Modeling And Experimental Investigations On Particle Dynamic Behaviors In Laser 3d Printing With Blown Powder, Wei Li Jan 2018

Modeling And Experimental Investigations On Particle Dynamic Behaviors In Laser 3d Printing With Blown Powder, Wei Li

Doctoral Dissertations

"Pre-mixed powder is frequently-used powder supply to fabricate Functional Gradient Material (FGM) by Laser 3D printing, which is also called Laser Metal Deposition (LMD). The deposited FGM composition is expected to be similar or same as supplied powder mixture. However, because pre-mixed powder has different particle densities and particle sizes, the caused particle acceleration differences can result in the separation in powder mixture. Up to now, there was no study focused on pre-mixed powders' flow behavior in LMD. The current research aims to investigate the flow behaviors of pre-mixed powder supplied for LMD through both experimental and modeling approaches. In …

Empirical Correlations Between Rock Cutting Parameters And Excavated Rock Surface Rebound Hardness, Azupuri Germanus Ayerikujei Kaba Jan 2018

Empirical Correlations Between Rock Cutting Parameters And Excavated Rock Surface Rebound Hardness, Azupuri Germanus Ayerikujei Kaba

Doctoral Dissertations

"In field excavation, cutting tools operate on rock surfaces damaged from previous tool pass, yet, average intact rock properties are often used in field project estimations. This can result in overestimation of excavation time and cost. The ability to accurately correlate the damaged rock properties to the excavation parameters means more reliable estimates of project completion time and costs, and hence improved the application of mechanical excavation technology to a wider range of civil and mining industries.

The purpose of this research was to better understand the relationship between rock cutting parameters and the excavated rock surface hardness during mechanical …

Correlation Between Delay Time And Measured Concentration And Concentration Uncertainty By Neutron Activation Analysis, James Thomas Seman Jan 2018

Correlation Between Delay Time And Measured Concentration And Concentration Uncertainty By Neutron Activation Analysis, James Thomas Seman

Doctoral Dissertations

"For the last several decades, it has been apparent that new methods of identifying explosives can help investigators trace their origins. One way to identify an explosive is through the use of taggants: materials added to a product that encodes information about the product such as when it was manufactured.

This research investigates the survivability of a new identification taggant called the Nuclear Barcode that overcomes some of the downfalls that have been identified in prior taggants. The Nuclear Barcode encodes information as a unique combination of concentrations of rare earths (Ho, Eu, Sm, Lu, and Dy) and precious metals …

Guayule Plant Extracts As Binder Modifiers In Flexible (Asphalt) Pavement Mixtures, Steven Michael Lusher Jan 2018

Guayule Plant Extracts As Binder Modifiers In Flexible (Asphalt) Pavement Mixtures, Steven Michael Lusher

Doctoral Dissertations

"The guayule (pronounced, 'why-YOO-lee') plant is a woody perennial shrub that is native to areas of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, and is a well-documented source of high-quality natural rubber. The U.S. needs a domestic source of natural rubber to allay concerns about its future availability. Cultivation of guayule in North America has been attempted many times since the late 19th century, and companies, including major tire manufacturers, are again investing in guayule research. However, full-scale commercialization of guayule rubber needs established markets for the two basic by-products of guayule rubber extraction: the plant resins (primarily non-rubber compounds) …

A Multiple Scattering Method To Study The Cable Harness Inside A Vehicle Shell, Yansheng Wang Jan 2018

A Multiple Scattering Method To Study The Cable Harness Inside A Vehicle Shell, Yansheng Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation contains three major parts. In the first part, a generalized multi-conductor transmission line (GMTL) method is proposed to model a cable harness. In the GMTL method, all wires of the cable harness take the infinity as the reference. In such a way, the GMTL method takes into account not only the transmission-line mode but also the antenna-mode current on the cable harness. Further, by employing the GMTL method and the mixed-potential integral equations (MPIE) method in a multiple scattering (MS) procedure, it enables an efficient and accurate approach to evaluate the current distribution on a cable harness with …

For those purposes, this research focused on the innovation of 3D electrode via additive manufacturing, and the development of fast and accurate physical based models to predict the battery status for control purposes. Paper I proposed a novel …

The Separation Of Shear-Driven Liquid Films From A Sharp Corner, Zahra Sadeghizadeh Jan 2018

The Separation Of Shear-Driven Liquid Films From A Sharp Corner, Zahra Sadeghizadeh

Doctoral Dissertations

"The separation of shear-driven liquid films occurs in many engineering applications such as port fuel injected engines, demisters, and gas transfer lines. Despite the importance of this problem, the details of the interaction between operating parameters such as liquid flow rate, gas velocities and liquid film properties on the forces at the expanding corner are still not clear. To enhance the insight on the complicated interaction between the gas and liquid phases, the shear-driven liquid flow around a corner has been studied both experimentally and analytically in this work. The effect of the complex liquid film structure on liquid mass …

Virtual Reality Exceptionalism, Gilad Yadin Jan 2018

Virtual Reality Exceptionalism, Gilad Yadin

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Virtual reality is here. In just a few years, the technology moved from science fiction to the Internet, from specialized research facilities to living rooms. These new virtual reality environments are connected, collaborative, and social-built to deliver a subjective psychological effect that believably simulates spatial physical reality. Cognitive research shows that this effect is powerful enough that virtual reality users act and interact in ways that mirror real-world social and moral norms and behavior.

Contemporary cyberlaw theory is largely based on the notion that cyberspace is exceptional enough to warrant its own specific rules. This premise, a descendant of early …

A Free Ride: Data Brokers'rent-Seeking Behavior And The Future Of Data Inequality, Krishnamurty Muralidhar, Laura Palk Jan 2018

A Free Ride: Data Brokers'rent-Seeking Behavior And The Future Of Data Inequality, Krishnamurty Muralidhar, Laura Palk

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Historically, researchers obtained data from independent studies and government data. However, as public outcry for privacy regarding the government's maintenance of data has increased, the discretionary release of government data has decreased or become so anonymized that its relevance is limited. Research necessarily requires access to complete and accurate data. As such, researchers are turning to data brokers for the same, and often more, data than they can obtain from the government. Data brokers base their products and services on data gathered from a variety of free public sources and via the government-created Internet. Data brokers then recategorize the existing …

Data At The Docks: Modernizing International Trade Law For The Digital Economy, Andrew D. Mitchell, Neha Mishra Jan 2018

Data At The Docks: Modernizing International Trade Law For The Digital Economy, Andrew D. Mitchell, Neha Mishra

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

The World Trade Organization (WTO) has been slow so far in responding to the various challenges arising from the integration of electronic commerce into cross-border trading activities. This slow response in the multilateral system is largely attributable to the complex, multifaceted nature of digital trade or electronic commerce, coupled with the conflict among countries on issues of Internet regulation and digital development. Nonetheless, international trade agreements, particularly at the WTO, play an important role in the creation of a secure, predictable, and trustworthy global regulatory framework for digital trade, and therefore, need to be reformed in a timely and meaningful …

Evil Nudges, Michal Lavi Jan 2018

Evil Nudges, Michal Lavi

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

The seminal book Nudge by Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein demonstrates that policy makers can prod behavioral changes. A nudge is "any aspect of the choice architecture that alters people's behavior in a predictable way without forbidding any options or significantly changing their economic incentives." This type of strategy, and the notion of libertarian paternalism at its base, prompted discussions and objections. Academic literature tends to focus on the positive potential of nudges and neglects to address libertarian paternalism that does not promote the welfare of individuals and third parties, but rather infringes on it-a concept this Article refers to …

The Limits Of International Copyright Exceptions For Developing Countries, Ruth L. Okediji Jan 2018

The Limits Of International Copyright Exceptions For Developing Countries, Ruth L. Okediji

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

The relationship between intellectual property (IP) protection and economic development is not better understood today than it was five decades ago at the height of the independence era in the Global South. Development indicators in many developing and least-developed countries reflect poorly in precisely the areas that are most closely associated with copyright law's objectives, such as promoting democratic governance, facilitating a robust marketplace of ideas, fostering domestic markets in cultural goods, and improving access to knowledge. Moreover, evidence suggests that copyright law has not been critical to the business models of the creative sectors in leading emerging markets. These …

What Can The Social Emotions Of Dogs Teach Us About Human Emotions?, Dean Mobbs Jan 2018

What Can The Social Emotions Of Dogs Teach Us About Human Emotions?, Dean Mobbs

Animal Sentience

It has long been believed that social emotions such as guilt and jealousy are only expressed in humans. In the case of jealousy, its adaptive value has been linked to the prevention of sexual infidelity or fairness. So why would dogs feel jealousy? I suggest that understanding how social emotions have been bred into dogs can help us understand our own emotions, including their functionality — and potentially their mechanisms.

Animal Sentience

Recent empirical studies have reported evidence that many aquatic species, including fish, cephalopods and crustaceans, have the capacity for nociception and pain, and that their welfare should be taken into consideration. Some sceptics, rejecting the precautionary principle, have denied that any study demonstrates pain or other aspects of sentience in fish. This target article discusses some of the scientific shortcomings of these critiques through a detailed analysis of a study exploring nociception and analgesia in larval zebrafish.

Ergodicity Of The Llr Method For The Density Of States, Guido Cossu, Biagio Lucini, Roberto Pellegrini, Antonio Rago Jan 2018

Ergodicity Of The Llr Method For The Density Of States, Guido Cossu, Biagio Lucini, Roberto Pellegrini, Antonio Rago

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The LLR method is a novel algorithm that enables us to evaluate the density of states in lattice gauge theory. We present our study of the ergodicity properties of the LLR algorithm for the model of Yang Mills SU(3). We show that the use of the replica exchange method alleviates significantly the topological freeze-out that severely affects other algorithms.
