Is Current Fragile X Syndrome Counseling Enough? Expanding The Clinical Phenotype Of Fragile X In Premutation And Intermediate Allele Carriers, Zahra Saadat Girnary Jan 2018

Is Current Fragile X Syndrome Counseling Enough? Expanding The Clinical Phenotype Of Fragile X In Premutation And Intermediate Allele Carriers, Zahra Saadat Girnary

Theses and Dissertations

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is caused by a triplet repeat expansion on the FMR1 gene. Individuals with >200 repeats have FXS, while individuals between 45-54 and 55- 200 repeats have the FMR1 intermediate allele and premutation, respectively. FXS is characterized by autism and intellectual disability while the premutation is associated with fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS) and fragile X-associated primary ovarian insufficiency (FXPOI). However, recent research shows that the premutation may be associated with psychiatric manifestations. Currently, there are no established clinical features associated with the intermediate allele. This study sought to 1) study knowledge regarding FXTAS, FXPOI, as well …

Scientific Representation And Human Action, Brandon Boesch Jan 2018

Scientific Representation And Human Action, Brandon Boesch

Theses and Dissertations

Increasingly, many philosophers of science agree that an account of representation in science must include an irreducible reference to the intentions, actions, and agency of a scientist. Though these pragmatic accounts of scientific representation have numerous advantages over alternatives, very little has been said about the reference to agency found within. My dissertation uses work from the philosophy of action to fill in some of the missing details, offering a better foundation and more complete picture of the nature of representation in science. I begin with an overview of the literature in an encyclopedia article. I then argue for the …

Role Of Mir-489 In Her2 Positive Breast Cancer, Yogin Patel Jan 2018

Role Of Mir-489 In Her2 Positive Breast Cancer, Yogin Patel

Theses and Dissertations

Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2 or ErBb2) is a receptor tyrosine kinase overexpressed in 20-30% of breast cancers and associated with poor prognosis and outcome. Dysregulation of several micro RNAs (miRs) plays a key role in breast cancer progression and metastasis. In this study, we screened and identified miRs dysregulated in HER2-positive breast cancer cells. Molecular study demonstrated that miR-489 was specifically downregulated by the HER2-downstream signaling, especially the MAPK pathway. Restoration or overexpression of miR-489 in HER2-positive breast cancer cells significantly inhibited cell growth in vitro and decreased the tumorigenicity and tumor growth in xenograft mice. Mechanistically, …

The Importance Of Outcome Fairness: Revisiting The Role Of Distributive Justice, Kyle Mclean Jan 2018

The Importance Of Outcome Fairness: Revisiting The Role Of Distributive Justice, Kyle Mclean

Theses and Dissertations

Distributive justice, or the perceived fairness of outcomes, has played a minimal role in research into procedural justice and legitimacy in policing. However, allegations of racial bias that have contributed to the present legitimacy crisis in policing are more consistent with the concept of distributive justice than procedural justice. As such, the present study attempts to re-orient distributive justice within policing research. This study proposes that individuals infer the fairness of outcomes from the treatment that they receive from police officers. These judgments about outcome and treatment then combine to influence individuals’ perceptions of the legitimacy of police. In addition …

Mechanisms Of Rad51d-Dependent Repair Of Dna And Telomere Damage Induced By Interstrand Crosslinking Agents And Thiopurines, Nicole M. Reilly Jan 2018

Mechanisms Of Rad51d-Dependent Repair Of Dna And Telomere Damage Induced By Interstrand Crosslinking Agents And Thiopurines, Nicole M. Reilly

Theses and Dissertations

Mutations in homologous recombination (HR) genes increase genomic instability, an enabling characteristic of cancer. However, the status of these same genes can also determine chemotherapy outcomes. RAD51D is a breast and ovarian cancer susceptibility gene that is an important component of HR. Mammalian cells defective for RAD51D have extensive chromosomal aberrations and are more sensitive to the interstrand crosslink-inducing agent mitomycin C (MMC) and the thiopurine 6-thioguanine (6TG). Previously, the RNF138 E3 ubiquitin ligase was identified to promote RAD51D ubiquitination, and loss of RNF138 also increased cellular sensitivity to MMC. Ubiquitination assays were used to show that a 3-ubiquitin modification …

What Makes Killing For Organs Wrong? A Philosophical Defense Of The ‘Dead Donor’ Rule, Adam Omelianchuk Jan 2018

What Makes Killing For Organs Wrong? A Philosophical Defense Of The ‘Dead Donor’ Rule, Adam Omelianchuk

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of my dissertation is to give a philosophic defense of the so-called “dead donor” rule (DDR) in transplant ethics, something that is sorely lacking in the current literature on the topic. Part of my project is concerned with the rule’s correct formulation: What exactly does it forbid? I answer that it is primarily concerned with prohibiting the killing of the donor for his or her organs, and that it need not be concerned with requiring that the donor be dead before surgery begins (as important as that might be). What is morally important is that surgery not be …

The Sedimentary Record Of Eocene Deformation In The Interior Of The Southern Canadian Cordillera, Erica May Rubino Jan 2018

The Sedimentary Record Of Eocene Deformation In The Interior Of The Southern Canadian Cordillera, Erica May Rubino

Theses and Dissertations

Eocene sedimentary strata exposed in the interior of the southern Canadian Cordillera (SCC) in British Columbia (BC) and northernmost Washington (WA) record a poorly understood history of extension-related deformation in the hinterland of the orogen. Today these strata are exposed in isolated, distinct outcrop belts, although the nature of the original basin(s) is unknown. We examined 650 m of Eocene strata, analyzed 2,995 detrital zircons for uranium-lead (U-Pb) ages, and measured 67 detrital zircons for Hf isotope systematics in an effort to better understand the physiography of the SCC during this time period. Eocene strata consist of clast- and matrix-supported …

Synthesis Of Small-Molecule Fluorescent Probe And Polymers For Bioapplication: Bioimaging And Enzyme Stabilization, Yanmei Xu

Theses and Dissertations

In chapter one, we designed, synthesized and characterized two cysteine sensors CCPAP and CCPAN, with improved water solubility, cell penetration ability, and potential targeting selectivity. Two types of positive charged groups, i.e. triphenylphosphonium and pyridinium were introduced respectively to the frame structure CCP by coupling carboxylic acid with amine to improve the cell permeability and cysteine selectivity. ESI-MS, NMR and IR were employed to characterize the molecular structures of the two novel probes. These probes have better water solubility than the parent molecule DCP, and better cell penetration capability than CEP, which could further distinguish the cysteine concentration differences in …

Unlocking Piranesi’S Imaginary Prisons, Helen B. K. Marodin Jan 2018

Unlocking Piranesi’S Imaginary Prisons, Helen B. K. Marodin

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis aims to elucidate points that remain problematic in the scholarship of the imaginary prisons and to position Carceri d’Invenzione embedded in Piranesi’s evolving line of works. My focus was on Piranesi’s intellectual aspirations for the illustrations and the way in which they reflect Piranesi’s theoretical and philosophical inclinations. I was interested in finding a proper correlation between the illustrations of imaginary prisons and the artist’s intellectual development with the objective to provide the work with a coherent view in tandem with Piranesi’s modus operandi. I associated the imagery of the imaginary prisons and Piranesi’s references to specific places …

This study examines a problem of practice stemming from students not given the same opportunities to use and develop self-confidence and take on higher levels of responsibility in the classroom as they prepare for the 21st century workforce in our society. Recognizing a problem of practice evident in our high school with low-selfesteem in students, this paper studies the effects of implementing a peer-teaching instructional approach to help develop students’ self-confidence and emerging leadership skills (Lockie & Van Lanen, 2008). The central research question addressed in this study is: what is the impact of implementing a peer-teaching instructional approach on …

Efficient Design Optimization Methodology For Nonconventional Laminated Thin-Walled Composite Structures, Mazen Albazzan Jan 2018

Efficient Design Optimization Methodology For Nonconventional Laminated Thin-Walled Composite Structures, Mazen Albazzan

Theses and Dissertations

Structural designers seek the best possible design of a structure that optimally meets the requirements of a specific application. The measure of the quality of the final design can often be related to specific stiffness and strength of the structure. Because of their superior mechanical and environmental properties compared to traditional metals, fiberreinforced composite materials have earned a widespread acceptance for different structural applications. The tailoring potential of composites to achieve high specific stiffness and strength has promoted them as promising candidates for constructing lightweight structures. From that aspect, designers have tackled the problem of designing composite laminates, which is …

East Branch Of The Cooper River, 1780-1820: Panopticism And Mobility, Lisa Briggitte Randle Jan 2018

East Branch Of The Cooper River, 1780-1820: Panopticism And Mobility, Lisa Briggitte Randle

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years historical archaeologists have employed the panoptic plantation approach to examine issues of surveillance and control at plantations. Despite new scholarship in the area of the panoptic plantation, few studies place the enslaved laborer at the center and the planter-elite on the periphery. Failure to broaden the scope of studies that focus on enslaved laborers minimizes the importance of the differences in perception, cognition, and landscape between the planter-elite and the enslaved laborers. The aim of this study is to determine potential enslaved laborer mobility and how cognitive predictive models can aid in identifying potential locations for archaeological …

According to Lund (2007), energy sources can be divided into three main categories: fossil fuels, nuclear resources, and renewable energy sources. Renewable energy technologies are on the upward trend both residentially and commercially, with many studies being conducted to optimize its use. There are many opportunities that exists for Jamaica to utilize renewable sources as energy for generating electricity. Several sources, including the Ministry of Science, Technology, Energy, and Mining of Jamaica, states that the country sources just over 90 percent (90%) of its electricity capacity from petroleum-based power plants. Along with a high petroleum fuel source power-generation, the method …

An Axion Search With The Majorana Demonstrator, Clinton Gray Wiseman Jan 2018

An Axion Search With The Majorana Demonstrator, Clinton Gray Wiseman

Theses and Dissertations

The Majorana Demonstrator is an array of P-type point contact (PPC) germanium detectors enclosed in a multi-layered shield at the 4850’ level of the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Its primary goal is to search for the neutrinoless double beta decay of 76Ge. The initial 10 kg-y dataset, taken over a two year period, has energy thresholds as low as 1 keV. This allows concurrent rare event searches for the signatures of dark matter and solar axions in the low energy spectrum. Though the detectors are routinely operated with sub-keV energy thresholds, changing noise conditions in the array have made it …

Phylogeny, Ancestral Genome, And Disease Diagnoses Models Constructions Using Biological Data, Bing Feng Jan 2018

Phylogeny, Ancestral Genome, And Disease Diagnoses Models Constructions Using Biological Data, Bing Feng

Theses and Dissertations

Studies of bioinformatics develop methods and software tools to analyze the biological data and provide insight of the mechanisms of biological process. Machine learning techniques have been widely used by researchers for disease prediction, disease diagnosis, and bio-marker identification. Using machine-learning algorithms to diagnose diseases has a couple of advantages. Besides solely relying on the doctors’ experiences and stereotyped formulas, researchers could use learning algorithms to analyze sophisticated, high-dimensional and multimodal biomedical data, and construct prediction/classification models to make decisions even when some information was incomplete, unknown, or contradictory. In this study, first of all, we built an automated computational …

Aporetic Rhetoric: The Use Of Uncertainty In Healthcare Contexts, Adam S. Lerner

Theses and Dissertations

This project examines how uncertainty is rhetorically deployed in healthcare contexts. Investigating four major healthcare contexts, I study how different forms of uncertainty produce distinct rhetorical effects and consequences. In Chapter 1, I explore how the haphazard use of Agent Orange during the Vietnam war makes it difficult for veterans to prove their exposure to this deadly chemical. In Chapter 2, I examine the rhetorical strategies of mental illness skeptics and denialists, looking at how each deploys uncertainty in different and related ways. In Chapter 3, I investigate the intersection between design, emotion, and uncertainty as it appears in the …

Translating Slavery As Told To My Daughter, Victoria L.A. Carvelli Jan 2018

Translating Slavery As Told To My Daughter, Victoria L.A. Carvelli

Theses and Dissertations

I am translating an excerpt of the work L’esclavage raconté à ma fille, by the French Guianese politician Christiane Taubira. A former Minister of Justice of France, Taubira is famous for her legislative work in recognizing slavery as a crime against humanity and instituting national educational efforts on the subject. The book is an exposition of the history of slavery, set in a storytelling, question-and-answer style, which has the merit of bringing a conversational and accessible aspect to a difficult topic.

I chose this work at the recommendation of one of my professors, and when I was unable to find …

The Effect Of Neighborhood Characteristics And Acculturation On Vegetable Intake Among U.S. Hispanics, Anna Victoria Mesa

Theses and Dissertations

The growing prevalence of chronic disease among the U.S. Hispanic population has drawn increasing attention to modifiable behaviors such as diet in an effort to curb the burden of disease among this population. While factors affecting dietary intake among U.S. Hispanics have been largely studied, this study broadens the scope of existing analyses from examining the role of individual-level factors, including acculturation, to also include environmental factors such as neighborhood ethnic composition. Multilevel mixed modeling was employed to test the interaction of individual acculturation with neighborhood ethnic composition to predict vegetable intake among a sample of U.S. Hispanics. Individuals who …

The Imagination In Reason: Reframing The Systematic Core Of Idealism In Kant And Hegel, Gerad Gentry Jan 2018

The Imagination In Reason: Reframing The Systematic Core Of Idealism In Kant And Hegel, Gerad Gentry

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I argue that the point of transition between Kant and the Idealists is most aptly identified and comprehended when we bring into view a careful understanding of Kant’s principle of the free lawfulness of the Imagination. I argue that for Hegel, it was this principle that constituted Kant’s “greatest service to philosophy.” I contend that we are right to agree with Hegel that this principle is fundamental to Kant’s critical Idealism and is an important theoretical principle in its own right. More than this, though, Hegel adopts, modifies, and expands this notion and thereby turns it into …

Bankruptcy Schedules Will Not Be Treated As Judicial Admissions In Court, Charles Akinboyewa Jr. Jan 2018

Bankruptcy Schedules Will Not Be Treated As Judicial Admissions In Court, Charles Akinboyewa Jr.

Bankruptcy Research Library

(Exceprt)

When an individual debtor files for bankruptcy, it must file bankruptcy schedules listing, among other things, the creditors that hold claims against the individual. The information contained on the schedules may have ramifications on the debtor and its creditors. Specifically, often debtors unknowingly fail to list certain claims, which may affect the debtor’s right to discharge a creditor’s right to a recovery. Part I of this memo discusses bankruptcy schedules and claim dischargeability. Part II illustrates the distinction between judicial and evidentiary admissions. Part III explores cases that have held bankruptcy schedules to be admissions and others that have …

Bankruptcy Tourism: How A Comi Change Can Serve As Ammunition In Debt Wars, Taylor Anderson Jan 2018

Bankruptcy Tourism: How A Comi Change Can Serve As Ammunition In Debt Wars, Taylor Anderson

Bankruptcy Research Library

(Excerpt)

In general, Chapter 15 of title 11 of the United States Code (the “Bankruptcy Code”) provides a mechanism to recognize a “foreign proceeding.” Upon recognition of a foreign proceeding, the foreign representative will be allowed to sue and be sued in the United States. However, Chapter 15 distinguishes between “foreign main proceedings” and “foreign nonmain proceedings.” Upon recognition of a “foreign main proceeding” section 1520 of the Bankruptcy Code provides for certain automatic relief, including an automatic stay of proceedings against the debtor in the United States. There is no automatic relief conferred upon recognition of a foreign nonmain …

A Chapter 7 Trustee’S Qualified Right Of Immunity May Be No Shield For Intentional, Negligent, Or Grossly Negligent Conduct: Analyzing And Applying The Three-Way Circuit Split, Nataniel E. Arabov Jan 2018

A Chapter 7 Trustee’S Qualified Right Of Immunity May Be No Shield For Intentional, Negligent, Or Grossly Negligent Conduct: Analyzing And Applying The Three-Way Circuit Split, Nataniel E. Arabov

Bankruptcy Research Library

(Excerpt)

Quasi-judicial immunity is best understood as a blessing and a curse. A bankruptcy trustee is appointed to act as trustee through an order of the bankruptcy court. In Antoine v. Byers & Anderson, the Supreme Court provided a two-part test to analyze how far judicial immunity extends to persons who perform quasi-judicial functions in connection with their appointment. This test explains whether a judicial appointee is absolutely immune from personal liability to the estate or others. Under the test, a court (1) must decide whether the functions of the individual were historically adjudicative in nature, and (2) must …

Balancing Principles Of Cooperation And Public Policy In Applying Comity, Kristen Barone Jan 2018

Balancing Principles Of Cooperation And Public Policy In Applying Comity, Kristen Barone

Bankruptcy Research Library

(Excerpt)

Comity is a common law legal principle that allows U.S. courts to afford deference to foreign judgments. Comity is utilized as a basis for granting extraterritorial effect to judgments of foreign courts. This principle plays an integral role in a number of cross-border bankruptcy proceedings and has been adopted as a predominate legal principal in the Model Law on Cross-Border Insolvency (the “Model Law”), promulgated by the United Nation’s Commission on International Trade, and Chapter 15 of title 11 of the United States Code (the “Bankruptcy Code”).

Although American courts have long recognized the need to extend comity to …
