Examining The Legacy Of Transgenerational Trauma And Its Effects On Contemporary African American Adults In Parenting And Caregiver Roles To African American Adolescents, Amy E. Alexander
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The system of institutional enslavement in North America has produced myriad effects on the contemporary African American community via the transmission of individual, familial, and collective trauma across generations (Carter, 2015; DeGruy, 2005; Weingarten, 2004). This research explored the roles of parent and caregiver within this cultural group in an effort to determine how past traumas have influenced the lived experiences and world view of African Americans in these roles.
While research on certain historically marginalized cultural and religious groups is plentiful, there is a clear lacuna of scholarly investigation into the African American experience, particularly as it relates to …

Re-Queering The Trans Binary: Gender Nonconforming Individuals’ Experiences In Counseling And Therapeutic Settings, Michael Stephens
Re-Queering The Trans Binary: Gender Nonconforming Individuals’ Experiences In Counseling And Therapeutic Settings, Michael Stephens
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study sought to unearth the narratives of gender nonconforming (GNC) individuals’ experiences of mental health services. The term gender nonconforming refers to individuals who do not identify with a strictly male or female concept of gender identity. There is an insubstantial research that has been conducted into the provision of effective mental health services for gender nonconforming individuals. Most of the studies in the literature review used the term transgender to highlight gender minority experience of counseling.
This study used gender nonconforming to separate from this terminology confusion. Individuals who identify with the identity label of transgender can be …
Self-Assembling Bioaffinity Hydrogels For Localized Antibody Delivery, Wen Liu
Self-Assembling Bioaffinity Hydrogels For Localized Antibody Delivery, Wen Liu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The scope of illnesses that are being treated using monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) has been expanding from cancers to autoimmune diseases due to their high specificity to their molecular target. Because many of the new mAbs are aimed to modulate the immune system, an emerging concern is that patients with chronic illnesses are subjected to immune-related Adverse Events (irAEs). Loss of immunological tolerance to self-antigens or increased susceptibility to infections have been documented in some mAb treatments. Localized sustained release of mAb at disease sites might mitigate the risk of such toxicities. Antibody drugs are formulated typically for parenteral delivery because …
Ectopic Expression Of A Stilbenoid Prenyltransferase From Peanut In Hairy Roots Of Muscadine Grape, Mohammad Fazle Azim
Ectopic Expression Of A Stilbenoid Prenyltransferase From Peanut In Hairy Roots Of Muscadine Grape, Mohammad Fazle Azim
Student Theses and Dissertations
Stilbenoids are phenolic compounds which not only serve as phytoalexins but also exhibit biological activities important to human health, including anticancer, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties in vitro. However, some stilbenoids, such as the non prenylated stilbenoid resveratrol, have poor bioavailability limiting their application in vivo. Therefore, the goal of this project was to express a peanut stilbenoid prenyltransferase (i.e. AhR4DT-1) in muscadine grape to convert resveratrol to the prenylated stilbenoid arachidin-2, a potentially more bioavailable stilbenoid than resveratrol. Four hairy root lines of muscadine grape were developed via transformation with an engineered Agrobacterium rhizogenes harboring a peanut stilbenoid prenyltransferase. The …

Prokaryotes use primed CRISPR adaptation to update their memory bank of spacers against invading genetic elements that have escaped CRISPR interference through mutations in their protospacer target site. We previously observed a trend that nucleotide-dependent mismatches between crRNA and the protospacer strongly influence the efficiency of primed CRISPR adaptation. Here we show that guanine-substitutions in the target strand of the protospacer are highly detrimental to CRISPR interference and interference-dependent priming, while cytosine-substitutions are more readily tolerated. Furthermore, we show that this effect is based on strongly decreased binding affinity of the effector complex Cascade for guanine-mismatched targets, while cytosine-mismatched targets …

Psychological And Family Variables Associated With The Treatment Of Pediatric Idiopathic Pain, Rachael Hoffman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The present study examined variability in treatment outcomes of children with idiopathic chronic pain. Specifically, the biopsychosocial model was used as a framework to consider the way that symptoms of depression and anxiety as well as parent response to pain contributed to the change in a child’s confidence in participating in daily activities following treatment in an inpatient chronic pain treatment program.
Slippery Fish: Enforcing Regulation When Agents Learn And Adapt, Andres Gonzalez Lira, Ahmed Musfiq Mobarak
Slippery Fish: Enforcing Regulation When Agents Learn And Adapt, Andres Gonzalez Lira, Ahmed Musfiq Mobarak
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Attempts to curb undesired behavior through regulation gets complicated when agents can adapt to circumvent enforcement. We test a model of enforcement with learning and adaptation, by auditing vendors selling illegal fish in Chile in a randomized controlled trial, and tracking them daily using mystery shoppers. Conducting audits on a predictable schedule and (counter-intuitively) at high frequency is less effective, as agents learn to take advantage of loopholes. A consumer information campaign proves to be almost as cost-effective and curbing illegal sales, and obviates the need for complex monitoring and policing. The Chilean government subsequently chooses to scale up this …

Zika virus (ZIKV) causes no-to-mild symptoms or severe neurological disorders. To investigate the importance of viral and host genetic variations in determining ZIKV infection outcomes, we created three full-length infectious cDNA clones as bacterial artificial chromosomes for each of three spatiotemporally distinct and genetically divergent ZIKVs: MR-766 (Uganda, 1947), P6-740 (Malaysia, 1966), and PRVABC-59 (Puerto Rico, 2015). Using the three molecularly cloned ZIKVs, together with 13 ZIKV region-specific polyclonal antibodies covering nearly the entire viral protein-coding region, we made three conceptual advances: (i) We created a comprehensive genome-wide portrait of ZIKV gene products and their related species, with several previously …
Wellness And Karate, Cristina Kumpf
Wellness And Karate, Cristina Kumpf
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The promotion of wellness is an integral part of the counseling field and is considered to be a central focus to the counseling process (Barden, Conley, & Young, 2015; Myers, 1992). The counseling profession adopted the concept of wellness because it harmonizes with many of the founding principles of the ACA and is seen as a process of questing toward optimal health and well-being in body, mind, and spirit (Barden, Conley, & Young, 2015; Myers, 1992; Myers, Sweeney, & Witmer, 2000). Additionally, ACA Code of Ethics (2014) state that counselors “engage in self-care activities to maintain and promote their own …
Structure And Thermodynamics Of Polyglutamine Peptides And Amyloid Fibrils Via Metadynamics And Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Riley Workman
Structure And Thermodynamics Of Polyglutamine Peptides And Amyloid Fibrils Via Metadynamics And Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Riley Workman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Aggregation of polyglutamine (polyQ)-rich polypeptides in neurons is a marker for nine neurodegenerative diseases. The molecular process responsible for the formation of polyQ fibrils is not well understood and represents a growing area of study. To enable development of treatments that could interfere with aggregation of polyQ peptides, it is crucial to understand the molecular mechanisms by which polyQ peptides aggregate into fibrils. Many experimental techniques have been employed to probe polyQ aggregation, however, observations from these studies have not lead to a unified understanding of the properties of these systems, instead yielding competing, fragmented theories of polyQ aggregation. This …

Gq Noncanonical Roles In Translational Regulation, Brett Demarco
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates protein nucleic acid interactions, focusing on G-quadruplex (GQ) forming DNA/RNA in human disease. GQ structures are formed in DNA/RNA, when four guanine residues form planar tetrads stabilized by Hoogsteen base pairing, that stack forming a GQ structure stabilized by potassium ions. These GQ structures are targeted by the arginine glycine-glycine (RGG) RNA-binding domain. Fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP), a translation regulator protein implicated in the fragile X syndrome, has an RGG domain and has been previously shown to interact with neuronal GQ forming messenger RNA (mRNA). We have investigated three neuronal FMRP mRNA targets that we …

According to the traditional view, GTPases act as molecular switches, which cycle between distinct ‘on’ and ‘off’ conformations bound to GTP and GDP, respectively. Translation elongation factor EF-Tu is a GTPase essential for prokaryotic protein synthesis. In its GTP-bound form, EF-Tu delivers aminoacylated tRNAs to the ribosome as a ternary complex. GTP hydrolysis is thought to cause the release of EF-Tu from aminoacyl-tRNA and the ribosome due to a dramatic conformational change following Pi release. Here, the crystal structure of Escherichia coli EF-Tu in complex with a non-hydrolysable GTP analogue (GDPNP) has been determined. Remarkably, the overall conformation of EF-Tu·GDPNP …
Post-Treatment Effects Of Infrared Radiation On Rough Rice Germination And Lesser Grain Borers (Rhyzopertha Dominica (F.)), Rachel Marie Hampton
Post-Treatment Effects Of Infrared Radiation On Rough Rice Germination And Lesser Grain Borers (Rhyzopertha Dominica (F.)), Rachel Marie Hampton
Student Theses and Dissertations
Infrared radiation (IR) has been shown to effectively dry grain while eliminating stored-product insects. Little has been done to examine IR’s effect on rice germination or insect development. Two studies were conducted using XL745 (hybrid) and CL152 (pureline) rice cultivars dried with three IR intensities (2.15, 2.83, and 10.84 kW/m2). Control samples were dried in an environmental chamber (0 kW/m2). Rice was germinated for 14 days. An IR intensity of 10.84 kW/m2 reduced germination, shoot and primary root lengths compared to lower intensities. Lesser grain borers (LGB), Rhyzopertha dominica (F.), were placed on treated rough and brown rice for 50 …

Preparation And Characterization Of Arabinoxylan From Rice Bran Fiber, Divya Kandanool
Student Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this investigation was to isolate arabinoxylan (AX) from rice bran fiber and characterize its structural properties with enzyme and chromatographic techniques. The hypothesis was that glycoside hydrolase family 11 endo-xylanase (GH11-XYN) action on rice bran AX would generate oligosaccharide profiles that are distinguishable from other cereal species. The Specific Objectives addressed were to: 1) Extract AX fractions from rice bran fiber and determine yield and compositions. 2) Treat rice bran AX fractions with defined XYNs, and then characterize the enzyme-product profiles. Results showed that GH11-XYN generated large fragments from rice AX (average degree of polymerization 25 to …
Management Implications Of Sex-Specific Habitat Use By Nycticeius Humeralis In North-Central Arkansas, Megan Lynn Buckley
Management Implications Of Sex-Specific Habitat Use By Nycticeius Humeralis In North-Central Arkansas, Megan Lynn Buckley
Student Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this study was to evaluate evening bat (Nycticeius humeralis) habitat use and provide a proxy strategy to evaluate habitat use by other species. I used the software Maximum Entropy to evaluate habitat suitability models for evening bats using three different modeling strategies; percent variable contribution, the jackknife test, and variable response curves. The predictors included in the models were 10 land use land cover classes, four forest management strategies, slope, and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The results of this research showed that distance to burned stands and proximity to edge habitat are the most important …
Synthesis Of Modified Biginelli Compounds, Michelle Sarah Collins
Synthesis Of Modified Biginelli Compounds, Michelle Sarah Collins
Student Theses and Dissertations
The Biginelli reaction has been a distinguished reaction for many years. Their products, the Dihydropyrimidones have been shown to contain a vast array of bioactivity especially when they contain other known bioactive functional groups. Here in we discuss different pathways that these DHPM products can be taken down to combine them with other such bioactive functional groups. We explored the addition of alkene and aldehyde groups to the Biginelli compounds in hopes of synthesizing potential drug candidates. We believe the synthesis of the aldehyde group on the DHPM compounds is a gateway to obtaining the hybrid drug activity we so …
The Zombie Apocalypse Has Already Happened: Queering Subjectivity In Zombie Film, Jessica Dunn
The Zombie Apocalypse Has Already Happened: Queering Subjectivity In Zombie Film, Jessica Dunn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation traces the encounter between psychology as a human science and the viral zombie film genre using the collaborative works of Deleuze and Guattari in conjunction with the queer anti-humanist theories of Colebrook and Halberstam. I interwove thematic (i.e. plot, dialogue, character development) and cinematographic (i.e. shot composition, editing, lighting, musical score) analyses of fourteen viral zombie films with theoretical arguments regarding the deterritorialization of the human subject and its relevance to psychology as a human science. The films were selected from the plethora of viral zombie films released after the turn of the 21st century. The selection was …
Back In The Closet: A Queer-Modified Interpretive-Phenomenological Analysis Of Gay Men Creating An Identity Through Clothing, Jose Arroyo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
How one dresses comprises their personal style, which subsequently informs one’s orientation to the world. Clothing is a global practice that demarcates our experience of self, others, and the world; and—as we are swathed in clothing since birth—those experiences are primarily split among gendered lines. Using Merleau-Ponty (2014/1945), I reconceptualize how clothing can be understood as inseparable from our body, and I use Deleuze and Guattari (1987/1980) to illustrate how clothing augments our embodied experience to produce a process of identification with our style. I also draw from queer theorists (Ahmed, 2006; Halberstam, 2011) to illustrate how we can disrupt …
End-Of-Life Care Practices In Two Cultures: A Comparative Ethical Analysis And Recommendations, Nora Alharbi
End-Of-Life Care Practices In Two Cultures: A Comparative Ethical Analysis And Recommendations, Nora Alharbi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
This dissertation examined the similarities and differences between the end-of-life care strategies employed in the United States and Saudi Arabia. End-of-life care has emerged in recent decades as a medical practice specialty. It has taken on enhanced significance in the United States in tandem with the aging of the Baby Boomer generation, but it is also a significant focus of practice and research in other countries as well. In the context of Saudi Arabia, however, end-of-life care is still very much an emerging phenomenon that is being shaped and informed by Saudi culture, tradition and the Islamic faith.

Groundwater Flow And Exchange Across The Land Surface Explain Carbon Export Patterns In Continuous Permafrost Watersheds, Bethany T. Neilson, M. Bayani Cardenas, Michael T. O'Connor, Mitchell T. Rasmussen, Tyler V. King, George W. Kling
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
Groundwater flow regimes in the seasonally thawed soils in areas of continuous permafrost are relatively unknown despite their potential role in delivering water, carbon, and nutrients to streams. Using numerical groundwater flow models informed by observations from a headwater catchment in arctic Alaska, United States, we identify several mechanisms that result in substantial surface‐subsurface water exchanges across the land surface during downslope transport and create a primary control on dissolved organic carbon loading to streams and rivers. The models indicate that surface water flowing downslope has a substantial groundwater component due to rapid surface‐subsurface exchanges across a range of hydrologic …

Characterization Of Sites For Native Herbaceous Understory Restoration In West Gulf Coast Longleaf Pine (Pinus Palustris) Savannas, Brooke Mccalip
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) savannas were once dominant in East Texas and parts of western and central Louisiana. Native understory species have since been removed or reduced by exotic plants that were introduced and from the reduction in the frequency of both wild and prescribed fires. A diverse layer of understory species can still be seen today, but not often in the historical savanna setting that is desirable in longleaf pine ecosystems. This project aimed to identify site characteristics associated with longleaf ecosystems that support a dense, herbaceous understory with little to no midstory cover.

The goal of this thesis was to identify the differences between the costs incurred and revenues gained from managing loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) plantations in East Texas for strictly timber production or a combination of timber production and wildlife biodiversity. Management regimes evaluated had varying planting densities, thinning frequency and intensities, prescribed burn intervals, and site indices. Economic analyses used to evaluate management regimes over a range of nonindustrial private landowner (NIPF) alternative rates of return (ARRs) and site indexes were net present worth, land expectation value, and equal annual annuity. These economic analyses demonstrated that altering management …
Breeding Bird Response To Post Oak Savanna Restoration Seven Years Post Management In Eastern Texas, Courtney Mcinnerney
Breeding Bird Response To Post Oak Savanna Restoration Seven Years Post Management In Eastern Texas, Courtney Mcinnerney
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Oak savannas were once an abundant vegetation type in the Midwestern United States that have now declined to <1% of their original distribution. Historically, natural disturbances such as periodic fire and grazing maintained oak savannas, but these have been reduced or eliminated, resulting in woody encroachment and subsequent habitat loss and degradation. In 2009-10, a baseline, pre-restoration study was completed to determine vegetation characteristics, breeding bird abundances, nest success, and nest site selection at the Gus Engeling Wildlife Management Area (GEWMA) in eastern Texas. The results showed a lack of savanna vegetation structure on degraded sites and few savanna or grassland obligate bird species. The goal of this study was to determine how breeding birds of oak savanna vegetation types in eastern Texas respond to restoration effects 7 years after initial management. Post-restoration surveys completed in 2016-17 showed a change in avian assemblages from a more woodland dominated community to grassland/savanna community. The presence and breeding of savanna obligate species dickcissel (Spiza americana) and lark sparrow (Chondestes grammacus) indicates that the restoration was successful. The presence of savanna species can be linked to the herbaceous vegetation that was restored to more closely resemble historic oak savanna structure and can quantify the success of restoration efforts.
