Research-Led Curriculum Innovation To Enhance Core Employability Attributes For Environmental Science Graduates, Charlotte Braungardt, Alison Stokes, C Guy, Paul Warwick
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Aims of project: To enhance graduate skills and cultivate professionalism, resilience and global citizenship through innovation of a research-led employability curriculum. Background/context to project: The lack of employability skills among STEM graduates, in particular environmental science, has been highlighted in the 2016 Wakeham Review and was identified as key area for curriculum development by internal reports (e.g. Kneale, 2016). Surveys consistently indicate that ‘soft’ skills, such as communication, team working and a positive ‘can do’ attitude are highly valued by employers (e.g. Archer & Davison, 2008; CBI, 2009; Lowden et al., 2011). At the same time, many undergraduate students experience …

The Role Of Felt Or Enacted Criticism In Parents’ Decision Making In Differing Contexts And Communities: Toward A Formal Grounded Theory, Sarah J. Neill, Imelda Coyne
The Role Of Felt Or Enacted Criticism In Parents’ Decision Making In Differing Contexts And Communities: Toward A Formal Grounded Theory, Sarah J. Neill, Imelda Coyne
School of Nursing and Midwifery
Felt or enacted criticism was identified as a significant influence on White British parents’ decision making during acute childhood illness in a substantive grounded theory “Containing acute childhood illness within family life.” These parents sought to avoid further criticism, sometimes leading to delayed consultation. Using Glaserian grounded theory principles, we conducted a secondary analysis of data from three studies, to establish the transferability and modifiability of the original theory to other settings and communities in Ireland and England. Felt or enacted criticism was found to operate across the childhood age range, social groups, and settings. Parent’s strategies to avoid criticism …

Three-Dimensional Dynamics Of Baroclinic Tides Over A Seamount, Vasiliy Vlasenko, Nataliya Stashchuk, W. Alex M. Nimmo-Smith
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology general circulation model is used for the analysis of baroclinic tides over Anton Dohrn Seamount (ADS), in the North Atlantic. The model output is validated against in situ data collected during the 136th cruise of the RRS “James Cook” in May–June 2016. The observational data set includes velocity time series recorded at two moorings as well as temperature, salinity, and velocity profiles collected at 22 hydrological stations. Synthesis of observational and model data enabled the reconstruction of the details of baroclinic tidal dynamics over ADS. It was found that the baroclinic tidal waves are generated …

Assessing The Impact Of Benzo[A]Pyrene With The In Vitro Fish Gut Model: An Integrated Approach For Eco-Genotoxicological Studies., Laura M. Langan, Silvia Arossa, Stewart F. Owen, Awadhesh N. Jha
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
In vitro models are emerging tools for reducing reliance on traditional toxicity tests, especially in areas where information is sparse. For studies of fish, this is especially important for extrahepatic organs, such as the intestine, which, until recently, have been largely overlooked in favour of the liver or gill. Considering the importance of dietary uptake of contaminants, the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) intestine-derived cell line RTgutGC was cultured, to test its suitability as a high-throughput in vitro model. Benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) is an important contaminant and a model polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH). Over 48 h exposure, a range of endpoints and …

A Systematic Assessment Of Architectural Approaches For Solving The Housing Problem In Iraq, Omar Al-Hafith, B. K. Satish, Simon Bradbury, Wilde P De
School of Art, Design and Architecture
© 2018 The Authors Iraq experiences housing shortage of around 1–1.5 million units with low production rate. Managing this challenge requires integrated efforts across a number of fields. One way forward is to develop an integral and appropriate architectural solution. In Iraq, it remains unknown which of the possible architectural approaches is adequate to address its housing challenges while considering occupants׳ preferences. Aiming at helping in forming a solution, this study critically assesses the possible building patterns and construction approaches, which represent the main architectural solutions׳ framework. To achieve this aim, an extensive literature review was conducted that explores possible …

The Aesthetic And Its Relationship To Business Ethics: Philosophical Underpinnings And Implications For Further Research, Dm Ladkin
Plymouth Business School
The article clarifies the way in which ‘the aesthetic’ is conceptualised in relation to business ethics in order to assess its potential to inform theory building and developmental practices within the business ethics field. A systematic review of relevant literature is undertaken which identifies three ontologically based accounts of the relationship between the aesthetic and business ethics: ‘positive’ ones (in which ‘the good is equated with ‘the beautiful’), ‘negative’ accounts (in which aesthetic craving is seen to foster ethical malfeasance) and ‘Postmodern’ renderings (in which the aesthetic and the ethical are seen to be ideologically informed). Five epistemologically based approaches …

Reports of bitumen stranding on the ocean beaches of southern Australia date back to the early days of European settlement. Previous investigations have shown that this ‘coastal bitumen’ comprises three categories of stranded petroleum: waxy bitumen, asphaltite and oil slicks. All three varieties are physically and chemically distinct from each other, and bear no geochemical resemblance to any indigenous Australian crude oil. This study focuses on the most common variety, waxy bitumen, which accounted for 90% of the strandings on six South Australian beaches repeatedly surveyed during 1991–1992. Geochemical analysis of 96 individual specimens collected from these survey sites and …

Sedimentologic magnetofabric paleomagnetic studies were carried out on the early Ordovician La Pedrera Formation (Santa Victoria Group) in the Mojotoro Range Salta province. These studies aim at contributing to a better knowledge on the paleogeographic position of the Pampia block in the Early Paleozoic in relation to the Gondwana supercontinent. Oriented samples were collected from 12 sites distributed in three localities. These outcrops consist of middle to proximal shelf deposits of mainly quarzitic composition. Studies on the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) suggest a depositional fabric in one of these localities meanwhile some tectonic influence cannot be ruled out in …

Protein Provision In Critically Ill Adults Requiring Enteral Feeding, A Mitchell, R Clemente, C Downer, F Greer, K Allan, A Collinson, S Taylor
School of Health Professions
Background: In a previous audit, 81% of enteral protein prescriptions failed to meet protein guidelines. To address this, a very high protein enteral formula and protein supplements were introduced, and protein prescriptions were adjusted to account for non-nutritional energy sources displacing enteral formula. This follow-up audit compared protein provision in critically ill adults requiring exclusive enteral nutrition (EN), firstly, to local and international guidelines and, secondly, following changes to practice, with the previous audit in the same ICU. Methods: Data collected from 106 adults consecutively admitted to the ICU of a UK tertiary hospital and requiring exclusive EN ≥3 days. …
