Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers
In Trypanosoma brucei and related kinetoplastid parasites, transcription of protein coding genes is largely unregulated. Rather, mRNA binding proteins, which impact processes such as transcript stability and translation efficiency, are the predominant regulators of gene expression. Arginine methylation is a posttranslational modification that preferentially targets RNA binding proteins and is, therefore, likely to have a substantial impact on T. brucei biology. The data presented here demonstrate that cells depleted of T. brucei PRMT1 (TbPRMT1), a major type I protein arginine methyltransferase, exhibit decreased virulence in an animal model. To understand the basis of this phenotype, quantitative global proteomics was employed …

Proteomic Profile Of Carbonylated Proteins Screen Regulation Of Apoptosis Via Camk Signaling In Response To Regular Aerobic Exercise, Wenfeng Liu, Li Li, Heyu Kuang, Yan Xia, Zhiyuan Wang, Shaopeng Liu, Dazhong Yin
Health Sciences & Kinesiology: Faculty Publications
To research carbonylated proteins and screen molecular targets in the rat striatum on regular aerobic exercise, male SpragueDawley rats (13 months old, n = 24) were randomly divided into middle-aged sedentary control (M-SED) and aerobic exercise (M-EX) groups (n = 12 each). Maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max) gradually increased from 50%–55% to 65%–70% for a total of 10 weeks. A total of 36 carbonylated proteins with modifed oxidative sites were identifed by Electrospray IonizationQuadrupole-Time of Flight-Mass Spectrometer (ESI-Q-TOF-MS), including 17 carbonylated proteins unique to the M-SED group, calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase type II subunit beta (CaMKII), and heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein A2/B1 (Hnrnpa2b1), …

Numerical Simulations Of Flow Past A Triangular Airfoil And In A Sweeping Jet Actuator Using Different Turbulence Models, Han Yang
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
The goal of this research is to perform 2D turbulent flow simulations to predict the flow past a triangular airfoil used for a Mars air vehicle and in a sweeping jet actuator used for active flow control. Simulations are performed using the commercial CFD software ANSYS Fluent.
The thesis consists of two parts. The first part of the thesis deals with the CFD simulations of a triangular airfoil in low-Reynolds-number compressible flow. This airfoil is one of the candidates for propeller blades on a possible future Martian air vehicle design. The aerodynamics and flow physics of the triangular airfoil is …

This paper is therefore timely as it ascertained how all libraries can help to meet up with …
Noise And Gain Characterization Of Interband Cascade Infrared Photodetectors, Eli A. Garduño
Noise And Gain Characterization Of Interband Cascade Infrared Photodetectors, Eli A. Garduño
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Infrared (IR) detectors are an enabling technology for a broad and growing list of applications including gas detection, night vision, and space-based missile warning. There are ongoing efforts in IR detector research to explore the potential of new material systems and energy band structures in addition to continuously improving their sensitivity through increasing their quantum efficiency and lowering their dark current and noise. This dissertation examines an emerging class of IR detectors known as Interband Cascade Infrared Photodetectors (ICIPs).
ICIPs contain multiple regions to facilitate the collection of photogenerated electrons and to limit unwanted dark current. Theory regarding their performance …

Agility And Resilience As Antecedents Of Supply Chain Performance Under Moderating Effects Of Organizational Culture Within Humanitarian Setting: A Dynamic Capability View, N Altay, A Gunasekaran, R Dubey, Sj Childe
Plymouth Business School
This study examines the effects of supply chain agility and supply chain resilience on performance under the moderating effect of organizational culture. We have used the dynamic capability view to conceptualize our theoretical models for different phases of humanitarian supply chain (pre-disaster and post-disaster phases). These phases do not have clear boundaries, but overlap chronologically, as well as in terms of ongoing activities. We used partial least squares (PLS) to examine our proposed research hypotheses using 335 responses gathered from organizations in India using survey based questionnaires designed for a single respondent. The results from our data suggest that SCAG …

Rapid Detection Of Extra-Intestinal Pathogenic Escherichia Coli Multi-Locus Sequence Type 127 Using A Specific Pcr Assay., Rw O'Hara, Peter J. Jenks, Matthew Emery, Mathew Upton
School of Biomedical Sciences
PURPOSE: Members of the ST127 uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) clone have a high virulence potential and are also highly virulent in insect infection models. However, strains of this lineage are reported in relatively low numbers in many studies. ST127 strains are also usually widely susceptible to antibiotics and, consequently, their true prevalence may be under-recognized as they will be eradicated during empirical therapy. A genuine concern is the possibility that members of this highly virulent lineage will acquire resistance, leading to a more serious threat. The aim of this study was to design and validate a PCR assay specific to …

School of Health Professions
PURPOSE:To measure longitudinal chromatic aberration (LCA) of various intraocular lenses (IOLs) and to assess LCA effects on polychromatic image quality with a focus on multifocal IOL designs. METHODS:The LCA values of four multifocal IOL models (three diffractive models: AT LARA 829MP and AT LISA 809M [both from Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Jena, Germany] and Restor SN6AD1 [Alcon Laboratories, Inc., Fort Worth, TX] and one refractive model [Mini Well Ready; SIFI Medtech, Sant'Antonio, Italy]) were compared with that of their monofocal counterparts. Optical properties were assessed using an optical bench device with spectral filters. LCA was calculated as a difference of …

Operations Management Presentations
As a management consultant, over the course of more than 40 years, I have facilitated more than 1500 workshops, seminars, and decision conferences. But when I think back on the times I was a college professor at West Point in the 70s, I often found myself in a position where in addition to teaching, I had to bring together and integrate the needs of very diverse groups of people. Typically, there was time pressure, the stakes were high, and the objectives of the participants conflicted. As an assistant professor, I had no real decision-making authority, but I could help the …

Matter Dis//Assembled: Revealing The Economies And Ecologies Of Aluminum, Noah Anderson
Architecture Thesis Prep
This project seeks to understand matter through the environments it creates. These environments, created through production, end-use, and disposal, extend to the scale of the world, the territory and the product. In a globalized world, the separate environments of a single material are highly external, and while we may know where a material comes from, the consequences of its extraction and manufacture are out-of-site, out-of-mind. This externalization is evident for Aluminum, which has a diverse and often contradictory range of environments.

Method For Filtering Displayed Content Based On Occupants, Scott Randolph, Bradley Stenning, Steve Paik
Defensive Publications Series
This publication describes an operating system (OS) that re-defines a user as a sum of all occupants in a shared space, and not merely as a single individual who has signed into a shared device. To identify the occupants of a space, the OS uses objective markers, such as: facial recognition, radar signature, biometric sensors, media address control identification (MAC ID), voice recognition, various sensors, radio-frequency identification (RFID), or other Internet-of-Things (IoT) data. Then, the OS filters out the displayed content on the shared device based on a level of trust amongst the occupants and a level of sensitivity. To …

Determining Breakpoints In Media Content, Migle Padegimaite, Sammy El Ghazzal
Defensive Publications Series
Systems and methods for determining breakpoints in media content via a machine learning architecture by accounting for the context of the media content, and for placing separate pieces of additional content into the breakpoints, are described. The machine learning architecture determines the number of pieces of additional content to insert into the media content, divides the media content into a number of scenes and tags each scene with appropriate identifiers based on comparison to reference content, identifies break points at the end of each scene, identifies which break point to insert pieces of additional content into, and then inserts the …

Revision Of The Central Asian Scorpion Genus Anomalobuthus Kraepelin, 1900, With Descriptions Of Three New Species And A Generic Synonymy (Scorpiones: Buthidae), Rolando Teruel, František Kovařík, Victor Fet
Euscorpius
We revise the Central Asian endemic genus Anomalobuthus Kraepelin, 1900, which was considered monotypic for more than 100 years until the recent addition of a second species from Iran (Teruel et al., 2014). We redefine the generic diagnosis of Anomalobuthus and reveal that it is composed of no less than six species, three of which are described as new: A. krivochatskyi, sp. n. (central Uzbekistan and extreme southern Kazakhstan), A. lowei, sp. n. (southeastern Kazakhstan), and A. pavlovskyi, sp. n. (south-central Kazakhstan and extreme northern Turkmenistan). The monotypic genus Psammobuthus Birula, 1911 (described from the Ferghana Valley …
