Extraction Kinetics, Physicochemical And Functional Properties Of Proteins Isolated From Channel Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus) By-Products, Yuqing Tan
Theses and Dissertations
Channel catfish raising is an important aquaculture in the United States. Mississippi ranks No.1 in catfish production for continuous 4 years. However, catfish fillet processing generates huge amount of by-products, including heads, bone frames, visceras and skins, which contain significant amount of proteins. Removing and utilization of proteins from the by-product would add value to the catfish industry. Collagen was extracted from catfish skin by: (1) acid extraction; (2) homogenization-aided; and (3) pepsin-aided extraction methods. Kinetic analysis of the extraction was performed. SDS-PAGE was performed to analysis the composition of proteins in collagens extracted under different conditions. Collages extracted by …

Characterization Of Gene Products Associated With Reduced Aflatoxin Accumulation In Maize (Zea Mays), Dafne Alves Winders
Theses and Dissertations
The fungus Aspergillus flavus L. is an agricultural threat, particularly for maize (Zea mays L.). Its invasive growth and contamination before and after harvest can lead to the loss of the commodity and cause life threating consequences to humans and livestock that consume a contaminated product. The differential expression profile of two resistant maize inbred lines, Mp313E and Mp719, and two susceptible maize inbred lines, B73 and Va35, were evaluated in the mRNA and protein levels. The experimental designed used allowed to observe the responses of these maize lines to A. flavus inoculation and to the stress caused by wounding …
Characterization Of Mutations In The Receptor Binding Site Of Influenza A Viruses Determining Virus Host, Tissue, And Cell Tropisms Using Systems Biology Approaches, Feng Wen
Theses and Dissertations
Influenza A viruses (IAVs) cause occasional pandemics and seasonal epidemics, thus presenting continuous challenges to public health. Vaccination is the primary strategy for the prevention and control of influenza outbreaks. The antigenicity matched high-yield seed strain is critical for the success of influenza vaccine. Currently, there are several limitations for the influenza vaccine manufacture: 1) the conventional methods for generating such strains are time consuming; 2) egg-based vaccines, the predominant production platform, have several disadvantages including the emergence of viral antigenic variants that can be induced during egg passage; 3) vaccine seed viruses often do not grow efficiently in mammalian …
Chloroplast Development And Cytokinin And Gibberellin Effects On Ivy Geranium Under Heat Stress, Callie J. Morris
Chloroplast Development And Cytokinin And Gibberellin Effects On Ivy Geranium Under Heat Stress, Callie J. Morris
Theses and Dissertations
Developing foliar growth of ivy geraniums (Pelargonium peltatum) bleaches white after exposure to temperatures greater than 30°C. This study investigated chloroplast development in ivy geraniums under heat stress comparing a heat sensitive cultivar, Temprano™ Lavender, and a heat tolerant cultivar, Contessa™ Red. Using transmission electron microscopy and spectrophotometry, foliar bleaching under heat stress was found to be due to an absence of developed chloroplasts within the bleached new growth accompanied by lower chlorophyll content. To determine whether heat stress related foliar bleaching could be prevented, cytokinin and gibberellins were applied in combination, at different rates before, during or after a …
Investigating The Postmortem Microbial Community Structure, Function, And Transmigration As It Pertains To Forensic Science And Public Health, Zachary Melburn Burcham
Investigating The Postmortem Microbial Community Structure, Function, And Transmigration As It Pertains To Forensic Science And Public Health, Zachary Melburn Burcham
Theses and Dissertations
Postmortem microbial communities are being extensively studied for their utility in forensic science investigations. Microbial communities associated with decomposition, necrobiome, have been shown to react in a predictable manner to the postmortem interval or time since death. These communities are affected by environmental factors such as temperature and humidity which can cause variabilities in the community structural and functional turnover. However, the transmigration patterns across organs and functional activity as decomposition progresses is still relatively unknown in a highly controlled system. This study aims to describe the community structural changes that take place during a highly controlled decomposition in mice …

Creating New Germplasm To Improve Aflatoxin Resistance In Maize, Oluwaseun Felix Ogunola
Theses and Dissertations
Maize (Zea mays L), the third largest crop produced in the world is susceptible to pre and post contamination of aflatoxin. Aflatoxin is a secondary carcinogenic metabolite produced by Aspergillus flavus, an opportunistic fungus of maize that causes ear-rot and subsequent production of aflatoxin. Host plant resistance is one of the promising long term solution to combat aflatoxin contamination in maize grains. Resistance to aflatoxin is heritable and resistant germplasms that can be used to reduce aflatoxin resistance has been developed. Creating quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping populations to identify regions within maize chromosomes contributing to aflatoxin resistance help identify …

Development And Validation Of Urine Hormones By Lc-Ms/Ms Using The Boreal Toad (Anaxyrus Boreas Boreas) As A Model Species, Ashley Nicole Meredith
Theses and Dissertations
Analysis of urinary hormone levels can be used to identify sex and breeding patterns in amphibians. This is especially important for ensuring the survival of endangered species. The most common way to determine hormone levels is enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA); however, there is the possibility of cross-reactivity with this technique, and only one hormone can be monitored per plate, limiting efficiency. In this study, the effectiveness of liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was evaluated in terms of sensitivity, repeatability, and through-put in monitoring hormone levels in Anaxyrus boreas boreas (boreal toads). Urine samples were collected from ten different …

A Functional Developmental Genomics Analysis Of Rin4 And Exocyst Genes As They Relate To Glycine Max Defense To The Plant Parasitic Nematode Heterodera Glycines Infection, Keshav Sharma
Theses and Dissertations
The initial interaction of vesicle and the target membrane prior to their fusion is called vesicle tethering, a process mediated by an octameric protein complex called the exocyst. The exocyst connects vesicles and binds them to phosphatidylinositol 4, 5-biphosphate (PI (4,5) P2), located on the plasma membrane. The exocyst complex is located at the target site, helping to prepare the soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive fusion protein attachment protein (SNAP) receptor (SNARE) for docking and subsequent release of vesicular contents after fusion. The importance of the exocyst in cellular processes is inevitable since it performs central roles in exocytosis thereby inducing SNARE-mediated membrane …
Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Simulations To Understand Speciation And Solvation Structure Of Common Herbicides, Zachary W. Windom
Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Simulations To Understand Speciation And Solvation Structure Of Common Herbicides, Zachary W. Windom
Theses and Dissertations
The application of commercial herbicide restricts weed growth and significantly improves control over crop vitality and yield. Despite their utility in the agriculture sector, herbicides have the potential to contaminate local water sources. To minimize environmental impacts, the development of efficient separation processes to clean-up contaminated water bodies is necessary. However, complex speciation and conformational flexibility in the condensed phase poses a significant challenge. In this work, we investigate structure and speciation of three common organic herbicides (glyphosate, atrazine, and metolachlor) in aqueous solution. We employ the PBE-D3 density functional to perform ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in the …
An "[Un]Readiness To Be Touched": The Critique Of Sentimentalism In Sensation Fiction, Rachel Vernell Wolfe
An "[Un]Readiness To Be Touched": The Critique Of Sentimentalism In Sensation Fiction, Rachel Vernell Wolfe
Theses and Dissertations
Early sensation novels such as Wilkie Collins’s The Woman in White, Mary Elizabeth Braddon’s Lady Audley’s Secret, and Ellen Wood’s East Lynne use the eighteenth-century notion of sentiment in very distinct manners. These novels demonstrate a perspective in transition regarding sentimentality in how they apply sentimental qualities to very specific character types. Some characters are extremely sentimental, whereas others appear completely void of emotion and are even described as automata. These sensation novels even feature sentimental journeys and objects, as well as allusions to sentimental novels such as Laurence Sterne’s A Sentimental Journey and Henry Mackenzie’s Man of Feeling. The …

Remnant populations of Betula papyrifera have persisted in the Great Plains after the Wisconsin Glaciation along the Niobrara River Valley, Nebraska. Population health has declined in recent years, and has been hypothesized to be due to climate change. We used dendrochronological techniques to assess the response of B. papyrifera to microclimate (1950-2014), and satellite imagery [Landsat 5 TM (1985-2011) and MODIS (2000-2014)] derived NDVI as a proxy for population health. Growing-season streamflow and precipitation were positively correlated with raw and standardized tree-ring widths and basal area increment increase. Increasing winter and spring temperatures were unfavorable for tree growth while increasing …

Lapses in the graft-vs.-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis and side effects of current standard care following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) call for novel regimens. Traditional approaches targeting T cells showed limited success in preventing acute GVHD (aGVHD). System medicine showed promising results treating complex diseases such as sepsis and multi-organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Adapting established network pharmacology analysis methods, we aimed to develop novel integrative regimens to prevent aGVHD. Our network pharmacology analysis predicted that Xuebijing injection (XBJ) targets a series of key node proteins in aGVHD network. It also unveiled that Salviae miltiorrhizae (Danshen), an herb in Xuebijing …
A Stochastic Cellular Automaton Simulation Of Chemical Oscillations In Small Systems, Yue Hu, Jenny Xie
A Stochastic Cellular Automaton Simulation Of Chemical Oscillations In Small Systems, Yue Hu, Jenny Xie
Faculty Research and Scholarship
We propose a stochastic cellular automaton method to simulate chemical reactions in small systems. Unlike the standard Gillespie method, which simulates chemical reactions with a few thousand molecules reacting with each other but without spatial considerations, our systems are divided into independent cells, each containing only a few molecules. Our simulation of the Brusselator produces chemical oscillations that agree extremely well with solutions to deterministic rate equations, and we can see strong oscillations in systems with as few as 10 cells. We are able to study several factors that affect the robustness of these small chemical oscillators: system size, spatial …
Unhappy Consciousness, One-Dimensionality, And The Possibility Of Social Transformation, Arnold L. Farr
Unhappy Consciousness, One-Dimensionality, And The Possibility Of Social Transformation, Arnold L. Farr
Philosophy Faculty Publications
The present article departs from concepts and ideas thoroughly developed by Herbert Marcuse. As such, it deals with his approach concerning the possibility of social transformation, looking to problematize the obstacles and hardships associated to the ongoing forms of social domination. To take this through, central works such as Eros and civilization and One-dimensional man are taken up, along with a number of lesser known texts and posthumously published reflections. Asserting the influence of Hegel, Marx and Freud, it is considered possible to criticize some of the existing contradictions that mark capitalist relations, interpreting them dialectically and immanently to unveil …

Carbene Triel Bonds Between Trr3 (Tr=B, Al) And N-Heterocyclic Carbenes, Zongqing Chi, Wenbo Dong, Qingzhong Li, Xin Yang, Steve Scheiner, Shufeng Liu
Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications
The carbene triel bond is predicted and characterized by theoretical calculations. The C lone pair of N‐heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) is allowed to interact with the central triel atom of TrR3 (Tr = B and Al; R = H, F, Cl, and Br). The ensuing bond is very strong, with an interaction energy of nearly 90 kcal/mol. Replacement of the C lone pair by that of either N or Si weakens the binding. The bond is strengthened by electron‐withdrawing substituents on the triel atom, and the reverse occurs with substitution on the NHC. However, these effects do not strictly follow …

“Only A Passing Idiocy”: The Ku Klux Klan In Maine State Politics, Erin Best
Honors Program Theses and Projects
During the late the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, French Canadians migrated to the United States to fill existing labor gaps in New England’s textile mills. By the 1920s, French Canadians and Franco-Americans dominated textile labor in Maine. Despite its general rural cultural landscape, the modernism of the 1920s did come to influence the lived-experience of Maine’s French-speaking population. Urban centers like Lewiston-Auburn, Portland, and Bangor were urban-industrial towns that tended to be oppositional to the state’s more rural and conservative demographic. This sparked a general counter-movement among Maine’s conservative Protestant population. Similar to other rural regions in the United …

After the pallid sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus albus) was listed as endangered in 1990, a variety of management actions focusing on early life history needs have been implemented to aid species recovery. Given the scarcity of age‐0 pallid sturgeon, managers and scientists have relied on sympatric congeners to evaluate the effectiveness of management actions in the short term; however, increased understanding of habitat requirements for age‐0 Scaphirhynchus sturgeon is still needed to appropriately focus management efforts. Recently, a lack of food‐producing and foraging habitats were proposed as potential limiting factors for pallid sturgeon, and the purpose of this study was to evaluate …
Public Perceptions Of Police Interactions With Juveniles, Jillian Orr
Public Perceptions Of Police Interactions With Juveniles, Jillian Orr
Honors Program Theses and Projects
While previous research shows how different people respond differently to situations regarding police use of force on juveniles (Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, etc) this paper delves into what aspect each person has that influences the way they feel the police officer should respond to a juvenile suspect. I surveyed a group of about 300 people and asked them to give their responses to a vignette in which they were the acting police officer. Then, I analyzed the public opinion results through the lens of authoritarianism and compared them to the variables of age, gender, employment, and education.
