Lupus nephritis (LN) is a major cause of among systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. Despite therapeutic advancements, LN patients continue to have a poor prognosis related to socioeconomic status (SES). We sought to establish the correlation between SES and LN prevalence in San Bernardino and Riverside counties of Southern California.

Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) occur in 1.7 million people each year in the USA. Little is known about how the cerebrovasculature is altered after TBI. We previously reported that TBI elicits acute decrements in cerebral vessels near the injury site in rats followed by revascularization over the subsequent 2 weeks. Sexual dimorphism of the brain is well documented and different hormonal levels in males and females differentially modify the recovery process after injury. Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is a condition in which increased abdominal pressure with coughing, laughing, sneezing, or exercise can cause unintentional leakage of urine in the female population. CrossFit and other high impact aerobic exercises, are popular forms of exercise amongst women all age groups. The purpose of this study was to examine specific high impact exercises that can affect SUI in women.

Magnetic focusing of protons is a promising approach to improve patient radiation dose distribution in proton radiosurgery. The paths of individual protons are affected by multiple atomic deflections (multiple Coulomb scattering [MCS]) and affect overall beam characteristics in the patient. The purpose of this project is to account for the effects of MCS in the optimization of focal lengths in magnetically focused proton radiosurgery.

Pituitary apoplexy is a condition of sudden hemorrhage into the pituitary gland, usually at the site of a pituitary adenoma, occurring in 8% of pituitary macroadenomas. The clinical presentation of pituitary apoplexy varies based upon the timing and mechanism of pituitary mass expansion towards the optic nerve or hypothalamus, as well as the hormonal function of the neoplasm and remaining pituitary gland tissue. Nearly all patients present with headache (97%), and fewer patients present with visual field impairment (71%). The number of deaths attributed to synthetic opioids has nearly tripled in the US from 1999 to 2014. Although there is limited evidence regarding the effectiveness of long-term opioid therapy for chronic pain, a condition estimated to affect 11.2% of the US adult population; opioids are often prescribed for this reason in the outpatient setting. Kwashiorkor is a Ghanaian word that literally translates into the phrase “the disease of the disposed child.” It is a disease that is classical seen is an infant who was weaned form the breast milk when a new child is born. Kwashiorkor is characterized by symmetric pitting edema that begins in the lower extremities and spreads to the rest of the body as the disease progressively worsens. Other symptoms include hepatomegaly, thin peeling skin with hyperkeratosis, hyperpigmentation and bradycardia with hypotension. This case report explores the improved cardiac function of treating non- ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy with a left ventricular assist device. The importance of this case study underscores that possible early treatment of acromegalic cardiomyopathy could slow the progression of the cardiomyopathy and prevent invasive cardiac procedures.

Mucosal melanoma is rare, comprising only 1.4% of all melanomas in the United States. Yet it is associated with a worse prognosis compared to cutaneous melanoma due to aggressive biology and advanced stage at diagnosis with a reported 5-year survival rate of less than 30%. Although there are no established guidelines for the treatment of mucosal melanoma, immunotherapy has been increasingly used for the management of advanced mucosal melanoma.

Single Lower Border Plate Fixation In Anterior Mandibular Fractures, Ted Park, Kathleen Lopez, D Nguyen, Mark Martin

Repair of symphyseal and parasymphyseal mandibular fractures is traditionally performed with a lower border plate and either an upper border microplate or arch bars as a tension band. Complications of microplates include wound dehiscence, plate exposure, and tooth root injury. Issues with arch bars include increased operative time, a second procedure for removal, risk of TMJ ankylosis, and risk of injury to the operative team. We propose that one lower border plate is adequate for simple fractures of the anterior mandible and will serve to minimize complications.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of irreversible vision loss in the elderly population in the United States and is more prevalent in post-menopausal females than age-matched males. There are no current FDA-approved therapies for dry AMD, which composes 80- 90% of all AMD cases. Late stage dry AMD (geographic atrophy) is characterized by extensive loss of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) along with degeneration of the photoreceptors, which cause significant central vision loss. Voice therapy has been suggested as the choice of treatment for patients with chronic cough. However, the voice aerodynamic parameters that may account for improvement in cough symptoms have not been well studied. The purpose of this study was to determine the changes in the aerodynamic parameters of phonation and self-ratings of cough severity following cough suppression therapy.

Primary Cutaneous Mucinous Carcinoma Treated With Micrographic Surgery, Cassandra Johnson, Vlatka Agnetta, Abel Torres

Primary mucinous carcinoma of the skin (PMCS) is a rare, slow growing tumor with a high recurrence rate and occasional metastasis. It most commonly presents as an asymptomatic nodule on the face, particularly the eyelids. PMCS is resistant to radiation and chemotherapy. Historically, a wide local excision has been the treatment of choice, but it has high recurrence rates. While no current definitive treatment guidelines are available, limited data suggests that Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) may result in significantly lower recurrence rates than excision. We report a case of recurrent PMCS treated with MMS.

Central Asian Problems of Modern Science and Education

It is investigated the dependence of intercapacitance between two point charges located in different environments on the relative position of border. The image method is used. It is considered two cases: the charges is located at line which is perpendicular to the border and the charges is located at line which is not perpendicular to the border. The result show that in both cases the capacitance is increased with displacement the border.

Background and aims: Mindfulness-based approaches, derived from centuries of eastern philosophy and practice, have been increasingly incorporated into western medicine. For example, data support the efficacy of mindfulness-based therapies to reduce stress and promote mental health. Methods: In this study, we briefly review models and approaches to sexual health in the context of considering compulsive sexual behavior disorder, describe mindfulness-based approaches to stress, addiction, and compulsive sexual behaviors, and present a Mindful Model of Sexual Health (MMSH) that incorporates elements of eastern and western philosophies. Bovine mammary gland biopsies allow researchers to collect tissue samples to study cell biology including gene expression, histological analysis, signaling pathways, and protein translation. This article describes two techniques for biopsy of the bovine mammary gland (MG). Three healthy Holstein dairy cows were the subjects. Before biopsies, cows were milked and subsequently restrained in a cattle chute. An analgesic (flunixin meglumine, 1.1 to 2.2 mg/kg of body weight) was administered via jugular intravenous [IV] injection 15-20 min prior to biopsy. For standing sedation, xylazine hydrochloride (0.01-0.05 mg/kg of body weight) was injected via the coccygeal vessels 5-10 min before the …

Sarcoidosis is a multisystem granulomatous disease of unknown origin. It typically involves the lungs and mediastinal lymph nodes in a chronic fashion. However, acute syndrome has been reported possibly in response to systemic release of proinflammatory cytokines. Acute pulmonary manifestations, especially acute respiratory failure or acute respiratory distress syndrome, remain extremely uncommon in individuals without a prior diagnosis. We present the case of a 41-year-old African American female, who presented with ARDS. An extensive workup into the cause of her illness remained negative, and she subsequently succumbed to her illness. A diagnosis of sarcoidosis was made upon autopsy, after exclusion …

Regional Economic Impact Of Small-Scale Pilgrimage Sites: Local Value Added By Small Sanctuaries In Rural Areas (Bavaria, Germany), Markus Hilpert

Today, pilgrimage is experiencing increasing interest, although the reasons for doing so are changing. Locations along pilgrim routes and popular sacred sites, normally profit economically, but to date, the regional economic effects of even very small pilgrimage sites are underexplored. Therefore, in this regard, this study examines two small-scale pilgrimage sites in Biberbach and Wigratzbad (both in Bavaria, Germany), using interviews and calculations. We find that even small pilgrimage sites can produce a notable increase in regional EVA and create jobs through local businesses.
