Parents Frame Childhood For The World To See In Digital Media Postings, Aysenur Benevento Sep 2018

Parents Frame Childhood For The World To See In Digital Media Postings, Aysenur Benevento

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

With the wellbeing of children being at the center of contemporary media discourse (Livingstone & Bovill, 2013), developmental studies are ever more challenged to understand both children’s and adults’ behavior in online spaces. Parents and children are involved in the human development process in complementary ways (Johansson, 2010; Uprichards, 2008) while using media platforms. As the development and use of innovative media technology are accelerating at a fast pace, theory and methods for analyzing uses of digital media for human development have lagged behind. This study examines adults’ postings of photos of their children on social media and offers a …

Educational Attainment Of Immigrant Students In The United States: Generational Struggle Towards Success, Robin Das Sep 2018

Educational Attainment Of Immigrant Students In The United States: Generational Struggle Towards Success, Robin Das

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Known as the land of opportunities, United States has always been a key attraction to outside world as the place where people can live up to their potential dreams. People migrate from far lands to settle down and find the missing link that was absent in their native country. Among numerous reasons, financial inefficiency and social and political insecurity at homeland, new immigration policies in the US, expectation of a better socio-economic lifestyle and a secure and prosperous future for their children are some key reasons why immigrants move out of their motherland and travel to America. They hope and …

A Preliminary Program Evaluation Of A Narrative Therapy Intervention For Persons Incarcerated For Violent Crime, Brooke C. Greene

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The Longtermers Project is a fifteen-session group therapy intervention that has been run in three prisons in New York state, two men’s facilities and one women’s, since 2010. The Coming to Terms curriculum, designed specifically for work with this population by Kathy Boudin and her partners at the Osborne Association, a non-profit organization that provides assistance to formerly and currently incarcerated persons in New York state, asks participants to think, write, and speak about their lives in general and particularly about the incident crime for which they were incarcerated. Now that the program has run for several years and a …

Mechanisms Adopted By Dengue-2 Viruses To Induce Autophagy In Mammalian Cells, Sounak Ghosh Roy Sep 2018

Mechanisms Adopted By Dengue-2 Viruses To Induce Autophagy In Mammalian Cells, Sounak Ghosh Roy

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Dengue, the most rapidly spreading flavivirus, threatens to affect almost half of the human global population. We previously showed that dengue-2 protects canine kidney cells (MDCK) from cytotoxic chemicals. We showed, independently, that cell protection, as well as viral replication and maturation, are positively regulated by PI3K-dependent autophagy. However, we had not identified the specific pathway that induces autophagy in infected cells. The current study explores the role of a specific branch of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-mediated Unfolded Protein Response (UPR), the PERK/eIF2α/ATF4 pathway in the induction of autophagy by …

“Are They Supposed To Be Heugin?": Negotiating Race, Nation, And Representation In Korean Musical Theatre, Ji Hyon Yuh Sep 2018

“Are They Supposed To Be Heugin?": Negotiating Race, Nation, And Representation In Korean Musical Theatre, Ji Hyon Yuh

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation examines contemporary Korean musical theatre as a form of popular culture that has served an important role in reflecting and establishing personal and national identity in Korea, especially as it intersects with the global and local manifestations of race and racial ideologies. I argue that musical theatre has served an important political and economic role, since its beginning as a cultural weapon in the height of the Cold War to more contemporary examples in which Korean musicals serve as a tool to brand Korea as an advanced nation in the world. To make a case for this relationship …

Visualizing Knowledge In The Illuminated Manuscripts Of The Breviari D’Amor, Joy Partridge Sep 2018

Visualizing Knowledge In The Illuminated Manuscripts Of The Breviari D’Amor, Joy Partridge

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Diagrams blur the line between text and image; they are both tools for communicating linguistic meaning and powerfully evocative visual forms. However, scholarship on medieval diagrams has focused primarily on their didactic functions, emphasizing the ways in which monks and other scholars used diagrams as tools for learning—about everything from Christian theology to ancient philosophy—and for developing modes of thought that support such learning. In the late Middle Ages, as education expanded beyond the realm of the intellectual elite, new book types emerged. One of which, the encyclopedia, endeavored to simultaneously instruct and delight a broader, non-monastic and non-scholastic audience, …

Compact Gene Regulatory Cassettes Support Hallmark Features Of T-Cell Receptor (Tcr)-Alpha Gene Locus Control Region (Lcr) Activity, Jordana Lovett Sep 2018

Compact Gene Regulatory Cassettes Support Hallmark Features Of T-Cell Receptor (Tcr)-Alpha Gene Locus Control Region (Lcr) Activity, Jordana Lovett

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Despite the promise of emerging stem cell transplant gene therapy strategies, there remains a gap in the ability to predictably generate robust, temporally controlled long-lasting, therapeutic gene expression in specific target cell lineages following stem cell differentiation. There exists a locus control region (LCR) in the mouse T-cell receptor (TCR)-α locus that confers an ab TCR-like spatiotemporal expression pattern upon a linked transgene, regardless of its site of integration in the genome. These properties are well suited to direction of high-level, physiological expression of therapeutic antigen receptor genes to the T cell progeny of vector-transduced stem cells. The endogenous LCR …

The Threats Of Sea Level Rise: An Eco-Geopolitical Visual Analysis, Jorge L. Nowell-Enriquez Sep 2018

The Threats Of Sea Level Rise: An Eco-Geopolitical Visual Analysis, Jorge L. Nowell-Enriquez

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This eco-geopolitical research produces information about the sea level rising, and the analyst explains and projects global effects, and further problems and consequences of the phenomena in a five-minute-long video clip.

The focus is coastlines floods as a consequence of the sea level rising produced by glaciers melting. The floods will affect regions where over a billion persons are living, mainly coastal cities. Therefore, the sea level rising will produce or ease gradual destruction and sudden catastrophes. Moreover, these catastrophes will spur mass migration that might change the lives of a billion persons by 2045.

Feeling As Knowing: Trans Phenomenology And Epistemic Justice, B. Lee Aultman Sep 2018

Feeling As Knowing: Trans Phenomenology And Epistemic Justice, B. Lee Aultman

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation is a critical intervention into the literatures on epistemic and phenomenological claims about trans experiences, and embodied knowledge more generally. It also addresses the conception of ordinary affects, or feelings of self-adjustment in everyday life, and their political implications for trans people. Traditional literatures on the political tend to avoid questions of embodiment and the experiences of everyday life in favor of institutional interpretations of courts, elections, and protest movements. This has become particularly true of scholarship on trans politics and theories of ordinary life. These literatures often reduce political movements to their presumed universal intentions for constitutional …

Renal Risk Variants Of Apolipoprotein L-1 Form Channels At The Plasma Membrane That Lead To A Cytotoxic Influx Of Calcium, Joseph A. Giovinazzo Sep 2018

Renal Risk Variants Of Apolipoprotein L-1 Form Channels At The Plasma Membrane That Lead To A Cytotoxic Influx Of Calcium, Joseph A. Giovinazzo

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Apolipoprotein L-1 (APOL1) is a secreted protein that provides protection against several protozoan parasites due to its channel forming properties. Recently evolved variants, G1 and G2, increase kidney disease risk when present in two copies. In mammalian cells, overexpression of G1 and G2, but not wild-type G0, leads to swelling and eventual lysis. However, the mechanism of cell death remains elusive with multiple pathways being invoked, such as autophagic cell death mediated by a BH3 domain in APOL1, which we evaluated in this study. We hypothesized that the common trigger for these pathways is the APOL1 cation channel, which is …

Curcumin Inhibits The Ikk:Nf-Kappa B Pathway In Neural Fear Circuits, Miguel A. Briones Sep 2018

Curcumin Inhibits The Ikk:Nf-Kappa B Pathway In Neural Fear Circuits, Miguel A. Briones

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The study of how the brain acquires fearful memories has attracted considerable experimental attention, due in part to the promise of discovering novel therapeutic approaches for psychiatric disorders that are characterized by unusually strong and persistent traumatic memories. In recent years, extensive research has focused on studying the neural and molecular mechanisms by which fear memories are acquired, stored, and retrieved in the brain. Once acquired, fear memories may be attenuated using one of 2 procedures: 1) fear extinction, which involves repeated presentation of the fear-arousing stimulus in the absence of an aversive consequence, or 2) interference with the reconsolidation …

Resting-State Functional Connectivity In Youth With Gender Dysphoria, Felix L. Garcia Sep 2018

Resting-State Functional Connectivity In Youth With Gender Dysphoria, Felix L. Garcia

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Current developmental models of gender identity and gender dysphoria (GD) lack sex-specific profiles of brain function that differentiate between typically-developing and cross-gender identified youth, as postulated by models like the unified theory of the origins of sex differences (Arnold, 2009) and the neurobiological theory of the origins of transsexuality (Swaab & Garcia-Falgueras, 2009). Previously, investigators have used brain imaging modalities such as Resting-State functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (R-fMRI) to demonstrate differences in resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) between typically-developing male and female youth, and between typically-developing and GID-diagnosed youth. In the present pilot study, I used R-fMRI to investigate differences in …

Crystal Structure Of A Homoleptic Zinc(Ii) Complex Based On Bis(3,5-DiisoPropylPyrazol-1-Yl)Acetate, Josiah G. Elsberg, Nicholas G. Spiropulos, Adam C. Colson, Eric C. Brown

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Deprotonation of the methylene group in bis(3,5-diisopropylpyrazol-1-yl)methane with nBuLi and reaction with carbon dioxide yields lithium bis(3,5-diisopropylpyrazol-1-yl)acetate (1). Treatment of 1 with ZnCl2 results in the compound bis[bis(3,5-diisopropylpyrazol-1-yl)acetato]zinc(II), [Zn(C20H31N4O2)2] (2), whose structure has monoclinic (P21/c) symmetry. The ZnII ion resides on an inversion center and is coordinated by two bis(3,5-diisopropylpyrazol-1-yl)acetate (bdippza) ligands. Each ligand facially coordinates the zinc center via κ3N,N′,O coordination modes to form a distorted octahedral complex with four …

Despite the rapid rise in diversity and quantities of engineered nanomaterials produced, the impacts of these emerging contaminants on the structure and function of ecosystems have received little attention from ecologists. Moreover, little is known about how manufactured nanomaterials may interact with nutrient pollution in altering ecosystem productivity, despite the recognition that eutrophication is the primary water quality issue in freshwater ecosystems worldwide. In this study, we asked two main questions: (1) To what extent do manufactured nanoparticles affect the biomass and productivity of primary producers in wetland ecosystems? (2) How are these impacts mediated by nutrient pollution? To address …

Bgge: A New Package For Genomic-Enabled Prediction Incorporating Genotype × Environment Interaction Models, Italo Granato, Jaime Cuevas, Francisco Luna-Vázquez, Jose Crossa, Osval Montesinos-López, Juan Burgueño, Roberto Fritsche-Neto

Faculty Publications

One of the major issues in plant breeding is the occurrence of genotype × environment (GE) interaction. Several models have been created to understand this phenomenon and explore it. In the genomic era, several models were employed to improve selection by using markers and account for GE interaction simultaneously. Some of these models use special genetic covariance matrices. In addition, the scale of multi-environment trials is getting larger, and this increases the computational challenges. In this context, we propose an R package that, in general, allows building GE genomic covariance matrices and fitting linear mixed models, in particular, to a …

Fibroblast Growth Factor23 Is Associated With Axonal Integrity And Neural Network Architecture In The Human Frontal Lobes, Barbara K. Marebwa, Robert J. Adams, Gayenell S. Magwood, Mark S. Kindy, Janina Wilmskoetter, Myles Wolf, Leonardo Bonihla

Pharmacy Faculty Publications

Elevated levels of FGF23 in individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are associated with adverse health outcomes, such as increased mortality, large vessel disease, and reduced white matter volume, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events. Apart from the well-known link between cardiovascular (CV) risk factors, especially diabetes and hypertension, and cerebrovascular damage, elevated FGF23 is also postulated to be associated with cerebrovascular damage independently of CKD. Elevated FGF23 predisposes to vascular calcification and is associated with vascular stiffness and endothelial dysfunction in the general population with normal renal function. These factors may lead to microangiopathic changes in the brain, cumulative ischemia, and …

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States, affecting approximately 11 million patients. AMD is caused primarily by an upregulation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). In recent years, aflibercept injections have been used to combat VEGF. However, this treatment requires frequent intravitreal injections, leading to low patient compliance and several adverse side effects including scarring, increased intraocular pressure, and retinal detachment. Polymeric nanoparticles have demonstrated the ability to deliver a sustained release of drug, thereby reducing the necessary injection frequency. Aflibercept (AFL) was encapsulated in poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) nanoparticles (NPs) …

Expanding The Scope Of Universal Design: Implications For Gender Identity And Sexual Orientation, Ellyn Couillard, Jeanne L. Higbee

Pharmacy Faculty Publications

This article encourages postsecondary educators to expand the scope of applications of universal design and universal instructional design by exploring how principles of UD and UID can be applied to other social identities, and specifically to gender identity and sexual orientation. There are many parallels that can be drawn between students who are excluded because of their disability and students who are marginalized on the basis of nonconforming gender identity or sexual orientation. It is important that faculty and staff understand intersectionality and interdependence among social identities and consider what steps they can take to apply UID principles in ways …

The Impact Of Perineuronal Net Digestion Using Chondroitinase Abc On The Intrinsic Physiology Of Cortical Neurons, Philip Chu, Reena Abraham, Kumarie Budhu, Usma Khan, Natalie De Marco Garcia, Joshua C. Brumberg Sep 2018

The Impact Of Perineuronal Net Digestion Using Chondroitinase Abc On The Intrinsic Physiology Of Cortical Neurons, Philip Chu, Reena Abraham, Kumarie Budhu, Usma Khan, Natalie De Marco Garcia, Joshua C. Brumberg

Publications and Research

Perineuronal nets (PNNs) are a form of aggregate Extracellular Matrix (ECM) in the brain. Recent evidence suggests that the postnatal deposition of PNNs may play an active role in regulating neuroplasticity and, potentially, neurological disorders. Observations of high levels of PNNs expression around somas, proximal dendrites, and axon initial segments of a subtype of neurons have also led to proposals that PNNs may modulate the intrinsic properties of the neurons they ensheathe. While high levels of PNNs are postnatally expressed throughout the neocortex, it is still unclear how they impact the neuronal physiology of the many classes and subtypes of …

The Tallgrass Prairie Soundscape; Employing An Ecoacoustic Approach To Understand Grassland Response To Prescribed Burns And The Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Nechrophilous Invertebrate Communities, Sarah Dodgin

Master's Theses and Capstones

Tallgrass prairies are rapidly vanishing biodiversity hotspots for native and endemic species, yet little is known regarding how spatial and temporal variation of prairie soundscapes relates to seasonal changes, disturbance patterns and biological communities. Ecoacoustics, the study of environmental sounds using passive acoustics as a non-invasive tool for investigating ecological complexity, allows for long-term data to be captured without disrupting biological communities. Two studies were carried out by employing ecoacoustic methodology to study grassland carrion food webs and to capture the phenology of a grassland soundscape following a prescribed burn. Both studies were conducted at the Nature Conservancy’s Tallgrass Prairie …

The kiwiberry (Actinidia arguta) has an extensive 140-year history of being grown in New England as an ornamental vine but has only recently been adopted as a commercial fruit crop. As regional and international acreage in commercial production continues to increase, the need for a comprehensive production guides and regionally-specific enterprise analyses has become evident. This thesis brings together the most recent findings of the Kiwiberry Development Program at the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station, along with available commercial kiwiberry production information, to address this need. Specifically, this guide presents an overview of the species, current best production practices, regionally-relevant …

The Effects Of Cortisol, Stress And Rearing Temperature On Black Sea Bass (Centropristis Striata) Sex Differentiation, Kelsie A. Miller Sep 2018

The Effects Of Cortisol, Stress And Rearing Temperature On Black Sea Bass (Centropristis Striata) Sex Differentiation, Kelsie A. Miller

Master's Theses and Capstones

Teleosts exhibit some of the most diverse array of reproductive strategies of all vertebrates, including gonochorism and hermaphroditism. Black sea bass (BSB; Centropristis striata) are protogynous hermaphrodites that undergo sex change between 2-6 years of age in the wild. Transition is initiated earlier in captivity and a greater percentage of fish differentiate directly as males. Captivity and environmental factors, such as temperature, can activate a stress response in fish that can lead to increased production of cortisol, the primary glucocorticoid released following a stressor. Cortisol treatment during sensitive developmental periods has been shown to have masculinizing effects on many teleost …
