The Great And Widening Divide: Political False Polarization And Its Consequences, Victoria Parker Jan 2018

The Great And Widening Divide: Political False Polarization And Its Consequences, Victoria Parker

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

American politics is becoming increasingly ideologically divided, and this cross-party hostility is reflected in pronounced partisan media outrage. However, while actual ideological polarization has indeed been rising, people estimate an ideological gap as being even larger than reality. We focus on whether part of this cross-party dislike can be explained by illusory perceptions of opposing party attitudes, attitudes the majority of the party members do not actually endorse. This illusory gap is referred to as false polarization; it is an interpersonal bias where a perceiver believes an opponent’s position is much farther away conceptually from where that opponent actually reports …

Exploring Lactate’S Role In Appetite Regulation Following High-Intensity Exercise, Luke W. Vanderheyden Jan 2018

Exploring Lactate’S Role In Appetite Regulation Following High-Intensity Exercise, Luke W. Vanderheyden

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Background: Intense-exercise has demonstrated an appetite suppressing effect post-exercise, however the involved mechanisms are not well understood. Lactate appears to be one viable mechanism as it has been found to bind to receptors on acylated ghrelin to inhibit release in cell culture. As sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) can alter lactate accumulation post-exercise without manipulating exercise-intensity, it presents an intriguing means to investigate lactate’s potential role. Purpose: To examine the role of lactate on appetite using NaHCO3 to alter blood lactate concentrations during high-intensity exercise. Methods: Eight recreationally active males completed two identical exercise sessions of low-volume high-intensity interval …

Attending To The Needs Of Inuit Inmates In Canada: Exploring The Perceptions Of Correctional Officers And Nunavut Officials, Kosta H. Barka Jan 2018

Attending To The Needs Of Inuit Inmates In Canada: Exploring The Perceptions Of Correctional Officers And Nunavut Officials, Kosta H. Barka

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

On March 10, 2015, the Office of the Auditor General of Canada released a performance audit concluding that the Nunavut Department of Justice did not adequately plan for and operate facilities to house inmates and did not adequately manage inmates in compliance with key rehabilitation and reintegration requirements. Given the room for improvement and my prior experience working with Nunavut Corrections, I embarked on a qualitative research project that sought to interview inmates in Nunavut Corrections about their perceptions of rehabilitation programs offered in Makigiarvik Healing Facility. Although university ethics approval was received for the research, I encountered resistance when …

Thirteen professionals were interviewed and feedback on these interviews was obtained utilizing focus groups. The findings include themes of relational assumptions, ecological values and principles, practice ecologies, and challenges and solutions to embracing ecological ethics. The findings suggest ways social work therapists can integrate ecological ethics into their everyday practice and point to changes that can be made in the profession more broadly, including changes …

Boundaries Of Fostering Happiness: Implicit Theories Of Happiness Predict Reactions To Positive Psychological Interventions, Esther Abel Jan 2018

Boundaries Of Fostering Happiness: Implicit Theories Of Happiness Predict Reactions To Positive Psychological Interventions, Esther Abel

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Positive Psychology Interventions (PPIs) are activities designed to facilitate greater psychological well-being through building cognitive and behavioural habits and skills (Seligman, Steen, Park, & Peterson, 2005). However, there may be individual differences that play a role in the effect PPIs have. The present research evaluated how individuals’ implicit theories regarding happiness as being controllable or not controllable (Howell, Passmore, & Holder, 2016) may predict their responses to and participation in PPIs, and in turn if those beliefs may be linked to the positive outcomes of the activities. In four online studies, the relationship between implicit theories of happiness and PPIs …

Girls’ Voices Of The Eighteenth Century: The Development Of A Genre For Young Female Readers, 1740-1800, Sarah Rangaratnam Jan 2018

Girls’ Voices Of The Eighteenth Century: The Development Of A Genre For Young Female Readers, 1740-1800, Sarah Rangaratnam

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Just as they do today, adolescent girls functioned as a cultural force in the eighteenth century, and it was commercially viable for authors and publishers to attract and sustain the attention of these teenaged readers. Girls’ Voices of the Eighteenth Century: The Development of a Genre for Young Female Readers, 1740-1800, examines how four female authors leveraged elements of fairy tales, romances and gothic fiction, and developed dialogue and humour in their texts, to reflect the interests and literary awareness of their target audience of adolescent girls. My study begins with an investigation of the legacy of early French fairy …

Criminal Heroes In Television: Exploring Moral Ambiguity In Law And Justice, Amy Henry Jan 2018

Criminal Heroes In Television: Exploring Moral Ambiguity In Law And Justice, Amy Henry

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Criminal justice is a popular theme in both news and entertainment media. How crime and justice issues are framed can actually legitimize corruption in a society. As research reveals the public’s dissatisfaction with the current failing retributive justice system, popular television series’ are confronting its flaws (Jerre, 2013). Utilizing a cultural criminological and social constructionist orientation, the following research examines anti-hero narratives in two highly rated crime-drama series, Breaking Bad and Sons of Anarchy. The main research questions examine: How the criminal protagonist or anti-hero is constructed in television crime procedurals? What claims about crime, criminality, law and justice …

Venus In The Trenches: The Treatment Of Venereal Disease In The Canadian Expeditionary Force, 1914-1919, Lyndsay Rosenthal

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This dissertation examines the treatment of venereal disease (VD) in the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF). The Canadians had one of the highest rates of infection during the war with 15.8 per cent of servicemen being diagnosed with VD. These figures generated concern among Canadian officials about the negative impact this could have on both public health and opinion. Overseas officials needed to develop policies and procedures to control the spread of the disease. When strict disciplinary measures did little to address the issue, the military experimented with more lenient ones rooted in science and medicine. Even with these measures in …

A Qualitative Study Of Families’ Experiences With Food Insecurity In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Elias Omer

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Ethiopia has shown considerable progress in alleviating the decades-long food insecurity problem, but still, in the context of urban areas such as Addis Ababa families continue to struggle to make ends meet. The overall purpose of this research is to explore families’ lived experiences and coping mechanisms with food insecurity. Framed with the narrative-empowerment theoretical framework this ethnographic study outlines the findings of semi-structured interviews and focus group discussion of 35 adults and children and observational notes. Participants were able to tell their perception, causes, and impacts of food insecurity in their families. They outlined the daily strategies they employ …

Arriving Somewhere, Not Here: Exploring And Mapping The Relationship Between Border Enforcement And Migration By Boat In The Central Mediterranean Sea, 2006 To 2015, Kira Williams

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The European Union (EU) implemented a maritime interdiction network using search and rescue which interdicted at least 462,813 “illegal migrants” in the Central Mediterranean Sea between 2006 and 2015. This involved 15 discrete, militarised and semi-secret maritime interdiction operations (MIOs) at a minimum cost of 126.9 million 2014 Euros. In this dissertation, I will explore and map these operations and their geographies between 2006 and 2015.

First, and based on the given existence of the European Patrols Network, I examine how this network came into being in the first place. This serves to show that the EU purposely created regular …

Sharing New Knowledge: A Review Of Dissemination Rates And Journal Emphasis In Career And Technical Education, Victor M. Hernandez-Gantes

Journal of Research in Technical Careers

In career and technical education (CTE), the role of academic journals has been critical in the dissemination of information as the field shifted from vocational education to CTE. To keep up with changes in the field, some journals have been renamed to reflect the new emphasis, other journals have retained their historical branding, and new journals have emerged. Thus, the purpose of this descriptive research was to review the typology and dissemination rates of journals currently available in CTE as a means to clarify their role and impact in the field. The review resulted in the identification of 17 journals …

Factors Impacting Former Ffa Members’ Decision To Discontinue Ffa After High School, Danielle Eve-Marie Sanok, Christopher T. Stripling, Carrie A. Stephens, Andrew P. Griffith Jan 2018

Factors Impacting Former Ffa Members’ Decision To Discontinue Ffa After High School, Danielle Eve-Marie Sanok, Christopher T. Stripling, Carrie A. Stephens, Andrew P. Griffith

Journal of Research in Technical Careers

The purpose of this study was to explore the factors impacting former National FFA Organization (FFA) members’ decision to discontinue FFA membership after high school. Data were collected using focus groups. Data indicated areas of improvement for how to retain membership on the alumni level within colleges and other local FFA Alumni chapters. Participants noted a lack of advertising from the FFA during their high school experience, and this may partially explain why FFA loses a majority of its membership after high school. Additionally, advisors played an influential role in deciding not to continue with FFA, and participants expressed a …

Defining Effective Teaching In Environmental Education: A Georgia 4-H Case Study, Lillian G. Meighan, Nicholas E. Fuhrman Jan 2018

Defining Effective Teaching In Environmental Education: A Georgia 4-H Case Study, Lillian G. Meighan, Nicholas E. Fuhrman

Journal of Research in Technical Careers

Many studies have examined the positive learning outcomes of environmental education (EE), yet few have questioned the means for achieving such outcomes through non-formal teaching methods. Six interviews and four observations were conducted with 4-H environmental educators in Georgia. Study participants defined effective instruction in Georgia 4-H EE as novel and student-centered, where the educator utilizes their own distinct teaching styles, management of the learning environment, and extra resources while capitalizing on teachable moments. Educators worked to create both personal and environmental connections to inspire students to pursue science and environmental careers. EE trainings should prepare educators with either natural …

Protective Factors Among Postsecondary Students Enrolled In A First-Generation Program, Ashley L. Austin, Stacy K. Vincent, Andrea Kirby Jan 2018

Protective Factors Among Postsecondary Students Enrolled In A First-Generation Program, Ashley L. Austin, Stacy K. Vincent, Andrea Kirby

Journal of Research in Technical Careers

For generations, researchers have examined attributes that contribute to the adaptability of low socioeconomic youth. Attributes that help one become resilient are known as protective factors. The purpose of this descriptive study was to explore the protective factor(s) that contributed to the enrollment of first-generation, low-socioeconomic status (SES) students at a southern land-grant university. The population consisted of postsecondary students in a First Scholars program during the 2015-2016 academic year. The authors examine the existing literature on the effects of low SES on postsecondary education in order to explore what assists these students in maintaining a steadfast behavior. Recommendations are …

A Practitioner's View Of Institutional Corruption Through The Lens Of The Health Care System: An Essay, Reuben Guttman Jan 2018

A Practitioner's View Of Institutional Corruption Through The Lens Of The Health Care System: An Essay, Reuben Guttman

Emory Business Law Review

I cannot say the root of my cynicism stems solely from my litigation against the healthcare industry. I spent years representing industrial and service unions and their members; the average working person'or hardcore union member'has no allusions about the power of institutions to corrupt. They often view their own employer and their union with the same gimlet eye. Yet, my litigation against the healthcare industry has, at the very least, been a policy laboratory for the understanding of institutional wrongdoing and deficiencies in compliance enforcement. While the lessons I have learned are in the first instance about 'fraud, waste and …

A Call To Action: Cybersecurity Due Diligence In Today's Business Climate, Steven Grimberg, Mark Ray Jan 2018

A Call To Action: Cybersecurity Due Diligence In Today's Business Climate, Steven Grimberg, Mark Ray

Emory Business Law Review

These days it is the rare news cycle that goes by without referencing the latest cyber-related data breach to impact some fill-in-the-blank, well-known consumer-based company. Long gone are the days where executives and Board members did not worry about cybersecurity for their respective organizations, but incredibly too many of them continue to admire the problem or pretend that 'it won't happen to us' until, well, it does. So, what can be done about it? The answer, consistent with traditional views of corporate governance best practices, is to engage in due diligence'proactive action by asking the right questions to the appropriate …

Effective Compliance Means Imposing Individual Liability, Reuben A. Guttman Jan 2018

Effective Compliance Means Imposing Individual Liability, Reuben A. Guttman

Emory Business Law Review

Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates said it in a memo dated September 9, 2015, and her successor, Rod Rosenstein, said it in remarks dated October 6, 2017: corporations act through individuals, and compliance enforcement must necessarily account for holding individuals liable for the wrongs they orchestrate under cover of the corporate umbrella. The logic is reasonable and necessary. We blame corporations for catastrophic environmental events, misbranded drugs that cause injury, and financial products that destroy the life savings of those who have toiled for a living; yet at the helm of the corporations'guiding their path of impropriety'are people, many of …

Runnable, Ruinable Repo And The Great Recession: A Panic-Proofing Approach To Financial Regulation, Aaron Metviner Jan 2018

Runnable, Ruinable Repo And The Great Recession: A Panic-Proofing Approach To Financial Regulation, Aaron Metviner

Emory Business Law Review

This Paper argues for a sort of Gorton/Ricks hybrid approach to panic-proofing, whereby the federal government (1) insures the very-short-term repo obligations of the SIFIs (while also ensuring the high-quality of the collateral under those repo agreements) and (2) limits the exposure levels of the SIFIs to all other forms of uninsured runnable debt.

Thick As Thieves? Big Pharma Wields Its Power With The Help Of Government Regulation, Leslie E. Sekerka, Lauren Benishek Jan 2018

Thick As Thieves? Big Pharma Wields Its Power With The Help Of Government Regulation, Leslie E. Sekerka, Lauren Benishek

Emory Business Law Review

Americans are barraged by an endless flow of ads that claim to remedy medical maladies with prescribed drugs. The commercials depict productive and happy lives, with suggestive associations that human flourishing can be achieved via pharmaceutical intervention. The appeals are accompanied by an exhaustive inventory of potentially negative life-altering side effects. As ads end with this depiction of relational bliss through drug use, viewers hear a fast-paced listing of monotone non-segmented disclaimers, which can range from modest impacts (e.g., slight weight gain) to very serious implications (e.g., suicidal ideations). Research suggests that hearing about the risks of use may increase …
