to mental health and depression. I begin by surveying the existing literature, and bringing the critiques of classical phenomenology suggested by Guenther’s …
