Background/aim: We compared the effects of volume-controlled equal ratio ventilation (VC-ERV) and volume-controlled conventional ratio ventilation (VC-CRV) on oxygenation, ventilation, respiratory mechanics, and hemodynamic status during mechanical ventilation with recruitment maneuver (RM) and positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) in patients undergoing laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Materials and methods: A total of 111 patients scheduled for laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy were randomized to ventilation with inspiratory to expiratory ratio of 1:1 (Group VC-ERV) or 1:2 (Group VC-CRV) following tracheal intubation. Background/aim: In Turkey, lenalidomide plus dexamethasone (RD) has been used to treat relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM) since 2010. This retrospective, single-center study evaluated the efficacy and tolerability of RD in patients with RRMM between October 2010 and June 2016. Materials and methods: Patients' records were reviewed, and overall (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were assessed. Results: One hundred and twenty patients (71 males; 59.2%) were included in the study. Materials and methods: The individuals who met inclusion criteria of the study were in patients of a hospital and a long-term care facility. Background/aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the microbiological profile and resistance rates of diabetic foot infections (DFIs) and to determine the effect of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) on the microbiology, clinical condition, and treatment outcomes. Materials and methods: Characteristics, laboratory and imaging data, and the treatment modalities of patients admitted to our hospital with a diagnosis of DFI (PEDIS classification 3-4) during 2005-2016 were analyzed according to the presence of PAD. Results: Of 112 patients who were included in this study, 86 (76.8%) had PAD. Patients with PAD were older and had higher amputation rates (P < 0.05). A microbiological profile of patients revealed a predominance of gram-positive bacteria (57.1%). Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus spp. were the most frequently encountered bacteria. Incidence of Pseudomonas spp. infection was higher in the PAD group (P < 0.05). Of all patients, 24.1% had multidrug-resistant (MDR) microorganisms in their wound cultures. Presence of MDR bacteria in patients with PAD was 4.9-fold higher than that in patients without PAD (P < 0.05). Conclusion: This retrospective study indicates that PAD has a significant role, especially in elderly patients with DFIs. Patients should be promptly evaluated and treated for PAD to prevent infections with resistant microorganisms and limb loss.

Background/aim: We report the analysis of ketamine doses needed and the recovery times in pediatric oncology patients undergoing repeated radiotherapy sessions. Materials and methods: In a single-blind prospective study design, thirty-three pediatric patients undergoing radiotherapy due to oncologic disorders received 2 mg/kg ketamine and 10 μg/kg atropine intravenously and the rescue drug to be administered was ketamine at 0.5 mg/kg when the sedation level was inadequate. Total ketamine consumption, additional doses, and recovery time were recorded. Results: Data of 635 consecutive radiotherapy sessions were evaluated. Background/aim: Lymphoma cases diagnosed at one of the largest tertiary reference centers in Turkey were reviewed and findings were compared to those reported from other regions of the world. Materials and methods: Lymphomas diagnosed between 2000 and 2017 in the pathology laboratory of Hacettepe University were identified. A total of 4239 cases were analyzed. The Mozambique Eyecare Project was an international partnership to implement and research eye health education in Mozambique and the Africa region. An optometry degree was developed at Universidade Lúrio, Mozambique. In addition, existing eye health workers were upskilled with training. Researchers from various disciplines evaluated the project and its potential for impact on eye health in the region. The body of evidence generated from the research provides useful lessons for development programmes in general, as well as specific lessons for delivering eye health education and service delivery models for lowincome settings.
