Preparing For The House Of God: Nepali Muslim Narratives Of The Hajj, Megan Adamson Sijapati
Preparing For The House Of God: Nepali Muslim Narratives Of The Hajj, Megan Adamson Sijapati
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
This essay focuses on first-person narratives from Nepali Muslims directly before and after their journeys from Kathmandu to Mecca, for the Hajj pilgrimage, in 2005-2006, collected and translated by the author. To date, studies and public representations of Muslims in Nepal in the period of Nepal’s long transition to secularism have focused predominantly on the population’s mobilization of religious identity and its religio-political aspirations, productions, and experiences that help to constitute it as a collective. These representations have been key in affirming Muslims’ rights as a minority in a newly secular federal republic of immense ethnic and religious diversity and …
Interacting With The 'Himalayan Ummah'. The Case Of Xidaotang, A Chinese Muslim Community From Lintan, Marie-Paule Hille
Interacting With The 'Himalayan Ummah'. The Case Of Xidaotang, A Chinese Muslim Community From Lintan, Marie-Paule Hille
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
This short essay discusses whether Xidaotang, a Chinese Muslim community, may be considered as belonging to the ‘Himalayan ummah’. Historically and until today, especially via trade, this community has been in close contact with the Himalayan region, understood as the mountainous zone of the Tibetan Plateau. By analyzing these trading interactions and the sociability they induce, it is possible to investigate to what extent Xidaotang members, with their own cultural background, religious practices and social experiences, have contributed to diversify the Islamic landscape in the Himalayan region, to which Amdo belongs.
Perspectives From The Field: Interviews With The Alima Of Ladakh, Jacqueline H. Fewkes
Perspectives From The Field: Interviews With The Alima Of Ladakh, Jacqueline H. Fewkes
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
This article is based on a series of interviews with a group of female Islamic scholars—alima—in Leh, Ladakh, who were the first four women from the region to receive a religious education in a formal madrassa (religious school). The women interviewed attended Jamiatus Salehat, a Deobandi religious boarding school located in Malageon Maharashtra (India), in the late 1980s. They graduated in 1991, returning to Ladakh to teach religion in the area. Today, these four women conduct public religious teachings for women in both Leh and Nubra valleys, and educate their family members about Islam as well. Segments of interviews conducted …
Sanctifying Minority Status In The Himalayan Ummah: Eid Al-Ghadeer Commemorations Among The Shia In Leh, Ladakh, Rohit Singh
Sanctifying Minority Status In The Himalayan Ummah: Eid Al-Ghadeer Commemorations Among The Shia In Leh, Ladakh, Rohit Singh
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
Drawing on ethnographic data, this article argues that the Shia in Leh, Ladakh employ religious ceremonies such as Eid al-Ghadeer to construct a sense of sacred community and a sanctified minority status within the Himalayan ummah. Religious discourses pertaining to minority-hood are central to how locals define and redefine themselves in the context of modernity in the Himalaya. Further, the ceremonial embrace of their minority status engenders discourses through which the Shia define their relationships to local Buddhists, local Sunnis, and broader global audiences.
The Social And Political Life Of A Relic: The Episode Of The Moi-E-Muqaddas Theft In Kashmir, 1963-1964, Idrees Kanth
The Social And Political Life Of A Relic: The Episode Of The Moi-E-Muqaddas Theft In Kashmir, 1963-1964, Idrees Kanth
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
The present article is focused on the relationship between a sacred object: the moi-e-muqaddas (the Prophet’s hair), housed in the Hazratbal shrine in Kashmir, and the Kashmiri Muslim community. The relic, which was stolen from the shrine on 27 December 1963, lead to a massive protest in the Kashmir valley and in other parts of the subcontinent, as people demanded its immediate recovery. Such thefts, which have been reported from across the world and across centuries, point to the extreme value of the relics, and the additional value they generate when they are stolen. Similarly, the Hazratbal relic theft became …
Reflections On The Post-Partition Period: Life Narratives Of Kashmiri Muslims In Contemporary Kashmir, Hafsa Kanjwal
Reflections On The Post-Partition Period: Life Narratives Of Kashmiri Muslims In Contemporary Kashmir, Hafsa Kanjwal
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
This article examines the political subjectivities of the first generation of post-Partition Kashmiri Muslims and presents their life narratives, both written and oral, as an important vantage point from which to understand shifts in Kashmiri Muslim society in the early post-Partition period. It also explores how these narratives are mediated by the respondent's present, a period after the militancy of the late eighties and nineties, but one in which there remains a mass uprising against Indian rule. This generation was important for a number of reasons. One, they witnessed the erosion of Kashmir’s autonomy and the promises of a plebiscite, …
Longing, Belonging And The Politics Of Naming: The Case Of The Khache, Anisa Bhutia
Longing, Belonging And The Politics Of Naming: The Case Of The Khache, Anisa Bhutia
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
In Tibet, Muslim traders and subsequent settlers from Kashmir were called Khache. Over the years, this term has come to acquire multiple significations. By engaging with the complex history of the group and their eventual return to Kashmir, this paper tries to uncover these very significations and how the idea of Khache represents a coming together of the Himalayan region (Tibet, Nepal, Kashmir, Darjeeling, Kalimpong). In their multi-layered notion of belonging, there is a strong sense of attachment to the imagined Tibet, reflecting a harmoniously lived life, while further complexities emerge from their repatriation to the ancestral land of Kashmir. …

Exploring Biomedical, Temporal, And Embodied Perspectives On The Timing Of Birth In Central Nepal, Jan Brunson, Suman Raj Tamrakar
Exploring Biomedical, Temporal, And Embodied Perspectives On The Timing Of Birth In Central Nepal, Jan Brunson, Suman Raj Tamrakar
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
As an ANHS Senior Fellow, I began to explore the standardization of time in obstetrics and its translation into everyday practice in Nepal by analyzing the various perspectives involved in determining a woman’s ideal time of delivery and a successful pregnancy: those of laypeople, doctors, and the scholars setting the guidelines. I observed Nepali biomedical practitioners’ negotiation of multiple understandings of parturition and their strategies for overcoming the challenges of pre- and post-term births.
How The Turtle Lost Its Shell: Sino-Tibetan Divination Manuals And Cultural Translation, Duncan J. Poupard
How The Turtle Lost Its Shell: Sino-Tibetan Divination Manuals And Cultural Translation, Duncan J. Poupard
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
This article is a pan-Himalayan story about how the turtle, as a cultural symbol within Sino-Tibetan divination iconography, came to more closely resemble a frog. It attempts a comparative analysis of Sino-Tibetan divination manuals, from Tibetan Dunhuang and Sinitic turtle divination to frog divination among the Naxi people of southwest China. It is claimed that divination turtles, upon entering the Himalayan foothills, are not just turtles, but become something else: a hybrid symbol transformed via cultural diffusion, from Han China to Tibet, and on to the Naxi of Yunnan. Where borders are crossed, there is translation. If we go beyond …
