From Structure To Activity: Using Centrality Measures To Predict Neuronal Activity, Jack Mc Kay Fletcher, Thomas Wennekers
From Structure To Activity: Using Centrality Measures To Predict Neuronal Activity, Jack Mc Kay Fletcher, Thomas Wennekers
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
It is clear that the topological structure of a neural network somehow determines the activity of the neurons within it. In the present work, we ask to what extent it is possible to examine the structural features of a network and learn something about its activity? Specifically, we consider how the centrality (the importance of a node in a network) of a neuron correlates with its firing rate. To investigate, we apply an array of centrality measures, including In-Degree, Closeness, Betweenness, Eigenvector, Katz, PageRank, Hyperlink-Induced Topic Search (HITS) and NeuronRank to Leaky-Integrate and Fire neural networks with different connectivity schemes. …

In recent years, it has been suggested that social robots have potential as tutors and educators for both children and adults. While robots have been shown to be effective in teaching knowledge and skill-based topics, we wish to explore how social robots can be used to tutor a second language to young children. As language learning relies on situated, grounded and social learning, in which interaction and repeated practice are central, social robots hold promise as educational tools for supporting second language learning. This paper surveys the developmental psychology of second language learning and suggests an agenda to study how …

Ergodicity Of The Llr Method For The Density Of States, Guido Cossu, Biagio Lucini, Roberto Pellegrini, Antonio Rago
Ergodicity Of The Llr Method For The Density Of States, Guido Cossu, Biagio Lucini, Roberto Pellegrini, Antonio Rago
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
The LLR method is a novel algorithm that enables us to evaluate the density of states in lattice gauge theory. We present our study of the ergodicity properties of the LLR algorithm for the model of Yang Mills SU(3). We show that the use of the replica exchange method alleviates significantly the topological freeze-out that severely affects other algorithms.

Tsunami Generation By Combined Fault Rupture And Landsliding, Del Postigo Prieto N Perez, A Raby, Sj Boulton, C Whittaker
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Tsunami generation and propagation mechanisms should be clearly understood in order to inform predictive models and improve coastal community preparedness. Experimental results, supported by mathematical models, could potentially provide valuable input data for standard predictive models of tsunami generation and propagation. A unique set-up has been developed to reproduce a dual-source tsunami generation mechanism. The test-rig replicates a two-dimensional underwater fault rupture followed by a submarine landslide. The set-up was placed in a 20m flume of the COAST laboratory at Plymouth University. The aim of the experiments is to provide quality data for developing a parametrization of the initial conditions …

The Density Of States Approach To The Sign Problem, B Lucini, O Francesconi, M Holzmann, A Rago
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Approaches to the sign problem based on the density of states have been recently revived by the introduction of the LLR algorithm, which allows us to compute the density of states itself with exponential error reduction. In this work, after a review of the generalities of the method, we show recent results for the Bose gas in four dimensions, focussing on the identification of possible systematic errors and on methods of controlling the bias they can introduce in the calculation.

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Canine Emotions: Guidelines For Research, Miiamaaria V. Kujala
Animal Sentience
In the target article, I called for a discussion on the nature and extent of dogs’ emotions. The commentators generally agreed on the existence of dog emotions, but the diversity and quality of dog emotions, as well as the influence of human social cognition on perceiving dog emotions, raised more debate. To respond to the stimulating commentaries, I touch briefly on the philosophy of (canine) mind and discuss further the benefits of comparing cognition across species, secondary emotions, and the shaping of canine emotions by evolution, breeding and experience. I conclude with suggestions for future research guidelines on studies of …

This paper considers two methods for determining the local wave particle kinematics and hydrodynamic forces on an idealised wind turbine monopile in the southern North Sea using sea-state data from Teesside Offshore Wind Farm. An assessment of local flow hydrodynamics is important with regard to safe access of personnel from a crew transfer vessel to a monopile. The hydrodynamic behaviour was calculated using an analytical solution from linear diffraction theory and numerical predictions using OpenFoam, with both slip and no-slip cylinder boundary conditions. Provided the underlying sea state is unidirectional, it was found that close agreement is obtained between analytical …

Current knowledge of yield potential and best agronomic management practices for perennial bioenergy grasses is primarily derived from small-scale and short-term studies, yet these studies inform policy at the national scale. In an effort to learn more about how bioenergy grasses perform across multiple locations and years, the U.S. Department of Energy (US DOE)/Sun Grant Initiative Regional Feedstock Partnership was initiated in 2008. The objectives of the Feedstock Partnership were to (1) provide a wide range of information for feedstock selection (species choice) and management practice options for a variety of regions and (2) develop national maps of potential feedstock …

Irrigation exhibits large variation across producer fields, even within same region and year. A knowledge gap exists relative to factors that explain this variation, in part due to lack of availability of high-quality irrigation data from multiple field-years. This study assessed sources of variation in irrigation using a large database collected during 9 years (2005–2013) from ca. 1400 maize and soybean producer fields in Nebraska, central USA (total of 12,750 field-year observations). The study area is representative of ca. 4.5 million ha of irrigated land sown with maize and soybean. Influence of biophysical (weather, soil, and crop type) and behavioral …

The objectives of this research were to identify alternatives to glyphosate for intra- row (under-trellis) vineyard floor management and to evaluate the potential for intra- row and inter-row (alleyway) groundcovers to reduce vegetative vigor of `Marquette' grapevines (Vitis spp.) in a southeast Nebraska vineyard. The experiment was a randomized factorial design with five intra-row treatments (crushed glass mulch [CG], distillers' grain mulch [DG], creeping red fescue [CRF], non-sprayed control [NSC], and glyphosate [GLY]) and three inter-row treatments (creeping red fescue [CRF], Kentucky bluegrass [KB], and resident vegetation [RV]). Treatments were established in 2010-2011 and measurements were conducted during 2012 …

Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is a high value crop, currently grown in the field and greenhouses in Nebraska. Winter-time, greenhouse studies were conducted during 2015 and 2016, focusing on cultivars of basil grown on a Cap MAT II® system with various levels of fertilizer application. The goal was to select high value cultivars that could be grown in Nebraska greenhouses. The studies used water content, electrical conductivity, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), and relative humidity, air and soil media temperature sensors. Greenhouse systems can be very complex, even though controlled by mechanical heating and cooling. Uncertain or ambiguous environmental and …

In many areas of the US, fresh locally grown berries are not available during the winter. With this in mind, a research study comprised of three experiments was conducted focused on cultivar selection for berry yield, number, sweetness and phytonutrient content. Using a capillary mat system with under bench heating within a double-layer polyethylene greenhouse, strawberries were grown in the Great Plains Region of the US during the winter. During experiment 1, 12 cultivars were grown; berries were weighed, counted and analyzed for sugars and phytonutrients. “Albion” plants produced a high number/mass of berries, had relatively high sugar content but …

Recently, imaged-based approaches have developed rapidly for high-throughput plant phenotyping (HTPP). Imaging reduces a 3D plant into 2D images, which makes the retrieval of plant morphological traits challenging. We developed a novel LiDAR-based phenotyping instrument to generate 3D point clouds of single plants. The instrument combined a LiDAR scanner with a precision rotation stage on which an individual plant was placed. A LabVIEW program was developed to control the scanning and rotation motion, synchronize the measurements from both devices, and capture a 360◦ view point cloud. A data processing pipeline was developed for noise removal, voxelization, triangulation, and plant …

Phenomics is a new area that offers numerous opportunities for its applicability in plant breeding. One possibility is to exploit this type of information obtained from early stages of the growing season by combining it with genomic data. This opens an avenue that can be capitalized by improving the predictive ability of the common prediction models used for genomic prediction. Imagery (canopy coverage) data recorded between days 14–71 using two collection methods (ground information in 2013 and 2014; aerial information in 2014 and 2015) on a soybean nested association mapping population (SoyNAM) was used to calibrate the prediction models together …
