Our Culture Is Who We Are! “Rescuing” Grenadian Identity Through Musicking And Music Education, Danielle Sirek
Our Culture Is Who We Are! “Rescuing” Grenadian Identity Through Musicking And Music Education, Danielle Sirek
Education Publications
In this article I explore the relationships between identities and musicking in Grenada, West Indies, taking into account the understandings of community and nationhood that foreground and inform identity discourse in the Grenadian context. Through the dual lenses of music education and ethnomusicology, I analyze musicking and music education initiatives intended to “rescue” Grenadian identity and Grenadian values as articulated by an older generation of Grenadians and by governmental agencies. I argue that musicking in Grenada is intertwined with identity in complex ways, and that there is a perceived lack of transmission of folk musicking practices whose consequences extend well …

Authority, Gender, And Sacred Space: The Musical Reform-Ation Brought By Women Cantors, Sophia Yvonne Reinier Doscher
Authority, Gender, And Sacred Space: The Musical Reform-Ation Brought By Women Cantors, Sophia Yvonne Reinier Doscher
Theses & ETDs
Music inspires sacredness even in profane spaces. This thesis examines music’s power in creating sacred space in the context of women cantors in Reform Judaism. In the span of a few decades, the position of women in the Synagogue changed drastically. Filling the role of the cantor in the clergy contributed uniquely to this transformation due to the special impact of music in the development of authority within sacred space. In demonstrating how the power of music gives authority to women in a space where their autonomy has been missing, I focus on the authority of women cantors in their …
Religion On The Dance Floor: Afro-Dominican Music And Ritual From Altars To Clubs, Angelina M. Tallaj
Religion On The Dance Floor: Afro-Dominican Music And Ritual From Altars To Clubs, Angelina M. Tallaj
Publications and Research
In this essay, I examine the current New York scene and the emerging discourses surrounding the recent visibility of Dominican Voodoo (Vudú) and its music. When Dominicans migrated, they brought with them these marginalized genres of music including the music of Vudú, and, since the 2000s, this music (palo) has moved from the religious arena to the popular music world, in turn changing the nature of the religious rituals. In New York City, Vudú ceremonies can now publicly feature drumming and possession and are practiced in commercial venues rather than in private homes and altar spaces. While this move of …

Women In Music: Letting A Long Story Be Long Contemplating Women’S Sonic, Musical, And Spiritual Experiences In Prehistory, Deborah J. Saidel
Theses and Dissertations
Situated within deep history, this study explores the auditory and spiritual lives of Paleolithic women. It considers their personal agency in mediating the spiritual power of sound and how doing so contributes to a multifaceted musicality. The theoretical framework involves a wide spectrum of topics, from ways of rethinking the writing of history and reckoning with time, to sound studies and the study of acoustics in ancient sites, to a critical examination through a feminist lens of normative disciplinary scholarship in anthropology and archaeology, religious studies, and musicology. I explore potential audio-visual-lithic relationships for their implications for deepening an understanding …

The seven areas of teacher behaviors identified by the research focusing on effectiveness in choral conducting will be introduced and compared with those NASM standards and expectations. Following the comparison, potential …
Analysing Intonation Of The Pied Butcherbird, Jean-Michel Maujean
Analysing Intonation Of The Pied Butcherbird, Jean-Michel Maujean
Theses : Honours
Native to Australia, the Pied Butcherbird has been extensively studied and transcribed by previous composers, notably including Olivier Messiaen. This may be due to richness and diversity in each bird’s repertoire, along with parallels drawn from Western Tonality. Hollis Taylor has conducted extensive study in this field, notably with an analysis of a transcription made by Messiaen, that was incorporated in his piece Éclairs sur l'au- delà (1988-91). Coupled with the original field recording, Taylor’s analysis and Messiaen’s score, this study will reanalyse the original recording from which Messiaen made his transcription.

Instrumental Teacher Education And The Incoming Tide Of Information Technology: A Contemporary Guitar Perspective., Daniel A. Lee, William Baker, Nick Haywood
Instrumental Teacher Education And The Incoming Tide Of Information Technology: A Contemporary Guitar Perspective., Daniel A. Lee, William Baker, Nick Haywood
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
There is a metaphorical incoming tide of information technology (IT) in the global guitar community. This phenomenological study examines the activities of the online guitar community to determine its role in guitar pedagogy. It questions how the traditional teacher-student model can continue to operate amidst the floodwaters of online guitar education resources. An historical presentation, and analysis of current practice is offered, and the pedagogical value of some online resources are scrutinised. The process of enculturation through Contemporary Popular Music (CPM) education is discussed from the perspective of guitar pedagogy and the implications for instrumental guitar teaching are examined. This …
Negotiation Of Musical Remembrance Within Jewish Ritual Performances In Prague's Old-New Synagogue, Veronika Seidlová
Negotiation Of Musical Remembrance Within Jewish Ritual Performances In Prague's Old-New Synagogue, Veronika Seidlová
Journal of Urban Culture Research
Prague's Jewish Town has become an important site of remembering for both Jewish and non-Jewish visitors. This ethnographic case study aims to show that global flows of people influence the sound of the ritual in the legendary, medieval Old-New Synagogue in Prague, where multiple Jewish cohorts negotiate their ways of remembering. Based on the understanding of remembrance as socially constructed in the present and of music as a reflection, as well as co-creator of social reality, the essay reveals certain aspects of the social process of negotiation of music remembrance within ritual performance (as observed, e.g., in the case of …

John Williams: An Evaluation Of His Impact Upon The Culture Of The Classical Guitar, Michael O'Toole
Doctoral
This thesis examines the career of the Australian guitarist John Williams and his impact upon the culture of the classical guitar. Williams has been a celebrated guitarist for more than six decades and has performed and recorded extensively during that period. He has made a remarkably varied contribution to guitar culture, performing in a wide variety of different styles, highlighting the guitar’s unique strength as a versatile and adaptable instrument. Williams’ career is in marked contrast to that of many of his contemporaries, including his mentor Andrés Segovia. Segovia believed the classical guitar must assert its individuality in order to …
The Hidden Curriculum In The Music Theory Classroom, Cora S. Palfy, Eric Gilson
The Hidden Curriculum In The Music Theory Classroom, Cora S. Palfy, Eric Gilson
Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy
Conferences and journals within the field of music theory have shown a shift in the representation of popular music, non-Western repertory, and nontraditional analytical approaches within paper presentations, poster sessions, and articles. Despite an advancement beyond the traditional canon within the larger discipline, many music theory classrooms still reflect a Western Art Music-heavy canon and, inherently, a system of valuation that can marginalize students within an increasingly socially and culturally diverse university system. A survey-based study investigating the influence of this valuation system was run with the cooperation of twenty-one North American colleges and universities. Using both qualitative and quantitative …
Some Approaches To Representing Sound With Colour And Shape, Lindsay Vickery
Some Approaches To Representing Sound With Colour And Shape, Lindsay Vickery
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
In recent times much of the practice of musical notation and representation has begun a gradual migration away from the monochrome standard that existed since the emergence of printed Non-Western music in the 16th century, towards the full colour pallet afforded by modern printers and computer screens. This move has expanded the possibilities available for the representation of information in the musical score. Such an expansion is arguably necessitated by the growth of new musical techniques favouring musical phenomena that were previously poorly captured by traditional Western musical notation. As time-critical form of visualisation there is a strong imperative for …
Roshan Ara Begum: Performing Classical Music, Gender, And Muslim Nationalism In Pakistan, Fawzia Afzal-Khan
Roshan Ara Begum: Performing Classical Music, Gender, And Muslim Nationalism In Pakistan, Fawzia Afzal-Khan
Department of English Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The imbrication of issues of nation, class, gender, and religion necessitates a critical revision of the so-called secular postcolonial modernity embraced by Indian nationalists, including musicologists. The life and struggle of Roshan Ara Begum—Pakistan's first and, to date, arguably greatest singer of classical music—is an instructive example of the complex intertwining of agency, resistance, and resignation in Muslim-identified Pakistan and Hindu-identified India.

The Life And Work Of Barbara Nissman, Giuliana Paola Contreras Ampuero
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research paper focuses on the life and work of American concert pianist Barbara Nissman (b. 1944). Her extensive work as a performer, writer, lecturer and guest clinician makes Nissman one of the most accomplished artists of our time. This paper is the first comprehensive look at Nissman’s career and her diverse contributions to piano study and performance as a leading expert on the piano music of Alberto Ginastera (1916-1983), Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953), Béla Bartók (1881-1945), and Franz Liszt (1811-1886). As an overview of Nissman’s life and career, this paper provides both a thorough presentation of Nissman’s contributions and serves …
Music In The Northern Woods: An Archaeological Exploration Of Musical Instrument Remains, Matthew Durocher
Music In The Northern Woods: An Archaeological Exploration Of Musical Instrument Remains, Matthew Durocher
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Archaeological and historical literature neglects music and sound. The quantity and distribution of musical remains found during archaeological excavations at Coalwood, a Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company (CCI) logging camp active from 1901-1912 in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, addresses the importance of music to the people that lived there. Musical reed plates from harmonicas, concertinas, and accordions were recovered and examined. These musical remains have traditionally been ignored as a diagnostic artifact, but here, I use them as primary evidence to access the daily lives of people in the northern woods. To do this, I will present how CCI developed Coalwood …
Guitar Arrangements Of Selected Danzas Of Juan F. Acosta, With New Considerations Of His Music And Musical Life, Hermelindo Ruiz Mestre
Guitar Arrangements Of Selected Danzas Of Juan F. Acosta, With New Considerations Of His Music And Musical Life, Hermelindo Ruiz Mestre
Theses and Dissertations--Music
Juan Francisco Acosta (1890-1968) was a prolific composer, band conductor, and educator from Puerto Rico who created 1,256 original compositions. Even though his activities and influence were integral to the musical life of Puerto Rico in the twentieth century, many details of his life and works remain unknown.
This project centers on Acosta’s contribution to the Puerto Rican tradition of the danza—a dance-based genre originating in the nineteenth century—through the study and arrangement of five of Acosta's danzas. Although Acosta composed most danzas for piano, he adapted them for performances by the municipal bands that he led …

A Critical And Performance Edition Of Agustin Barrios’S Cueca: Comparative Analysis Of Form, Notation, And Performance Practice Of Barrios’S Work To Traditional Chilean Cuecas From The Beginning Of The Twentieth-Century, Enrique Sandoval-Cisternas
Theses and Dissertations--Music
Agustin Barrios's guitar music has become increasingly popular over the last forty years. After his death, a revival of interest in his compositions began in the 1970s, motivated by a series of publications and recordings of his music by important guitar performers at that time. The most important of these recordings came from the Australian guitar performer John Williams, who was interviewed in 1976 by ABC Television Australia for a film about the Paraguayan composer. The next year, Williams recorded a collection of fifteen works in his album John Williams-Barrios: John Williams Plays the Music of Agustín Barrios Mangoré. …
Max Neuhaus, R. Murray Schafer, And The Challenges Of Noise, Megan Elizabeth Murph
Max Neuhaus, R. Murray Schafer, And The Challenges Of Noise, Megan Elizabeth Murph
Theses and Dissertations--Music
In this dissertation, I analyzed Max Neuhaus’s (1939-2009) and R. Murray Schafer’s (b. 1932) commentary and work regarding noise, its control, and its relationship with the environment from the 1960 to the 1980s. Both Neuhaus and Schafer as well as those more directly involved with noise abatement research and policy were responding to the challenges and possibilities that noise posed in the latter twentieth century. In this project, I delved into these substantial links and argued that responding to and engaging with noise abatement policies was a key impetus to much of their work, which scholarship has yet to critically …

Introduction: "Ain’T It Evil To Live Backwards?": A Hip Hop Perspective Of Religion, Travis T. Harris, Cassandra D. Chaney
Journal of Hip Hop Studies
Historically, Black religion has been the cornerstone of the African experience in America. Due to the "peculiar institution” of slavery" and the ways this institutional residue still affect the lives of slave descendants, Hip Hop provides a forum to simultaneously acknowledge similarities and highlight differences. What scholars of religion and Hip Hop studies have revealed are the ways in which the effectiveness and our very understanding of “religion” changes when we bring Hip Hop in to the mix.
The Same Old Blues Crap: Selling The Blues At Fat Possum Records, Jacqueline Sahagian
The Same Old Blues Crap: Selling The Blues At Fat Possum Records, Jacqueline Sahagian
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis interrogates the marketing strategies of the Oxford, Mississippi-based record label Fat Possum, which was founded in the early 1990s by Matthew Johnson with the goal of recording obscure hill country blues artists. Fat Possum gained recognition for its raw-sounding recordings of bluesmen, including R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, Cedell Davis, and T-Model Ford, as well as its irreverent marketing techniques. Adopting the tagline “not the same old blues crap,” Fat Possum asserted that its blues were both different from and superior to all other blues music. This thesis argues that while Fat Possum claimed to be a disruptive force …
