Delineation Of A Coal Combustion Residue Landfill And Underlying Karst Subsurface In Southwest Missouri Using Ert And Masw Surveys, Ruobai Zhao
Doctoral Dissertations
"The safe containment of coal combustion residual (CCR) in landfills was addressed by the U.S. Environment Protection Agency (EPA) CCR rule published in 2015. The new rule affects new and existing U.S. based CCR landfills in terms of implementing safeguard systems for safe disposal and contamination control. Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) data were acquired across and in proximity to a CCR landfill in southwest Missouri, USA, with the intent to identify potential karst features and seepage pathways.
Electrical resistivity tomography data were acquired using an automated 8-channel resistivity meter and multichannel analysis of …

A Relationship Of Reciprocal Influence: Singapore Company Law And The Economy, Vincent Ooi, Cheng Han Tan
A Relationship Of Reciprocal Influence: Singapore Company Law And The Economy, Vincent Ooi, Cheng Han Tan
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
A strong reciprocal relationship has existed between Singapore Company Law (“SCL”) and the economy since Independence in 1965. Swift Parliamentary responses to economic events and successful implementation of Government policies has made it possible to clearly attribute cause and effect to statutory amendments and economic events in turn, proving the reciprocal relationship between the two. The first theme of this paper seeks to explain the fundamental characteristics of SCL that have resulted in such an unusually strong reciprocal relationship: the 1) Autochthonous nature of SCL; 2) Responsive nature of legislation; and 3) Government control at multiple levels of implementation. The …

The main goal of this research was the preparation and evaluation of the mechanical properties, in vitro biodegradability and cytocompatibility, of natural chitosan/hydroxyapatite/nano magnetite (nano-Fe3O4) composite. Different ratios of these components were investigated, including chitosan/hydroxyapatite: 4/4 (S1), chitosan/hydroxyapatite: 4/6 (S2), and chitosan/hydroxyapatite: 6/4 (S3). Mechanical properties of fabricated composites were examined using bending and compression tests before immersion, and after 2 and 9 weeks of immersion in the Ringer's solution. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was employed for observing the bending fracture surface and analyzing the degradation morphology. Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC) were also cultured on the samples in order …
Polar Gigantism And Sea Spiders: A Study Of Respiratory Scaling, Steven Joseph Lane
Polar Gigantism And Sea Spiders: A Study Of Respiratory Scaling, Steven Joseph Lane
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
All animals must breathe to survive. The types of primary respiratory structures vary across the metazoa, and the overall size and components of these structures scale with body size. The scaling of respiratory structures has been well studied in vertebrate lungs and gills, but very few, if any studies, have looked at it in terms of cutaneous gas exchange, the process where oxygen moves across the outer integument via diffusion. My dissertation has sought to fill this gap in knowledge by studying animals that use cutaneous respiration, and my work has determined both how the components of their respiratory surfaces …

The Enduring Importance Of Wildness: Shepherding Wilderness Through The Anthropocene, Patrick Ram Kelly
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Wilderness and wildness have long been essential values at the heart of American conservation. Both have played critical roles in the formation of environmental ethics, providing a conceptual foundation for the belief that the non-human natural world is valuable for its own sake (Nash, 2001). After grounding and inspiring much of 20th century environmentalism, their influence in the current century has grown increasingly tentative. The arrival of what some have called the “Anthropocene epoch” – a term meant to capture the planetary scale impacts of human activity – now threatens the continued viability and relevance of wilderness and wildness to …

The Effects Of Common Methods Of Soft Tissue Removal On Skeletal Remains: A Comparative Analysis, Emily Silverman
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The removal of soft tissue from skeletal remains is a process familiar to a wide array of scientific fields and the methods used to perform it are likewise numerous yet inconsistent. In forensic investigations and crime labs across the country, there lacks a standardization for this process. This lack of standardization pairs with a distinct lack of literature on the potential benefits and risks associated with each method as well as basic information on the proper amount of additives, temperatures, or time estimations. In a forensic context, human remains may be the only evidence available, which makes any damage or …

Containment Control Of Heterogeneous Systems With Non-Autonomous Leaders: A Distributed Optimal Model Reference Approach, Yongliang Yang, Shusen Cheng, Yixin Yin, Donald C. Wunsch
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents a distributed optimal model reference adaptive control approach for solving containment control of heterogeneous multi-agent systems (MASs) with non-autonomous leaders. First, a fully distributed adaptive observer is designed to provide for each agent the desired reference trajectory by estimating the convex hull spanned by leaders. The distributed observer dynamics serves as a reference model for each follower to synchronize. The global communication graph information or the leader dynamics is not required to design the observer. In contrast to existing model reference adaptive controllers (MRAC) for single-agent systems and containment control solutions for MASs, the proposed MRAC approach …

This paper designs a novel geometry-conformal antenna for Magnetic Induction (MI)-based subsea wireless communications for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV). The designed tri-directional antennas can be wrapped directly on the surface of AUVs, such that the AUVs fluid dynamics are well maintained to ensure power efficiency of the vehicles. In addition, ferrite materials are added between the MI antenna and the metallic body surface of the AUVs to overcome the shielding effect and enhance the MI signal strength. The designed MI communication system is implemented in hardware and the effectiveness of the geometry-conformal MI antenna is demonstrated through COMSOL simulations and …

Machine Learning Based Neural Network Solving Methods For The Fdtd Method, He Ming Yao, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, two novel computational processes are proposed to solve Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) based on machine learning deep neural networks. The field and boundary conditions are employed to establish recurrent neural network FDTD (RNN-FDTD) model and convolution neural network FDTD (CNN-FDTD) model respectively. Numerical examples from scalar wave equations are provided to benchmark the performance of the proposed methods. The results demonstrate that the newly proposed methods could solve FDTD steps with satisfactory accuracy. According to our knowledge, these are unreported new approaches for machine learning based FDTD solving methods.

Subspace Clustering Using Ensembles Of K-Subspaces, John Lipor, David Hong, Yan Shuo Tan, Laura Balzano
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Subspace clustering is the unsupervised grouping of points lying near a union of low-dimensional linear subspaces. Algorithms based directly on geometric properties of such data tend to either provide poor empirical performance, lack theoretical guarantees, or depend heavily on their initialization. We present a novel geometric approach to the subspace clustering problem that leverages ensembles of the K-subspaces (KSS) algorithm via the evidence accumulation clustering framework. Our algorithm, referred to as ensemble K-subspaces (EKSS), forms a co-association matrix whose (i,j)th entry is the number of times points i and j are clustered together by several runs of KSS with random …

Interventions to Increase Safety Event Reporting by Unlicensed Patient Care Technicians
Abstract
Background
Patient safety is an area of focus for healthcare providers, consumers, and regulatory agencies in the United States. To maintain a culture of safety and high reliability within the hospital setting all team members must engage in reporting safety events. Unlicensed patient care technicians (PCTs) are integral members of the care team however the frequency of reporting of safety events by these caregivers is less than other roles.
Purpose
The goal of this project was to increase the frequency of reporting by unlicensed patient care technicians by …

Applying Convolutional Neural Networks For The Source Reconstruction, He Ming Yao, Wei E.I. Sha, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper proposes a novel source reconstruction method (SRM) based on the convolutional neural network algorithm. The conventional SRM method usually requires the scattered field data oversampled compared to that of target object grids. To achieve higher accuracy, the conventional SRM numerical system is highly singular. To overcome these difficulties, we model the equivalent source reconstruction process using the machine learning. The equivalent sources of the target are constructed by a convolutional neural networks (ConvNets). It allows us to employ less scattered field samples or radar cross section (RCS) data. And the ill-conditioned numerical system is effectively avoided. Numerical examples …

Towards Designing Energy Efficient Symmetric Key Protocols, Sai Raghu Talluri
Towards Designing Energy Efficient Symmetric Key Protocols, Sai Raghu Talluri
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Energy consumption by various modern symmetric key encryption protocols (DES,
3-DES, AES and, Blowfish) is studied from an algorithmic perspective. The work
is directed towards redesigning or modifying the underlying algorithms for these
protocols to make them consume less energy than they currently do. This research
takes the approach of reducing energy consumption by parallelizing the
consecutive memory accesses of symmetric key encryption algorithms. To achieve
parallelization, an existing energy complexity model is applied to symmetric key
encryption algorithms. Inspired by the popular DDR3 architecture, the model assumes
that main memory is divided into multiple banks, each of which can …

The Past, Present, And Future Of The U.S. Patent System, Megan M. La Belle
Scholarly Articles
This essay discusses the evolution of the U.S. patent system over the past decade. It explains how various rules established by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the appellate court with exclusive jurisdiction over patent cases, created an environment that heavily favored patent owners and disadvantaged accused infringers. In response, Congress and the courts set out to reform our patent system and implemented a host of changes, most notably the passage of comprehensive legislation known as the America Invents Act (AIA) in 2011. Since the AIA, the patent system in the U.S. has certainly changed. Indeed, some …

The Indecency And Injustice Of Section 230 Of The Communications Decency Act, Mary Graw Leary
Scholarly Articles
Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act is a 1996 law wholly inadequate to address 21st Century problems. The most egregious example of this is online sex trafficking, which was allowed not only to exist, but also to thrive due, in large part, to §230. This Article examines the development of the jurisprudence regarding online advertising of sex-trafficking victims and juxtaposes the forces that created § 230 with those preventing its timely amendment. This Article argues that, although § 230 was never intended to create a regime of absolute immunity for defendant websites, a perverse interpretation of the non-sex …
A Bayesian Network Approach To Battery Aging In Electric Vehicle Transportation And Grid Integration, Mehdi Jafari
A Bayesian Network Approach To Battery Aging In Electric Vehicle Transportation And Grid Integration, Mehdi Jafari
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Nowadays, batteries in electric vehicles (EVs) are facing a variety of tasks in their connection to the power grid in addition to the main task, driving. All of these tasks play a very significant role in the battery aging, but they are highly variable due to the change in the driver behavior, grid connection availability and weather conditions. The effect of these external factors in the battery degradation have been studied in literature by mostly deterministic and some stochastic approaches, but limited to specific cases.
In this dissertation, first, a large-scale deterministic approach is implemented to evaluate the effect of …
An Injectable Thermosensitive Biodegradable Hydrogel Embedded With Snap Containing Plla Microparticles For Sustained Nitric Oxide (No) Delivery For Wound Healing, Nikhil Mittal
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
After injury, wound healing is a complex sequential cascade of events essential for the proper recovery of the wound without the scar formation. Nitric oxide (NO) is a small, endogenous free-radical gas with antimicrobial, vasodilating and growth factor stimulating properties. NO has wide biomedical application especially in wound healing however, its usability is hindered due its administration problem as it is highly unstable.
In this work, poly (l-lactic acid) microparticles encapsulated with NO donor S-nitroso-N-acetyl-D-penicillamine (SNAP) were prepared using water-in-oil-water double emulsion solvent evaporation method for controlled delivery for NO at the specific site. The NO release from SNAP-PLLA microparticles …
