Home Range And Microhabitat Associations Of The Southern Red-Backed Vole (Myodes Gapperi) In New Hampshire Forests, Honora Tisell
Home Range And Microhabitat Associations Of The Southern Red-Backed Vole (Myodes Gapperi) In New Hampshire Forests, Honora Tisell
Master's Theses and Capstones
Resources, such as food and shelter, are unevenly distributed across the landscape at both macro and micro scales. Home range is one measure of space use that reflects an individual’s resource requirements (e.g., microhabitat characteristics) and competition for those resources (e.g., density dependence). This study focuses on the home range of the southern red-backed vole (Myodes gapperi), comparing field methods for estimating home range and modeling the microhabitat characteristics that define the core area of the home range. Southern red-backed voles (Myodes gapperi) are common to boreal forests, most often found in coniferous or mixed deciduous stands, and in the …
A Hydrokinetic Energy Conversion System For Use At Bridges With The Memorial Bridge As A Case Study, Ian Gagnon
A Hydrokinetic Energy Conversion System For Use At Bridges With The Memorial Bridge As A Case Study, Ian Gagnon
Master's Theses and Capstones
As a part of the Living Bridge Project on the Memorial Bridge between Portsmouth, NH and Kittery, ME a turbine deployment system for use at bridges was designed, built, and deployed. One of the purposes of the Living Bridge Project is to demonstrate that advantages to deploying hydrokinetic turbines at bridges exist. The expected advantages include 1) good hydrokinetic resources are likely to occur at bridges because bridges are typically built at constrictions where the flow tends to speed up, 2) existing bridge structures can be used as mooring points, 3) existing bridge permits can be leveraged to aid in …
Analysis Of Uncertainty In Underwater Multiview Reconstruction, Igor V. Kozlov
Analysis Of Uncertainty In Underwater Multiview Reconstruction, Igor V. Kozlov
Master's Theses and Capstones
Multiview reconstruction, a method for creating 3D models from multiple images from different views, has been a popular topic of research in the eld of computer vision in the last two decades. Increased availability of high-quality cameras led to the development of advanced techniques and algorithms. However, little attention has been paid to multiview reconstruction in underwater conditions. Researchers in a wide variety of elds (e.g. marine biology, archaeology, and geology) could benefit from having 3D models of seafloor and underwater objects. Cameras, designed to operate in air, must be put in protective housings to work underwater. This affects the …

Veratrum californicum is a rich source of steroidal alkaloids such as cyclopamine, a known inhibitor of the Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway. Here we provide a detailed analysis of the alkaloid composition of V. californicum by plant part through quantitative analysis of cyclopamine, veratramine, muldamine and isorubijervine in the leaf, stem and root/rhizome of the plant. To determine whether additional alkaloids in the extracts contribute to Hh signaling inhibition, the concentrations of these four alkaloids present in extracts were replicated using commercially available standards, followed by comparison of extracts to alkaloid standard mixtures for inhibition of Hh signaling using Shh-Light II …

Cause And Consequence Of Aβ – Lipid Interactions In Alzheimer Disease Pathogenesis, Vijayaraghavan Rangachari, Dexter N. Dean, Pratip Rana, Ashuwin Vaidya, Preetam Ghosh
Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Self-templating propagation of protein aggregate conformations is increasingly becoming a significant factor in many neurological diseases. In Alzheimer disease (AD), intrinsically disordered amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides undergo aggregation that is sensitive to environmental conditions. High-molecular weight aggregates of Aβ that form insoluble fibrils are deposited as senile plaques in AD brains. However, low-molecular weight aggregates called soluble oligomers are known to be the primary toxic agents responsible for neuronal dysfunction. The aggregation process is highly stochastic involving both homotypic (Aβ-Aβ) and heterotypic (Aβ with interacting partners) interactions. Two of the important members of interacting partners are membrane lipids and surfactants, to …
High Resolution Imaging Of Single Nanoparticles And Two-Dimensional Nano-Material By Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy, Tong Sun
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Electrochemistry at nanostructured interfaces is of significant current interest. Metal nanoparticles (NPs) and two-dimensional semiconductor nanomaterial are particularly important because of their applications in catalysis, energy conversion and storage, sensors, and medicine. Electrocatalytic processes at such nanostructured interfaces are essential for the generation of hydrogen and other types of fuels and photochemical energy conversion. Nanoscale electrochemical experiments require the fabrication and characterization of nanometer-size electrochemical probes. The main advantages of the nanoprobes include very fast mass-transfer rate, high signal-to-noise ratio and extremely fine spatial resolution of electrochemical imaging. During my Ph.D. research, nanoscale disk-type platinum electrochemical probes were developed for …
Threat-Related Attentional Bias In Relation To Anxiety And Depressive Symptoms In The General Population: The Potential Role Of Sex Effects, Beril Yaffe
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Heightened sensitivity to relevant environmental stimuli (attentional bias) has been observed in relation to clinical and non-clinical anxiety and depression symptoms. While depression symptoms are associated with sensitivity to disorder and self-relevant words, hypervigilance to threatening stimuli is observed in relation to anxiety symptoms. Furthermore, attentional bias has been shown to play an important role in the development and maintenance of depressive and anxiety disorders. Accordingly, a large body of literature has examined threat-related attentional bias in relation to symptoms of anxiety and depression. However, several methodological inconsistencies exist across studies, including variability in definitions of threat, lack of consideration …
Essence, Explanation, And Modal Knowledge, Antonella Mallozzi
Essence, Explanation, And Modal Knowledge, Antonella Mallozzi
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The primary aim of this project is to put forward a novel account of knowledge of metaphysical modality. I call this the “Essentialist Superexplanatory” account of modal knowledge, because it relies on the following two main theses: (a) knowledge of metaphysical necessity is grounded in knowledge of essence; and (b) essences are properties, sets of properties, or mechanisms, having distinctive explanatory powers for how things are. While thesis (a) is quite popular in the current debates, mostly thanks to Kit Fine’s recent work in modal metaphysics, thesis (b) introduces an original brand of essentialism. As I show by means of …
Finding Light In The Caves: Achieving Professional And Personal Bliss On A Journey In Cheeseworld, Mitchell Bleier
Finding Light In The Caves: Achieving Professional And Personal Bliss On A Journey In Cheeseworld, Mitchell Bleier
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The most common approach to educating the populace places learners in contrived, curriculum-centered learning environments that are characterized by uniformity, standardization, and incessant high-stakes testing. The primacy of efficiency, an externally imposed and shifting set of non-negotiables, and top-down management dominate schooling. This set of circumstances tends to marginalize learners whose particular attributes, needs, wants and goals locate them far from what can be considered representative of the average student. In other words, efficiency trumps difference and leaves many learners in need of alternative paths to happiness and fulfillment (Callahan, 1962).
This system works for some, but for many it …
Subthreshold Ptsd And Associated Psycholgical Distress In Trauma Exposed Male And Female Veterans, Matthew A. Southard
Subthreshold Ptsd And Associated Psycholgical Distress In Trauma Exposed Male And Female Veterans, Matthew A. Southard
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) represents the upper end of a stress-response continuum to traumatic events, rather than a discrete pathological syndrome (Ruscio, et al., 2002). Individuals with PTSD report higher levels of anxiety, depression, anger, aggression, and adjustment difficulties compared to non-traumatized individuals (Ginzburg, Ein-Dor, & Soloman, 2009; Thompson et al, 2011; Novaco and Chemtob, 2002; Kotler et al, 2001; Orth & Wieland, 2006). Subthreshold PTSD represents a less severe range on the stress-response continuum and these individuals may experience similar rates of symptoms of anger, aggression, and depression as those with full-PTSD (Jakupcak, et al., 2007; Mylle & Maes, …

Works discussed in this thesis include: the characterization of a new disruptive solid polymer electrolyte technology, investigations of the dynamics of super …
Oil Pollution On The High Seas: The Establishment Of An International Regime To Deal With Public International Law And Private Law Issues And The Role Of Non-State Actors In Their Resolution Prior To And At The 1969 International Legal Conference On Marine Pollution Damage (“Brussels Conference”), Milton Ottensoser
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
On March 18, 1967, the Torrey Canyon, an oil tanker flying the flag of Liberia and carrying thirty million gallons of crude oil, smashed onto rocks off the coast of the United Kingdom. The oil spill metastasized into an environmental catastrophe, and this event became the first major environmental disaster of the electronic media age. As a direct result of the Torrey Canyon catastrophe, two treaties were signed in November 1969, at a conference in Brussels sponsored by the Intergovernmental Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO), a United Nations Specialized Agency. The first treaty (the public law treaty) dealt with the right …
Towards An Atomic Level Model Of The Structure And Calmodulin Mediated Activation Of Eef-2k, Nathan E. Will
Towards An Atomic Level Model Of The Structure And Calmodulin Mediated Activation Of Eef-2k, Nathan E. Will
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Eukaryotic elongation factor 2 kinase (eEF-2K), the only calmodulin (CaM) dependent member of the a-kinase, phosphorylates eukaryotic elongation factor 2 (eEF-2) on a specific residue (Thr-56), decreasing its affinity for the ribosome and reducing the rate of peptide chain elongation during protein translation. In contrast to the “release-of-inhibition’ mechanism operative in most CaM-dependent proteins kinases, the activation of eEF-2K is proposed to occur through a two-step process subsequent to the engagement of CaM and involves (1) auto-phosphorylation on T348 and (2) engagement of an allosteric site by phospho-T348 leading to a state with the highest activity towards the substrate eEF-2. …
Strategies Involving The Food-Derived Agent Curcumin To Eliminate Brain Cancer, Sumit Mukherjee
Strategies Involving The Food-Derived Agent Curcumin To Eliminate Brain Cancer, Sumit Mukherjee
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Glioblastoma (GBM) is one of the most deadly forms of cancer with a mean 5-year survival rate of ≤5%. We have used the non-invasive strategy of long-term intranasal (IN) delivery of a glioblastoma-directed adduct of curcumin (CC), CC-CD68Ab, into the brain of murine GBM cell line GL261-implanted mice to study the therapeutic effect of CC on GBM remission. The treatment caused GBM tumor remission in 50% of GL261-implanted GBM mice. A similar rescue rate (60%) was also achieved through long-term intraperitoneal (i.p) infusion of a highly bioavailable phosphotidylcholine (PC)-encapsulated formulation of CC, Curcumin Phytosome Meriva (CCP), into the GL261-implanted GBM …
Experimental Philosophy And Feminist Epistemology: Conflicts And Complements, Amanda Huminski
Experimental Philosophy And Feminist Epistemology: Conflicts And Complements, Amanda Huminski
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The recent turn toward experimental philosophy, particularly in ethics and epistemology, might appear to be supported by feminist epistemology, insofar as experimental philosophy signifies a break from the tradition of primarily white, middle-class men attempting to draw universal claims from within the limits of their own experience and research. However, the relationship between the two is not so straightforward, and an analysis of their connection bears on broader questions concerning intuitions, philosophical methodology, and epistemic standards more generally. This dissertation project aims to 1) examine the conception of intuitions that appears to underpin many projects in experimental philosophy, 2) levy …
A Functional Neuroimaging Study Of Self-Regulatory Control In Adults With Gambling And Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders, Nidhi Parashar
A Functional Neuroimaging Study Of Self-Regulatory Control In Adults With Gambling And Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders, Nidhi Parashar
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Objective: Recent findings suggest phenomenological similarities across gambling and obsessive-compulsive disorders. The key similarity between the disorders is the failure to inhibit or control a repetitive behavior (or urges to engage in a behavior) and intrusive thoughts. Our current understanding of the neural pathophysiological mechanisms linking gambling and obsessive-compulsive disorders is limited. Thus, the aim of the present study was to examine the functioning of frontostriatal brain regions that support self-regulatory control in adults with gambling and obsessive-compulsive disorders.
Methods: The study compared functional magnetic resonance imaging blood oxygen level dependent response in 19 adults with pathological gambling (PG), …
The Relationship Between Parenting And Child Trauma: An Intergenerational Investigation, Miriam A. Dreyer
The Relationship Between Parenting And Child Trauma: An Intergenerational Investigation, Miriam A. Dreyer
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This study examined the intergenerational transmission of trauma by investigating the relationship between parental trauma and child trauma exposure by considering parenting variables including emotion regulation, aggression, monitoring, and punitiveness as potential mechanisms of transmission. Though ample research exists which suggests that experiences of trauma are passed down from one generation to the next, this intergenerational transmission is not inevitable, and the mechanisms of transmission need to be better understood. Parenting is a crucial construct to examine given that it shapes interactions between two generations and represents a forum for intervention.
The study was a secondary analysis of a selection …

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In this dissertation, we introduce the concept of network-based statistical inference methods of two types: network structure inference and variable inference. For network structure inference, we introduce correlation matrix, graphical Lasso, network clustering and identify the influencer in the network. For variable inference, we also introduce from Bayesian network, to Random Markov Field and Ising Model, Boltzmann and Restricted Boltzmann machine and the algorithm of Belief Propagation. Last but not the least, we introduce the most widely used neural network family and its two main types: Convolutional Neural Network and Recurrent Neural Network.
In Chapter 3 we provide an example …
The Inter-Subject Correlation Of Eeg In Response To Naturalistic Stimuli, Samantha S. Cohen
The Inter-Subject Correlation Of Eeg In Response To Naturalistic Stimuli, Samantha S. Cohen
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Inter-subject correlation is a measure of the similarity of the brain activity of a group of people as they respond to the same naturalistic stimulus, typically a story or video, meant to simulate a real world experience. This thesis tests the hypothesis that the correlation of the brain responses of a group of people is indicative of stimulus engagement. The rationale is that the content of the stimulus drives brain activity in a consistent manner, while internal thoughts are divergent and result in uncorrelated activity. The inter-subject correlation (ISC) of neural responses have previously been assessed with fMRI, EEG, and …
The Politics Of Service: Affectivity, Social Relations, And The Power Of Tipping In The Restaurant Industry, Jacqueline A. Ross
The Politics Of Service: Affectivity, Social Relations, And The Power Of Tipping In The Restaurant Industry, Jacqueline A. Ross
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The #MeToo movement and the growing spotlight on sexual harassment and misconduct has increasingly brought industries and individuals into the public eye. The restaurant industry is one such industry to receive this spotlight. While most of the coverage has stemmed from celebrities, the misconduct of celebrity chefs has been paralleled by the stories of servers and their customers. The NY Times published several articles on harassment in the restaurant industry and some specifically focusing on the abuses that tipped workers face. Often these workers were women. When asked about experiences of harassment, responses were often that servers felt that they …
Dietary Curcumin Promotes Resilience To Chronic Social Defeat Stress In A Highly Susceptible Mouse Strain, Antonio V. Aubry
Dietary Curcumin Promotes Resilience To Chronic Social Defeat Stress In A Highly Susceptible Mouse Strain, Antonio V. Aubry
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Chronic exposure to stress is a risk factor for the development of major depression and post traumatic stress disorder in humans and induces depressive- and anxiety-like phenotypes in rodents. However, there are few pharmacological interventions available that effectively treat maladaptive responses to chronic stress in the clinical setting. One therapeutic agent that has recently shown promise in treating psychiatric disorders is curcumin, a yellow-pigmented polyphenol compound found in the turmeric plant. Curcumin has been shown to prevent the development of stressed-induced depressive-like behavior in rodents and reduce symptoms of depression in clinically diagnosed patients. In this dissertation, I investigated whether …
Wukongism: Monkey King, Kungfu/Jazz, And Asian/American Performance, Sissi Liu
Wukongism: Monkey King, Kungfu/Jazz, And Asian/American Performance, Sissi Liu
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Wukongism offers one of the first non-western epistemic frameworks to examine theatre and performance that traverse beyond the shifting taxonomies of national, cultural, racial boundaries, and in particular, Asian/American theatre and performance. Wukongism, or shapeshifter consciousness, is built on the narrative of Sun Wukong the Monkey King, a supernatural shapeshifting character from the 16th century classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. Juxtaposing physical shapeshifting (plastic surgery and performing of the racialized face) with institutional shapeshifting (reinventing and eliminating invisible and hypervisible boundaries), this dissertation project posits Wukongism as a means to examine the varying, fluid, and precarious …
Toward A Posthuman Ecology: Evolutionary Aesthetics In Transatlantic Romanticism, Kaitlin Mondello
Toward A Posthuman Ecology: Evolutionary Aesthetics In Transatlantic Romanticism, Kaitlin Mondello
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
My dissertation traces the vibrant interchange between Romantic literature and science in the nineteenth century that necessitated new forms of aesthetics. I argue that Romantic writers and scientists co-created a new way of understanding nature that moved away from hierarchical anthropocentrism toward what I call “posthuman ecology.” This work explores shared scientific, literary, and philosophical sources for Erasmus and Charles Darwin, Mary and Percy Shelley, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Emily Dickinson. I connect aesthetic innovation to ethics to ask more broadly how literature can provide an affective and effective space to represent and engage scientific discourse. I conclude that understanding …
The Upright Battle: Morphological Trends Of The Bipedal Pelvis, Nicole M. Webb
The Upright Battle: Morphological Trends Of The Bipedal Pelvis, Nicole M. Webb
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The shift to bipedal locomotion is a distinguishing feature of the human lineage that required substantial remodeling of the postcranium in hominins. The pelvis, due to its important functional role as a stabilizing and weight-bearing structure, has undergone one of the most drastic transformations in the skeleton to accommodate obligate bipedalism, thus making it a valuable region for studying locomotor behavior within the fossil record. Although bipedalism occurs in several mammalian groups, it is rare within primates and the ability to utilize a striding gait with an erect, or orthograde, posture remains unique to hominins. Orthograde posture in this context …
Characterizing Venom Gene Expression, Function And Species Diversity In Predatory Marine Snails Of The Terebridae, Juliette Gorson
Characterizing Venom Gene Expression, Function And Species Diversity In Predatory Marine Snails Of The Terebridae, Juliette Gorson
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The Terebridae is a group of predatory marine snails that use their venom to feed on marine annelids. Similar to other venomous organisms, the Terebridae have evolved over millions of years, diverging from their closest relative in the Paleocene era. This thesis investigates what is driving terebrid evolution and species diversification by applying a multidimensional approach.
