The Creation Of Traditional African Dance/Music Integrated Scores, Doris Green
The Creation Of Traditional African Dance/Music Integrated Scores, Doris Green
Journal of Movement Arts Literacy Archive (2013-2019)
African dances are among the oldest dance traditions in existence; their structure is uniquely different because the movement therein is inseparable from the music that governs the movements. The music is associated with the spoken language of the people, which makes it virtually impossible for outsiders to comprehend the music of different African countries. In Africa there is no dance that is not accompanied by some form of music from the voice to orchestras of different percussive instruments. For centuries the dance/music of African people has been passed between generations by a mouth to ear process. Any society that is …

Music And Conflict Resolution: Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, Teresa L. Enyart
Music And Conflict Resolution: Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, Teresa L. Enyart
Masters Theses
Music in relation to peace and conflict, whether constructive or destructive, has had deep and profound effects that unite people based on commonality and shared interest. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is no different when it comes to these two dichotomies. There are those who use music for protest to either escalate conflict or use it as a social and political platform. Then, there are those who use music for resolving their differences, to promote peacemaking and peacebuilding, further unifying and embracing the diversity that’s between them. The ethnographic approach that I took in this research gives insight and a perspective to …
Contextualizing Worship And Music In A Multicultural Church: A Case Study At Christ Fellowship Miami, Kimberly A. Martin
Contextualizing Worship And Music In A Multicultural Church: A Case Study At Christ Fellowship Miami, Kimberly A. Martin
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Christ Fellowship Church is a Southern Baptist, multicultural, multigenerational, and multilingual church with eight local campuses, which hosts worshipers from seventy-six nations every weekend in Miami-Dade County. While the worshiping body of Christ Fellowship Miami is extremely diverse, the music and worship genres and styles are predominantly homogeneous. This case study serves the worship ministry at Christ Fellowship Miami as they seek to engage in more culturally conscious methods of worship and music by exploring the diverse cultures, languages, and music styles represented in the congregation. It discusses the planning, development, and execution of a global worship experience at the …
Bali’S “Forgotten Stepchild”: The Cultural And Sonic Vitality Of The Balinese Rebab, Mikaela Marget
Bali’S “Forgotten Stepchild”: The Cultural And Sonic Vitality Of The Balinese Rebab, Mikaela Marget
Lawrence University Honors Projects
The rebab is one of the only traditional stringed instruments found on the island of Bali, Indonesia. Though it is ever-present in musical ensembles in Bali, the rebab has been consistently overlooked in scholarship of Balinese music by Western ethnomusicologists. Through participant observation, personal interviews, and library research, I explore the idea that the rebab deserves a place in the scholarship of Balinese music. In addition, I argue that the Balinese rebab not only persists in Balinese music culture as a vital object, but that it is also an active participant in shaping Balinese music culture. In this paper, I …
Are The Youngsters Taking Over?: The Second Modernity And The Digital Generation, Raul Pertierra
Are The Youngsters Taking Over?: The Second Modernity And The Digital Generation, Raul Pertierra
Social Transformations Journal of the Global South
We are currently entering a new cultural phase. While it is difficult to predict exactly its important features, a major component is the increasing youthification of culture. In an age of digital and limitless reproduction, the youth provide the most appropriate images for this cultural phase. What has brought this cultural shift about and what are its implications for society and culture? Why are the new technologies of communication so attractive to the young? Is an increase in agency for its users the main attraction? Is this agentic increase “real” and authentic or does it lead its users into a …
Music Is The "Noise Of Remembering" Tracing The Origins, Influences, And Connectivities Of West African Music, Adam Friedman
Music Is The "Noise Of Remembering" Tracing The Origins, Influences, And Connectivities Of West African Music, Adam Friedman
Lawrence University Honors Projects
The popularity and universal reach of music genres such as Jazz and Hip Hop attest to the idea that these forms have been long established as a vital part of global musical culture. For people who are familiar with Afrocentric music, it is clear that styles such as Jazz and Hip Hop are rooted in, and inextricably linked with, African culture and history. What is more difficult to make sense of, however, is how and why transplanted African culture came to have such wide reaching impact in the new contexts in which it was taken up – because the stories …
Santería In A Globalized World: A Study In Afro-Cuban Folkloric Music, Nathan Montgomery
Santería In A Globalized World: A Study In Afro-Cuban Folkloric Music, Nathan Montgomery
Lawrence University Honors Projects
The Yoruban people of modern-day Nigeria worship many deities called orichas by means of singing, drumming, and dancing. Their aurally preserved artistic traditions are intrinsically connected to both religious ceremony and everyday life. These forms of worship traveled to the Americas during the colonial era through the brutal transatlantic slave trade and continued to evolve beneath racist societal hierarchies implemented by western European nations. Despite severe oppression, Yoruban slaves in Cuba were able to disguise orichas behind Catholic saints so that they could still actively worship in public. This initial guise led to a synthesis of religious practice, language, and …
Steve Reich's ‘Music For 18 Musicians’ As A Soundscape Composition, Jesse Budel
Steve Reich's ‘Music For 18 Musicians’ As A Soundscape Composition, Jesse Budel
Directions of New Music
Over the past half century, there has been much research into the acoustic qualities of soundscapes from a variety of perspectives: the humanities and social sciences as per the ‘acoustic ecology’ movement (established by Schafer, Truax, and Westerkamp et al.), and more recently the environmental science and ecology as per ‘soundscape ecology’ (established by Farina, Pijanowski, and Krause, et al.). Collectively, these disciplines provide diverse methods for engagement with analysis of acoustic environments. Simultaneous to the rise of the acoustic ecology movement in the 1970s (marked by the publication of Schafer’s ‘The Tuning of the World (1974)), the composition of …
Koreans As Japanese As Manchurians: Korean Nationality In Manchuria, Santiago J. Ravello
Koreans As Japanese As Manchurians: Korean Nationality In Manchuria, Santiago J. Ravello
University Honors Theses
Before the invasion of the Japanese Kwantung Army into Manchuria in 1931, Japanese expansion had already begun. One strategy centered on Japan’s Korean subject in Manchuria, a region in northeast China. The rights and obligations of the Koreans here had been decided through agreements between the Qing and then-independent Korea. Following Korea's annexation by the Empire of Japan in 1910, the Japanese began to abuse their new subject’s right in tandem with Japanese extraterritoriality held in China to begin a process of land grabbing. This strategy relied on vague interpretations of nationality regarding the Koreans in order to maximize Japanese …
Inherent Multiculturalism: An Ancient Chinese Practice Becomes A Part Of The Indonesian Everyday, Margaret Chan
Inherent Multiculturalism: An Ancient Chinese Practice Becomes A Part Of The Indonesian Everyday, Margaret Chan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Several methods are used to trace cultural transfer between countries. The time-honoured methods are chronicles of early travellers and archaeology. We can also look to epigraphs and loan words. Present-day ethnic communities also suggest earlier settlements. Edward B. Tylor proposed the world distribution of games as anthropological evidence. Tylor's method combined with an archaeology into the Everyday provides evidence of earlier cultural transfer and present-day applications of the game enables analysis to draw socio-cultural knowledge of inter-ethnic, inter-cultural reception to foreign influences in host societies.

Music Therapy Methods And Vocalizations: A Look Into One Boy's Process, Brooke Rutstein
Music Therapy Methods And Vocalizations: A Look Into One Boy's Process, Brooke Rutstein
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This capstone thesis project explores a detail-oriented music therapy approach used to elicit vocalizations and speech for an individual on the autism spectrum. Although there is compelling research on music therapy contributing to speech acquisition for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the methods discussed in the literature are vague and do not discuss the music itself in detail. Specifics would be helpful in order to allow these methods to be replicable. To explore specific musical elements, I administered five 30-minute music therapy sessions to a 12-year-old boy on the autism spectrum during his school day. During sessions, I measured …
The Synthesis Of Balkan Folk Tunes In The Music Of Vlastimir Nikolovski And Alexander Vladigerov, Dejan Daskalov
The Synthesis Of Balkan Folk Tunes In The Music Of Vlastimir Nikolovski And Alexander Vladigerov, Dejan Daskalov
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The study of folk music from the Balkan countries proves to be a long and complex area of study, since the access to sources, scores and literature is quite limited. Distribution of accurate information in regards to Balkan folk music is of significant importance because it would provide a global opportunity for promotion and education on this topic. Without documented research, inaccurate presentations of Balkan music could cause an overall disinterest in this genre.
The original and alluring aspects of this style of music lie mostly in its meter. Moreover, it contains three fundamental metric structures: regular, asymmetric, unmeasured and …
The Life Of A Marimba Master: Zeferino Nandayapa Ralda; Composer, Band Leader, Soloist, Lindsay Michelle Whelan
The Life Of A Marimba Master: Zeferino Nandayapa Ralda; Composer, Band Leader, Soloist, Lindsay Michelle Whelan
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Zeferino Nandayapa Ralda was the greatest Mexican marimba artist of the twentieth century. Born in Chiapas, Mexico, Zeferino was the youngest son of Norberto Nandayapa, the most well respected Mexican marimba builder of his time. Throughout Zeferino’s lifetime, he
cultivated a career that made him well-known in Mexico and firmly established the name Nandayapa as being synonymous with the word marimba. Zeferino’s career consisted of appearances as a solo artist, as a featured soloist with symphony orchestras around Mexico, as leader of marimba bands, and, many appearances abroad. He wrote many arrangements of standard Mexican folk songs, classical literature, as …
Among The Palms1, Lee Haring
Among The Palms1, Lee Haring
Publications and Research
Born out of the convergence of intellectual traditions and owning a borrowing capacity analogous to the one that engenders creole languages, the study of folklore, or folkloristics, claims the right to adapt and remodel political, psychological, and anthropological insights, not only for itself but for the humanities disciplines of philosophy, art, literature, and music (the “PALM” disciplines). Performance-based folkloristics looks like a new blend, or network, of elements from several of those. What looks like poaching, which is a common practice for folksong and folk narrative, can be examined in the PALM disciplines under names like intertextuality and plagiarism. Nation-oriented …

From Suassuna To Guerra-Peixe: The Armorial Movement In Brazil During The Military Dictatorship (1964-1985)—Constructing Notions Of Northeastern Identity Through Music And Literature, Rafael Torralvo Da Silva
Open Access Theses
Conceived by the playwright, novelist, and scholar, Ariano Suassuna (1927-2014), and officially established on October 18, 1970, the Movimento Armorial emerged as an artistic manifestation that proposed to create an erudite art form rooted in folk traditions to express the local color of the northeast region and the national identity of Brazil. Building on ideas introduced by the sociologist Gilberto Freyre and the members of the Escola de Recife (Recife School), Suassuna posited that the cultural and ethnic amalgamation between native Amerindians, African slaves, and Iberian colonizers was crystalized in regional Brazilian folklore. In his views, this folk art epitomized …
European Jazz: A Comparative Investigation Into The Reception And Impact Of Jazz In Interwar Paris And The Weimar Republic, Douglas A. Kowalewski
European Jazz: A Comparative Investigation Into The Reception And Impact Of Jazz In Interwar Paris And The Weimar Republic, Douglas A. Kowalewski
The Gettysburg Historical Journal
Both Paris and the Weimar Republic were fascinated with American jazz in the interwar period. Because of jazz's connection to African American culture, this fascination is linked with the themes of identity and race relations. This work will demonstrate that interwar Parisians were not always receptive of African Americans that played jazz, and that the citizens of the Weimar Republic were more aware of and interested in the African American culture that permeated jazz in the 1920s and 30s.

Enduring Music: Migrant Appalachian Communities And The Shenandoah National Park, Madeline Marsh
Enduring Music: Migrant Appalachian Communities And The Shenandoah National Park, Madeline Marsh
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
This paper is an archival study of the displaced children of families formerly living in the Shenandoah National Park which spans from Strasburg to Waynesboro, Virginia. The study looks at interviews, from the JMU Special Collections archives, of these children in the 1970-80s, nearly fifty years after their forced migration from the 197,438 acres that comprised the park. Change and pressure during the 1930s-40s combined with national policy began the nostalgic preservation and veneration of the culture of these people of the Blue Ridge Mountains; through the archives, a clear and diverse picture of the perspectives and lifestyles of people …

Western Travellers In The Land Of The Buddha Legitimising Travel Through The Religionification Of Tourism, François Thibeault
Western Travellers In The Land Of The Buddha Legitimising Travel Through The Religionification Of Tourism, François Thibeault
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
On the one hand, tourism has developed to such a point that it now shapes other social realities in global society. On the other hand, pilgrimage phenomena are thriving in the twenty-first century, as they become both more globalised and more particularised. This paper shows that drawing oppositions between pilgrimage and tourism assumes an exclusive, dichotomous view that is misleading. Instead, I insist on an understanding of the reciprocal influence between religion and tourism in which neither of the two spheres subjects itself to the other. The argument is based on the understandings and discourses of legitimation that Westerners travelling …
Selected Folksong Arrangements Of Zoltán Kodály: An Analysis And Performer’S Guide, Sebastian A. Haboczki
Selected Folksong Arrangements Of Zoltán Kodály: An Analysis And Performer’S Guide, Sebastian A. Haboczki
Dissertations, 2014-2019
The history of Hungarian music and the Hungarian nation is a long and complicated one. Conquered by many different empires throughout history, Hungary faced challenges in maintaining its unique music and cultural heritage. Despite Hungary’s tumultuous changes of governance, its folksongs have evolved and flourished. Through the efforts of people such as Zoltán Kodály, Béla Bartók, and Lászlo Dobszay, these folksongs have been collected, studied, and categorized. Kodály, an accomplished musician whose research and music education philosophy can sometimes overshadow his compositional prowess, also composed folksong arrangements which embody the true nature of Hungarian music. These arrangements can be used …

Cowboy Art Song: A Contextual And Musical Analysis Of Libby Larsen's "Cowboy Songs", Ann Gabrielle Richardson
Cowboy Art Song: A Contextual And Musical Analysis Of Libby Larsen's "Cowboy Songs", Ann Gabrielle Richardson
Dissertations
This dissertation sprang from a combination of two personal interests: cowboy culture and classical art song. The union of my cowgirl heritage with my career as a classical vocalist has long fueled an interest in a particular niche of repertoire: soprano art song with thematic connections to the North American cowboy. A conducted state of research reveals no scholarly literature exploring this specific topic. Libby Larsen’s collection, Cowboy Songs, fulfills the aforementioned niche, successfully capturing the spirit, musical idioms, and cultural themes of the North American cowboy.
Chapter I lays a contextual foundation for cowboy song, providing a catalogue …
The Son Jarocho Revival: Reinvention And Community Building In A Mexican Music Scene In New York City, Emily J. Williamson
The Son Jarocho Revival: Reinvention And Community Building In A Mexican Music Scene In New York City, Emily J. Williamson
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation analyzes the ways son jarocho (the Mexican regional music, dance, and poetic tradition) and the fandango (the son jarocho communitarian musical celebration), have been used as community-building tools among Mexican and non-Mexican musicians in New York City. Since the late 1970s, the participatory elements of son jarocho have been revitalized for not only the preservation of the fandango, but also for the purpose of creating a community-building tool that can be adapted and applied to create musical communities. Across the U.S. and in Mexico, son jarocho communities have formed, using similar methods of musical instruction, communitarian music making, …
