Many Millennials (aged 18-30 in 2016) are struggling with financial capability and independence. As efforts unfold to address this issue by improving financial education, Millennials themselves can offer helpful family-centered ideas for children 's financial learning. As part of the Whats and Hows of Family Financial $ocialization project, this qualitative study explored the ideas of 126 undergraduate students enrolled in family finance classes at three institutions from three regions of the United States about how and what they intend to teach their future children about finances. Thematic content analysis and coding of interviews revealed four core themes: (a) "Communicating Family …
Educational Leadership Development In Saudi Arabia: Experiences Of Participants Of The Saudi Oxford Program For Educational Leaders, Azizah Fhad Alogali
Educational Leadership Development In Saudi Arabia: Experiences Of Participants Of The Saudi Oxford Program For Educational Leaders, Azizah Fhad Alogali
Theses and Dissertations
Given the recent surge of interest in educational leadership development in Saudi Arabia, a qualitative study was undertaken to evaluate the perspectives of participants in one intensive leadership training program called the Saudi Oxford Program for Educational Leaders (SOPEL). Using interview data with SOPEL participants and an analysis of their final projects, a holistic understanding of the participants’ experiences emerged. Findings included a confusion/conflation of concepts of leadership and management; a desire for more responsiveness and sensitivity to feedback on the part of the participants; logistical, linguistic, and administrative hurdles; quality control concerns; and a need to evaluate programs’ effectiveness …
Generating Adversarial Attacks For Sparse Neural Networks, Jack H. Chen, Walt Woods
Generating Adversarial Attacks For Sparse Neural Networks, Jack H. Chen, Walt Woods
Maseeh Summer Undergraduate Research Experience
Neural networks provide state-of-the-art accuracy for image classification tasks. However traditional networks are highly susceptible to imperceivable perturbations to their inputs known as adversarial attacks that drastically change the resulting output. The magnitude of these perturbations can be measured as Mean Squared Error (MSE). We use genetic algorithms to produce black-box adversarial attacks and examine MSE on state-of-the-art networks. This method generates an attack that converts 90% confidence on a correct class to 50% confidence of a targeted, incorrect class after 2000 epochs. We will generate and examine attacks and their MSE against several sparse neural networks. We theorize that …

Clinical Relevance Of Μ-Opioid Receptor A118g Polymorphism In Demographically Variant Populations, Iryna Pokotylyuk, Srishti Kulshrestha, Zvi G. Loewy, Priyank Kumar
Touro College of Pharmacy (New York) Publications and Research
Use of opioids is essential in providing a broad and effective analgesic effect. Opioid dosing has to be monitored and controlled in order to manage pain and the corresponding side effects due to opioid treatment. A very common single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) associated with the µ opioid receptor is A118G. A118G, located on exon 1 of the µ-opioid receptor gene (OPRM1), may alter how patients respond to opioid treatment. This polymorphism results in an exchange of adenine for guanine, which in turn leads to substitution of asparagine for the aspartic acid. In order to understand how individuals with the G …

Rethinking The Individual In International Law, Chiara Giorgetti
Rethinking The Individual In International Law, Chiara Giorgetti
Lewis & Clark Law Review
The acceptance of the individual as a subject of international law has been gradual and asymmetrical. Individuals have become international law subjects in their own rights in some international legal areas, including human rights and international criminal law. This affords individuals substantive rights and obligations, as well as procedural rights. In most legal areas, however, individuals acquired substantive rights, but not direct procedural rights. In those instances, individuals need the filter of a nationality to enforce their claim and remedy in international proceedings. This Article criticizes the nationality-based approach and argues that there are better and alternative ways to provide …
Removing State Constitution Badges Of Inferiority, Allan W. Vestal
Removing State Constitution Badges Of Inferiority, Allan W. Vestal
Lewis & Clark Law Review
Our state constitutions contain archaic, ineffective, and unnecessary provisions that assign badges of inferiority to some citizens. Using Thomas Jefferson’s standard for when constitutional imperfections justify amendment, this Article identifies two groups of clauses. The first are provisions that were substantially exclusionary as enacted and relate to unconstitutional practices. Included are provisions relating to religious tests for public office, segregated schools, bars to marriage equality, and religious tests for witness competency. The second group are provisions that were symbolically exclusionary as enacted and are redolent of a prejudiced history. Examples involve the use of gendered language, clauses which make inappropriate …
The Failure Of “Sorry”: An Empirical Evaluation Of Apology Laws, Health Care, And Medical Malpractice, Benjamin J. Mcmichael
The Failure Of “Sorry”: An Empirical Evaluation Of Apology Laws, Health Care, And Medical Malpractice, Benjamin J. Mcmichael
Lewis & Clark Law Review
As part of the effort to contain the size and frequency of medical malpractice claims, many states have adopted apology laws. These laws make apologies from physicians to patients inadmissible in any subsequent court proceedings. The basic rationale behind apology laws is that meritless malpractice claims are less likely to be filed when a physician can apologize to his or her patient without risking those statements being used in court. Through the use of a unique dataset, this Article corrects several misunderstandings concerning this new generation of tort reform.
First, it shows that while apology laws may reduce the frequency …
Shooting Down Oliphant: Self-Defense As An Answer To Crime In Indian Country, Adam Crepelle
Shooting Down Oliphant: Self-Defense As An Answer To Crime In Indian Country, Adam Crepelle
Lewis & Clark Law Review
Crime is a dire public safety problem in Indian country as Indians suffer violent crime at twice the rate of any other racial group. Indian country’s unique and confusing jurisdictional scheme combined with a shortage of police leave Indians easy targets for those looking to commit crimes. A largely unexplored answer to crime in Indian country is self-defense. This Article posits that the United States self-defense jurisprudence may make self-defense the most practical solution to crime in some parts of Indian country.
The Article discusses the history of self-defense laws and the relationship between self-defense laws and firearms. The Article …
Law, Visual Art, And Money, Lydia Pallas Loren
Law, Visual Art, And Money, Lydia Pallas Loren
Lewis & Clark Law Review
This Essay explores areas where law and art interact, and where, it seems, money changes things. It discusses three areas of the law that encourage the creation of visual art, starting with the basic combination of property and contract, and moving to the more targeted law of copyright and, finally, the law specifically aimed at the visual arts: the Visual Artists Rights Act (VARA). The Essay then takes up the task of exploring the ways in which both the rights and protections offered by VARA and by copyright law are affected by commercial exploitation of visual artworks. It also examines …
“Sex” Is Messy (And Always Has Been): A Textualist Argument For Application Of Title Vii To Sexual Orientation Discrimination, Rebecca J. Ok
“Sex” Is Messy (And Always Has Been): A Textualist Argument For Application Of Title Vii To Sexual Orientation Discrimination, Rebecca J. Ok
Lewis & Clark Law Review
Three recent cases have created a circuit split as to whether Title VII’s prohibition on discrimination “because of . . . sex” applies to sexual orientation discrimination, priming this issue for Supreme Court review. Events suggesting a textualist turn on the Supreme Court mean the advocate must consider whether a textualist argument can be made for application of Title VII to sexual orientation discrimination. Treatment of the topic of sexual orientation by the medical community, the commercial film industry, and the mainstream news media in the 1960s is examined. It is argued that treatment of the topic of sexual orientation …
Jumpstart Regulation Crowdfunding: What Is Wrong And How To Fix It, Jo Won
Jumpstart Regulation Crowdfunding: What Is Wrong And How To Fix It, Jo Won
Lewis & Clark Law Review
In 2015, the Securities and Exchange Commission adopted Regulation Crowdfunding, which permitted small businesses and startups to raise capital from the general public online. Unfortunately, Regulation Crowdfunding failed its essential purpose to facilitate capital formation for small businesses and startups due to its high transaction costs and low offering limit. But it turns out that equity crowdfunding in other countries—especially in Great Britain—is highly successful, and in some cases, exceeds venture capital funding. In these countries, equity crowdfunding’s transaction costs and disclosure requirements are much lower than, and issuers may raise more money than, offerings under Regulation Crowdfunding. Furthermore, the …

Background: Social validation evaluates the importance and acceptability of treatment goals, procedures, and outcomes. Previous studies for treatments that train speech production in aphasia have applied social validation during the post-treatment period or to treatment protocols that are already fully developed.
Aims: The purposes of this study were to (1) examine the social validity of goals and procedures experienced in speech production treatment for people with aphasia and (2) evaluate the feasibility of procedural choice-making during such tasks.
Method: Seven people with aphasia and eight speech-language pathologists were interviewed about previous treatment that targeted speech production. Participants were also observed …
The Application Of The Learning Sciences To The Design And Delivery Of Student-Centered Learning Activities, Michael Hamlin
The Application Of The Learning Sciences To The Design And Delivery Of Student-Centered Learning Activities, Michael Hamlin
Touro University Worldwide Publications and Research
The goal of this chapter is to provide a framework for creating student-centered learning activities that rest on a firm theoretical foundation and are based on a definition that highlights the actual learner abilities involved in successful student performance. To achieve this goal, it is important to establish a definition of student-centered learning that can be used to guide the selection of the important pedagogical elements that must be addressed in the design of student-centered learning activities. Having established these foundational elements, the chapter provides a framework for the design of case-based instruction that incorporates teaching and learning principles derived …

Like other spiritually sincere youth, Caleb struggles with pornography use. At first, he was repulsed by it, but he found himself drawn back to it. The arousal was preoccupying and pleasurable. Pornography use became a habit. He still wanted to go on a mission, marry in the temple, be a worthy father. Repeatedly, he resolved to stop using pornography. He felt anger and shame every time he fell short. Caleb became discouraged and felt like he could never change. He felt that he didn’t deserve God’s or anyone else’s love and forgiveness because of all his broken promises.

INTRODUCTION: Primary THA in an irradiated hip poses risk for early loosening and inadequate ingrowth. Adverse effects such as decreased vascularity and increased infection risk pose a threat.
CASE PRESENTATION: Our patient was a case of post-irradiation (for cervical cancer) bilateral THA loosening causing aseptic acetabular loosening on one side and catastrophic septic loosening with a Paprosky type IIIB acetabular defect with pelvic discontinuity on the contralateral side.
DISCUSSION: There have been various studies documenting deleterious effects of irradiation on osseoin-tegration and provide a challenge for long-term implant stability in THA patients.
CONCLUSION: A meticulous treatment protocol with contemporary implant …
