In the age of increasing technology, it is important for writers, teachers, filmmakers and artists to understand how text, images, and graphics can be integrated together within a single medium. By examining multi-media books, hypertext and film, evidence of "montage theory" can be seen through many different mediums, suggesting that composition is an ever evolving, innovative activity which is dependent upon creativity and discovery within the mind of the reader. Students who experience montage theory can therefore be transformed from readers to viewers and designers, who ultimately shape their learning outcomes. The introduction of new publishing platforms like blogs into the world of sports journalism has forced journalists to modify their technique and approach to writing. This paper addresses that shift through examination of rhetorical theory, in-depth first-person research, and a culmination of rhetorical advantages for digitally publishing sports journalists. In the first section of this thesis, the author establishes the rhetorical act of blogging through the theoretical lenses of Mikhail Bakhtin and Mary Hocks while analyzing the sports blog, SB Nation. College composition courses have conventionally relied on alphabetic, print writing as the primary method for constructing meaning, but contemporary communication practices are increasingly multimodal and media-based (Palmeri, 2012; Yancey, 2011). While many teachers and scholars advocate that students benefit from engaging in the production of multimodal texts, fewer educators create digital and new media products themselves. Through a meta-analytical approach, this project explores the potentials that the act of design offers teacher-scholars for improving their pedagogy and practice. Judicial Conflicts And Voting Agreement: Evidence From Interruptions At Oral Argument, Kyle Rozema, Tonja Jacobi

This Article asks whether observable conflicts between judges in a case—interruptions between Supreme Court justices during oral arguments—are associated with future breakdowns in voting agreement among the judges in the case. To do so, we built a dataset containing justice-to-justice interruptions in cases between 1960 to 2015, and employ a framework for measuring case outcomes that treats the outcomes as a set of agreements and disagreements between pairs of justices. We find that on average a judicial pair is 7 percent less likely to vote together in a case for each interruption that occurs in the case between the judicial …

PSU’s program is unique in that it features a client-centered workshop project in place of a final thesis. For our workshop, we spent January through May of 2018 working with our client—the Cowlitz County Historic Preservation Program—to develop a Heritage Plan (Plan). Social Judgments Of Electronic Multitasking In The Workplace : The Role Of Contextual And Individual Difference Factors, Rushika De Bruin

The modern workplace has become dependent on technology use for day-to-day activities, with employees often engaging in electronic multitasking behaviors. Yet, little research has systematically explored how employees view these behaviors. The current set of studies investigated the influence of contextual and individual difference factors on observers' social judgments of electronic multitasking (i.e., rudeness, agency, and communalism) during work meetings using vignettes. Using a between-subjects experimental design, study 1 (N = 465), found no significant differences in social judgments based on the type of task switching behaviors (sequential vs. concurrent). the selection of modern Indian plays on the American market is very limited. In order to expand the available selection of texts for my classes, I decided to translate plays from Bengali and Hindi to English. The process included amongst other considerations negotiating the major roadblock of translating culture. This paper explores how cultural considerations with regard to one’s target audience affect the translation exercise and the perception of the translated text. This dissertation project seeks to address the sociological processes, dynamics, and mechanisms inflecting how and why U.S. society reproduces a sexually dimorphic, binary gender structure. The project builds upon the work of sociologists of gender on the doing gender framework, intersectional feminist approaches to identity formation, and hegemonic masculinity and relational theories of gender. In a 2012 article in Social Science and Medicine presenting contemporary concepts in gender theory to the health-oriented readers of the journal, R. W. Connell argues that much public policy on gender and health relies on categorical understandings of gender that are now inadequate. Connell contends …

Independent craft breweries contributed approximately $68 billion to the national economy last year. However, an arcane regulatory scheme governs the alcohol industry in general and the craft beer industry specifically, posing both obstacles and benefits to independent craft brewers. This Essay examines regulations that arguably infringe on free speech: namely, commercial speech regulations that prohibit alcohol manufacturers from purchasing advertising space from retailers. Such regulations were enacted to prohibit undue influence and anticompetitive behavior stemming from vertical and horizontal integration in the alcohol market. Medical Celebrity in Eighteenth-Century Britain argues that the cultural mechanisms responsible for creating and sustaining celebrity culture helped create and sustain commercialized medicine in eighteenth-century Britain. I identify the process by which celebrity and medical culture impact one another as a sociocultural phenomenon that I term medical celebrity. The following chapters present four case studies of how medical celebrity impacted the development of the medical profession, the medical market, cultural representations and perceptions of health and illness, and the patient experience. This thesis recounts my experiences during West Virginia University's Fall 2017 Production of Topdog/Underdog as the role Booth. The purpose of my thesis role was to utilize the training I received during my tenure at WVU, allow myself to be emotionally vulnerable, while sustaining my artistry within a 2-hour 2-person play. Utilizing Linklater, Meisner, and Chekhovian techniques proved fruitful in expanding my range as an actor. Ultimately, the results culminated into artistic, mental, and personal growth that has and will continue to broaden my capabilities as an actor.
