The "Damned" In A Flashover State: Arson And The Use Of Scientific Methods And Expert Testimony In West Virginia, Christopher W. Maidona

West Virginia Law Review Online

The fire moved quickly through the house as Cameron Todd Willingham screamed for his children from the front porch. Inside the blaze were his three children. Firefighters arrived, uncoiled hoses, and aimed water at the raging fire. However, all three Willingham children died that night from smoke inhalation.

News of the December 23, 1991, tragedy spread throughout Corsicana, Texas. Meanwhile, investigators sought to determine what caused the fire. The investigators “toured the perimeter of the house, taking notes and photographs, like archeologists mapping out a ruin.” In the kitchen, they found smoke and heat damage—signs the fire had not originated …

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

La Via Campesina (LVC) is atransnational agrarian movement that actively promotes food sovereignty as analternative approach to the global food crisis. Communication among local, national, and global members of this movement is needed to spread it furtherand support food sovereignty. This study focused examines the dynamics of local–globalcommunication in a food-sovereignty movement by comparing peasants’ statementsin the relevant communicative spaces and official texts produced by LVC. Functional connectivity is one of the most widely used tools for investigating brain changes due to schizophrenia. Previous studies have identified abnormal functional connectivity in schizophrenia patients at the resting state brain network level. This study tests the existence of functional connectivity effects at whole brain and domain levels. Domain level refers to the integration of data from several brain networks grouped by their functional relationship. Data integration provides more consistent and accurate information compared to an individual brain network. This work considers two domain level measures: functional connectivity strength and randomness. The first measure is simply an average of …

Ang Polisiya Ng Hukbong Kasundaluhan Ng Estados Unidos Ukol Sa PagkiláLa Sa Yunit Ng Mga Gerilya Sa Pilipinas: Ang Kaso Ng Lalawigan Ng Tayabas, 1942-1948, Gilbert E. Macarandang

Malay Journal

Monstrosity As A Problem Of Moral Proximity In Shakespeare’S Othello, Kyle Ward Dec 2018

Monstrosity As A Problem Of Moral Proximity In Shakespeare’S Othello, Kyle Ward

Student Works

Abstract

In Othello, Shakespeare explores the idea of monstrosity through his titular character. This paper argues that Othello exemplifies the idea that monstrosity is not an inherent evil, but rather that it is a problem of Moral Proximity. The Problem of Moral Proximity, as it is explained in the paper, is the idea that good and evil are the moderation of or corruption of neutral traits. This paper not only argues that monstrosity is one of these neutral qualities, but also explores how Iago corrupts this monstrosity to bring about Othello's downfall.

Accuracy Of Residual Urinary Volume Measurements In Patients With Neurogenic Bladder When Using A Portable Ultrasound Bladder Scanner, Yao-Hung Yang, Chung-Yao Chen Dec 2018

Accuracy Of Residual Urinary Volume Measurements In Patients With Neurogenic Bladder When Using A Portable Ultrasound Bladder Scanner, Yao-Hung Yang, Chung-Yao Chen

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Estimating the post-voiding residual urine amount is essential for managing patients with neurogenic bladder. Accurate post-voiding residual urine estimation provides guidance for the appropriate frequency of catheter drainage and reduces the rate of urinary tract infection. Although urethral catheterization is the most accurate method of estimating post-voiding residual urine, a bladder scanner-a noninvasive portable ultrasound device-constitutes an alternative method. In this study, we retrospectively reviewarticleed the residual urine amount in patients with neurogenic bladder of different etiologies using a bladder scanner and urethral catheterization. Data for 144 bladder scans and urethral catheterizations in 39 patients were analyzed, revealing that the …

The Spirituality Of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy: A Case Study, Stephen B. Morris Ph.D. Dec 2018

The Spirituality Of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy: A Case Study, Stephen B. Morris Ph.D.

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Although psychodynamic psychotherapy is effective and can be done briefly, it has fallen out of favor, especially with religiously oriented psychotherapists—including Latter-day Saint psychotherapists. The client in this case study is a 50-year-old, middle-class, Caucasian member of the Church. Using the case study as a framework, this paper describes and illustrates how psychodynamic psychotherapy can be seen as a spiritual endeavor that is compatible with both a traditional Christian orientation and a Latter-day Saint orientation. To the author’s knowledge, this is the first case report of psychodynamic psychotherapy with a Latter-day Saint client. This report may form part of the …

Patience As A Development Virtue And Common Therapeutic Factor, Vaughn E. Worthen Ph.D. Dec 2018

Patience As A Development Virtue And Common Therapeutic Factor, Vaughn E. Worthen Ph.D.

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

This article provides an overview of patience and its associated constructs by examining its role in five domains: (a) confidence and control; (b) distress tolerance; (c) relationship development, maintenance, and repair; (d) character development; and (e) spiritual maturation. It highlights initial evidence that patience contributes to increased self-regulation and impulse control, distress tolerance, self-compassion, mindfulness, empathy in relationships, perspective taking, use of cognitive reappraisals, prosocial ori- entation, character development, and spiritual maturation. Patience helps with coping with anxiety and depression, aids with handling uncertainty, facilitates relationship maintenance and repair, and sustains the ability to manage the ambiguities present during faith …

Between Identity And Truth: A Christ-Centered Perspective On Emotion, Mauro Properzi Dec 2018

Between Identity And Truth: A Christ-Centered Perspective On Emotion, Mauro Properzi

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Emotions are receiving a lot of attention in both academic and popular circles. In fact, our culture is increasingly characterized by emotionality in thought, expression, and personal interaction, with some positive but also many negative consequences. How should Christians respond to these developments in the secular culture? A Christ-centered approach to the emotions is the general theological foundation on which we need to ground our reflections and decisions about their nature and significance. Specifi- cally, by deepening our understanding of Jesus’s teachings on His identity, telos, life-giving reality, and sanctifying power, as aptly described in John 14:6, we may experience …
