Enhancing Security Behaviour By Supporting The User, Sm Furnell, W Khern-Am-Nuai, R Esmael, W Yang, N Li
Enhancing Security Behaviour By Supporting The User, Sm Furnell, W Khern-Am-Nuai, R Esmael, W Yang, N Li
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Although the role of users in maintaining security is regularly emphasized, this is often not matched by an accompanying level of support. Indeed, users are frequently given insufficient guidance to enable effective security choices and decisions, which can lead to perceived bad behaviour as a consequence. This paper discusses the forms of support that are possible, and seeks to investigate the effect of doing so in practice. Specifically, it presents findings from two experimental studies that investigate how variations in password meter usage and feedback can positively affect the resulting password choices. The first experiment examines the difference between passwords …

Towards Bayesian-Based Trust Management For Insider Attacks In Healthcare Software-Defined Networks, W Meng, K-Kr Choo, S Furnell, Av Vasilakos, Cw Probst
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
The medical industry is increasingly digitalized and Internet-connected (e.g., Internet of Medical Things), and when deployed in an Internet of Medical Things environment, software-defined networks (SDNs) allow the decoupling of network control from the data plane. There is no debate among security experts that the security of Internet-enabled medical devices is crucial, and an ongoing threat vector is insider attacks. In this paper, we focus on the identification of insider attacks in healthcare SDNs. Specifically, we survey stakeholders from 12 healthcare organizations (i.e., two hospitals and two clinics in Hong Kong, two hospitals and two clinics in Singapore, and two …

Environmental and Conservation Sciences
Modern agriculture encounters several challenges these days. There is a vital need for spatial data about plant and weed distributions. Obtaining accurate knowledge of the plants and weeds distribution in the field with manual methods are time-consuming. In this research, image processing programs were developed from the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) digital images to obtain the plant-stand count and weed identification and mapping in the field. Algorithms using pixel-march with search-hands criterion for the plant-stand count and shape-based features for weed identification were developed. Results were found to be accurate in the cropped UAV stitched images (>99 %) in …

Photodegradation Of (E)- And (Z)-Endoxifen: Kinetics, By-Products Identification And Toxicity Assessment, Marina Arino Martin
Environmental and Conservation Sciences
Endoxifen is an effective metabolite of tamoxifen, a commonly used chemotherapy drug, and has been detected at the final effluent of a municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Its presence in the environment could bring negative effects to aquatic lives. This research investigated the use of ultraviolet radiation (253.7 nm) and natural sunlight to photodegrade endoxifen in water and wastewater, the generation of photodegradation by-products (PBPs) and their toxicity. Endoxifen concentration in water was reduced by 99.1% after 35 seconds of UV light generating two toxic PBPs. Experiments in wastewater at UV light doses used for disinfection resulted in reduction of …

Turning The Tide On Trash: Empowering European Educators And School Students To Tackle Marine Litter, Bonny L. Hartley, Sabine Pahl, Matthew Holland, Iro Alampei, Joana M. Veiga, Richard C. Thompson
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Marine litter is a global environmental problem, and working with educators and school students has much potential to facilitate greater public understanding of the solutions and to enable action. This research examined two new educational activities designed to empower European educators and school students to engage with the topic of marine litter, particularly focusing on behavior and on known determinants of behavior rather than knowledge alone. In Study 1, 120 educators participated in an online training course on marine litter, and completed a pre- and post-course questionnaire to assess change. After participating in the course, educators felt significantly more skillful …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences
For many species, ocean acidification (OA) is having negative physiological consequences on their fitness and resilience to environmental change, but less is known about the ecosystem effects of these changes. Here, we assess how OA conditions predicted for 2100 affects the biological functioning of an important habitat-forming species Mytilus edulis and its susceptibility to predation by a key predator, the gastropod Nucella lapillus. Change in three physiological parameters in Mytilus were assessed: (1) shell thickness and cross-sectional surface area, (2) body volume and (3) feeding rate, as well as susceptibility to predation by N. lapillus. Shell thickness and cross-section area, …
“Read And Be Convinced”: The Image Of The Nonpartisan League In Its Creative Production, The Early Histories, And Wider Popular Culture, John Hest
History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies
In this thesis, I examine the image of the Nonpartisan League in several different contexts, arguing that the League carefully crafted their advocative political image and their opponents painted them as disloyal socialists. The Nonpartisan League was an agrarian radical political movement beginning in North Dakota in 1915, and both its proponents and opponents created powerful images of it. I first examine the creative output of two Leaguers, the poet Florence Borner and the cartoonist John Miller Baer. I then transition to four competing histories of the Nonpartisan League, published from 1920-21, by Herbert Gaston, Charles Edward Russell, William Langer, …

Effective Turning Motion Control Of Internally Actuated Autonomous Underwater Vehicles, Saeedeh Ziaeefard, Brian R. Page, Anthony Pinar, Nina Mahmoudian
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
This paper presents a novel roll mechanism and an efficient control strategy for internally actuated autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). The developed control algorithms are tested on Michigan Tech’s custom research glider, ROUGHIE (Research Oriented Underwater Glider for Hands-on Investigative Engineering), in a controlled environment. The ROUGHIE’s design parameters and operational constraints were driven by its requirement to be man portable, expandable, and maneuverable in shallow water. As an underwater glider, the ROUGHIE is underactuated with direct control of only depth, pitch, and roll. A switching control method is implemented on the ROUGHIE to improve its maneuverability, enabling smooth transitions between …

Achiral Templates In Asymmetric Catalysis: Applications In Construction Of All Carbon Quaternary Centers, Hariharaputhiran Subramanian
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Conjugated olefins are readily available and inexpensive starting materials and their functionalization offers a rapid access to many important building blocks for organic synthesis. The functionalization of these olefins by asymmetric catalytic methods for the formation of C-C and C-X bonds is an active area of research. Major advances in this field are not only triggered by the development of new catalysts but also by engineering of new acceptor olefins. In our lab we have successfully developed acceptor olefins appended to alkoxyimidazoles as a novel template. Using these templated acceptors, we demonstrated methodologies to construct all carbon-quaternary centers, one of …
Modeling Of Dynamic Hydrologic Connectivity: How Do Depressions Affect The Modeling Of Hydrologic Processes?, Kendall Morgan Grimm
Modeling Of Dynamic Hydrologic Connectivity: How Do Depressions Affect The Modeling Of Hydrologic Processes?, Kendall Morgan Grimm
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Traditional delineation and modeling methods do not consider the spatial arrangement and dynamic threshold control of surface depressions. Instead, full structural hydrologic connectivity, uniform well-connected drainage networks, and an invariant contributing area are often assumed. In reality, depressions play an important role in quantifying hydrologic connectivity and outlet discharge. Current literature lacks a preferred foundation and tools to identify and quantify hydrologic connectivity on depression-dominated landscapes. Therefore, the objectives of this dissertation research are to (1) develop a new procedure to analyze functional hydrologic connectivity related to surface topography, specifically in depression-dominated areas; (2) evaluate the impacts of the puddle-to-puddle …
Electrically Conductive Polymers And Their Use As Novel Pigments In Advanced Coatings, Joseph Robert Byrom
Electrically Conductive Polymers And Their Use As Novel Pigments In Advanced Coatings, Joseph Robert Byrom
Coatings and Polymeric Materials
With the push to more environmentally friendly materials to solve some of the biggest challenges in the coatings industry, electrically conductive polymers (ECPs) are seen as a flexible solution due to their unique properties. ECPs are seen as an attractive substitute to the current metallic materials used in applications such as printable electronics, anti-static protection, and corrosion mitigation. Polypyrrole (PPy) is seen as a popular class of ECPs due to its inherent high electrical conductivity, resistance to environmental degradation, and ease of synthesis. The first part of this work was to study the ability of polypyrrole to be synthesized through …

Service Learning Assignments: The Interesect Between Assignment Framing, Student Motivation, And Perceived Relevance, Tori Benders
Communication
Although learning has traditionally happened within the four walls of a classroom, as service learning courses become more prevalent, instructors are challenging their students to take learning outside of the classroom and into the community. Service learning has the potential to transform students and their learning, it is not widely known how to ensure students are motivated to complete these assignments and see them as relevant to their futures. This study used social determination theory and a 2X2 experimental design to survey 271 students about their motivation to complete a service learning project presented to them in an assignment sheet …

Comparison Of Rnn, Lstm And Gru On Speech Recognition Data, Apeksha Nagesh Shewalkar
Computer Science
Deep Learning [DL] provides an efficient way to train Deep Neural Networks [DNN]. DDNs when used for end-to-end Automatic Speech Recognition [ASR] tasks, could produce more accurate results compared to traditional ASR. Normal feedforward neural networks are not suitable for speech data as they cannot persist past information. Whereas Recurrent Neural Networks [RNNs] can persist past information and handle temporal dependencies. For this project, three recurrent networks, standard RNN, Long Short-Term Memory [LSTM] networks and Gated Recurrent Unit [GRU] networks are evaluated in order to compare their performance on speech data. The data set used for the experiments is a …

Within the past decades, the enterprise-level IT infrastructure in many businesses have grown from a few to thousands of servers, increasing the digital footprints they produce. These digital footprints include access logs that contain information about different events such as activity related to usage patterns, networks and any hostile activity affecting the network. Apache Hadoop has been one of the most standardized frameworks and is used by many Information Technology (IT) companies for analyzing these log files in distributed batch mode using MapReduce programming model. As these access logs include important information related to security and usage patterns, companies are …
Understanding Human Errors To Improve Requirements Quality, Kavitha Manjunath
Understanding Human Errors To Improve Requirements Quality, Kavitha Manjunath
Computer Science
Requirements engineering is the first and perhaps the most important phase of software life cycle. Software faults committed during the requirements development, if left undetected can affect downstream activities. While previous research has developed fault-detection techniques, they are inadequate because they lack an understanding of root cause of faults to be able to avoid its future occurrences. Our research is aimed at helping software engineers understand human errors (i.e., the root cause) that cause faults that are inserted into Software Requirements Specification (SRS). This can help software engineers become more aware and reduce the likelihood of committing human errors during …
In Memory Computation Of Glowworm Swarm Optimization Applied To Multimodal Functions Using Apache Spark, Goutham Miryala
In Memory Computation Of Glowworm Swarm Optimization Applied To Multimodal Functions Using Apache Spark, Goutham Miryala
Computer Science
Glowworm Swarm Optimization (GSO) is one of the optimization techniques, which need to be parallelized in order to evaluate large problems with high-dimensional function spaces. There are various issues involved in the parallelization of any algorithm such as efficient communication among nodes in a cluster, load balancing, automatic node failure recovery, and scalability of nodes at runtime. In this paper, we have implemented the GSO algorithm with the Apache Spark framework. The Spark framework is designed in such a way that one does not need to deal with any parallelization details except the logic of the algorithm itself. For the …
Health Risk Prediction Using Big Medical Data - A Collaborative Filtering-Enhanced Deep Learning Approach, Xin Li
Computer Science
Deep learning has yielded immense success on many different scenarios. With the success in other real world application, it has been applied into big medical data. However, discovering knowledge from these data can be very challenging because they normally contain large amount of unstructured data, they may have lots of missing values, and they can be highly complex and heterogeneous. In these cases the deep neural network itself is not applicable enough. To solve these problems we propose a Collaborative Filtering-Enhanced Deep Learning Approach. In particular, first we estimate missing values based on the information mining from the structured and …

An Integrated Approach To Assess The Impacts Of Zinc Pyrithione At Different Levels Of Biological Organization In Marine Mussels., Lorna J. Dallas, Andrew Turner, Tim P. Bean, Brett P. Lyons, Awadhesh N. Jha
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The mechanisms of sublethal toxicity of the antifouling biocide, zinc pyrithione (ZnPT), have not been well-studied. This investigation demonstrates that 14-d sublethal exposure to ZnPT (0.2 or 2 μM, alongside inorganic Zn and sea water controls) is genotoxic to mussel haemocytes but suggests that this is not caused by oxidative DNA damage as no significant induction of oxidised purines was detected by Fpg-modified comet assay. More ecologically relevant endpoints, including decreased clearance rate (CR), cessation of attachment and decreased tolerance of stress on stress (SoS), also showed significant response to ZnPT exposure. Our integrated approach was underpinned by molecular analyses …

Stock Price Prediction Using Recurrent Neural Networks, Israt Jahan
Computer Science
The stock market is generally very unpredictable in nature. There are many factors that might be responsible to determine the price of a particular stock such as the market trend, supply and demand ratio, global economy, public sentiments, sensitive financial information, earning declaration, historical price and many more. These factors explain the challenge of accurate prediction. But, with the help of new technologies like data mining and machine learning, we can analyze big data and develop an accurate prediction model that avoids some human errors. In this work, the closing prices of specific stocks are predicted from sample data using …
Blood Glucose Prediction Models For Personalized Diabetes Management, Warnakulasuriya Chandima Fernando
Blood Glucose Prediction Models For Personalized Diabetes Management, Warnakulasuriya Chandima Fernando
Computer Science
Effective blood glucose (BG) control is essential for patients with diabetes. This calls for an immediate need to closely keep track of patients' BG level all the time. However, sometimes individual patients may not be able to monitor their BG level regularly due to all kinds of real-life interference. To address this issue, in this paper we propose machine-learning based prediction models that can automatically predict patients BG level based on their historical data and known current status. We take two approaches, one for predicting BG level only using individual's data and second is to use a population data. Our …

For the performance comparison, benchmark testing was used with two scenarios …
Using Human Error Models To Improve The Quality Of Software Requirements, Vaibhav Kumar Anu
Using Human Error Models To Improve The Quality Of Software Requirements, Vaibhav Kumar Anu
Computer Science
Creating high quality software is a primary concern for software development organizations. Researchers have devoted considerable effort in developing quality improvement methods that help software engineers detect faults early in the development lifecycle (when the faults are cheapest to detect and repair). While useful, the available approaches still cannot make sure that Software developers are able to identify all or even a significantly large portion of faults. This is because they do not help software developers identify errors (i.e., underlying cause of faults) that may have led to the insertion of the faults (i.e., manifestation of error). This lack of …
Scalable Algorithms For Mining Maximal Quasi Frequent Subnetworks, Eihab Salah El Radie
Scalable Algorithms For Mining Maximal Quasi Frequent Subnetworks, Eihab Salah El Radie
Computer Science
Frequent graph mining has received considerable attention from researchers. Existing algorithms for frequent subgraph mining do not scale for large networks, and take hours to finish. Mining multiple gene coexpressions networks allows for identifying context-specific modules. Frequent subnetworks represent essential biological modules. In this thesis, we propose two algorithms for mining frequent subgraphs. In the first algorithm, we propose a parallel algorithm for mining maximal frequent subgraphs from gene coexpression networks. Despite the algorithm’s parallelization, it takes much time and it does not allow relaxation. This inspired us to develop a second algorithm that solves those problems. In the second …
Mining Structure Patterns Based On 3d Features In The Protein-Dna And Protein-Protein Complex, Qing Sun
Mining Structure Patterns Based On 3d Features In The Protein-Dna And Protein-Protein Complex, Qing Sun
Computer Science
For a long time, researchers have been searching for the “recognition codes” of protein complexes, which determine what DNA sequence or other protein a protein can bind to. The binding part prediction of protein complexes have important applications in many biological research fields, such as cleavage enzyme design and drug design and so on. Most sequence-based and PWM methods only capture sequence features on the protein interfaces and ignore the crucial spatial attributes of the features. This study investigates the recognition codes from a new angle, in which the preferred binding modes are captured using local structural motifs spanning the …
Pressure-Based Authentication: A Secure And Usable Approach, Zhangyu Meng
Pressure-Based Authentication: A Secure And Usable Approach, Zhangyu Meng
Computer Science
Due to its invisibility feature, pressure force is useful to enhance the security of authentication, especially preventing shoulder surfing. However, it is challenging to memorize a pressure-based password. This paper presents a pressure-based authentication system with personalizing the detection of pressure force, which concretizes a pressure-based password as a decimal number to reduce the effort of memorization, improve the accuracy, and enhance the security. We conducted two user studies to compare the four-pin password with our pressure-based password regarding their usability performance and security evaluation. The results of the first study indicated that the pressure-based password is more secure, but …
Deception In Cyberspace: Con-Man Attack In Cloud Services, Md. Minhaz Chowdhury
Deception In Cyberspace: Con-Man Attack In Cloud Services, Md. Minhaz Chowdhury
Computer Science
A con-man deception appears in services from cyberspace, e.g., in cloud services. A cloud-service provider deceives by repeatedly providing less service than promised and deliberately avoids service monitoring. Such a repeated shortfall is beneficial for the cloud-service provider but victimizes the service’s legitimate consumers. This deception is called a con-man deception. A con-man-resistant trust algorithm is used as a proactive measure against such deception, reducing the deception’s severity on the victim’s end. This trust algorithm detects a con-man deception by evaluating a cloud service’s expected versus actual behavior. This detection application reveals the con-man-resistant trust algorithm’s previously veiled properties. With …

Construction Management and Engineering
Stability of soil plays an important role in the construction of engineering structures like pavements, buildings, embankments, dams, etc. Compaction is the process where proper stability of soil is ensured with required specifications. In this study, efforts have been made to develop empirical equations for Proctor test methods which help in predicting compaction parameters in relation with Atterberg limits for a soil type. The use of empirical equations will help in economy of the project by saving the time involved in performing laboratory activities and associated costs. Results indicate that Plastic limits holds a good correlation and can be utilized …
