The Effects Of Injectable Trace Mineral Supplements In Donor Cows At The Initiation Of A Superovulation Protocol On Embryo Outcomes And Pregnancy Rates In Recipient Females, Felipe Silva Jan 2018

The Effects Of Injectable Trace Mineral Supplements In Donor Cows At The Initiation Of A Superovulation Protocol On Embryo Outcomes And Pregnancy Rates In Recipient Females, Felipe Silva

Animal Sciences

Concentrations of trace minerals within the body are known to impact reproductive processes. Thus, the current study analyzed the effects of using an injectable trace mineral supplement containing selenium, zinc, copper, and manganese during a superovulation protocol on embryo outcomes in donor beef cows and further effects on pregnancy rate in recipient females. We hypothesized that an injectable trace mineral (TM) supplement provided to cows fed to meet known nutrient requirements would increase TM status and influence superovulation, embryo characteristics, and enhance pregnancy rates. Our findings indicate that the injectable TM increased concentration of Se within the liver. However, superovulatory …

The ACJ process employed multiple judges to compare the design artifacts of 16 first-year engineering majors. The authors conducted an analysis of the reliability and validity of the ACJ method compared to the traditional rubric used to evaluate the project and the performance data of each student’s design prototype. For these …

Study On The Relationship Between Process Plan And Resource Requirement In Additive Manufacturing, Amm Nazmul Ahsan Jan 2018

Study On The Relationship Between Process Plan And Resource Requirement In Additive Manufacturing, Amm Nazmul Ahsan

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Resource consumption in additive manufacturing (AM) is often tied with the physical attribute of the fabricated part. Thus, optimizing the processes plan for minimum part fabrication resource requirement is a matter of great interest. In this thesis, the hierarchical nature of the AM process plan steps are emphasized and both build direction and material deposition direction are optimized while considering the resource requirement. A novel combined two-step optimization methodology is presented to determine optimal build direction for the object and material deposition direction for layers while considering minimum contour plurality, surface quality, build height, fabrication factor, and layer contour concavity …

Plant Sciences

White mold caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorumi s one of the most devastating diseases infecting field pea (Pisum sativum L.) which causes severe yield loss worldwide. Population 17 (Lifter/ PI240515), and Population 19 (PI169603/ Medora) were developed by single seed descent and screened by greenhouse evaluation and detached stem assay to identify potential sources of white mold resistance. Twenty-two partial resistant inbred lines were identified with short internode which met at least two resistance criteria based on lesion expansion inhibition (LEI) and nodal transmission inhibition (NTI). To find SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphism) responsible for white mold resistance, Populations 17 and 19 …

Effect Of Different Alumina Supports On Performance Of Cobalt Fischer-Tropsch Catalysts, Thomas H. Fletcher Jan 2018

Effect Of Different Alumina Supports On Performance Of Cobalt Fischer-Tropsch Catalysts, Thomas H. Fletcher

Faculty Publications

Four identically-prepared 20 wt% cobalt/0.15 wt% ruthenium Fischer-Tropsch catalysts, supported on different aluminas, were synthesized by incipient wetness impregnation, characterized, and compared based on their performance under standard Fischer-Tropsch synthesis conditions. Three alumina supports were obtained from commercial sources (Sasol, St. Gobain, and Alfa Aesar), while the fourth was made using a published technique that included 5 wt% silica. The silica-stabilized alumina catalyst produced superior Fischer-Tropsch rates of 49 mmol CO/gcat h, compared to the other catalysts on the commercial supports with rates of 26–39 mmol CO/gcat h. The improved performance of the silica-stabilized alumina support compared to the commercially …

Polysyllabic Shortening In Speakers Exposed To Two Languages, Todd A. Gibson, Connie Summers Jan 2018

Polysyllabic Shortening In Speakers Exposed To Two Languages, Todd A. Gibson, Connie Summers

Faculty Publications

Polysyllabic shortening is used to maintain stress-timed rhythm in English, but used negligibly in Spanish. It is unknown how polysyllabic shortening is influenced when individuals are exposed to one language that employs it and one that does not. We calculated polysyllabic shortening for 35 functionally monolingual English-speaking adults and 19 relatively balanced Spanish–English bilingual peers who repeated English and Spanish nonwords. Results showed that speech motor patterns learned early in life might be sufficient to block cross-linguistic transfer of polysyllabic shortening despite limited language proficiency, and bilingual speakers appear to signal membership in the majority language by increasing polysyllabic shortening.

Phosphorus Dynamics And Crop Productivity In Bakken Crude-Oil Remediated Soils, Samantha Jo Croat Jan 2018

Phosphorus Dynamics And Crop Productivity In Bakken Crude-Oil Remediated Soils, Samantha Jo Croat

Soil Science

Thermal desorption (TD), a remediation method used to remove hydrocarbons from contaminated soils, may cause changes in soil properties that threaten soil function and plant productivity. The goal of this research is to better understand the effect that TD treatment has on soils intended for agricultural use. A series of soil phosphorus (P) sorption and desorption experiments were conducted on soils before and after TD treatment to determine P availability for plant uptake and risk for run-off. TD-treated soils retained more P, likely due to mineral transformations of Fe- and Al-oxides. In addition, a three-year field study using mixtures of …

Building A Predictive Model On State Of Good Repair By Machine Learning Algorithm On Public Transportation Rolling Stock, Dilip Mistry Jan 2018

Building A Predictive Model On State Of Good Repair By Machine Learning Algorithm On Public Transportation Rolling Stock, Dilip Mistry

Transportation Logistics and Finance

Achieving and maintaining public transportation rolling stocks in a state of good repair is very crucial to provide safe and reliable services to riders. Besides, transit agencies who seek federal grants must keep their transit assets in a state of good repair. Therefore, transit agencies need an intelligent predictive model for analyzing their transportation rolling stocks, finding out the current condition, and predicting when they need to be replaced or rehabilitated. Since many transit agencies do not have good analytical tools for predicting the service life of vehicles, this simple predictive model would be a valuable resource for their state …

Ontological Deep Data Cleaning, Scott N. Woodfield, Spencer Seeger, Samuel Litster, Stephen W. Liddle, Brenden Grace, David W. Embley

Faculty Publications

Analytical applications such as forensics, investigative journalism, and genealogy require deep data cleaning in which applicationdependent semantic errors and inconsistencies are detected and resolved. To facilitate deep data cleaning, the application is modeled ontologically, and real-world crisp and fuzzy constraints are specified. Conceptualmodel- based declarative specification enables rapid development and modification of the usually large number of constraints. Field tests show the prototype’s ability to detect errors and either resolve them or provide guidance for user-involved resolution. A user study also shows the value of declarative specification in deep data cleaning applications.

Cement Changes And Their Effects On Shrinkage And Durability Of Concrete, Achintyamugdha Surendra Sharma Jan 2018

Cement Changes And Their Effects On Shrinkage And Durability Of Concrete, Achintyamugdha Surendra Sharma

Engineering

In this work, the effects of different cementitious combinations on drying shrinkage and durability of concrete are investigated. Shrinkage is caused due to loss of water from concrete due to evaporation. Cement paste is the most vulnerable part of concrete to shrinkage. As concrete consists of cement paste and aggregates, the latter pose as restraints to the shrinking paste. As a result, tensile stresses are formed thereby leading to the formation of cracks. Cracks in concrete are responsible for the ingress of deleterious chemical ions such as, Chloride and Sulfate ions, which may form expansive compounds. Chloride ions also induce …

Computational Model For Behavior Shaping As An Adaptive Health Intervention Strategy, Vincent Berardi, Ricardo Carretero-González, Neil E. Klepeis, Sahar Ghanipoor Machiani, Arash Jahangiri, John Bellettiere, Melbourne Hovell

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Adaptive behavioral interventions that automatically adjust in real-time to participants’ changing behavior, environmental contexts, and individual history are becoming more feasible as the use of real-time sensing technology expands. This development is expected to improve shortcomings associated with traditional behavioral interventions, such as the reliance on imprecise intervention procedures and limited/short-lived effects. JITAI adaptation strategies often lack a theoretical foundation. Increasing the theoretical fidelity of a trial has been shown to increase effectiveness. This research explores the use of shaping, a well-known process from behavioral theory for engendering or maintaining a target behavior, as a JITAI adaptation strategy. A computational …

Entropy, Order, And Agency: The Cognitive Basis Of The Link Between Agents And Order, Adena Schachner, Minju Kim Jan 2018

Entropy, Order, And Agency: The Cognitive Basis Of The Link Between Agents And Order, Adena Schachner, Minju Kim

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

People often believe that orderly structures were created by agents. We examine the cognitive basis of this tendency, asking if learned associations or causal reasoning drives us to link order with agents. Causal reasoning predicts that knowledge of an alternative physical-mechanical cause should ‘explain away’ orderliness, weakening the link with agents. In a preregistered experiment, we manipulated the context to provide (or not provide) a physical-mechanical explanation for orderly outcomes, and participants judged if an object or agent had been present. We compared outcomes differing in (a)levels of orderliness and (b)whether context provided an alternative explanation. We found that environmental …
