Analyzing Stakeholders’ Workshop Dialogue For Evidence Of Social Learning, Amanda L. Bentley Brymer, J. D. Wulfhorst, Mark W. Brunson Jan 2018

Analyzing Stakeholders’ Workshop Dialogue For Evidence Of Social Learning, Amanda L. Bentley Brymer, J. D. Wulfhorst, Mark W. Brunson

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

After much debate and synthesis, social learning scholarship is entering an era of empirical research. Given the range across individual-, network-, and systems-level perspectives and scales, clear documentation of social learning processes is critical for making claims about social learning outcomes and their impacts. Past studies have relied on participant recall and concept maps to document perceptions of social learning process and outcome. Using an individual-centric perspective and importing ideas from communication and psychology on question-answer learning through conversational agents, we contribute an expanded conceptual framework and qualitative analytical strategy for assessing stakeholder dialogue for evidence of social learning. We …

The Implications Of Group Norms For Adaptation In Collectively Managed Agricultural Systems: Evidence From Sri Lankan Paddy Farmers, Arielle Tozier De La Poterie, Emily Burchfield, Amanda R. Carrico Jan 2018

The Implications Of Group Norms For Adaptation In Collectively Managed Agricultural Systems: Evidence From Sri Lankan Paddy Farmers, Arielle Tozier De La Poterie, Emily Burchfield, Amanda R. Carrico

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

A growing literature seeks to explore the factors shaping adaptation to climate change. In collectively managed common pool resource systems, there is often a tension between behavior that benefits the individual and actions that benefit a larger group. Resource users in sustainable systems must therefore work together to ensure outcomes that are beneficial to the group as a whole. However, in the face of changing social, political, and environmental conditions, community norms may change, leading to the emerging of new behavioral patterns. Understanding when and why people decide to act in ways that benefit the group as a whole can …

It Is A Mindboggling Dilemma: To Play Or Not To Play Youth Sports Due To Concussion Risks?, Tracey Carter Jan 2018

It Is A Mindboggling Dilemma: To Play Or Not To Play Youth Sports Due To Concussion Risks?, Tracey Carter

Law Faculty Scholarship

Concussions and their long term effects resulting from football collisions have recently entered the forefront of social debate. Movies like Concussion as well as high-profile lawsuits due to post-concussion health effects have casted a spotlight on brain injuries at the collegiate and professional level. However, this debate has equal application in youth sports—recent studies show that sports-related concussions at the elementary, middle, and high school levels are equally concerning. Youth sports are safer when fewer athletes suffer from sports-related concussions. But litigation is not the best avenue to make youth sports safer. Youth sports can be improved by: 1) primary …

Methods: Systematic review of literature from CINHAL, Indiana State University Library, Google Scholar, and PubMed from last five years.

Results: Nurses were found to agree with many guidelines. Personal bias, or habit influenced poor implementation. Although …

/Ɛɡ/-Raising Is Straightforward? I Beg To Differ!, Joseph A. Stanley

Faculty Publications

This Study

Remaining questions:

  • BEG is only studied in areas with BAG-raising.
  • What about other places?
  • Short, common words have only been studied.
  • What about other words?

Anecdotal observation:

  • I’m from St. Louis and I have BEG-raising in most words, except a few like integrity, segregate, negligent, and regulate.
  • St. Louis is not known to have BEG-raising, and these words have not been included in other studies.

Hypotheses:

  1. BEG-raising without BAG-raising is more widespread than Nevada.
  2. BEG-raising is less common when it is followed by a sonorant.

Child marriage, formal or informal, is a union where at least one of the partners is below the age of 18 years. This human rights violation has complicated consequences on children and society. According to the Egypt Census of 2017, child marriage remains an issue. In Egypt, nearly 1 in every 20 girls (4%) between the ages of 15 to 17 years are either currently married or were married before. The same applies for 1 in every 10 (11%) adolescent girls 15-19 years, with large differentials between the rural and urban residence (CAPMAS, 2017. Egypt). The four proposed policy alternatives …

This paper sheds light on the Productive Families Program, one of the initiatives by MOSS to combat poverty. A Standardized Comparison Of Peri-Operative Complications After Minimally Invasive Esophagectomy: Ivor Lewis Versus Mckeown., Andrew M. Brown, Michael J. Pucci, Adam C. Berger, Talar Tatarian, Nathaniel R. Evans Iii, Ernest L. Rosato, Francesco Palazzo Jan 2018

A Standardized Comparison Of Peri-Operative Complications After Minimally Invasive Esophagectomy: Ivor Lewis Versus Mckeown., Andrew M. Brown, Michael J. Pucci, Adam C. Berger, Talar Tatarian, Nathaniel R. Evans Iii, Ernest L. Rosato, Francesco Palazzo

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: While our institutional approach to esophageal resection for cancer has traditionally favored a minimally invasive (MI) 3-hole, McKeown esophagectomy (MIE 3-hole) during the last five years several factors has determined a shift in our practice with an increasing number of minimally invasive Ivor Lewis (MIE IL) resections being performed. We compared peri-operative outcomes of the two procedures, hypothesizing that MIE IL would be less morbid in the peri-operative setting compared to MIE 3-hole.

METHODS: Our institution's IRB-approved esophageal database was queried to identify all patients who underwent totally MI esophagectomy (MIE IL vs. MIE 3-hole) from June 2011 to …

Investigating The Causes And Cures For Unclear Scholarly Writing, Marlene Ingrid Mahony Jan 2018

Investigating The Causes And Cures For Unclear Scholarly Writing, Marlene Ingrid Mahony

Doctoral Dissertations

This qualitative dissertation investigated possible causes and cures for unclear scholarly writing. For this study, a stipulative definition of unclear scholarly writing, or “academese,” is that the language tends to be vague and verbose. The problem, according to the included literature, is that people who use or accept vague language have less academic, social, professional, and civic power. Academese, some say, can detach readers and that can accordingly diminish collective exchange. Because higher education is meant to share knowledge, promote agency, and prepare students to communicate powerfully within and beyond the university, this study researched the causes and cures of …

Sarah has unexpectedly been accepted into the MBA program with a scholarship a year earlier than she planned. Classes begin in two weeks and the school she is attending does not allow first year MBAs to work outside of the school curriculum. Sarah has decided to divest her business and now must consider several options to do so. The Effect Of Software Team Personality Composition On Learning And Performance: Making The “Dream” Team, Greg Anderson, Mark J. Keith, Julianne Francisco, Sarah Fox Jan 2018

The Effect Of Software Team Personality Composition On Learning And Performance: Making The “Dream” Team, Greg Anderson, Mark J. Keith, Julianne Francisco, Sarah Fox

Faculty Publications

Optimizing work team composition in organizational and educational environments is an important task toward maximizing performance. Social science research has revealed that personality trait composition influences team cohesion and performance. However, this research has not been well-adapted into the IS context. In addition, prior research demonstrates how individual personality traits impact teams, but fails to appropriately characterize overall team personality composition. We expand this research by 1) characterizing holistic personality compositions, and 2) examining team learning in addition to performance in the IS context. We draw from theory on team performance and “Big 5” trait composition. Results demonstrate that teams …
