A Survey Of Youtube Video Resources For Helping Beginner Clarinetists Cross The Register Break, Flora Newberry
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The internet is currently a much-used source of information for instruction and pedagogical information among students and teachers. The importance of the internet, specifically video instruction, in the dissemination of pedagogical information, combined with its largely unevaluated body of information, calls for serious study and consideration. It is necessary for the teaching community to understand the impact these resources have on teaching and learning, and how internet video resources can benefit teachers and students. This survey compares current video resources on YouTube for helping beginner clarinet players cross the clarinet register break, to the traditional print resources that make up …

Inferior Vena Cava Filters (Ivcfs): A Review Of Uses And Application To International Guidelines At A Single Australian Center; Implications Of Venous Thromboembolism Associated With Malignancy, Philip Craven, Ciara Daly, Randall Oates, Nisha Sikotra, Tim Clay, Eli Gabbay
Medical Papers and Journal Articles
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a potentially lethal event. Anticoagulation is the cornerstone of treatment. Inferior vena cava filters (IVCFs) may be used in circumstances when anticoagulation is contraindicated or as an adjunct to anticoagulation. IVCF use is not without controversy due to concerns over their safety profile, differences in guidelines from international societies, and a limited randomized control trial evidence. We retrospectively undertook a review of IVCF use over a three-year period (2014–2016) at our center, which has a large oncology service but no trauma unit. There were 44 patients with successful IVCF insertion and one patient with an unsuccessful …
Encountering Statues: Object Oriented Ontology And The Figure In A Sculptural Practice, Lisa Osborn
Encountering Statues: Object Oriented Ontology And The Figure In A Sculptural Practice, Lisa Osborn
School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses
This study reappraises the role and value of statues (i.e. the figure as sculpture) in order to determine what happens when we encounter these objects. The consideration and construction of statues in my studio practice has generated specific insights into statues as person-shaped objects and into our encounter with these objects. From the perspective of a practice making statues this study addresses how, through the encounter, statues both stimulate and obscure our perceptions of them as objects. My practitioner’s understanding of statues is articulated and enlarged by developing methods which allowed me to gain an expanded perspective of my practice, …

Evaluating Appropriate Repertoire For Developing Singers: An African-American Art Song Anthology, Nicole Michelle Sonbert
Evaluating Appropriate Repertoire For Developing Singers: An African-American Art Song Anthology, Nicole Michelle Sonbert
Theses and Dissertations--Music
Finding appropriate and unique repertoire for the developing singer is a daunting task and ongoing challenge in the teaching profession. There are limited resources to help guide teachers in selecting varied, yet suitable repertoire that falls outside of the standard Western European musical canon. The early years, ages 17–21, are crucial to establishing a healthy and well-rounded vocal approach to singing, while also introducing the student to a wide variety of music. African-American art song is a great option for developing singers. Repertoire should allow a student to grow musically, vocally, and artistically according to the singer’s specific stage of …
Tyler Kline’S Render: A Formal Analysis And Performance Guide, John Douglas Handshoe
Tyler Kline’S Render: A Formal Analysis And Performance Guide, John Douglas Handshoe
Theses and Dissertations--Music
Since the 1950s, composers worldwide have explored the use of the trombone in new and exciting ways, from expanding the functional range of the instrument to creating unique timbres through the use of mutes and extended techniques. Since then, many standard works in the literature have been born from this pushing of the envelope from composers like John Cage, Luciano Berio, Iannis Xenakis, and Daniel Schnyder.
On the forefront of the newest crop of composers expanding the voice of the trombone is Tyler Kline (b. 1991). This project will function as a formal analysis and performer’s guide to his 2015 …
Writing Ix: Combining Theatre Arts And Public Policy Through The Process Of Playwriting, John Brahan
Writing Ix: Combining Theatre Arts And Public Policy Through The Process Of Playwriting, John Brahan
Honors Theses
This thesis explores the process of writing a play and compares sexual misconduct policies at universities in the Southeastern Conference. It exhibits the process through examining writing exercises to develop character and plot, showing expanded understanding of dramatic literature through reading additional plays, outlining the growth of the narrative through table readings, additional feedback, and displaying audience feedback garnered through an optional survey filled out by patrons at the end of their theatre experience. Throughout the narrative of the thesis, I explore how I developed each of Aristotle's Six Elements of Tragedy: character, plot, idea, language, music, and spectacle. The …
The Cinematic South: A Look Into The South According To Quentin Tarantino, Justin Tyler Necaise
The Cinematic South: A Look Into The South According To Quentin Tarantino, Justin Tyler Necaise
Honors Theses
This thesis examines the eight films directed by Quentin Tarantino. More specifically, it examines how Tarantino portrays the American South, southernness, and southerners throughout his filmography. I watched each film countless times, read each screenplay, and read many articles written about the films. I also read many biographies, and I watched many interviews with Quentin Tarantino. In this work, I find that Tarantino exploits the South in order to create much more despicable characters, which furthers the stereotype that the South is in some way lesser to the rest of the United States. The South according to Quentin Tarantino is …
Partnerships And Creation: A Brief History Of Clarinetist-Composer Partnerships And How They Contributed To Clarinet Literature, And The Influence Of Robert Spring On Contemporary Compositional Output For The Clarinet, Adria Leigh Sutherland
Theses and Dissertations--Music
Throughout the history of the clarinet, there have been performers who have inspired composers to write pieces specifically for them. These contributions to clarinet literature have been significant, frequently resulting in an overall shift in the expectations of performers’ abilities, and expanding the range of possibilities for composers. This document first describes the relationships of the following composers and clarinetists, and their resulting impact on clarinet literature: Karl Stamitz and Joseph Beer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Anton Stadler, Louis Spohr and Simon Hermstedt, Carl Maria von Weber and Heinrich Baermann, Johannes Brahms and Richard Mühlfeld, and the numerous commissions of …

Third Space, Hybridity, And Colonial Mimicry In Fugard's Blood Knot, Parvin Ghasemi, Samira Sasani, Fatereh Nemati
Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
Literature, as a branch of Humanities, has a significant role in demonstrating the problems and the realities of a society. Therefore, the literary texts written in South Africa, had a major role in the victory of people against the policy of Apartheid, according to which the whites were segregated from non-whites. Harold Athol Lanigan Fugard is one of the writers, who showed his hatred and dissatisfaction to the world, with his plays. He is known for his deeply rooted and controversial anti-apartheid plays. His Blood Knot (1961) has been chosen in this study, in which the negative implications of colonialism …

A Caucasian Utopia In Russian Literature And Politics: Alexander Griboedov And Iuri Tynianov, Ekaterina Dmitrieva
A Caucasian Utopia In Russian Literature And Politics: Alexander Griboedov And Iuri Tynianov, Ekaterina Dmitrieva
Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
The protagonists of my paper are the Russian writer and diplomat Alexander Griboedov, the author of the “Project for the Establishment of the Russian Caucasian Company,” which he considered, if one can believe some sources, the main achievement of his life. Approximately 100 years after the death of Griboedov, Iuri Tynianov wrote his fictionalized biography where all of the action revolves around the Caucasus Project, with which, according to Tynianov, Griboedov signed his own death sentence. Here the question naturally arises: why did Tynianov, forced, after the defeat of Formalism, to turn to fiction and literary heroes, shy away from …

A Survey To Investigate The Participation Of Female Jazz-Trained Instrumentalists At Waapa And In Perth’S Professional Music Scene, Talya Valenti
A Survey To Investigate The Participation Of Female Jazz-Trained Instrumentalists At Waapa And In Perth’S Professional Music Scene, Talya Valenti
Theses : Honours
Traditionally, men have dominated jazz music in terms of participation and professional acknowledgement, but even in present times, female instrumentalists remain under-represented in jazz performance and education. Various studies such as Kathleen M. McKeage’s Gender and Participation in Undergraduate Jazz Ensembles: A National Survey and Erin L. Wehr’s Understanding the Experiences of Women in Jazz: A Suggested Model, have produced statistics that illustrate the low participation of female instrumentalists in jazz, and have also provided social-psychological theories to explain why these patterns continue to prevail.
As a working jazz-trained female instrumentalist myself, I have noticed the under-representation of female jazz …
The Interaction Between Postminimalist Music And Contemporary Dance, Azariah Felton
The Interaction Between Postminimalist Music And Contemporary Dance, Azariah Felton
Theses : Honours
This dissertation examines the manner in which postminimalist compositional techniques such as phasing, polymeter, etc., can be used to aid the creation of music for dance. Music presented with dance generally serves at least two crucial roles: providing the dancers with a framework and impetus to aid movement; and reflecting the concept and meaning, where applicable, of the choreography. Many composers writing for dance must find ways to unite these goals in a way that best suits the total work, and find a balance between supporting the concept and assisting the dancers. This dissertation discusses the relationship between choreography and …
