Partial Replacement Of Cement For Waste Aggregates In Concrete Coastal And Marine Infrastructure: A Foundation For Ecological Enhancement?, Ryan S. Mcmanus, Nicholas Archibald, Sean Comber, Antony M. Knights, Richard C. Thompson, Louise B. Firth

The effects of climate change and an expanding human population are driving the need for the expansion of coastal and marine infrastructure (CMI), the development of which is introducing hard substrate into the marine environment on a previously unseen scale. Whilst the majority of previous research has focussed on how physical features affect intertidal macrobiotic communities, this study considered the effects of differences in the chemical composition of concrete on subtidal biofilm and macrobiotic communities. Two commonly used cement replacements, pulverised fly ash (PFA) and ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS), were used in a combination of proportions to assess how …

Prospective Subgroup Analyses Of The Randomized Mcl‐002 (Sprint) Study: Lenalidomide Versus Investigator's Choice In Relapsed Or Refractory Mantle Cell Lymphoma, L Arcaini, T Lamy, J Walewski, D Belada, Et Al

In the mantle cell lymphoma (MCL)-002 study, lenalidomide demonstrated significantly improved median progression-free survival (PFS) compared with investigator's choice (IC) in patients with relapsed/refractory MCL. Here we present the long-term follow-up data and results of preplanned subgroup exploratory analyses from MCL-002 to evaluate the potential impact of demographic factors, baseline clinical characteristics and prior therapies on PFS. In MCL-002, patients with relapsed/refractory MCL were randomized 2:1 to receive lenalidomide (25 mg/day orally on days 1–21; 28-day cycles) or single-agent IC therapy (rituximab, gemcitabine, fludarabine, chlorambucil or cytarabine). The intent-to-treat population comprised 254 patients (lenalidomide, n = 170; IC, n = …

Marine litter is a global challenge and society plays an important role via lifestyles and behaviour, including policy support. We analysed public perceptions of marine litter and contributing factors, using data from 1133 respondents across 16 European countries. People reported high levels of concern about marine litter, and the vast majority (95%) reported seeing litter when visiting the coast. The problem was attributed to product and packaging design and behaviour rather than lack of facilities or accidental loss of items. Retailers, industry and government were perceived as most responsible, but also least motivated and competent to reduce marine litter, whereas …

The Nature Of Twitter Trending Topics Analysing Intrinsic Factors Associated With The Twitter Ecosystem, Ma Palomino, Q Ribac, G Masala
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
We are inundated with data—companies such as Twitter deal with petabytes of information on a daily basis. However, some users, especially the new ones, often find it difficult to cope with the overwhelming and disorganised deluge of information. Scientists have already worked out ways to identify Twitter trending topics, as a means to index information and make sense of it. However, we know little about the impact on trending topics of various intrinsic factors associated with the Twitter ecosystem. For example, anecdotal evidence suggests that trending topics are characterised by highly polarised tweets, or that large audiences typically host the …
Espeletia Giant Rosette Plants Are Reliable Biological Indicators Of Time Since Fire In Andean Grasslands, Ma Zomer, Pm Ramsay
Espeletia Giant Rosette Plants Are Reliable Biological Indicators Of Time Since Fire In Andean Grasslands, Ma Zomer, Pm Ramsay
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
© 2017 Springer Science+Business Media B.V., part of Springer Nature Páramo grasslands in the tropical Andes are fire-prone ecosystems and an understanding of their fire ecology is fundamental to biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management. Fire registers are normally impractical in these remote, cloud-covered landscapes, but Espeletia giant rosette plants have been proposed as biological indicators of time since fire in páramos. Espeletia giant stem rosettes tolerate fire well, protecting apical buds in at the heart of their leaf rosettes, and for some species, germination is known to be enhanced by fire. As the plant grows, its dead leaves remain attached …

From Babies To Robots: The Contribution Of Developmental Robotics To Developmental Psychology, A Cangelosi, M Schlesinger

© 2018 The Society for Research in Child Development, Inc. The latest developments in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, and the parallel advances in robotics, have contributed recently to a shift in the scientific approach to modeling human intelligence. These innovations, accompanied by the new emphasis on embodied and grounded cognition in AI and psychology, have led to the establishment of the field of developmental robotics. This field features an interdisciplinary approach, built on collaboration between cognitive robotics and child psychology, to the autonomous design of behavioral and cognitive capabilities in artificial cognitive agents, such as robots, which is …
Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Curve Based On The Cjp Model And Its Application Method, B Yang
Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Curve Based On The Cjp Model And Its Application Method, B Yang
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Fatigue crack growth rate tests of commercial pure titanium specimens with 5 different height-width ratios of CT specimens using the digital imagine correlation technique are carried out. The traditional stress intensity factor range, ?K, and the new definition of the stress intensity factor range, ?KCJP, which is under the theory of the CJP model, are utilized in the analysis of the test data. Both the da/dN-?K curve and the da/dN-?KCJP curve reflect the distribution of the test data effectively and show good fitting effects. Compared to the traditional ?K, the ?KCJP is obtained directly from the displacement fields near the …

The aims of the project were to • collect evidence of success (converting undergraduate projects into peer-reviewed publications) both internally and externally. • redefine undergraduate projects to develop staff-student collaborations that enable final year projects to be converted into peer-reviewed publications. • identify areas of good practice that can encourage cultural change. Background/context to project: This paper reports on a small-scale empirical study stems from the desire of our team of UK university engineering staff to develop our research outputs. We wanted to find ways to capitalise on final year undergraduate dissertations that could result in peer-reviewed publications. The university …
