Much of the educational research that has investigated the attitudes of pre-service elementary educators towards science has seemed to show that their attitudes are negative towards science. Research also indicates that factors of gender, perceived competence, anxiety, perceived relation to their lives, and epistemological beliefs are related to pre-service elementary educators’ attitudes towards science. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between epistemological beliefs of undergraduate elementary education majors at a large, private, faith-based university in the southeastern United States and their attitudes towards science. Hydrothermal Crystal Growth Of Tetrahedral Framework Oxides For Optical Applications, Rylan James Terry

In our modern world, lasers are used every day, from the mundane task of playing a DVD to the innovative implementation of laser surgery. Nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals are crucial to laser technology for their ability to modify the frequency of a beam. The development of new NLO crystals is necessary for the advancement of laser technology, in order to reach wavelengths that are not currently accessible due to the limitations of current materials. Of particular importance to semiconductor photolithography, laser micromachining, and scientific instrumentation are the ultra-violet (UV, 200 nm > λ > 400 nm) and deep-UV (λ < 200 nm) portions of the optical spectrum. This dissertation delves into the synthesis of new potential NLO materials by means of hydrothermal crystal growth. In this study, tetrahedral oxides are utilized due to their likelihood of producing noncentrosymmetric (NCS) crystals, a necessity for NLO materials. Silicates are also employed in this study due to their particularly deep absorption edge into the UV. The addition of a spectroscopically silent rare earth ion which is capable of being doped with a lasing ion into a NCS crystal may lead to a single crystal that is both capable of lasing and frequency doubling. In the pursuit of such a crystal, the novel syntheses of Cs3YSi6O15 and LiRESiO4 (RE = Er, Tm, Yb, Lu) were established. Although these materials proved not to be NCS, their structures proved very intriguing and in the case of Cs3YSi6O15 is the parent structure to a family of structures that otherwise exhibits structural disorder or modulation. In expanding the range of mixed oxoanion species, the rare earth ion was replaced with a tetrahedral trivalent oxoanion. The appeal of a series with the general formula ABCO4, (A = alkali ion, B = trivalent metal, and C = tetravalent metal) is its prevalence to produce NCS crystals, notably having a tridymite-type framework. Tridymite is a high temperature variant of quartz that forms six-membered rings propagating through the structure, creating vacant channels. In a stuffed variation of this structural type, rings having negative charge are balanced by the “stuffing” of an alkali or alkaline earth cation into the vacant channels. While the archetype of the stuffed tridymites forms in the centrosymmetric (CS) space group setting of P63/mmc, there are four degrees of freedom that evolve as small variations in the structure are made, often leading to the removal of the inversion center. With the synthesis of a wide array of crystals in this family, those that were found to be NCS were analyzed for their potential use as NLO materials.

The smart nation drive is an effort by the government to co-create innovative, people-centric solutions with citizens and businesses. The three priority areas, underpinned by cyber security, are elderly, transportation and data. Since then, various digital strategies and policies have been further articulated, and digital programmes and projects implemented in the country.

Destruction of cultural heritage sites and museums in the Middle East has become increasingly prevalent in the recent decades. This thesis aims to unravel the causes for these violent acts. It uses a socio-historical perspective of how culture, religion, and politics have polarized people and contributed to the ruination. Three museums are examined through a scope of progressive violence: The Kuwait National Museum, The National Museum of Iraq and the National Museum of Afghanistan. Two vanadium(V) complexes were prepared for different projects. First the ONS tridentate ligand 14 was prepared according to literature procedure. This ligand was chosen to make the ONS dioxovanadium complex 15 for conjugation to a protein and to eventually elicit catalytic antibodies for the hydrolysis of the chemical weapon VX. Complex 15 was prepared in 65% overall yield and a full characterization was performed including X-ray diffraction. Initial screening performed at the Naval Research Laboratory indicated an IC50 of 84 nM for inhibition of a bacterial cholinesterase. It was also found to be 50% as effective as the control antiobiotic …

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of conflict on the sociopolitical status of women in several affected countries. The conflicts analyzed within this work are both violent and non-violent. I infer that conflict acts as an impetus to propel gender equity. I utilize the Global Gender Gap Index (GGGI) dataset to determine which movements in women’s equality have been made over the preceding twelve years and reinforce that data analysis with qualitative information through case analysis to add context and meaning to the quantitative findings.

At the beginning of World War I, the only military working dogs the United States owned were sled dogs. In comparison, European nations in World War I used canines as sentries, messengers, ambulance, and draft dogs. In 1942, members of the American public, created Dogs for Defense Inc. to help recruit dogs for military use. By the end of the Vietnam War, dogs no longer were donated by the American public for use, rather the American military owned the dogs they deployed.

The United States infrastructure, e.g. roads and bridges, are in a critical condition. Inspection, monitoring, and maintenance of these infrastructure in the traditional manner can be expensive, dangerous, time-consuming, and tied to human judgment (the inspector). Non-contact methods can help overcoming these challenges. In this dissertation two aspects of non-contact methods are explored: inspections using unmanned aerial systems (UASs), and conditions assessment using image processing and machine learning techniques. This presents a set of investigations to determine a guideline for remote autonomous bridge inspections.

Archaeologists describe the Uinta Fremont (A.D. 0 – 1300) as a mixed foraging-farming society that underwent a dramatic social change from A.D. 700 – 1000. Researchers observe through different architectural styles and subsistence activity a change from large, aggregated settlements to more dispersed and defensively oriented villages and hamlets. The Ideal Free Distribution (IFD) model provides an explanatory framework through which to interpret these changes. The story of the rural soldiers and militiamen of Virginia that served in the American Revolution remains open to historical research and exploration. Recent scholarship of Virginia’s military contribution to the Revolution focuses heavily on relationships of power among social groups that operated within the colony’s hierarchy, concluding that a lack of white, lower-class political and economic representation disabled mobilization among the Old Dominion’s more settled regions. My study emphasizes the revolutionary backcountry’s story by using Fauquier County, Virginia as a case study.

Aerially-deployed plastic landmines in post-conflict nations present unique detection and disposal challenges. Their small size, randomized distribution during deployment, and low-metal content make these mines more difficult to identify using traditional methods of electromagnetic mine detection. Perhaps the most notorious of these mines is the Sovietera PFM-1 “butterfly mine,” widely used during the decade-long Soviet-Afghan conflict between 1979 and 1989. Predominantly used by the Soviet forces to block otherwise inaccessible mountain passages, many PFM-1 minefields remain in place due to the high associated costs of access and demining. This thesis focuses on several works of art created by Diego Rivera for United States patrons in the early twentieth century. Although these U.S. art patrons and Rivera supported the idea of hemispheric unity, the artist’s viewpoint did not always concur with that of the state-side capitalists. Rivera wished to use Pan-American iconography to idealize the indigenous cultures of Latin America, specifically Mexico. The United States capitalists wanted to use art patronage of Latin American artists to instigate a new brand of imperialism – American Imperialism. The prohibition against non-consensual human experimentation has long been considered sacrosanct. It traces its legal roots to the Nuremberg trials although the ethical foundations dig much deeper. It prohibits all forms of medical and scientific experimentation on non-consenting individuals. The prohibition against non-consensual human experimentation is now well established in both national and international law.

U.S. covert action from the 1950s onward was shaped, in part, by the success a CIA-orchestrated coup d'état in which the United States deposed the popular Iranian nationalist Mohammed Mossadegh. Ordered by president Eisenhower, the coup in Iran set the precedent for utilizing covert action as a means of achieving State goals. In so doing, President Eisenhower overturned the precedent set by his immediate predecessor, President Truman: that is, the precedent of using the CIA in its intended function, gathering and evaluating intelligence.
