The Guided Innovation Model: Messy Human Innovation, Darin Freeburg Jan 2018

The Guided Innovation Model: Messy Human Innovation, Darin Freeburg

Faculty Publications

This paper outlines the theoretical foundation and framework for the Guided Innovation Model, which puts nonprofit organizations in a position to increase innovation through the application of Knowledge Management tools. This is facilitated by information and knowledge professionals. It also outlines a suggested approach for implementation of the model. The purpose of the paper is to provide an in-depth foundation which future work can build upon in specific contexts. Given the complexity and constancy of social change, nonprofits must continually innovate to meet the needs of their community. This model provides a framework for how they can do this without …

The Knowledge Lens: Equipping Information Professionals To Spark Innovation Within Organizations And Society, Darin Freeburg Jan 2018

The Knowledge Lens: Equipping Information Professionals To Spark Innovation Within Organizations And Society, Darin Freeburg

Faculty Publications

This article outlines the Knowledge Lens—a way of seeing more clearly the opportunities for knowledge creation within organizations and society. It is proposed as a model for schools of Library and Information Science (LIS) to follow when considering curriculum changes. Instead of producing two sets of graduates—those in information and those in knowledge, each lacking the insight of the other—this model provides a foundation for embedding knowledge throughout the curriculum to equip information professionals with the requisite skills and understanding to lead innovative knowledge work in whatever organization they join. It includes three groupings and six elements. The groupings bring …

Academic Information On Twitter: A User Survey, Ehsan Mohammadi, Mike Thelwall, Mary Kwasny, Kristi L. Holmes Jan 2018

Academic Information On Twitter: A User Survey, Ehsan Mohammadi, Mike Thelwall, Mary Kwasny, Kristi L. Holmes

Faculty Publications

Although counts of tweets citing academic papers are used as an informal indicator of interest, little is known about who tweets academic papers and who uses Twitter to find scholarly information. Without knowing this, it is difficult to draw useful conclusions from a publication being frequently tweeted. This study surveyed 1,912 users that have tweeted journal articles to ask about their scholarly-related Twitter uses. Almost half of the respondents (45%) did not work in academia, despite the sample probably being biased towards academics. Twitter was used most by people with a social science or humanities background. People tend to leverage …

© 2018 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Systems capable of estimating visibility distances under foggy weather conditions are extremely useful for next-generation cooperative situational awareness and collision avoidance systems. In this paper, we present a brief review of noticeable approaches for determining visibility distance under foggy weather conditions. We then propose a novel approach based on the combination of a deep learning method for feature extraction and an SVM classifier. We present a quantitative evaluation of the proposed solution and show that our approach provides better performance results compared to an earlier approach that was based on the combination …

Development Of Simple Devices For Point-Of-Care Screening Of Bacterial Infection And Inflammatory Markers, Julaluk Noiphung

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

A paper-based analytical devices (PADs) provides a great benefit in medical diagnostics, especially in the developing world. The first part of this dissertation describes the effect of sample viscosity on PADs for the measurement of pH and nitrite concentration in human saliva. Preliminary study found that viscosity had a significant effect on the calibration curve of nitrite and a consistent curve could be generated after added washing buffer. Nitrite measurement in artificial saliva with viscosity 1.87-5.10 mPa-s was tested on the proposed device and also showed a good correlation with the standard spectrophotometry method (p=0.8484, paired sample t-test, n=20). Moreover, …

Mechanistic Study Of Potential Herbal Extracts For Development Into Hair Growth-Promoting Product, Woraanong Prugsakij

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Androgenic alopecia (AGA) is a major type of hair loss found in both males and females, caused by the overproduction of 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which is formed from testosterone (T) by the enzymes 5 alpha-reductase (5α-R). In this study, the main focus was on cytokine factors evaluation of Avicennia marina (AM extract) in primary dermal papilla cells (DPCs) from AGA patients and the efficacy in vivo. The present study has revealed that AM extract and its active constituent, avicequinone C (AC) significantly inhibit the enzyme activity of 5α-R on cell-based assay combined with a non-radioactive thin layer chromatography (TLC) using …

Chemosensitizing Effect Of Peptides From Lentinus Squarrosulus On Cisplatin-Induced Apoptosis In Human Lung Cancer Cells, Hnin Ei Ei Khine -

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Cisplatin, platinum-based chemotherapy, is one of the standard chemotherapies for the treatment of lung cancer. However, its usefulness is limited due to the adverse effects and susceptibility to chemoresistance which lead to therapeutic failure. Nowadays, natural chemosensitizers, which can enhance the efficacy and decrease the effective dose of chemo-drugs, have been found to be interested in novel therapeutic. Recently, the anticancer activity of peptides extracted from Lentinus squarrosulus Mont. in human lung cancer cells has been reported. The novel potential of L. squarrosulus peptides as a chemotherapeutic adjuvant to increase cisplatin-induced apoptosis was uncovered in this study. Crude peptides extracted …

Understanding The Value Of Art, Victoria Strole Jan 2018

Understanding The Value Of Art, Victoria Strole

All Student Theses and Dissertations

Artists throughout history have been refining methods of communicating. In doing so, they have improved our perspectives of the world, ourselves, and continue to bring the things that have real value in our lives into focus, giving us an advantageous perspective to breakthrough even our biggest social problems. The arts are a natural and effective long-term element that should be a central part of a well-functioning society.

This thesis uncovers the social value of art using the ideas of John Dewey; how art and culture create each other, that art should be a part of our every day lives, and …

Local And Global Dynamic Bifurcations Of Nonlinear Evolution Equations, Desheng Li, Zhi-Qiang Wang Jan 2018

Local And Global Dynamic Bifurcations Of Nonlinear Evolution Equations, Desheng Li, Zhi-Qiang Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We present new local and global dynamic bifurcation results for nonlinear evolution equations of the form ut + Au = fλ(u) on a Banach space X, where A is a sectorial operator, and λ ∈ R is the bifurcation parameter. Suppose the equation has a trivial solution branch {(0, λ) : λ ∈ R}. Denote Φλ the local semiflow generated by the initial value problem of the equation. It is shown that if the crossing number n at a bifurcation value λ = λ0 is nonzero and moreover, S0 = {0} is an isolated invariant set of Φλ0 , then …

Did They Learn Anything? - Learning Assessment In A General Business Analytics Course, Zsolt Ugray, Brynja Kohler

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

There is a projected need for 2 to 4 million of business translators who are not only experts in their business disciplines but also conversant and familiar with the use and limitations of business analytics. Preparing business students to step into the business translator role requires a general introductory analytics course. This paper presents a multi-component learning assessment to evaluate the depth of learning from such a course. This learning assessment is novel in a sense that it uses four distinct tools, both quantitative and qualitative ones, to measure students’ improvements in a comprehensive manner.

Losing The Spirit Of Tinker V. Des Moines And The Urgent Need To Protect Student Speech, David L. Hudson Jr.

Law Faculty Scholarship

This essay first examines the Tinker case and reminds readers of the powerful language Justice Fortas used in his majority opinion. It explains that the test from Tinker was designed to be a speech-protective standard for student litigants. The second part of the essay evaluates several recent cases, which demonstrate that the once speech-protective standard in Tinker has become a test that is often favorable and deferential to school officials embroiled in student, free-speech controversies.

Law Faculty Scholarship

This essay explains that Justice Thurgood Marshall’s passionate defense of freedom of expression can be seen most clearly in his defense of free-speech rights even when the government acts not as sovereign, but as warden, employer, or educator. In other words, Marshall’s commitment to free-speech is shown most forcefully by how he consistently protected the free-expression rights of inmates, public employees, and public school students.

Antivenin is listed as one of the World Health Organization’s Essential Medicines1, and as such, it is integral to a modern health care system. Antivenin is currently developed through a process of milking venomous animals, in this case, snakes, concentrating the venom, inoculating animals, and isolating antibodies found in their plasma. The aim of this project is to genetically engineer an organism to overexpress common proteins found in snake venom, thereby lowering the cost of antivenin.

Contextualizing Lgbtq Faculty Experiences: An Account Of Sexual Minority Perceptions, Travis Dimitri David Jan 2018

Contextualizing Lgbtq Faculty Experiences: An Account Of Sexual Minority Perceptions, Travis Dimitri David

All Theses And Dissertations

The well-being of faculty is susceptible to influence from intrinsic and extrinsic occupational characteristics. Heterosexism or hostile environments can be associated with decreased satisfaction amongst sexual minorities. As such, this transcendental phenomenology examined perceptions from tenured lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) faculty of their workplace conditions. Eight participants reflected on experiences from within higher education, academic settings. This study purposefully probed how sexual orientation and sexual minority status impacted their overall job satisfaction. Through providing context for social interactions in a traditionally heteronormative environment, cultural and attributional behaviors associated with affecting LGBTQ faculty in higher education was analyzed. …

Boilerplate’S False Dichotomy, James Gibson Jan 2018

Boilerplate’S False Dichotomy, James Gibson

Law Faculty Publications

The argument against enforcing boilerplate contracts (contracts that no one reads) seems clear. Indeed, if this were a court case we would say that the jury is in; the evidence against boilerplate is overwhelming. Yet the judge has yet to render judgment. Courts continue to enforce boilerplate terms, and even those scholars who have exposed boilerplate as an emperor with no clothes are reluctant to gaze upon its nakedness and condemn its use.

This reluctance originates in an assumption that pervades the boilerplate debate—namely, that courts and commentators alike view boilerplate as necessary to the modern transaction. When asked to …

Jurisdictional Idealism And Positivism, John F. Preis

Law Faculty Publications

“If I should call a sheep’s tail a leg, how many legs would it have? Four, because calling a tail a leg would not make it so.” This old quip, often attributed to Abraham Lincoln, captures an issue at the heart of the modern law of subject matter jurisdiction. Some believe that there is a Platonic ideal of jurisdiction that cannot be changed by judicial or legislative fiat. Others take a positivist approach and assert that jurisdiction is nothing more than whatever a legislature says it is. Who is right?

Neither and both. Although neither idealism nor positivism is the …

The New(Clear?) Electricity Federalism: Federal Preemption Of States’ “Zero Emissions Credit” Programs, Joel Eisen Jan 2018

The New(Clear?) Electricity Federalism: Federal Preemption Of States’ “Zero Emissions Credit” Programs, Joel Eisen

Law Faculty Publications

This Article proposes and applies a “conscious disregard” test for resolving the upcoming appellate litigation that involves the conflict between federal authority over the electric grid and state laws providing subsidies to nuclear power plants in the form of “zero emissions credits” (ZECs). This test draws upon principles of conflict preemption, as elaborated in three recent Supreme Court decisions on the intersection of state and federal jurisdiction over the electric grid under the Federal Power Act. It provides that if a state law explicitly aims to directly affect wholesale electricity market prices, terms or conditions, its subsidy program is impermissible …
