The Rationale For Taxpayer Support For Primary Industry Research And Innovation In Western Australia, Ross Kingwell
The Rationale For Taxpayer Support For Primary Industry Research And Innovation In Western Australia, Ross Kingwell
Research Reports
During the 2000s a common view in government circles was that governments were over-investing in primary industry research and innovation. In agreement with this view, the Western Australian (WA) government lessened its support for primary industry research and innovation over the last decade. The impacts of this reduced support are seen clearly in the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD). In 2008–09 its agricultural staff count was 1518, yet by the end of 2017–18 this will be under 800, with remaining staff working mostly in regulation, biosecurity and corporate services rather than research. So great has been the …

Adult Walleye Abundance And Subsequent Fry Production In The Tamarac River, Mn, Phillip Oswald
Adult Walleye Abundance And Subsequent Fry Production In The Tamarac River, Mn, Phillip Oswald
Biology Graduate Theses
Walleye reproductive success is of critical interest for the Red Lakes as this system is maintained entirely by natural reproduction and supports robust commercial and recreational fisheries. The Tamarac River, a major tributary to the Red Lakes, hosts a substantial Walleye spawning migration annually. The river drains the largest peat bog in the lower 48 states and thus experiences low dissolved oxygen at times. It is largely unknown how the potential anoxic bog water affects Walleye reproductive success each year and subsequent year class strength. Fyke nets were set from 2014-2018 to assess the relative abundance of adult Walleye spawning …
Achilles And The Tortoise: Some Caveats To Mathematical Modeling In Biology, Scott F. Gilbert
Achilles And The Tortoise: Some Caveats To Mathematical Modeling In Biology, Scott F. Gilbert
Biology Faculty Works
Mathematical modeling has recently become a much-lauded enterprise, and many funding agencies seek to prioritize this endeavor. However, there are certain dangers associated with mathematical modeling, and knowledge of these pitfalls should also be part of a biologist's training in this set of techniques. (1) Mathematical models are limited by known science; (2) Mathematical models can tell what can happen, but not what did happen; (3) A model does not have to conform to reality, even if it is logically consistent; (4) Models abstract from reality, and sometimes what they eliminate is critically important; (5) Mathematics can present a Platonic …
Spatial Distribution And Contamination Assessment Of Surface Heavy Metals Off The Western Guangdong Province And Northeastern Hainan Island, Qian Ge, Zuo George Xue, Fengyou Chu
Spatial Distribution And Contamination Assessment Of Surface Heavy Metals Off The Western Guangdong Province And Northeastern Hainan Island, Qian Ge, Zuo George Xue, Fengyou Chu
Faculty Publications
Surface sediments collected from the continental shelf off the western Guangdong Province and northeastern Hainan Island are analyzed for selected heavy metals contents including Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Zn, and As to determine spatial distribution, potential ecological risks, and sources. In addition, some of the controlling factors of heavy metals distribution are also discussed. The average heavy metals contents decrease in the order of Zn > Cr > Pb > Cu > As > Cd. The averaged pollution degree, as shown by the index of geo-accumulation (Igeo), decreases in the order of Zn > Cu > Pb > Cr > Cd > As. Due to the barrier of islands, the …

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences
Plastic production is prominently increasing and its pollution is an emerging environmental global health concern. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among nonsmoking plastic industry workers. Three hundred and forty volunteers male plastic industry workers were interviewed after medical history and examination; finally, 278 nonsmoking plastic industry workers were selected. The mean age for the participants was 38.03 ± 10.86 years and body mass index was 25.52 ± 3.15 (kg/m)2. The plastic industry workers had been exposed to plastic plant pollution for 8 hr daily, 6 days in a …

Student Research and Creative Projects 2018-2019
With the rise of anxiety within the United States, it is crucial to find safe and effective ways to alleviate symptoms. The purpose of this study was to examine how walking on a treadmill, participating in yoga, or quietly reading impacts state anxiety. This study included 40 (N=40) students studying psychology at Winona State University. Participants were randomly assigned to one of the three conditions. Participants completed the STAI-AD, an anxiety inventory measuring state and trait anxiety, before and after receiving their assigned condition. Analysis was done using a mixed between-within subjects’ analysis of variance to see if one condition …

Synthesis And Electrochemical Analysis Of Pdco/Mwcnt And Pdco/Go Towards Formic Acid Fuel Cells, Jakeline Morataya
Student Research and Creative Projects 2018-2019
With more and more technological advances being made, a growing global population, and greater push towards greener energy brings a great need for alternative sources of energy. In order to keep up with ever increasing demands for energy, direct formic acid fuel cells (DFAFCs) show great promise. However, the need for a cost effective, robust and efficient anodic catalyst towards DFAFCs is still imminent. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the efficiency, conductivity, and stability of palladium and cobalt binary nanocomposites on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Three nanocomposites were synthesized with varying amounts of cobalt and a fixed amount of …
Two-Spirit Development: How Indigenous Gender And Sexuality Result In Decolonization, Emma Tomb
Two-Spirit Development: How Indigenous Gender And Sexuality Result In Decolonization, Emma Tomb
Student Research and Creative Projects 2018-2019
Colonization, gender, and sexuality are inherently linked. This is particularly true for the indigenous populations of North America. Before the settlement of places like the United States and Canada, Native tribes had people that existed in specific roles in their communities that they considered third and fourth gendered. After colonization, through the forced assimilation of Native people through processes like boarding schools, these roles disappeared. For a long time, Anthropologists referred to third and fourth gendered people in their scholarship as “berdache” which has racist roots stemming from early interactions with French trappers. In the 20th century, Native Americans began …

Indigenous People’S Environmental Concerns: The Missing Piece In Ongoing Administrative And Political Decentralization In Africa, George Atisa, Aziza Zemrani, Matthew Weiss
Public Affairs and Security Studies Faculty Publications
Decentralization is assumed to make national governments more accountable and enables local people to get involved in governance decisions. This study examines the relationships and whether decentralization activities, policies and regulations support indigenous concerns for the environment. Much of the pristine and local lands globally have already been degraded through overexploitation of natural resources leading to significant loss of environmental benefits to people, especially the marginalized and indigenous communities. Using citizen-over-state and state-over-citizen theory, the influence of national level policies on local policies and vice versa is examined. Two sets of data are analyzed: reports from conservation organizations and peer …
