No Additional Benefit Of Foam Rolling Or Dynamic Stretching To Vertical Jump Performance Beyond A General Aerobic Warm-Up In Collegiate Athletes, Benjamin Saaribovre Jan 2018

No Additional Benefit Of Foam Rolling Or Dynamic Stretching To Vertical Jump Performance Beyond A General Aerobic Warm-Up In Collegiate Athletes, Benjamin Saaribovre

Theses and Dissertations

This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of four warm-up protocols on explosive strength in a vertical jump performance in collegiate athletes. Fifty-two NCAA Division 1 athletes (aged 20.3 ± 1.53 years, range: 18-23 years, Height 183.83 cm. ± 11.49 cm., Weight 81.85 kg. ± 17.56 kg., BMI 24.18 ± 3.64) performed each of the four randomly ordered warm-up protocols prior to performing both the squat jump (SJ) and countermovement jump (CMJ) tests, with each warm-up and subsequent jump tests performed at the same time of day spaced 1-week apart. The four warm-up protocols were: (a) general aerobic (run/walk) (AERO); …

American Indian Biculturalism Inventory - Pueblo, Royleen J. Ross Jan 2018

American Indian Biculturalism Inventory - Pueblo, Royleen J. Ross

Theses and Dissertations

A time in American history existed when Native Americans were not allowed to express, much less retain their traditions, culture, language, and livelihood. Today, Natives are thriving in various fields at many different professional levels and have not only mastered majority culture’s ways, but have integrated them, on their own terms, into their lives. Warfare was declared upon Native Americans in the educational arena beginning in the late 1800’s, resulting in many indigenous individuals not only meeting the educational challenge posed to them, but excelled beyond expectation. Thus, in contemporary society, many Native Americans have retained their traditional ways and …

Review Of Genetic And Maternal Effects On Tsd In Reptiles And Identification Of Population Differentiation In Putative Tsd Genes In Chelydra Serpentina, Danielle Roush Jan 2018

Review Of Genetic And Maternal Effects On Tsd In Reptiles And Identification Of Population Differentiation In Putative Tsd Genes In Chelydra Serpentina, Danielle Roush

Theses and Dissertations

Variation in sex ratio among clutches of eggs from different females is common in reptiles with TSD, but the mechanisms that cause this variation are unknown. In an effort to shed light on these mechanisms, we first critically review literature that examines variation in temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) within species. Genetic variation in TSD and maternal effects on TSD are two major mechanisms that have received attention. We outline the types of experiments and data required to demonstrate that a) genetic variation, b) maternally derived steroids, or c) both factors influence variation in sex ratio among clutches. Next, we compare …

Evaluation Of Movements And Habitat Use Of Suburban Striped Skunks (Mephitis Mephitis) In The Northern Great Plains To Inform Rabies Management, Anna Schneider Jan 2018

Evaluation Of Movements And Habitat Use Of Suburban Striped Skunks (Mephitis Mephitis) In The Northern Great Plains To Inform Rabies Management, Anna Schneider

Theses and Dissertations

Few studies have investigated the ecology of urban striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis) despite their role as a primary rabies vector species paired with an ability to thrive in these landscapes. Our aim was to obtain baseline ecological information with an emphasis on spatial ecology of urban striped skunks in the Northern Great Plains region that is missing in the literature. This information, such as home range, nightly movements, habitat selection, and denning behavior is important for informing rabies management decisions such as the placement of oral rabies vaccine (ORV) baits. We used radio telemetry equipment to track 22 (4M, 18 …

The Effects Of 27-Hydroxycholesterol And Palmitic Acid On Parkinson's Disease-Like Pathology, Jared Schommer Jan 2018

The Effects Of 27-Hydroxycholesterol And Palmitic Acid On Parkinson's Disease-Like Pathology, Jared Schommer

Theses and Dissertations

Synucleinopathies is the overarching term used to describe a group of neurodegenerative disorders characterized by aggregates of α-synuclein (α-syn) protein in the cytoplasm of neurons, nerve fibers, and glial cells. The cause(s) for synucleinopathies are likely multi-factorial with genetic predisposition and environmental factors participating in the pathogenesis of the diseases. Dietary factors including dyslipidemia of cholesterol, its metabolites, and fatty acids have shown conflicting results as risk factors in recent years. Our overarching hypothesis is that dietary factors including 27-Hydroxycholesterol (27-OHC) and Palmitic Acid (PA) can affect key proteins involved in synucleinopathies.

Findings regarding risk related specifically to dietary cholesterol …

Implementation Of Computational Resources Focusing On Forecast Model Access For Universities, Timothy Wayne See Jr Jan 2018

Implementation Of Computational Resources Focusing On Forecast Model Access For Universities, Timothy Wayne See Jr

Theses and Dissertations

This research combines recent technological advances (i.e. Docker software containers, and cloud computing) in conjunction with the WRF model to create a portable NWP educational module. Incorporating the educational module into a senior level numerical methods course at the University of North Dakota allowed for analysis of the economic, policy, and privacy issues associated with using new software/tools. It also allowed for documentation of the benefits of tool usage within the classroom, both positive and negative. Use of these new tools also allowed for greater computational power to be accessed within the university computer labs. While the university labs were …

Plastic Properties Of High Performance Self-Compacting Concrete, Kyle Seidler Jan 2018

Plastic Properties Of High Performance Self-Compacting Concrete, Kyle Seidler

Theses and Dissertations

As the world becomes more complex and people become more evolved the desire to build taller building and design more complex structures is on the rise. The major problem that occurs with larger structures are the forces associated with building bigger. One way to help solve the problem of large stresses in concrete structures is to include more reinforcing steel and design more complex reinforcing configurations. The down side to increasing the amount of reinforcing steel is that the steel creates smaller gaps for the concrete to flow through. This problem was realized in the early 1980’s and the concept …

More than 60 million Americans experience devastating one-two punches to their health -- they have inadequate access to basic health care while also enduring the effects of discrimination, poverty, and dangerous environments that accelerate higher rates of illness. Innovative and evidence-based social strategies can improve health care and lead to broad gains in the health of our entire society.
