Associations Between Physical Frailty And Cognitive Functioning Using Factor Analysis, Ni Sun-Suslow Jul 2018

Associations Between Physical Frailty And Cognitive Functioning Using Factor Analysis, Ni Sun-Suslow

Open Access Dissertations

While there are several proposed definitions, Fried et al. (2001) is the first study to define the physical characteristics of frailty. To date there have been few attempts to validate this criterion. Further, there is a long-standing and growing interest in the relationship between frailty and cognitive impairment. Few studies have investigated this relationship using an unmodified Fried criterion and cognitive measures beyond a mental status screener. We first examined whether the physical indicators of Fried phenotype cluster together to describe frailty syndrome using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and we further explored the association between frailty as a latent variable …

The Anticommons At Twenty: Concerns For Research Continue, Jorge L. Contreras

Center for Law and Biomedical Sciences (LABS)

Twenty years after Heller and Eisenberg predicted the emergence of an anticommons in biomedical research, this article assesses the currency of the anticommons theory. While a patent-fueled research anticommons does not appear to have emerged in the ways that Heller and Eisenberg envisioned, there are new ways in which the fragmentation of rights -- whether through trade secrecy, narrow licensing or data propertization -- continues to threaten research and commercial development. The anticommons theory thus remains as relevant today as it was when it was first proposed.

Histone Deacetylase 8 Protects Human Proximal Tubular Epithelial Cells From Hypoxia-Mimetic Cobalt- And Hypoxia/Reoxygenation-Induced Mitochondrial Fission And Cytotoxicity, Soon-Duck Ha, Ori Solomon, Masoud Akbari, Alp Sener, Sung Ouk Kim Jul 2018

Histone Deacetylase 8 Protects Human Proximal Tubular Epithelial Cells From Hypoxia-Mimetic Cobalt- And Hypoxia/Reoxygenation-Induced Mitochondrial Fission And Cytotoxicity, Soon-Duck Ha, Ori Solomon, Masoud Akbari, Alp Sener, Sung Ouk Kim

Anatomy and Cell Biology Publications

Cell death by hypoxia followed by reoxygenation (H/R) is responsible for tissue injury in multiple pathological conditions. Recent studies found that epigenetic reprogramming mediated by histone deacetylases (HDACs) is implicated in H/R-induced cell death. However, among 18 different isoforms comprising 4 classes (I-IV), the role of each HDAC in cell death is largely unknown. This study examined the role of HDAC8, which is the most distinct isoform of class I, in the hypoxia mimetic cobalt- and H/R-induced cytotoxicity of human proximal tubular HK-2 cells. Using the HDAC8-specific activator TM-2-51 (TM) and inhibitor PCI34051, we found that HDAC8 played a protective …

Fibroblasts As A Practical Alternative To Mesenchymal Stem Cells., Thomas E Ichim, Pete O'Heeron, Santosh Kesari

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy offers great potential for treatment of disease through the multifunctional and responsive ability of these cells. In numerous contexts, MSC have been shown to reduce inflammation, modulate immune responses, and provide trophic factor support for regeneration. While the most commonly used MSC source, the bone marrow provides relatively little starting material for cellular expansion, and requires invasive extraction means, fibroblasts are easily harvested in large numbers from various biological wastes. Additionally, in vitro expansion of fibroblasts is significantly easier given the robustness of these cells in tissue culture and shorter doubling time compared to typical …

Genome-Wide Atlas Of Alternative Polyadenylation In The Forage Legume Red Clover, Manohar Chakrabarti, Randy D. Dinkins, Arthur G. Hunt

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications

Studies on prevalence and significance of alternative polyadenylation (APA) in plants have been so far limited mostly to the model plants. Here, a genome-wide analysis of APA was carried out in different tissue types in the non-model forage legume red clover (Trifolium pratense L). A profile of poly(A) sites in different tissue types was generated using so-called ‘poly(A)-tag sequencing’ (PATseq) approach. Our analysis revealed tissue-wise dynamics of usage of poly(A) sites located at different genomic locations. We also identified poly(A) sites and underlying genes displaying APA in different tissues. Functional categories enriched in groups of genes manifesting APA between …

Faculty Journal Articles

Bees are important plant pollinators in both natural and agricultural ecosystems. Managed and wild bees have experienced high average annual colony losses, population declines, and local extinctions in many geographic regions. Multiple factors, including virus infections, impact bee health and longevity. The majority of bee-infecting viruses are positive-sense single-stranded RNA viruses. Bee-infecting viruses often cause asymptomatic infections but may also cause paralysis, deformity or death. The severity of infection is governed by bee host immune responses and influenced by additional biotic and abiotic factors. Herein, we highlight studies that have contributed to the current understanding of antiviral defense in bees, …

Nontuberculous mycobacterial lung disease (NTM), including Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), is a growing health problem in North America and worldwide. Little is known about the molecular alterations occurring in the tissue microenvironment during NTM pathogenesis. Utilizing next generation sequencing, we sequenced sputum and matched lymphocyte DNA in 15 MAC patients for a panel of 19 genes known to harbor cancer susceptibility associated mutations. Thirteen of 15 NTM subjects had a diagnosis of breast cancer (BCa) before or after NTM infection. Thirty three percent (4/12) of these NTM-BCa cases exhibited at least 3 somatic mutations in sputa compared to matched lymphocytes. …

Dynamic evolutionary processes and complex structure make the Y chromosome among the most diverse and least understood regions in mammalian genomes. Here, we present an annotated assembly of the male specific region of the horse Y chromosome (eMSY), representing the first comprehensive Y assembly in odd-toed ungulates. The eMSY comprises single-copy, equine specific multi-copy, PAR transposed, and novel ampliconic sequence classes. The eMSY gene density approaches that of autosomes with the highest number of retained X–Y gametologs recorded in eutherians, in addition to novel Y-born and transposed genes. Horse, donkey and mule testis RNAseq reveals several candidate genes for stallion …

The Monetary Value Of Market Replaceable Household Production: An Empirical Study Of The Economic Significance Of Housewives’ Roles, Tri Mulyaningsih, Yunastiti Purwaningsih, Kurnia Anggun

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

Abstract: Economic theory in the household production literature suggests that the division of labor within households is based on the comparative advantage of specific investments and intrinsic biological differences between males and females. Males are typically regarded as breadwinners, whereas females are believed to be responsible for raising children and performing domestic work. Moreover, domestic tasks performed by housewives are not accorded enough economic significance; these tasks are also not included in the calculation of Gross Domestic Product and Gross NationalProduct. This study aims to estimate the monetary value of the domestic tasks performed by housewives in urban Surakarta, Central …

A Training-Model Scale’S Validity And Reliability Coefficients: Expert Evaluation In Indonesian Professional Psychology Programs, Anrilia E. M. Ningdyah, Kenneth Mark Greenwood, Garry Kidd

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

Very little information has been available on training models in professional psychology programs in Indonesia, despite the IndonesianNational Accreditation Body recommending that scientist-practitioner models be applied in the education of psychologists. By contrast, research abounds on such training models in Western countries. This discrepancy raises the importance of developing a measurement tool appropriate for assessing training models in Indonesian professional psychology programs. This article describes the process of testing the validity and reliability of such a training model measuring tool in the Indonesian context. The authors used the expert evaluation method and the Aiken formula to calculate a coefficient of …

Introduction: Management of pediatric pain from medical procedures is of great importance for improving both patient care and experience. In this study, we investigated methods of managing acute pain in infants and children by studying the correlation between the number of attempts to complete painful procedures, given different comfort measures.

Methods: The study is a retrospective review of 74,276 procedures performed at two pediatric hospitals in an integrated academic children's health system between 2013 and 2016. We compared three comfort measures most frequently offered: positions of comfort (POC), distraction (DIST), and pharmacological (PHARM). These methods were compared in the setting …

Clarifying The Social Roots Of The Disproportionate Classification Of Racial Minorities And Males With Learning Disabilities, Dara Shifrer Jul 2018

Clarifying The Social Roots Of The Disproportionate Classification Of Racial Minorities And Males With Learning Disabilities, Dara Shifrer

Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The disproportionate placement of racial minorities and males into special education for learning disabilities (LDs) raises concerns that classifications occur inaccurately or inequitably. This study uses data from the Education Longitudinal Survey of 2002 to investigate the social etiology of LD classifications that persist into adolescence. Findings suggest the overclassification of racial minorities is largely consistent with (clinically relevant) differences in educational performance. Classifications may occur inconsistently or subjectively, with clinically irrelevant qualities like school characteristics and linguistic-immigration history independently predictive of disability classification. Finally, classifications may be partially biased, with male overclassification largely unexplained by this study’s measures and …

Genomic Variation Of Introduced Salvinia Minima In Southeastern United States, Carol A. Rowe, Donald P. Hauber, Paul G. Wolf

Ecology Center Publications

Common salvinia, Salvinia minima Baker (Salviniaceae), is a small, floating aquatic fern native to Central and South America that has invaded fresh water bodies in southeastern United States since the 1930s. We examined genetic variation across much of the introduced range of this species in the United States using codominant RAD-seq markers. Data from over 600 variable loci showed a reduction in heterozygosity from east to west in addition to a corresponding trend in assignment of samples to one of two genetic groups. Our data are consistent with previous published work and with the hypothesis that common salvinia had a …

Internalising Internationalisation: Views Of Internationalisation Of The Curriculum Among Non-Mobile Home Students, T Heffernan, D Morrison, P Magne, S Payne, Dre Cotton

More Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Research

There is considerable literature on internationalising the curriculum in higher education, but relatively little of this focuses on developing international perspectives in home-based students. In particular, there has been limited direct engagement with student views and understandings, especially comparatively across a wide range of subjects. To address this gap, we surveyed 495 first-year students in nine subjects across four faculties at a UK university, asking about their views on internationalisation. We also examined an apparent bias in the literature towards Business subject case studies. We found some support for generic approaches to teaching internationalisation for home students, but a more …

Comparative genomics has revolutionized virtually all fields of biology including the study of evolution. In this dissertation, I used next-generation sequencing to explore the evolutionary histories and adaptive evolution of a diverse set of taxa. Comparisons ranged across time scales, from population-level genetic diversity studies to questions spanning the deepest branches of the metazoan lineage. Whole genome sequencing of 50 unrelated Korean individuals revealed that Koreans have a distinct genetic history from the Chinese and Japanese populations. Our Korean-specific variome database was used to identify novel disease-causing variants in the Korean population, highlighting the value of high-quality ethnic variation databases …

Investigations On The Role Of The Immune System In Mammary Development And Maternal Immunity In The Marsupial, Monodelphis Domestica, Bethaney D. Fehrenkamp Jul 2018

Investigations On The Role Of The Immune System In Mammary Development And Maternal Immunity In The Marsupial, Monodelphis Domestica, Bethaney D. Fehrenkamp

Biology ETDs

All newborn mammals are highly dependent upon milk for nourishment and immune protection. This is especially true for marsupials, a lineage of mammals with a short gestation, limited placental development, and an increased reliance on an extended lactation period. Most newborn marsupials do not receive passive maternal immunity in utero and therefore are entirely dependent upon factors within the milk for immune protection until capable of mounting their own response. In this project we seek to characterize the complex lactation program utilized by marsupials, and seek greater understanding of the maternal role in the establishment of the developing immune system …

Restoring Degraded Grasslands, Llewellyn Manske Jul 2018

Restoring Degraded Grasslands, Llewellyn Manske

All Faculty Scholarship

Grasslands are complex ecosystems comprising numerous biotic and abiotic components. The biotic components are the herbaceous grass and forb plants, soil organisms and grazing graminivores which have biological and physiological requirements. The abiotic components include radiant energy from sunlight; the essential major elements of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen, and the minor essential elements of macro- and microminerals required by living organisms. The major elements and some of the minor elements have biogeochemical cycles which transform the elements between organic and inorganic forms. Grassland ecosystems are therefore functioning units of co-acting biotic organisms interacting with the abiotic components and environmental …

Sh3bp2 Gain-Of-Function Mutation Exacerbates Apical Periodontitis In Cherubism Mice, Homan Javaheri Jul 2018

Sh3bp2 Gain-Of-Function Mutation Exacerbates Apical Periodontitis In Cherubism Mice, Homan Javaheri

Master's Theses

Cherubism (CBM) is characterized by multiple fibro-osseous lesions in jawbones and caused by mutations in the SH3-domain binding protein 2 (SH3BP2). CBM patients also suffer from dental abnormalities. Biochemical analyses showed that mutations in CBM lead to SH3BP2 gain-of-function because mutant SH3BP2 is protected from tankyrase-mediated proteasomal degradation. A knock-in (KI) mouse model expressing a CBM substitution mutation (P416R) in Sh3bp2 has been generated. Homozygous mice (Sh3bp2KI/KI) show increased systemic inflammation and osteopenia phenotype with high serum TNF-α level, increased numbers of macrophages and enhanced osteoclastogenesis. Heterozygous mice (Sh3bp2+/KI) exhibit intermediate phenotype …

The rapid shrinkage of Lake Urmia, one of the world's largest saline lakes located in northwestern Iran, is a tragic wake-up call to revisit the principles of water resources management based on the socio-economic and environmental dimensions of sustainable development. The overarching goal of this paper is to set a framework for deriving dynamic, climate-informed environmental inflows for drying lakes considering both meteorological/climatic and anthropogenic conditions. We report on the compounding effects of meteorological drought and unsustainable water resource management that contributed to Lake Urmia's contemporary environmental catastrophe. Using rich datasets of hydrologic attributes, water demands and withdrawals, as well …
