Novel Methods For Improving Resolution In Liquid And Solid State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, Lauren Fae Odonnell Dec 2018

Novel Methods For Improving Resolution In Liquid And Solid State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, Lauren Fae Odonnell

Open Access Dissertations

NMR spectroscopy is a versatile analytical platform with a well developed theoretical foundation that makes it a popular vehicle for biological, chemical, material, and medical research. Successfully deciphering an NMR spectrum in order to extract important structural and chemical information typically requires the separation of overlapping signals that can be limited by the available spectral resolution, which is itself influenced by numerous factors such as molecular motions, spin-spin couplings, and field inhomogeneities. In this dissertation, methods for improving spectral resolution in both liquid and solids are explored. To begin, a brief introduction to NMR theory is provided which includes an …

Multifunctional Donepezil Analogues As Cholinesterase And Bace1 Inhibitors, Keith D. Green, Marina Y. Fosso, Sylvie Garneau-Tsodikova

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

A series of 22 donepezil analogues were synthesized through alkylation/benzylation and compared to donepezil and its 6-O-desmethyl adduct. All the compounds were found to be potent inhibitors of both acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), two enzymes responsible for the hydrolysis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in Alzheimer’s disease patient brains. Many of them displayed lower inhibitory concentrations of EeAChE (IC50 = 0.016 ± 0.001 µM to 0.23 ± 0.03 µM) and EfBChE (IC50 = 0.11 ± 0.01 µM to 1.3 ± 0.2 µM) than donepezil. One of the better compounds was tested against HsAChE and was …

With social media being a prominent platform in the days of sharing information over the internet, it can affect one’s self-esteem if not careful. The current study examines the relationship of social media usage and self-esteem. From the 218 participants surveyed, results show that social media does have some influence on a person’s self-esteem. A person with a high self-esteem is more likely to use social media for finding entertaining content, promote products/services, and talk about their accomplishments, while a person with a low self-esteem will use it to not feel alone, but they do not post selfies. There was …

A Speech Recognition Noise Analysis Using A Biological Neural Network, Logan Matthew Walters Dec 2018

A Speech Recognition Noise Analysis Using A Biological Neural Network, Logan Matthew Walters

Student Theses and Dissertations

Typically, modern Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) engines are developed using artificial neural networks (ANN) that utilize probabilistic and stochastic models for analyzing data and computing outputs. As such, limitations are seen with this structure of implementation due to the volume of data required for accuracy and scalability. Resultantly, different software solutions are being considered to improve the accuracy of ASR engines in these unique cases where commonly used models fall short. The presented research illustrates the potential of a biological neural network (BNN) if implemented as an ASR engine. Theoretical comparisons are made between the efficiency of a BNN and …

International Commission On Trichinellosis: Recommendations For Genotyping Trichinella Muscle Stage Larvae, Edoardo Pozio, Dante Zarlenga Dec 2018

International Commission On Trichinellosis: Recommendations For Genotyping Trichinella Muscle Stage Larvae, Edoardo Pozio, Dante Zarlenga

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Being able to identify the species or genotype of Trichinella is of paramount importance not only for epidemiological studies but to better ascertain the source of outbreaks that still occur worldwide. This has become more critical in recent years given the increase in imported meat products and the relationship that wild animals play in the domestic and sylvatic transmission cycles. In contrast to a time when the genus Trichinella was considered monospecific, research in recent years has revealed that the genus consists of 9 species and at least 3 additional genotypes which have yet to be named. Except for a …

Making The Invisible Visible: Affordances And Hindrances Of Using Tangible Objects In Identity Research, Amber Simpson Dec 2018

Making The Invisible Visible: Affordances And Hindrances Of Using Tangible Objects In Identity Research, Amber Simpson

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this manuscript is to highlight the role of tangible objects (i.e., rings) in understanding individual’s STEM identity, which in this study is defined as an interdisciplinary belief that an individual has about her or himself regarding science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The rings allowed participants to position themselves within STEM disciplines and to further illustrate and narrate this position through the various ring sizes, and for some, the spatial arrangement of the rings. However, the use of the rings seemed to limit participants to describing who they are within STEM in the moment, as well as not …

Neuroimaging Of Cognitive Flexibility: Task Validity And Clinical Applications, Dina R. Dajani Dec 2018

Neuroimaging Of Cognitive Flexibility: Task Validity And Clinical Applications, Dina R. Dajani

Open Access Dissertations

A key challenge for cognitive neuroscience is the development and validation of tasks that capture real-world cognitive phenomena and render them suitable for investigation within an MRI environment. Cognitive flexibility is necessary for a range of adaptive behaviors and is associated with optimal life outcomes, but as a psychological construct it has been difficult to operationalize and validate. Crucially, psychometrically validated tasks must be developed prior to their application to clinical populations to investigate the neural substrates of cognitive inflexibility. Here, we address these limitations by adapting a well-validated laboratory measure of cognitive flexibility to the scanner environment (Study I) …

Controlling Photo Processes Within A Confined Space: Switches, Triggers, And Electron Transfer, Mohan Raj Anthony Raj Dec 2018

Controlling Photo Processes Within A Confined Space: Switches, Triggers, And Electron Transfer, Mohan Raj Anthony Raj

Open Access Dissertations

Many important biological processes, such as photosynthesis and vision are fueled by light. Selective photoisomerization of cis-retinal linked to rhodopsin protein causes vision. Biochemical structures like, pockets of enzymes, interiors of chaperones and inner-space of proteins are few examples of confined space in nature. Light seems to be an ideal external control element for many chemical and biological manipulations. In this work, we used water-soluble deep cavitand “octa acid” (OA) as a nanocarriers to carry out various photo processes like, photoswitches, phototriggers and electron transfer. We used NMR techniques to understand the encapsulation and photoreaction of guest molecules with OA …

Clinical and Translational Science Institute

Background: Brain tumor vasculature can be significantly compromised and leakier than that of normal brain blood vessels. Little is known if there are vascular permeability alterations in the brain adjacent to tumor (BAT). Changes in BAT permeability may also lead to increased drug permeation in the BAT, which may exert toxicity on cells of the central nervous system. Herein, we studied permeation changes in BAT using quantitative fluorescent microscopy and autoradiography, while the effect of chemotherapy within the BAT region was determined by staining for activated astrocytes. Methods: Human metastatic breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231Br) were injected into left ventricle of …

Creating Change In Intercollegiate Athletics: The Sexual Assault Prevention Paradigm For Athletic Departments, Kristy Mccray, Sue Sutherland, Donna L. Pastore

Health and Sport Sciences Faculty Scholarship

In 2011, the Office for Civil Rights issued a “Dear Colleague Letter” instructing universities to take action regarding sexual assault on college campuses. Specifically, universities must better educate students on the prevention of sexual assault, in the hope of reducing violence against women. Previous research is inconclusive on the involvement of intercollegiate student-athletes in incidences of sexual assault; however, recent high-profile cases of sexual misconduct at universities indicate that student-athletes are not immune to this issue. The purpose of this study was to explore how sexual assault is viewed within the culture of intercollegiate athletics, including education, occurrence, and prevention. …

The Impact Of Music On Language Acquisition, Courtney A. Rieb Dec 2018

The Impact Of Music On Language Acquisition, Courtney A. Rieb

Honors Capstones

More and more students in the classroom are English learners (ELs) (U.S. Department of Education, 2017). Despite the historically strong evidence that music is beneficial to the language acquisition process for ELs, there is very little music education occurring (Engh, 2013; Salcedo, 2010). The more teachers know about the benefits of implementing music in the classroom, it is hopeful that they will be more likely to include music in their curricula. The purpose of this literature review is to explore the positive impact of music on language acquisition and communicate the role that music can play in lowering the affective …

Species Richness, Diversity, And Abundance Of Sponge Communities In Broward County, Florida, 2000-2015, Jessica Price

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Sponges (Porifera) are a major component of coral reef ecosystems. They outnumber coral species on the Florida Reef Tract, and in places, account for more living cover. Because coral reefs are a vital part of Florida’s economy, it is important to understand how local sponge assemblages vary spatially and temporally, especially as corals continue to decline. However, long-term observations of sponge assemblages (species richness, diversity and abundance) are lacking. To address this, annual photoquadrats were analyzed from a series of 25 sites off Broward County between 2000 and 2015. Variations in sponge assemblages were then compared to several natural and …

Peruvian Pinnipeds As Archivists Of Enso Effects, Mickie Rae Edwards Dec 2018

Peruvian Pinnipeds As Archivists Of Enso Effects, Mickie Rae Edwards

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Environmental fluctuations in the eastern Pacific Ocean are reflected in the tissues of some of its most vulnerable apex predators, the Peruvian fur seal (PFS) Arctocephalus australis ssp.and the South American sea lion (SASL) Otaria byronia. These large pinnipeds live in sympatry along the Pacific coastline of South America and forage within the neritic waters over the continental shelf. The coastal waters off Peru are a region of great environmental fluctuations due to periodic, oscillating El Niño- La Niña- Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events, which result in ecosystem-wide food web changes. Pinniped vibrissae (whiskers) are continuously growing keratinous tissues and …

Antibiotic resistance is one of the greatest public health challenges of our time. There is an urgent need to discover new antibiotics to combat these drug resistant infections. The MEP pathway is essential to most bacteria and not found in humans which makes it a desirable target for novel antibiotic discovery. The IspF enzyme is the fifth enzyme in the MEP pathway. Screening of a library of approximately 3000 compounds by the Hagen group identified several sulfa drugs that were ligands for the IspF enzyme. The purpose of this research was to synthesize sulfonamide derivative compounds for IspF inhibition. In …

The 2017 Dagstuhl Seminar on Computational Proteomics provided an opportunity for a broad discussion on the current state and future directions of the generation and use of peptide tandem mass spectrometry spectral libraries. Their use in proteomics is growing slowly, but there are multiple challenges in the field that must be addressed to further increase the adoption of spectral libraries and related techniques. The primary bottlenecks are the paucity of high quality and comprehensive libraries and the general difficulty of adopting spectral library searching into existing workflows. There are several existing spectral library formats, but none captures a satisfactory level …
