Role Of Silicon In Improving Drought Tolerance In Soybean, Meng Li
Role Of Silicon In Improving Drought Tolerance In Soybean, Meng Li
Theses and Dissertations
Drought is a major environmental factor limiting crop productivity. Considering a significant area of crop production under water-limited rained conditions, there is a great need to develop production systems to sustain yield potentials under drought stress. Silicon has recently been recognized as an important element in plant nutrition. In this study, it was shown that supplying soybean with soluble silicon in the soil could improve vegetative growth and drought tolerance under water limiting conditions. In order to understand the molecular mechanism how silicon alleviates drought stress, the effects of silicon application on protein expression and antioxidant enzymes were examined. Soybean …
Novel Formaldimine Precursor For Use In A Hosomi-Sakurai Reaction For The Formation Of Phenyl-Substituted Homoallylamines And A New Modular Approach For The Synthesis Of Half-Sandwich Ruthenium Complexes, Jonathan Baine
Theses and Dissertations
Organometallic allylation for the formation of C-C bonds has been a widely developed area over the past several decades for the formation of homoallylic alcohols and amines. One such pathway, the eponymous Hosomi-Sakurai reaction involves the Lewis acid-catalyzed addition of an allylic silane to an acetal, carbonyl, or imine. This work demonstrates an example of a Hosomi-Sakurai reaction using 1,2-ditosyl diazetidine as a slow release formaldimine precursor with good yield and high selectivity. Another less classical field, C-H activation, has also been around for several decades, but has recently exploded in new innovations. Through C-H activation chemists are able to …
Petrographic And Chemical Analysis Of Grinding Stones Collected By The Shkodra Archaeological Project, Zhaneta Gjyshja
Petrographic And Chemical Analysis Of Grinding Stones Collected By The Shkodra Archaeological Project, Zhaneta Gjyshja
Theses and Dissertations
The Shkodra Archaeological Project (PASH) took place in northern Albania, particularly in the Shkodra region. PASH focused on analyzing human settlements and social behaviors, from prehistory to modern times. This thesis focuses on the study of grinding stones collected by this project during excavation and survey. This study incorporates macroscopic, petrographic and chemical analyses to source these grinding stones and compares them with sourced samples collected in South Albania to answer questions about raw material selection and social interactions. It was found that, based on their chemical and petrographic properties, grinding stones collected by PASH are different from those collected …
Early Impacts Of Midstory Hardwoods And Overstory Density On Longleaf Seedling Establishment On Xeric Sites, Jacob Colin Henry
Early Impacts Of Midstory Hardwoods And Overstory Density On Longleaf Seedling Establishment On Xeric Sites, Jacob Colin Henry
Theses and Dissertations
Competition from hardwood species has long been considered a constraint on longleaf pine (Pinus palustris). However, evidence suggests that hardwood midstories may improve longleaf regeneration on xeric sites. Additionally, overstory retention for red-cockaded woodpecker (Leuconotopicus borealis; RCW) habitat may be inadvertently contributing to regeneration failures. Experimental plots in the North Carolina Sandhills were planted with containerized longleaf seedlings across a gradient of overstory density, and hardwoods were chemically controlled by treating at planting, treating after one year, or left untreated. Seedling survival (percent), growth (mass), and brown spot needle blight (percent infected seedlings; BSNB) were measured after two years. Seedling …
Multi-Scale Spatial Selection Of A Large Solitary Omnivore, American Black Bear, Mariela Gisele Gantchoff
Multi-Scale Spatial Selection Of A Large Solitary Omnivore, American Black Bear, Mariela Gisele Gantchoff
Theses and Dissertations
Movement of organisms is a fundamental component of many ecological processes, and should be subject to strong selective pressures. Spatial selection is the process by which individuals choose the locations to acquire necessary resources or avoid risk, and the relative importance of different factors on spatial selection may change depending on the scale being analyzed. Under the framework of optimality, an individual should attempt to structure their spatial selection economically to maximize fitness. I studied black bear (Ursus americanus) space use, habitat selection, and movement under the optimality paradigm in three populations (Michigan, Missouri, and Mississippi) at four different scales: …
Classification Of Recently Discovered Amoeboid Protists, Gabriel Schuler
Classification Of Recently Discovered Amoeboid Protists, Gabriel Schuler
Theses and Dissertations
Many groups of protists, also known as microbial eukaryotes, remain understudied. One such group, the superfamily Sainouroidea in the supergroup Rhizaria has been shown to be a molecularly diverse and divergent clade by recent environmental sequencing. Here we isolated and analyzed cultures of Sainouroid amoebae using 18S rDNA sequencing, light microscopy, and TEM. Using a molecular species concept we described four novel genera and twelve novel species in Sainouroidea. Another understudied group Cutosea, in the supergroup Amoebozoa, contains the ATCC isolate PRA-29, which is an amoeba that has been used in many phylogenomic datasets. PRA-29 was incorrectly identified as Pessonella …
Ecology Of Rare And Abundant Raptors On An Oceanic Island The Sharp-Shinned Hawk And Red-Tailed Hawk In Puerto Rico, Julio C. Gallardo
Ecology Of Rare And Abundant Raptors On An Oceanic Island The Sharp-Shinned Hawk And Red-Tailed Hawk In Puerto Rico, Julio C. Gallardo
Theses and Dissertations
Reliable estimates of species abundance, distribution, and population trajectories are critical in conservation and management. However, for many tropical species that information is missing. We conducted Sharp-shinned Hawk (SSHA) searches during the breeding seasons of 2013, 2014, and 2016 in eight montane forest reserves and their adjacent private lands of Puerto Rico. Further, we developed a maximum entropy model (MaxEnt) of the SSHA’s potential distribution using the following environmental variables: aspect, canopy closure, elevation, rainfall, slope, and terrain roughness. Elevation accounted for 89.8% of model fit, predicting the greatest probability of occurrence (> 60%) at elevations above 900 m. The …
Ecosystem Impacts And Space Use Of Double-Crested Cormorants In A Southeastern Reservoir System, Leah Lk Moran
Ecosystem Impacts And Space Use Of Double-Crested Cormorants In A Southeastern Reservoir System, Leah Lk Moran
Theses and Dissertations
Double-crested Cormorants are expanding their breeding range to historic wintering and migratory regions, such as Guntersville Reservoir in Alabama. This study lends insight into how cormorants breeding in a temperate ecosystem impact plants, trees, soil and bird communities as well as home range and movement of cormorants during the breeding season and whether they reside on this reservoir year-round. Results suggest that breeding cormorants have a negative impact on this ecosystem and do not move far from colony sites. Stable isotopes from cormorants and prey fish suggest that cormorants are migrating from this system after breeding, potentially to a marine …

Energetics Of Metal And Substrates Binding To The 2-His-1-Carboxylate Binding Motif In Nonheme Iron(Ii) Enzymes, Mingjie Li
Theses and Dissertations
Nonheme iron(II) oxygenases within a common 2-His-1-carboxylate binding motif catalyze a wide range of oxidation reactions involved in biological functions like DNA repair and secondary metabolic processes. The mechanism of O2 activation catalyzed by this enzyme family has been examined by spectroscopic, crystallographic, and computational studies, where it is clear the iron(II) center works with substrate, and cosubstrate to activate O2 by forming a highly oxidizing iron species (iron(IV)-oxo). From a thermodynamic perspective, substrate and/or co-substrate binding organizes the active site for O2 activation, and understanding the interactions among metal, substrate, cosubstrate, and enzyme provides insight into the intramolecular contacts …
Environmental Effects And Public Opinion Issues Associated With Incorporating Recycled Glass Cullet Into Beach Ecosystems Through Nourishment Projects, Claire Elizabeth Babineaux
Environmental Effects And Public Opinion Issues Associated With Incorporating Recycled Glass Cullet Into Beach Ecosystems Through Nourishment Projects, Claire Elizabeth Babineaux
Theses and Dissertations
Nourishing beaches and coastlines is a common practice in mitigating the effects of coastal erosion. Cullet, a geologically compatible aggregate, has been suggested for use in beach nourishment practices instead of dredged sands. The goal of this research is to assess the suitability of using of cullet to replace dredged sand as a nourishment aggregate and to educate the public about the potential uses for cullet as it relates to coastal erosion. The compatibility of cullet to natural quartz sand relies heavily on the comparison of physical characteristics of the grains and ecological compatibility, which compares the microorganisms that naturally …
Evaluating Population Dynamics, Movement, And Spawning Success Of Paddlefish Polyodon Spathula At Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge, Chelsea Rae Gilliland
Evaluating Population Dynamics, Movement, And Spawning Success Of Paddlefish Polyodon Spathula At Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge, Chelsea Rae Gilliland
Theses and Dissertations
An abundant Paddlefish Polyodon spathula population exists in a 0.8 ha pool below a water control structure at Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge, Mississippi. Managers were concerned that regulated flows from the structure were causing an ecological trap if Paddlefish were being attracted from the larger river downstream during the spawning period, but conditions were not suitable to facilitate reproduction. Between February 2016 to April 2018, 117 Paddlefish were identified and daily abundance was estimated between 18 and 75 fish. Telemetry study of 59 fish suggests a mixed population structure where some remain in the pool year-round and …
Using Photovoice To Derive The Shared Experiences Of Adolescents At A Camp For Autism Spectrum Disorder, Matthew Collier
Using Photovoice To Derive The Shared Experiences Of Adolescents At A Camp For Autism Spectrum Disorder, Matthew Collier
Theses and Dissertations
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a disability characterized by social communication deficits, repetitive and restrictive behaviors, and language and communication deficits. Its prevalence among the general population has led to increased efforts to intervene effectively during childhood and adolescence. Prior quantitative and qualitative research suggests that camps are an effective setting to deliver social skills intervention for children with ASD; however, there are gaps in research that need to be addressed, such as a lack of empirical qualitative evidence, difficulty with language and communication issues inherent to ASD, and limited reliable studies involving the photovoice methodologies. The research questions designed …
Temperature Effect On Maize Germination And Root Elongation, Omar Nazhan Ali
Temperature Effect On Maize Germination And Root Elongation, Omar Nazhan Ali
Theses and Dissertations
Early planting is one technique to avoid or reduce heat and drought problems that negatively affecting grain crop production. If producers adopt early planting, cold temperatures may negatively affect corn yield. It is important to select hybrids that are suited for planting earlier in the southern United States. Experiments were conducted by imposing low temperatures during seed germination. Twenty commercially available corn hybrids were evaluated for seed germination and root elongation. The first objective was: 1) To determine if some hybrids germinate better at cooler temperatures than others; and 2) Determine variation in root elongation at cold temperatures among commercially …
The "Split Gaze" Of Refraction: Racial Passing In The Works Of Helen Oyeyemi And Zoë Wicomb, Allison Wiltshire
The "Split Gaze" Of Refraction: Racial Passing In The Works Of Helen Oyeyemi And Zoë Wicomb, Allison Wiltshire
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I expand considerations of diaspora as not only a migration of people and cultures but a migration of thought. Specifically, I demonstrate that literary representations of diaspora produce what I consider to be an epistemological migration, challenging the idea that race and culture are stable and impermeable and offering instead racial and cultural fluidity. I assert that this causal relationship is best exemplified by narratives of racial passing written by diasporic writers. Using Homi Bhabha’s concepts of mimicry, hybridity, and ambivalence, I analyze Helen Oyeyemi’s Boy, Snow, Bird and Zoë Wicomb’s Playing in the Light, arguing that …
In Situ Induction Heating Of Electrodes And Applications, Mohammad Azizur Rahman
In Situ Induction Heating Of Electrodes And Applications, Mohammad Azizur Rahman
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis describes the fabrication of an induction heating apparatus and its use to directly heat small platinum and gold electrodes in electrolyte solution. The heating characteristics of the electrodes were studied via the entropic shift of redox potential with temperature and change in Faradaic current. Temperature pulse voltammetry (TPV) and cyclic voltammetry were used for temperature calibration under various heating conditions. The maximum temperature reached at a 0.25 mm diam platinum electrode surface in solution was 84 degrees C. At heated electrodes an increase in current was found to be due to convection and diffusion. TPV was performed with …
Investigating The Influence Of Herd Behavior On Protection Motivation: A Multi-Stage Experiment, Ali Vedadi
Investigating The Influence Of Herd Behavior On Protection Motivation: A Multi-Stage Experiment, Ali Vedadi
Theses and Dissertations
IT users often make security-related decisions in complex and multidimensional environments. Over-reliance on current behavioral security theories (e.g. Protection Motivation Theory) that do not account for such circumstances can seriously limit researchers’ ability to comprehend such decision making. In this regard, herd behavior theory explains that when individuals make decisions in uncertain circumstances, they may observe what other people are doing, discount their own limited information and imitate others (also known as social learning). Explaining protection motivation behavior from a different theoretical perspective (i.e. herd behavior) is one of the primary contributions of this study. Investigating whether protection motivation behaviors …

Investigation Of Antimicrobial Peptide Genes In Maize (Zea Mays) Inbred Lines Resistant To Lepidoptera Larvae Feeding And Fungus Infection, Joseph Ali Noonan
Theses and Dissertations
Present throughout all classes of life, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) confer defense against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and insects. Identifying maize AMPs would provide breeders with a new defense resource. Here, the investigation of maize AMPs is reported. The distribution of AMPs within a panel of ten Mississippi maize inbred lines with varying resistance to Lepidoptera larvae feeding and Aspergillus infection is explored to characterize their observed resistances. Homology data-mining with two comprehensive AMP databases revealed 88 unique maize AMP protein sequences across 81 genes in the MaizeGDB B73 genome assembly. AMP-related polymorphic sites were identified using genomic primers. Analyses with qRT-PCR …

Mapping Potential Butterfly Weed (Asclepias Tuberosa) Habitat In Mississippi Using Geographical Information Systems (Gis), Emma Rose Neigel
Theses and Dissertations
Butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa) is a primary larval food source for the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus). Planting more butterfly weed may stimulate declining monarch populations. To that end, a habitat suitability map was created for Mississippi in GIS using soil pH, soil texture, and land cover. Herbarium data were derived from the Southeast Regional Network of Expertise and Collections (SERNEC) database. Environmental data were from the USDA National Resource Conservation Service geospatial data gateway. Frequency analysis was used to assign scores to environmental variables of SERNEC occurrences using a suitability index. Global positioning systems (GPS) locations of butterfly weed were …
Fusion For Object Detection, Pan Wei
Fusion For Object Detection, Pan Wei
Theses and Dissertations
In a three-dimensional world, for perception of the objects around us, we not only wish to classify them, but also know where these objects are. The task of object detection combines both classification and localization. In addition to predicting the object category, we also predict where the object is from sensor data. As it is not known ahead of time how many objects that we have interest in are in the sensor data and where are they, the output size of object detection may change, which makes the object detection problem difficult. In this dissertation, I focus on the task …

An Examination Of Pedagogy In Middle School Science And Its Effect On Student Achievement, Brittany E. Kiser
An Examination Of Pedagogy In Middle School Science And Its Effect On Student Achievement, Brittany E. Kiser
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
The development of policies ensuring regular examination of American students has been one approach to the mandate of accountability within the United States. While the face of assessment in education and the subsequent policies continue to evolve, the method to which classrooms approach preparing students for these examinations does so as well, though not in concert. Although some research has attempted to connect the two, particularly in the fields of mathematics and reading, a clear link between pedagogy in science classrooms and student achievement on standardized exams has not yet been established. Using qualitative and quantitative data gathered through surveys …

Movement Patterns Of Three Coastal Shark Species Along A Subtropical Urban Gradient: Habitat Use Metrics And Influence Of Human Disturbance-Related Factors, Robert P. Roemer
Open Access Theses
The effects of urbanization and anthropogenic stressors have the ability to dramatically alter ecosystem function and habitats. Given the rates of population growth along the coast, urban centers continue to grow, which increase pressures on wildlife. Understanding the effects of urbanization and anthropogenic influences on apex carnivores is important considering the ecosystem services they provide. While published research pertaining to the movements of terrestrial urban carnivores is limited, more so are the effects of urbanization on the spatial ecology of marine predators. Understanding movement patterns of marine carnivores in response to urban-induced stressors is important when delineating zones of ecological …
