International Cybertorts: Expanding State Accountability In Cyberspace, Rebecca Crootof

States are not being held accountable for the vast majority of their harmful cyberoperations, largely because classifications created in physical space do not map well onto the cyber domain. Most injurious and invasive cyberoperations are not cybercrimes and do not constitute cyberwarfare, nor are states extending existing definitions of wrongful acts permitting countermeasures to cyberoperations (possibly to avoid creating precedent restricting their own activities). Absent an appropriate label, victim states have few effective and nonescalatory responsive options, and the harms associated with these incidents lie where they fall.

This explorative/descriptive study investigates veterans’ stories of substance use/misuse, recovery, and moral injury. 12 male veterans participated in semi-structured interviews and answered questions about how their motivations for substance use/misuse and recovery changed prior to, during, and after their military service. Participants were also asked if they experienced moral injury while in the military, and if this precipitated or motivated substance use/misuse. The purpose of this study was to determine how the military impacts a veteran’s substance use/misuse and recovery. Qualitative research on moral injury is minimal, and this study aimed to address that gap in the literature. The study …

This thesis takes a sensory-historical approach to the 1836 Siege and Battle of the Alamo, its inscription into history and its propagation as a touchstone of Texas’ memory and identity. My focus is on the auditory, an especially important sensory experience to consider. Among the many auditory tactics deployed during the siege, the storming itself took place in the pre-dawn darkness, and many of the survivors’ accounts were from women and children among the garrison, who were sequestered away from the visual experience of the battle. Being labelled as qualifying for special assistance simply by being a Black male is common, as with five Black males at my professional educational institution. This study elicits the voices of these Black males in such areas as their personal perception of academic achievement, school improvement needs, and staff misunderstandings of Black males. Because this research elicits voices of Black males missing from the current research literature (Howard, 2014), the participant researcher decided to use these ethnographic accounts to glimpse into the minds and schooling experiences of these students. This essay examines novel threats to peace – social and political threats as well as military and technological. It worries that familiar conceptions of state sovereignty cannot sustain a legal order capable of meeting those threats, not even if we understand sovereignty as responsibility to protect human rights. The essay tentatively proposes that recent efforts to reformulate state sovereignty as responsibility to humanity – ‘R2H’ for short – offer a better hope. Of the more than 3 million Americans who deployed to Southeast Asia during the United States' involvement in the Vietnamese civil war, only some 7,500 were women. Thus, it seems reasonable that memoirs, novels, and film would privilege the male experience when remembering the Vietnam War. Yet in the aftermath of South Vietnam's collapse, Americans' memory of the war narrowed even further, equating the conflict as a whole to the male combat veteran's story. The Other Women’S Movement: Analyzing Women’S Support For Populist-Radical Right Parties And Candidates, Katelyn Schwiderski

This study seeks to answer the question of why women vote for populist-radical right (PRR) parties or candidates, which are often depicted as uniquely sexist “men’s parties.” Using survey data from the 2014 European Social Survey (ESS Round 7), a binary logistic regression analyzes the relationship between PRR attitudes, individual demographic characteristics, and the probability of expressing affinity with a PRR party. This study ultimately finds that women who hold a traditional gender ideology and strong populist anti-elite views are more likely than other women to support a PRR party. Indian tribes, in the context of US. constitutional theory, do not fit. They are an anomaly in American governmental structure. Tribal governments exist today within the constitutional framework of the United States only by virtue of acrobatic displays of rhetorical legal reasoning and mythologized interpretations of history. Originalist theory can provide a clear exit from the inconsistencies and inaccuracies underlying the foundation of federal Indian law. This thesis reconstructs the lives of two elite Hispanic New Mexican men who grappled with upheavals on the North American continent during the nineteenth century. Union army officers and influential patrones Nicolás Pino (1820-1896) and José Francisco Chavez (1833-1904) serve as the center of this paper’s narrative chronological historical analysis. Intensive primary source work in the New Mexico State Archives reveals their footprints in the military, political, and legal spheres before, during, and after the war. Measurements of underwater acoustic signals were made on a bottom-mounted horizontal line array during the Seabed Characterization Experiment (SBCEX) in the New England Mud Patch south of Martha’s Vineyard in about 70 m of water. The signals were generated by Signals, Underwater Sound (SUS) charges detonated at various locations in the experimental area at a depth of 18 m, during nearly-isovelocity conditions. The broadband signals were analyzed for modal arrival time and amplitude using time-frequency techniques. Ratios of modal amplitudes at the individual hydrophones were used to estimate the modal attenuation coefficients. Hence, these estimates are independent of any uncertainty …

The research develops a methodology for evaluating and quantifying such damage using non-destructive imaging technologies, and develops a prediction equation for compressive residual strength of the damaged composite structure.

Experiments and imaging of Cyply 1002 glass-fiber/epoxy laminate panels were conducted at the University of Rhode Island (URI) and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division, Newport (NUWCDIVNPT), respectively. Military veterans are exposed to unique stressors (e.g., combat) that can precipitate the onset of various mental health problems. Morally compromising combat experiences have recently gained empirical and clinical attention, following the increased rates of mental health problems observed in Afghanistan and Iraq veterans. The current investigation aimed to assess the relationship between these morally compromising experiences and various mental health outcomes. Further, it examined the potential protective role of self-compassion in these relationships. Specifically, moderation analyses were conducted to evaluate the interaction between exposure to and intensity of morally compromising experiences and self-compassion on various mental health outcomes.
