Background: We describe an approach to implementation and dissemination that focuses on changing outcomes variables within a large, defined population and attempts to provide cost-effective opportunities and resources-which might include the provision of both digital and traditional interventions-to address individual needs and interests. We present a case example of how aspects of this model are being applied to increase reach, engagement and outcomes for individuals who complete a national eating disorders screen, and are likely to have an eating disorder but who are not in treatment. Reframing Aural Skills Instruction Based On Research In Working Memory, Timothy K. Chenette

Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

This article explores the implications of research on working memory for aural skills instruction. The first half of the article shows that the system of working memory unifies Karpinski (2000)’s “component” model of aural skills cognition and demonstrates working memory’s fundamental importance to aural skills learning. The second half of the article adapts tests of working memory into exercises appropriate for the aural skills classroom.

Despite the greater demand for inclusivity, the literature used in the Music Theory classroom is still limited; the materials for examples and analysis are mostly music drawn from the Western classical musical canon. In my effort to expand the range of analytical materials in undergraduate music theory courses, to demonstrate the continuing quest of diversifying our discipline, and to broaden music students’ experiences by exposing them to unfamiliar music, I incorporate contemporary East Asian composers’ music in my Form and Analysis course. This lesson plan and accompanying slide show (PowerPoint and PDF) present secondary functions as energetic, goal-directed chords that contain a leading tone and therefore mimic the voice leading of dominant-to-tonic progressions. It is designed for use in the second week on tonicization, after students have been introduced to secondary functions. In presenting secondary dominants as chords that contain local leading tones that demand upward resolution (onto their local “tonics”), it embodies a pedagogical approach that stresses the importance of identifying a local leading tone and its upwards resolution as a prerequisite for understanding secondary function. This collection of 44 short phrases, ranging from the baroque to romantic periods, is designed to help teachers quickly and easily locate musical examples for the purpose of teaching phrase structure, as well as testing students’ knowledge of the same. The collection includes numerous examples of periods and sentences, as well as compound periods. Many examples are straightforward, but there are also many that modulate, add phrase extensions, have interesting hypermetrical structures, etc. Given the variety of analytical paradigms, these examples have not been pre-analyzed. Electric aircraft face a steep tradeoff between the demand for runway performance and range. While fuel based propulsion technologies typically increase in specific power with increasing size, electric propulsion is typically much more scalable. This system scalability enables alternative designs including distributed propulsion, optionally powered propulsion units, and vectored thrust, which can all contribute to better runway performance and range. In this paper, we explore how continuously powered distributed propulsion can reduce takeoff distance while still satisfying range constraints. Significant turbine-wake interactions greatly reduce power output in a wind farm. If different turbine hub heights and rotor diameters are included in the same wind farm, the wake interference in the farm will be reduced, resulting in a lower cost of energy (COE) than a farm with identical turbines. In this paper, we present a method to model wind farm COE in farms with hub heights and rotor diameters that vary across the wind farm. We also demonstrate how to optimize these wind farms to minimize COE. The results show that COE can be greatly reduced in wind farms with …

Large-Scale Multidisciplinary Optimization Of An Electric Aircraft For On-Demand Mobility, John Hwang, Andrew Ning

Distributed electric propulsion is a key enabling technology for on-demand electric aircraft concepts. NASA’s X-57 Maxwell X-plane is a demonstrator for this technology, and it features a row of high-lift propellers distributed along the leading edge of its wing to enable better aerodynamic efficiency at cruise and improved ride quality in addition to less noise and emissions. This study applies adjoint- based multidisciplinary design optimization to this highly coupled design problem.
