Investigations Of The Effects Of Reading Skill And Epistemological Beliefs On Learning In General Chemistry, And How Students Use Textbooks To Study, Rene Buell Sep 2018

Investigations Of The Effects Of Reading Skill And Epistemological Beliefs On Learning In General Chemistry, And How Students Use Textbooks To Study, Rene Buell

Doctoral Dissertations

Understanding how student characteristics affect learning in chemistry can influence the pedagogical strategies employed by chemistry instructors. Previous studies have investigated the effects of characteristics including prior knowledge, math ability, and motivations on course performance. Student characteristics can also influence study strategies employed by students. Few studies, however, have focused on the role of language and reading comprehension skill on learning in chemistry, and fewer have investigated the levels of epistemological beliefs of general chemistry students. Three studies are presented in this dissertation. In the first study, the effects of prior knowledge and reading comprehension skill on learning from reading …

Genetic Dissection Of Non-Host Resistance To The Wheat Stem Rust Pathogen, Using An Interspecific Barberry Hybrid, Radhika Bartaula Sep 2018

Genetic Dissection Of Non-Host Resistance To The Wheat Stem Rust Pathogen, Using An Interspecific Barberry Hybrid, Radhika Bartaula

Doctoral Dissertations

Stem rust, caused by the macrocyclic fungal pathogen P. graminis (Pg), is one of the most devastating diseases of wheat and other small grains globally; and the emergence of new stem rust races virulent on deployed resistance genes brings urgency to the discovery of more durable sources of genetic resistance. Given its intrinsic durability and effectiveness across a broad range of pathogens, non-host resistance (NHR) presents a compelling strategy for achieving long-term rust control in wheat. However, NHR to Pg (Pg-NHR) remains largely unexplored as a protection strategy in wheat, in part due to the challenge of developing a genetically …

Variation In Plant Water Use, Growth, And Water-Use Efficiency Of Planted Mixtures And Monocultures: Toward Proper Species Selection For Reforestation Efforts In The Seasonally Dry Tropics, Katherine Sinacore Sep 2018

Variation In Plant Water Use, Growth, And Water-Use Efficiency Of Planted Mixtures And Monocultures: Toward Proper Species Selection For Reforestation Efforts In The Seasonally Dry Tropics, Katherine Sinacore

Doctoral Dissertations

In recent years, there has been a trend towards reforesting previously degraded areas by planting trees. While plantations offer an opportunity to restore ecosystem functions and diversity, most reforested plantations currently consist of monocultures, or single-species systems. Originally planted to provide wood for both global and regional markets, monocultures provide only a few goods and services and reduce plant biodiversity in comparison to multi-species systems, like forests. An alternative to the current plantation design is planting mixed species systems. Beyond diversifying a plantation, mixed species stands provide an opportunity to enhance ecosystem services that include non-timber forest products, carbon sequestration, …

Biophysical Properties Of An Antifreeze Protein And The Effects Of Ionic Liquids On The Model Protein Gb1, Korth Wade Elliott Sep 2018

Biophysical Properties Of An Antifreeze Protein And The Effects Of Ionic Liquids On The Model Protein Gb1, Korth Wade Elliott

Doctoral Dissertations

Antifreeze proteins (AFPs) are a unique class of protein characterized by their ability to depress the freezing point of water sufficient to prevent the formation of ice crystals by adsorbing to the surface of ice crystals. This unique ability allows organisms (e.g. plants, fish, insects, etc.) which live in extremely cold climates to survive. Because of these proteins’ ability to prevent and slow the rate of ice crystal formation, they have great potential in the application of cryopreservation in medicine, agriculture and food science. Antifreeze proteins have been known for over five decades, however, their exact mechanism of action is …

Optical Properties Of The Pigments From Cephalopod Chromatophores: Solution And Particle Determination, Sean Ryan Dinneen Sep 2018

Optical Properties Of The Pigments From Cephalopod Chromatophores: Solution And Particle Determination, Sean Ryan Dinneen

Doctoral Dissertations

Cephalopods are arguably one of the most photonically sophisticated marine animals, as they can rapidly adapt their dermal color and texture to their surroundings using both structural and pigmentary coloration. Their chromatophore organs facilitate this process, but the molecular mechanism potentiating color change is not well understood. The central hypothesis of this work is that the pigments, which are localized within nanostructured granules in the chromatophore, enhance the scattering of light within the dermal tissue. To test this, phenoxazone-based pigments were first extracted from the chromatophore and their complex refractive index (RI) from experimentally determined real and approximated imaginary portions …

A Triaxiality-Dependent Constitutive Model For Predicting Damage-Induced Softening In 3d-Printed Soft Suture Layer, Lei Liu Sep 2018

A Triaxiality-Dependent Constitutive Model For Predicting Damage-Induced Softening In 3d-Printed Soft Suture Layer, Lei Liu

Doctoral Dissertations

Adhesive interfacial layers are ubiquitous in both engineering and natural material systems. They are essential in governing the mechanical behaviors of these materials. Especially, in the field of biological and bio-inspired materials, soft interfacial layer plays very important role in mechanics of them. The rapid development of 3D printing enables high quality bonding between dissimilar materials, providing an opportunity to fabricate biomimetic composites with arbitrary morphology. Along with this new development, new challenges appear in constitutive modeling and the prediction of damage initiation and evolution of 3D printed materials. To meet this need in the field, the model and methodology …

Dysregulation Of O-Linked Β-N-Acetylglucosamine (O-Glcnac) Cycling Supports Tumorigenicity Of Cancers Of The Female Reproductive Tract, Nicole Jaskiewicz Sep 2018

Dysregulation Of O-Linked Β-N-Acetylglucosamine (O-Glcnac) Cycling Supports Tumorigenicity Of Cancers Of The Female Reproductive Tract, Nicole Jaskiewicz

Doctoral Dissertations

Hyper-O-GlcNAcylation of proteins is a subsequent artifact of metabolic disorder and is indicative of many cancers, including cancers of the female reproductive tract. While the incidence of most cancer types has been declining in the U.S., endometrial and cervical cancer remain among the most common cancers diagnosed in women. Diabetic women have a 2-3 fold increased risk of developing endometrial cancer, and tend to have more aggressive cases of cervical cancer, however, the molecular aspects of these risks are not fully understood. This study investigated the alteration of cellular O-GlcNAcylation of proteins as the potential mechanistic connection between diabetes and …
