The Impacts Of A Civic Engagement Cohort Program For Water Quality Professionals, Elizabeth Kallestad, Scott Chazdon, Hannah Bohn

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

In this article, researchers report the impact study results of University of Minnesota Extension's civic engagement for water quality cohort program. The cohort curriculum highlights Extension's research-informed, five-stage civic engagement model emphasizing process design and process management. Using a non-random comparison group design, a survey was conducted with participants of three civic engagement cohorts for water quality professionals, as well as a comparison group of water quality professionals not part of a cohort. Survey results were aggregated into the five stages of Extension's civic engagement process: prepare, inquire, analyze, synthesize, and act together. Findings indicated cohort participants experienced significantly better …

The Corn/Soybean Rotation And Profitability, Matthew Stockton, Devin Broadhead Sep 2018

The Corn/Soybean Rotation And Profitability, Matthew Stockton, Devin Broadhead

Cornhusker Economics

One of the most basic questions farmers must answer on an annual basis is what to plant. In some cases this is simply a choice among cultivars in others it is a choice among different crop types. In Nebraska the choice may vary considerably since many different crop types are grown. This discussion focuses on the factors that affect profitability, which are created by both biology and economics, and how that might be used to make the best crop rotation selection between corn and soybean cropping systems.

Student Training And Workforce Development At The Usgs Water Resources Research Institutes, Mary J. Donohue, Darren T. Lerner Sep 2018

Student Training And Workforce Development At The Usgs Water Resources Research Institutes, Mary J. Donohue, Darren T. Lerner

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Measures of student training and workforce development are key academic, social, and economic metrics. A principal component of the United States Geological Survey Water Resources Research Act Program is the training of water scientists and engineers through participation in research and other mentoring. This training occurs through Water Resources Research Institutes known as the National Institutes for Water Resources. Though the institutes have a demonstrated record in student training, there has been limited synthesis of data on students trained at state and national levels to clarify these contributions to workforce development. We investigated student support at the 54 institutes from …

Spatial And Temporal Fishing Patterns At The Outer Banks Of The Southern California Bight, Daniel J. Pondella Ii, Matthew J. Robart, Jeremy T. Claisse, Jonathan P. Williams, Chelsea M. Williams, Amanda J. Zellmer, Susan E. Piacenza Sep 2018

Spatial And Temporal Fishing Patterns At The Outer Banks Of The Southern California Bight, Daniel J. Pondella Ii, Matthew J. Robart, Jeremy T. Claisse, Jonathan P. Williams, Chelsea M. Williams, Amanda J. Zellmer, Susan E. Piacenza

Western North American Naturalist

We analyzed recreational and commercial catch records from 1980 to 2009 for the fishing blocks associated with the 5 southern offshore banks of the Southern California Bight (Cortes Bank, Tanner Bank, Northeast Bank, Cherry Ridge, and Garrett Ridge). Recreational fishers and divers targeted pelagic taxa (e.g., tunas and Yellowtail) but instead landed more benthic taxa (e.g., rockfishes, Ocean Whitefish, and California Sheephead). For the commercial fisheries, pelagics (Bluefin Tuna, Albacore, Skipjack, Yellowfin Tuna, Pacific Bonito, and Swordfish) were the most important taxa and represented a significant proportion (8%–27%) of the landings of these fishes in the bight. These fishes were …

Evolution In Chronic Cold: Varied Loss Of Cellular Response To Heat In Antarctic Notothenioid Fish, Kevin T. Bilyk, Luis Vargas-Chacoff, C. H.Christina Cheng

Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Background: Confined within the freezing Southern Ocean, the Antarctic notothenioids have evolved to become both cold adapted and cold specialized. A marked signature of cold specialization is an apparent loss of the cellular heat shock response (HSR). As the HSR has been examined in very few notothenioid species to-date, it remains unknown whether HSR loss pervades the Antarctic radiation, or whether the broader cellular responses to heat stress has sustained similar loss. Understanding the evolutionary status of these responses in this stenothermal taxon is crucial for evaluating its adaptive potential to ocean warming under climate change. Results: In this study, …

Introduction

Advances in liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) have enabled high-resolution metabolomics (HRM) to emerge as a sensitive tool for measuring environmental exposures and corresponding biological response. Using measurements collected as part of a large, panel-based study of car commuters, the current analysis examines in-vehicle air pollution concentrations, targeted inflammatory biomarker levels, and metabolomic profiles to trace potential metabolic perturbations associated with on-road traffic exposures.

Methods

A 60-person panel of adults participated in a crossover study, where each participant conducted a highway commute and randomized to either a side-street commute or clinic exposure session. In addition to in-vehicle exposure characterizations, participants …

Quality Of United States And Bangladesh Shrimp Due To Growth And Post-Harvest Practices, Murshida Khan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Shrimp is one of the most consumed and traded seafood, and due to its high demand, consumers depend on both wild caught and farmed products. Post-harvest practices can greatly affect health, safety, and quality, and the goal of this project was to study the effects of chemicals, bacteria, and antibiotics on shrimp from Louisiana and Bangladesh. Quality changes (proximate composition, color, texture and total plate count of bacteria) in shrimp from Louisiana (Farfantepenaeus aztecus and Litopenaeus setiferus) and Bangladesh (Penaeus monodon and Macrobrachium rosenbergii) were determined due to the application of melanosis preventing compounds (sulfite powder, …

Foreword, Kate Ryzoc

San Diego International Law Journal

The United States has experienced unprecedented change over the last several months: the election of a black President, extreme volatility in the stock market, and the price of a barrel of gas dropping almost $100 in five months. However, these events on U.S. soil remind us how globally connected the world is. The election of Barack Obama caused global celebration. The economic downturn in the U.S. induced Britain, France, and others to execute massive stimulus packages. And when the price of a barrel of gas hit highs and lows, international markets reacted.

These international impacts remind us that the world …

“We Always Hurt The Things We Love”—Unnoticed Abuse Of Companion Animals, Bernard E. Rollin

Animal Cruelty and Abuse Collection

Despite the fact that companion animals enjoy the status of “members of the family” in contemporary society, there are numerous diseases affecting the longevity of these animals and their quality of life. Some of the most pervasive and damaging problems accrue to pedigreed animals whose genetic lines contain many major and severe diseases which are detrimental to both the quality and length of life. If one considers the most popular dog breeds in the United States, the top 10 include the Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, French Bulldog, Beagle, Poodle, Rottweiler, Yorkshire Terrier, and German Shorthaired Pointer. Some idea …

Physics

Insects from the order Embioptera (webspinners) spin silk fibres which are less than 200 nm in diameter. In this work, we characterized and compared the diameters of single silk fibres from nine species—Antipaluria urichi, Pararhagadochir trinitatis, Saussurembia calypso, Diradius vandykei, Aposthonia ceylonica, Haploembia solieri, H. tarsalis, Oligotoma nigra and O. saundersii. Silk from seven of these species have not been previously quantified. Our studies cover five of the 10 named taxonomic families and represent about one third of the known taxonomic family-level diversity in the order Embioptera. Naturally spun silk varied …

Biology Faculty Publications

Stunning of edible crustaceans to reduce sensory perception prior and during slaughter is an important topic in animal welfare. The purpose of this project was to determine how neural circuits were affected during stunning by examining the physiological function of neural circuits. The central nervous system circuit to a cardiac or skeletal muscle response was examined. Three commercially important crustacean species were utilized for stunning by immersion in an ice slurry below 4 °C and by electrocution; both practices are used in the seafood industry. The blue crab (Callinectes sapidus), the red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii), …

The Role Of Proton Transport In Gating Current In A Voltage Gated Ion Channel, As Shown By Quantum Calculations, Alisher M. Kariev, Michael E. Green Sep 2018

The Role Of Proton Transport In Gating Current In A Voltage Gated Ion Channel, As Shown By Quantum Calculations, Alisher M. Kariev, Michael E. Green

Publications and Research

Over two-thirds of a century ago, Hodgkin and Huxley proposed the existence of voltage gated ion channels (VGIC) to carry Na+ and K+ ions across the cell membrane to create the nerve impulse, in response to depolarization of the membrane. The channels have multiple physiological roles, and play a central role in a wide variety of diseases when they malfunction. The first channel structure was found by MacKinnon and coworkers in 1998. Subsequently the structure of a number of VGIC was determined in the open (ion conducting) state. This type of channel consists of four voltage sensing domains …
