Discrete Triangulated Categories, Nathan Broomhead, David Pauksztello, David Ploog Jan 2018

Discrete Triangulated Categories, Nathan Broomhead, David Pauksztello, David Ploog

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We introduce and study several homological notions which generalise the discrete derived categories of D. Vossieck. As an application, we show that Vossieck discrete algebras have this property with respect to all bounded t-structures. We give many examples of triangulated categories regarding these notions.

A More Effective Rationalisation Of Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Data For Various Specimen Geometries And Stress Ratios Using The Cjp Model, B Yang, Jm Vasco-Olmo, Fa Díaz, Mn James

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This paper demonstrates that the CJP model of crack tip stresses, through its ability to directly predict the effective range of stress intensity factor, also provides an improved rationalisation of fatigue crack growth rate across several different specimen geometries and stress ratios. This aim is achieved through a comparison between the crack growth rate rationalisation obtained using the CJP stress intensity factor range, ΔKCJP, and that derived from the standard Irwin definition of ΔK = Kmax − Kmin. The results demonstrate a significant improvement arising from the use of the CJP stress intensity factors and also highlight the fact that …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

© 2018 Wiley Publishing Ltd. Appropriate S-N fatigue design curves for friction stir welded joints in aluminium alloys are currently not specified in design codes and standards. The present paper is intended to assist in enabling standardised fatigue design for such joints, through a comprehensive statistical analysis of more than 500 individual sets of data gathered from published literature. These data are used to establish the usual design fatigue curves for welds that give a 97.7% survival probability with 95% confidence. Experimental fatigue data represent defect-free butt joints and include both flat plate and tubular joints between similar aluminium alloys …

Investigation Of Effective Stress Intensity Factors During Overload Fatigue Cycles Using Photoelastic And Dic Techniques, Jm Vasco-Olmo, B Yang, Mn James, Fa Díaz

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

© 2018 Elsevier Ltd This work uses DIC and photoelastic techniques to investigate the effect of single overload cycles applied during constant amplitude fatigue. Effective values of the range of stress intensity factor were calculated using the CJP model of crack tip stress and displacement fields, as this model considers both wake contact and compatibility-induced influences on the applied elastic field arising from the plastic enclave generated around a fatigue crack. Values of the effective stress intensity factor are related to the observed crack growth acceleration and retardation. In addition, the paper compares the CJP results with those obtained using …

Approaches to measuring marine biological parameters remain almost as diverse as the researchers who measure them. However, understanding the patterns of diversity in ocean life over different temporal and geographic scales requires consistent data and information on the potential environmental drivers. As a group of marine scientists from different disciplines, we suggest a formalized, consistent framework of 20 biological, chemical, physical, and socioeconomic parameters that we consider the most important for describing environmental and biological variability. We call our proposed framework the General Ocean Survey and Sampling Iterative Protocol (GOSSIP). We hope that this framework will establish a consistent approach …

Detecting Environmental Change: How Many Samples Are Required?, M. J. Gardner, S. D.W. Comber

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

One of the most important functions of environmental monitoring is the detection of change. This can be the delineation of deteriorating circumstances or the identification of the success of remedial measures. The design of effective monitoring of change (and hence the optimisation of resources devoted to monitoring) relies on appropriate replication - knowing how many samples are required. Lack of information on the variance of the measured parameter is often a barrier to determining the optimum sampling strategy. An important new information resource on within-site variance of the concentrations of over 60 trace substances in wastewater treatment works effluents has …

Lengger, Paul A. Sutton, Steven J. Rowland, Sarah J. Hurley, Ann Pearson, B. David A. Naafs, Xinyue Dang, Gordon N. Inglis, Richard D. Pancost

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Archaeal isoprenoidal glycerol dibiphytanyl glycerol tetraether lipids (iGDGTs) and their non-isoprenoidal branched bacterial analogues (brGDGTs) have widespread applications in biogeochemistry and paleothermometry. Analysis of GDGTs usually involves separation using high performance liquid chromatography, typically coupled via atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation to mass spectrometric detection in selected ion-monitoring mode (HPLC–APCI-MS). However, reliable determination of ratios and, in particular, quantification by this technique, can be challenging due to differences in ionisation efficiencies of the various compounds. Quantification of GDGTs also relies on external calibration of the relative response to an internal standard with authenticated GDGTs, which are often not readily accessible. Here, …

An Accurate And Cost Efficient Physical Scale Model Of A Direct Driven Point-Absorber With Constant Damping Power Take-Off, S Thomas, M Giassi, M Göteman, M Eriksson, Jm Isberg, Mr Hann, Ej Ransley, J Engström

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

When it comes to validating simulation results for wave energy converters, physical scale experiments play an important role as a cost effective preliminary stage before full- scale test. But modelling the power take-off for scale models can be a complex process. State-of-the-art models use static friction or controlled motors to simulate the behavior of the actual power take-off generator. In simulations, of an idealized generator, a constant velocity-proportional damping is often used. Controlled motors can operate this way but are relatively complex and expensive and may suffer from friction or are limited by the motor dynamics. In particular when physical …

During 2016 and 2017 a program of field vibration measurements was made on a set of Victorian era granite lighthouse towers around the British Isles. The field tests were designed for structural identification to enable condition assessment and identification of extreme wave loads through long term monitoring. The primary test method was forced vibration, and ambient vibration measurements was used as a backup. The best operational modal analysis (OMA) results were obtained using Bayesian OMA, which provide a clear picture of the directionality of the mode shapes which appeared at very close frequencies due to the symmetry of the towers. …

Creativity And Cognitive Control: Behavioral And Erp Evidence That Divergent Thinking, But Not Real-Life Creative Achievement, Relates To Better Cognitive Control., Darya L. Zabelina, Giorgio Ganis

School of Psychology

Two studies used event-related potentials (ERPs) to examine whether and how divergent thinking and creative achievement are linked to attentional flexibility and cognitive control as indexed by response times and by the amplitude of the anterior N2 ERP component. Both experiments used an oddball paradigm in which participants viewed hierarchical letter stimuli and identified target letters in frequent and rare target trials. The successful identification of targets required attentional flexibility when switching levels of attention (from the frequent global to the rare local attentional level, or vice-versa). Divergent thinkers showed smaller switching times on rare target trials, indicating higher levels …

Distributed Nfv Orchestration In A Wmn-Based Disaster Network, G Frick, A. Paguem Tchinda, U Trick, A. Lehmann, G Frick, A. Paguem Tchinda, B. Ghita

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This publication deals with distributed NFV orchestration in a WMN-based disaster network. The NFV orchestrator defined by ETSI is designed as a central unit and therefore includes the possibility of a single point of failure. Due to the environment of a disaster, a WMN node hosting this centralized orchestrator might get destroyed at events such as aftershocks resulting in a breakdown of the NFV infrastructure as it cannot be maintained and orchestrated anymore. To eliminate this aspect, requirements for a distributed NFV orchestration are defined. The requirements are categorized into architectural and orchestration specific aspects and are derived from the …

Partial Replacement Of Cement For Waste Aggregates In Concrete Coastal And Marine Infrastructure: A Foundation For Ecological Enhancement?, Ryan S. Mcmanus, Nicholas Archibald, Sean Comber, Antony M. Knights, Richard C. Thompson, Louise B. Firth

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The effects of climate change and an expanding human population are driving the need for the expansion of coastal and marine infrastructure (CMI), the development of which is introducing hard substrate into the marine environment on a previously unseen scale. Whilst the majority of previous research has focussed on how physical features affect intertidal macrobiotic communities, this study considered the effects of differences in the chemical composition of concrete on subtidal biofilm and macrobiotic communities. Two commonly used cement replacements, pulverised fly ash (PFA) and ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS), were used in a combination of proportions to assess how …

Prospective Subgroup Analyses Of The Randomized Mcl‐002 (Sprint) Study: Lenalidomide Versus Investigator's Choice In Relapsed Or Refractory Mantle Cell Lymphoma, L Arcaini, T Lamy, J Walewski, D Belada, Et Al

Peninsula Medical School

In the mantle cell lymphoma (MCL)-002 study, lenalidomide demonstrated significantly improved median progression-free survival (PFS) compared with investigator's choice (IC) in patients with relapsed/refractory MCL. Here we present the long-term follow-up data and results of preplanned subgroup exploratory analyses from MCL-002 to evaluate the potential impact of demographic factors, baseline clinical characteristics and prior therapies on PFS. In MCL-002, patients with relapsed/refractory MCL were randomized 2:1 to receive lenalidomide (25 mg/day orally on days 1–21; 28-day cycles) or single-agent IC therapy (rituximab, gemcitabine, fludarabine, chlorambucil or cytarabine). The intent-to-treat population comprised 254 patients (lenalidomide, n = 170; IC, n = …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Marine litter is a global challenge and society plays an important role via lifestyles and behaviour, including policy support. We analysed public perceptions of marine litter and contributing factors, using data from 1133 respondents across 16 European countries. People reported high levels of concern about marine litter, and the vast majority (95%) reported seeing litter when visiting the coast. The problem was attributed to product and packaging design and behaviour rather than lack of facilities or accidental loss of items. Retailers, industry and government were perceived as most responsible, but also least motivated and competent to reduce marine litter, whereas …

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has been found to be a strong predictor of a favorable corporate image [Gray, 1986. Managing the corporate image: The key to public trust. London: Quorum Books]. Websites have become an essential communication platform [Dawkins, 2004. Corporate responsibility: The communication challenge. Journal of Communication Management, 9(2), 108–119]. This study aims to investigate how CSR can be used in enhancing organizational corporate image. Content analyses of 150 corporate websites of organizations in Asia headquartered in Singapore were conducted, followed by in-depth interviews with public relations (PR) practitioners to examine the motivations behind their CSR engagement. Findings showed …
