Searching For Identity: Connecting Students To Young Adult Literature In The Classroom Through Language, Samantha Correia Dec 2018

Searching For Identity: Connecting Students To Young Adult Literature In The Classroom Through Language, Samantha Correia

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Young adult literature largely influences the cultures and the lives of young people; often these popular young adult novels become well-known as they are made into movies and are in high demand. These novels are not just for young adults; these texts can be read at any age and have accessible themes that many people can relate to. However, in this research, young adult literature will be discussed in terms of how these novels affect children, mostly from ages ten to eighteen, as many of the characters in these texts are a similar age to them. Young adult literature (YA …

Analysis And Simulation Of Convolution Reverb Using City Tech’S New Auditorium, Tian Leng Dec 2018

Analysis And Simulation Of Convolution Reverb Using City Tech’S New Auditorium, Tian Leng

Publications and Research

In digital signal processing, convolution reverb can simulate the reverberation of a real acoustic space. The acoustics of different seating areas in an auditorium can vary from each other. To determine the reverberant characteristics of City Tech new building’s auditorium, impulse response (IR) signals are recorded in five key locations of the auditorium.

Directly recorded balloon burst is chosen as the source of impulse source. An omnidirectional and a cardioid microphone with flat frequency response curves are used to record IR signals to 24-bit monophonic wav files. Each IR signal, along with a vocal, is convoluted in MATLAB through both …

Muslim Women In The Diaspora: Shaping Lives And Negotiating Their Marriages, Enaya Othman Dec 2018

Muslim Women In The Diaspora: Shaping Lives And Negotiating Their Marriages, Enaya Othman

Arabic Languages and Literatures

This chapter uses Muslim communities in greater Milwaukee region in Wisconsin, United States as a case study to examine marriage negotiation among Palestinian women. I argue that Muslim women increasingly play a vital role in making changes to their gender roles and enhancing their marriage choices. Intermarriage outside their ethnic and national groups, increase in marriage age, and the rate of unmarried women become visible phenomena among second-generation Muslim. The decreasing number of suitable potential spouses drove Palestinian-American women to look outside their national and ethnic group for marriage partners. This made them prioritize their universal, religious identity as Muslims …

Peninsula Medical School

Proper temporal and spatial activation of stem cells relies on highly coordinated cell signaling. The primary cilium is the sensory organelle that is responsible for transmitting extracellular signals into a cell. Primary cilium size, architecture, and assembly-disassembly dynamics are under rigid cell cycle-dependent control. Using mouse incisor tooth epithelia as a model, we show that ciliary dynamics in stem cells require the proper functions of a cholesterol-binding membrane glycoprotein, Prominin-1 (Prom1/CD133), which controls sequential recruitment of ciliary membrane components, histone deacetylase, and transcription factors. Nuclear translocation of Prom1 and these molecules is particularly evident in transit amplifying cells, the immediate …

Concentric Contra-Rotating Dual Shaft Vertical Axis Wind Turbine, Emily Walz, Marcellin Zahui, Andrew Shires, Carl Gilkeson Dec 2018

Concentric Contra-Rotating Dual Shaft Vertical Axis Wind Turbine, Emily Walz, Marcellin Zahui, Andrew Shires, Carl Gilkeson

Essential Studies UNDergraduate Showcase

A typical vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) consists of two or more airfoils all attached to a single central axis. The wind turbine style most commonly found in renewable energy is the horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) that have a high energy production efficiency in exchange for requiring large amounts of land and air space. Alternatively, a VAWT can function in low speeds and in smaller less typical locations. As a result, novel VAWT designs are researched to improve their energy efficiency. An example of a novel VAWT is the concentric counter-rotating VAWT investigated theoretically using the 2D computational fluid …

Carbohydrate Extraction From The Chorella Vulgaris Microalgae Strain, William Hammann, Wayne Seames, Andrew Ross Dec 2018

Carbohydrate Extraction From The Chorella Vulgaris Microalgae Strain, William Hammann, Wayne Seames, Andrew Ross

Essential Studies UNDergraduate Showcase

The cultivation and exploitation of microalgae biomass as a source of renewable fuels and other chemicals has been an active area of research due to microalgae’s high productivity and the relatively high concentrations of valuable intracellular components, like lipids (fatty acid-based oils), proteins, and polysaccharides. Commercialization of this technology will help mitigate global climate change by reducing fossil-derived products by producing analog renewable fuels and chemicals. Traditionally, the main focus of microalgae-based fuels/chemicals research and development has been on the lipids that many strains generate, but current research shows that solely recovering the oils may not be cost competitive with …

Mechanical And Tribological Investigation Of Thin Film Coatings Onto Flexible Polymeric Substrate, Andrea Coelho Vincent Dec 2018

Mechanical And Tribological Investigation Of Thin Film Coatings Onto Flexible Polymeric Substrate, Andrea Coelho Vincent

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Elastomers of the polydimethylsiloxane family are paramount to science and engineering due to their useful properties. Much work has gone into characterizing these polymers to optimize their performance. However, at this time there is little published literature dedicated to understanding and controlling its frictional behavior. In this study, Sylgard was characterized as a function of crosslinker ratio and curing temperature, then coated with Silastic using two different techniques resulting in a bilayer. The bilayer was characterized both in bulk and surface properties, and those results compared between techniques and uncoated Sylgard. It was demonstrated that spin coating can produce a well-bonded topcoat …

Lone: An Interactive Mobile Application Introducing An Authentic Shopping Experience. Discover Joys Of The World, Experience Authentic Shopping., Xi He

Theses

LONE is an interactive mobile application, which introduces an authentic international shopping experience, helps customers to buy authentic products from a small store in another country. Based on the survey of usage of cross-border e-commerce in selected countries done by United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and Statista, today’s customers have higher demands on traveling and purchasing authentic products from overseas ever than before. Since the majority of them don’t have the time or budget of going around the world, people buying authentic items from other places become one of the sources for people to get to understand about …

Cd4+ T Cells Induce Rejection Of Urothelial Tumors After Immune Checkpoint Blockade, Yuji Sato, Jennifer K Bolzenius, Abdallah M Eteleeb, Xinming Su, Christopher A Maher, Jennifer K Sehn, Vivek K Arora

Open Access Publications

Immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) provides clinical benefit to a minority of patients with urothelial carcinoma (UC). The role of CD4+ T cells in ICB-induced antitumor activity is not well defined; however, CD4+ T cells are speculated to play a supportive role in the development of CD8+ T cells that kill tumor cells after recognition of tumor antigens presented by MHC class I. To investigate the mechanisms of ICB-induced activity against UC, we developed mouse organoid-based transplantable models that have histologic and genetic similarity to human bladder cancer. We found that ICB can induce tumor rejection and protective immunity with these …
