Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Plagiarism is an act that is capable of tarnishing the image of universities and postgraduate students need to avoid it. However, interactions with postgraduate students revealed that some of them did not consider some acts that constitute plagiarism as such due to ignorance. Besides, literature search showed that due attention appears not to have been paid to the issue of plagiarism policy in most universities in Nigeria. Thus, this study empirically examined the awareness of plagiarism acts and policy by postgraduate students in University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Descriptive survey research method was used and the study population comprised 26,503 postgraduate …

Quantifying The Effect Of Tropospheric Delay On Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar And Its Application To Crustal Deformation, Emre Havazli Dec 2018

Quantifying The Effect Of Tropospheric Delay On Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar And Its Application To Crustal Deformation, Emre Havazli

Open Access Dissertations

Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) is a powerful tool to detect and monitor ground deformation. It has been widely used to study deformation processes caused by tectonic (e.g. earthquakes, volcanoes) and non-tectonic (e.g. sinkholes, city subsidence) processes using phase differences between two acquisitions over the same area. However, there are several limitations for InSAR method. Tropospheric phase delay is currently the major source of error in InSAR. This study explores the detection limits of InSAR and quantifies the effect of tropospheric delay on In-SAR time series products, such as velocity fields, using simulation of tropospheric delay approach (Chapter 3) and, …

Automobility And The Future Of Transport, Lukas Koch

English Department: Traveling American Modernism (ENG 366, Fall 2018)

This article explores the history of automobility as ideology, its effect on individuals and its possible future. In the USA in the early 20th century the automobile served to solve the crisis of individualism, created by Taylorism and the rise of the scientific method. To the people of the time the car was associated with freedom and individuality. Freedom through the automobile however was and would never be universally accessible. Furthermore examining the real life consequences of increasing mobility reveals unforeseen effects, mainly pollution, traffic and fragmentation of society. This paper proposes adoption of programs favoring sustainable modes of transportation …

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

This study reports the synchronization between the chromospheric and photometric variability at time-scale of about 1.6–1.8 yr as observed for the young, rapidly rotating solar analogue HD 30495. In addition, HD 30495 may be presenting evidence of surface differential rotation at time-scales of about 11 d and 21 d, as well as the sunspot-like decadal cycles at 11–12 yr or so. We apply a new gapped wavelet method of time–frequency analysis for studying the variability in a new composite of the chromospheric S-index (1967–2018) and the longest photometric Δ(b + y)/2 index (1993–2018). We discuss and interpret our results in …

Uncovering The Role Of Propagule Pressure In Determining Establishment Success Using A Synthetic Biology Approach, Michael D. Dressler Dec 2018

Uncovering The Role Of Propagule Pressure In Determining Establishment Success Using A Synthetic Biology Approach, Michael D. Dressler

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

The spread of invasive species poses a major ecological and economical threat. Consequently there are ongoing efforts to develop a generalizable mechanism to predict establishment success of non-native species. One proposed mechanism to predict establishment success is propagule pressure, which is defined as the number of individuals introduced at a given time. Although some studies have demonstrated a positive correlation between propagule pressure and establishment success, others have not, and the effect of propagule pressure on establishment success remains unclear. To address this challenge, a strain of bacteria engineered with an Allee effect, a growth dynamic that is often associated …

Assessment Of Different Methods For Shadow Detection In High-Resolution Optical Imagery And Evaluation Of Shadow Impact On Calculation Of Ndvi And Evapotranspiration, Mahyar Aboutalebi, Alfonso F. Torres-Rua, William P. Kustas, Héctor Nieto, Calvin Coopmans, Mac Mckee

AggieAir Publications

Significant efforts have been made recently in the application of high-resolution remote sensing imagery (i.e., sub-meter) captured by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for precision agricultural applications for high-value crops such as wine grapes. However, at such high resolution, shadows will appear in the optical imagery effectively reducing the reflectance and emission signal received by imaging sensors. To date, research that evaluates procedures to identify the occurrence of shadows in imagery produced by UAVs is limited. In this study, the performance of four different shadow detection methods used in satellite imagery was evaluated for high-resolution UAV imagery collected over a California …

Recoupling Fire And Grazing Reduces Wildland Fuel Loads On Rangelands, Heath D. Starns, Samuel D. Fuhlendore, R. Dwayne Elmore, Dirac L. Twidwell Jr, Eric T. Thacker, Torre J. Hovick, Barney Luttbeg Dec 2018

Recoupling Fire And Grazing Reduces Wildland Fuel Loads On Rangelands, Heath D. Starns, Samuel D. Fuhlendore, R. Dwayne Elmore, Dirac L. Twidwell Jr, Eric T. Thacker, Torre J. Hovick, Barney Luttbeg

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Fire suppression and exclusion, the historically dominant paradigm of fire management, has resulted in major modifications of fire-dependent ecosystems worldwide. These changes are partially credited with a recent increase in wildfire number and extent, as well as more extreme fire behavior. Fire and herbivory historically interacted, and research has shown that the interaction creates a unique mosaic of vegetation heterogeneity that each disturbance alone does not create. Because fire and grazing have largely been decoupled in modern times, the degree to which the interaction affects fuels and fire regimes has not yet been quantified. We evaluated effects of fire-only and …

Performance Analysis Of Feature Selection Techniques For Support Vector Machine And Its Application For Lung Nodule Detection, Barath Narayanan, Russell C. Hardie, Temesguen Messay Kebede

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Lung cancer typically exhibits its presence with the formation of pulmonary nodules. Computer Aided Detection (CAD) of such nodules in CT scans would be of valuable help in lung cancer screening. Typical CAD system is comprised of a candidate detector and a feature-based classifier. In this research, we study and explore the performance of Support Vector Machine (SVM) based on a large set of features. We study the performance of SVM as a function of the number of features. Our results indicate that SVM is more robust and computationally faster with a large set of features and less prone to …

Facepet: Enhancing Bystanders' Facial Privacy With Smart Wearables/Internet Of Things, Alfredo J. Perez, Sherali Zeadally, Luis Y. Matos Garcia, Jaouad A. Mouloud, Scott Griffith

Information Science Faculty Publications

Given the availability of cameras in mobile phones, drones and Internet-connected devices, facial privacy has become an area of major interest in the last few years, especially when photos are captured and can be used to identify bystanders’ faces who may have not given consent for these photos to be taken and be identified. Some solutions to protect facial privacy in photos currently exist. However, many of these solutions do not give a choice to bystanders because they rely on algorithms that de-identify photos or protocols to deactivate devices and systems not controlled by bystanders, thereby being dependent on the …

Efficient injection of charge carriers from the contacts into the semiconductor layer is crucial for achieving high-performance organic devices. The potential drop necessary to accomplish this process yields a resistance associated with the contacts, namely the contact resistance. A large contact resistance can limit the operation of devices and even lead to inaccuracies in the extraction of the device parameters. Here, we demonstrate a simple and efficient strategy for reducing the contact resistance in organic thin-film transistors by more than an order of magnitude by creating high work function domains at the surface of the injecting electrodes to promote channels …

Ascorbic Acid Degradation In Cut Lemon Packaged Using Oxygen Scavenging Active Film During Storage, Kurniawan Yuniarto, Setyo Purwanto, Bruce Ari Welt, Anang Lastriyanto

Makara Journal of Technology

Oxygen scavenging active film can be used to prevent diffusion of free oxygen due to the action of permeation mechanism. In this study, biodegradable oxygen scavenging plastic film was designed by incorporating an antioxidant agent into plasticized polylactic acid or PLA-PEG (PPLA). Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) was added at different concentrations into the matrix of the PPLA film using a direct casting method to produce oxygen scavenging active film. The antiradical activity of the oxygen scavenging active film was observed, which could be applied for preventing vitamin C degradation in cut lemon during storage. The antiradical activity of the active film …

Calcareous Nannofossil Biostratigraphy And Paleoecology Of The Fort Hays Limestone Of Western Kansas, Western Interior Basin (Wib), Bryan Hermosillo

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Investigations of Upper Cretaceous hemi-pelagic sediments from the Western Interior Basin suggest that high surface water fertility caused increased production of biogenic carbonate, resulting in the deposition of limestone. We examined calcareous nannofossils from the Turonian/Coniacian Fort Hays Member of the Niobrara Formation to evaluate the correlation between nannofossil surface water fertility proxies and associated lithology. Our paleoecology results indicate that oligotrophic surface water conditions were present during limestone deposition. This stands at odds with existing depositional models for the Western Interior Seaway (WIS). Paleoecological data within the interbedded marls was artificially skewed due to the prevalence of etching caused …
